Yankees.com: Yanks’ bats quiet in Ponson’s fine effort
NEW YORK—Torii Hunter’s single up the middle brought home the go-ahead run as the Angels got to Mariano Rivera for a ninth-inning run on Friday, securing a 1-0 decision over the Yankees following two sterling starting pitching performances.
Taking the mound after Sidney Ponson hurled seven scoreless innings and Damaso Marte fired a blank eighth, Rivera issued a five-pitch walk to Mark Teixiera opening the ninth. Vladimir Guerrero poked a single to right field, moving the go-ahead run to third base, before Hunter drilled a hit into center field for the first run of the game.
After ripping off eight wins in a row, the Yankees have lost five of their last six. And you can probably add two more losses upcoming this weekend. All the moves Cashman made before the deadline were very positive, but it seems nothing can exorcise WOE. Or maybe this team just stinks.
