Livan Hernandez has a nice 6-2 record, but it’s a little misleading. He won his first three starts, throwing 21 innings with a 2.57 ERA and held opponents to a .263/.268/.325 line. In his last nine starts, he’s got a 5.37 ERA and opponents are hitting .353/.382/.552 against him. It would seem like this is a good chance for the Yankee offense to fatten up, but as we’ve seen this year that’s not happening as much as we’d like.
Pettitte’s season has been a slightly less extreme version of Hernandez’s. He put up a 2.45 ERA in his first four starts then scuffled over his next four, with and ERA of 6.75 and an opponent’s batting line of .322/.372/.529. He’s thrown quality starts in his last three games with an ERA of 3.38 so it looks like he’s rounding back into form.
Today’s game is a must-win. Well, not really, but it’d be nice to take three out of four on the road against a team that’s been playing decently and head home above .500 for Joba’s rotation debut on Tuesday.
