Newsday - Leyritz arrest continues tough Yankees offseason
One-time Yankees World Series hero Jim Leyritz’s arrest Friday morning on charges of driving under the influence manslaughter overshadowed what already had been a rough offseason for the Yankees, stung by the release of the Mitchell Report.
The car crash Leyritz was involved in killed Fredia Ann Veitch, 30, a married mother of two. Leyritz allegedly ran a red light and crashed into her car while he was driving under the influence of alcohol.
This is a terrible tragedy for the family of the woman whom Leyritz killed. As far as Leyritz goes, I have no sympathy for him. In my youth I did my share of drunk driving, and it’s not something I am proud of. The difference is that I was fortunate enough to never get in an accident and realized how stupid it was in my early 20s and stopped doing it. There’s zero excuse for a 44 year old man who’s made millions of dollars in his life to be this irresponsible and I hope he is punished accordingly.
