Way back in the 20th century, Bill James wrote the first essential book about baseball managers. Chris Jaffe has just written the second.
- Rob Neyer, ESPN.com

From now on, whenever I have a question about a manager, Jaffe's book will be the first and last one I reach for.

John Brattain Memorial Fund

The Hardball Times has set up a memorial fund for John Brattain's family. He left behind a wife and two teenage daughters.

Four years ago, I found from personal experience how generous the online community can be to its own in their hour of need. I am now literally begging you to be even more generous than you were to me.

*Actual lineup not yet posted, but this is my best guess

The Captain’s back.  Yay for the offense.  And he’s a three-time Gold Glover on top of it.

The good news is that Jorge Posada won’t be behind the plate.  The bad news is that Chad Moeller will have to bat in this game.

Robinson Cano sits for Alberto Gonzalez.  Looks like an offensive upgrade to me.

So far Hughes and Kennedy are reprising the Wade Taylor/Jeff Johnson glory years.  Can anyone around here pitch?

If Keith can’t liveblog I may be able to pick it up when I get home.  Go Yanks.

***Game Joined in Progress in the bottom of the sixth with two down and the Yankees up 7-2***
I guess I should skip the first six innings of more games.  Seems like Kennedy’s done well so far, and the punchless Yankees have scored seven runs, which usually takes them a whole series.  I like it.

Kennedy’s right at 90 pitches now so this is probably his last inning.  There are two down but runners on the corners with two outs.

Kennedy fans Haynes with pitch #92 on the night.  Six innings, two runs?  I’ll take it.

Top of the seventh
Alex Rodriguez leads off against Scott Dohman.  Rodriguez is 3-3 with a tater.  Couldn’t do that after a two hour rain delay though, could ya?  Rodriguez falls behind 1-2 then fouls off a breaking pitch.  He grounds a single between third and short to make it 4-4.  I’ll have his up to the minute OPS shortly.

With his 4-4, Rodriguez is now hitting .315 /.362 /.556.  Booooo.

Hideki Matsui lines one to Iwamure who short-hops it and turns a double play.  Not cool Hideki, not cool.

Morgan Ensberg rips the first pitch he sees straight up the middle for his second hit of the game.  I think Ensberg has a very good chance to be a contributor this year, especially since Jason Giambi will have to face non-Timlin pitchers at times.

Melky up with two outs and Ensberg on first.  He works the cdount to 2-2 then pops up to Carlos Pena in foul ground to end the inning.  Looks lke they may let IPK start the seventh.  Think of the labrums!

Bottom of the seventh
Of course since Kennedy started the seventh, Jason Bartlett lines one off what looked like his leg.  Bartlett reaches and Kennedy is pulled.  Not sure who’s coming in yet.

Looks like he actually got hit on the hip.  Hope that doesn’t affect his hula hooping, but he’s definitely not feeling real good.

Billy Traber is in with three lefties due up.  He starts with Iwamura.  He throws two strikes to start it off but the umpire pretended the second one was not a strike.  Breaking ball misses down and the count is 2-1.  Fastball misses away and the count goes to 3-1.  This is not LOOGY-ish Billy.  3-1 is fouled back and the count goes full.  Full count fastball is hit pretty well to RF, but it’s not close to the wall so Bobby Abreu is able to catch it.

One down and The Speedy Carl Crawford steps up.  Did you know Crawford possesses above average speed?  I don’t think the announcers have done a good job of conveying that. TSCC golfs one over Abreu and into the stands for a two-run jack and the Rays are back in the game at 7-4.  That was most definitely non-LOOGY-ish.

Carlos Pena up now.  Traber comes inside and hits him on the hand or bat.  The ump says hand and refuses to listen to Joe Girardi’s complaints and Pena reaches on the HBP.  So Traber faced three lefties and got one of them out.  I guess that does make him a LOOGY in the one out sense.  With the righty Upton due up, Traber’s out and Brian Bruney will be coming in.

Bruney throws a couple of heaters past Upton to get ahead 0-2.  Another fastball gets fouled down the left side and the count stays 0-2. Another 0-2 fastball and Upton smokes it to straightaway CF for a two-run HR and what was once a 7-2 laugher is now a 7-6 nailbiter.  Shit, maybe I shouldn’t have started liveblogging.

Evan Longoria follows up with his first major league homer and we’ve got a tie game at 7.  I am clearly bad luck tonight so I’m done.
