“Just Okay”
That’s the very first clue in the crossword in my Daily News today. “Just Okay.” 4 Spaces. What they’re going for, of course, is “SoSo.” What came to mind for me, however, was “.500”
That’s what the Yankees are this year. “Just okay.” And, to my rather considerably surprise, I’m “just okay” with that myself. The last time they had a playoffs and didn’t invite the Yankees I was 9. Now I’m 24. Much as I’d like to believe the Yankees would be playing October baseball every year until I died in bed with a young Hollywood starlet at the age of 85, it wasn’t happening.
It is a shame this team will waste a fantastic year by Rivera (his last two outings not withstanding), and the closing window on Damon, Jeter, A-Rod, etc. But unlike 2005, when their 11-19 start seemed to represent a major downturn by the franchise, I am unconcerned about their status. The Yankees will be back, maybe as soon as 2009.
For now, they’re just okay.
