Way back in the 20th century, Bill James wrote the first essential book about baseball managers. Chris Jaffe has just written the second.
- Rob Neyer, ESPN.com

From now on, whenever I have a question about a manager, Jaffe's book will be the first and last one I reach for.

John Brattain Memorial Fund

The Hardball Times has set up a memorial fund for John Brattain's family. He left behind a wife and two teenage daughters.

Four years ago, I found from personal experience how generous the online community can be to its own in their hour of need. I am now literally begging you to be even more generous than you were to me.

RA: Runs allowed per nine innings (earned and unearned)
FIP: Fielding independent pitching
RSAR: Runs saved above a replacement level reliever(not adjusted for leverage)

When I think top relievers, I usually think of Andrew Bailey first, so it's no suprise to see him topping this list. Whoever he is, he's having a very nice year. R.A. Dickey's reinvented himself as a knuckleballer and has been surprising effective, although his FIP thinks he's been pitching a little over his head. No surprise seeing Joe Nathan and Jon Papelbon near the top of the list, although Papelbon's walk rate has spiked this year and his FIP is much higher than his RA. Given his track record, I'd probably expect to see his peripherals improve moreso than to see his value degrade towards his FIP, but maybe we'll get lucky there.

Looking at the Yankees, Alfredo Aceves has actually been a touch more valuable than Mo if you ignore leverage due to more innings pitched. Given their respective FIPs, we shouldn't expect that to continue going forward. If Aceves remains in the rotation or gets a few spot starts, he'll likely also see a slight decrease in his overall effectiveness. Since beginning the year below his normal standards (3.97 ERA through May 7), Mo has been dominant (1.75 ERA since May 10).

Phil Hughes gets a bump here thanks to his time as a starter, but he's been outstanding in the pen and finally looks like the #1 prospect we heard so much about. Phil Coke's had a good year except for the HR ball, but gave up four runs in his last outing which knocked his value down by 3.5 runs. David Robertson's control is hurting his value, although he's still been useful. Brian Bruney and Brett Tomko haven't been very good, although there's possible upside with Bruney, who was dominant before going on the DL.

None of the other relievers are really worth talking about, except maybe Nick T. Swisher. I could watch clips of him fanning Gabe Kapler all day. I suppose I could mention the fact that Edwar Ramirez and Damaso Marte may end up contributing at some point this year, and that Mark Melancon has shown enough statistically and physically to expect that he should be better at some point in the not-so-distant future.

RA: Runs allowed per nine innings (earned and unearned)
FIP: Fielding independent pitching
RSAR: Runs saved above a replacement level starter
*Denotes All-Star

Although his ERA is starting to climb towards reasonable levels, Zach Greinke's still having a monster year. If you look at his FIP, his peripheral are better than his ERA shows, which bodes well for a strong second half. Edwin Jackson went from overrated in Tampa to perhaps underrated now. His peripherals this year are much improved, although his ERA looks like it may be a half run too high. Kevin Milwood has been putting up strings of good starts, but his FIP hasn't been very good and he's got an 8.83 ERA over his last three starts.

Looking at the Yankees, we see that C.C. Sabathia has been their most valuable starter despite being a slight disappointment. When Sabathia won the Cy Young in 2007, he walked 37 in 241 innings. This year's he's already walked 38 in 128.3 innings. We have a long track record of better from C.C., so we should expect better going forward. Of course, there are those he think he's an NL pitcher because of his time in Milwaukee, so I'll just remind them HE WON THE AL CY YOUNG IN 2007! A.J. Burnett's RA is right around his projections and he's been about as valuable as the numbers expected, which is a good thing. The bad thing is his underlying performance doesn't support either of those two items right now. So Burnett will likely have to actually start pitching better, or will lose some of his first half effectiveness. I'd bet on the former, but then again I liked the Burnett signing so I may be biased.

Despite their recent struggles, Andy Pettitte and Joba Chamberlain are still above replacement level once you adjust for park. There are still legitimate reasons to be concerned about them going forward though. Pettitte in particular concerns me. Given his age and the fact that he's gotten more and more hittable, I've felt his margin for error was pretty small. Still, he seems to have bad stretches every year so I wouldn't completely write him off yet.

I won't talk about Chien-Ming Wang. I'll just wish him a speedy recovery, especially given Joba's and Pettitte's issues.

I'm going to pull a Girardi and treat Phil Hughes as a reliever so I didn't include him here.

BRAR: Batting runs above replacement level (position and park-adjusted) using linear weights

* denotes All Star
** stats were compiled as of July 7

Poor Shin-Soo Choo is toiling in anonymity in Cleveland. I had no idea he was having such a strong season. Seems like he deserves to be an All Star, but nope, only Ichiro makes it from this list. That's not to say Ichiro doesn't deserve it, he's having a very good year on both sides of the ball and has been good since coming into MLB, even if slightly overrated.

Nick Swisher's overall numbers are decent, but it's worth nothing that he's hit .208/.333/.365 in 242 PAs since April. Still, at a cost of Wilson Betemit, it's tough to complain about Swisher's overall performance to this point. And for those pining for Alexis Rios, maybe you should pine for Clete Thomas instead.

Moving onto the DHs, some of the DHs have played enough in the field to have accumulated defensive stats, so I've included those. In just about every instance, they show why a player is primarily a DH.

Adam Lind had been a disappointment prior to this year, but he is finally showing the bat that made him a pretty highly touted prospect, and at age 25 there's a good chance it's not entirely a fluke.

Hideki Matsui's had wild performance swings, but overall he's been solid at DH, around 10 runs above replacement level. DH replacement level is set to a league average hitter, compared to replacement level at other positions being around 80% of positional average. This takes care of rewarding DHs for not playing defense at all.

I expected Pat Burrell to scuffle a little in the AL, but not nearly as much as he has. Unfortunately, it looks like David Ortiz is climbing back towards respectability, although he has a ways to go yet. And yeah, Dayton Moore hasn't really distinguished himself this season between signing The Farns, trading for Mike Jacobs, and now trading for Yuniesky Betancourt. At least he didn't trade for Jeff Francouer, right?

I'll look at starting pitches and relievers next, then hopefully on to projections for the second half over the end of this week or beginning of next week.

Carl Crawford is a good example of how just looking at OPS ignores large parts of a player’s value. Despite having an OPS lower than several players behind him, his defense and high number of steals at a good percentage have made him the most valuable LF in the AL to this point in the season. Johnny Damon’s second despite tailing off quite a bit lately (.235/.339/.416 since May 19).

Damon joins Juan Rivera and Denard Span as players who were seemingly denied a spot on the All Star team, which is fine. After all, squeezing in a sixth Red Sock is important.  I kid.  Bay’s probably not really a -12 defender, UZR says -9 and it supposedly adjusts for Fenway.  So that makes him a +18, which is still worse than Rivera and Damon, and ties him with Span.  Maybe I shouldn’t kid.  Maybe I should be outraged.

Left field is generally considered a strong offensive position, but looking at the AL LF this year I’m left fairly unimpressed. Almost as unimpressed as when I watch the Yankees play the Angels. Not quite, but almost.

I'd feel bad for Marco Scutaro not making the All Star team if he hadn't hit that cheap HR off Mo back in 2007. Since he did, I don't care. Bartlett's starting to cool off a little, but is still having an outstanding offensive season. Derek Jeter's offense is right there with Bartlett thanks to an edge in playing time and in SB. Zone rating isn't a fan of Jeter's defense, although UZR thinks he's been around average. Whichever you believe, he's clearly not the horrific defender some people make him out to be.

Were Brandon Inge not voted in by the fans, he'd have been the top 3B in the AL so far but not an All Star. Inge's always had a very good glove at third, but this year he's hitting better than he ever has. Scott Rolen's having a good year on both sides of the ball, but apparently no one really cares. Evan Longoria's a very good player, and a worthy All Star, even if these particular metrics show him as a few runs worse than Inge and Rolen.

Obviously we know that Alex Rodriguez hasn't played a full season. If we gave him 350 PAs he'd slot in between Rolen and Longoria. But we can't. So he doesn't.

Michael Young's been the most valuable offensive 3B in the AL, but zone rating isn't a fan of his glove, which takes a big chunk out of his overall value. I thought this may be a ZR specific issue, but UZR has Young at -11, so there's not much disagreement there. And look at Cody Ransom. He's not the least valuable 3B in the AL this year after all.

Oh, and this is pretty cool.

Now we finally see some people being robbed, as Ian Kinsler has an argument to being the second most valuable 2B in the league but wasn't selected to the All Star game (and just lost the final spot vote to Brandon Inge).Brian Roberts also appears to be about even with Aaron Hill, although it's close enough that I have no problem with Hill getting the nod given the margin of error in these numbers.

Our friend Robinson Cano has bounced back from last year's disaster, although his performance in more important spots to this point in time has been brutal. While Cano's triple slash numbers compare favorably with some of the people ahead of him on the list, park factors, DPs, and .500 CS rate knock him down. We're pretty close to the point where we have to accept that Cano is what he is. A guy who should hit .305/.335/.490 or so while playing occasionally good and occasionally bad defense at 2B. There are worse things to have on your team.

BTW, WTF happened to Howie Kendrick? I guess he'll get his numbers up against the Yanks coming up here.

Yankees.com: Jeter, Tex, Mo headed to All-Star Game

NEW YORK—Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter received the most votes in the American League and first baseman Mark Teixeira edged Red Sox counterpart Kevin Youkilis to represent the Junior Circuit at the 2009 All-Star Game in St. Louis.

Yankees closer Mariano Rivera, just the second player in Major League history to record 500 or more saves, was also tabbed in player balloting to serve in the AL’s bullpen for the July 14 contest in St. Louis.

Jeter and Rivera are Yankees All-Stars for the 10th times in their careers, with Jeter representing the AL for the fourth consecutive year and Rivera making it for the fifth time in the past six seasons. Teixeira is an All-Star for just the second time, having made his only prior appearance in 2004.

All three deserving.  I was surprised to see that Teix has only been an All Star once before.

Nice comeback win today after Joba Chamberlain’s worst start of the year.  All Star Jeter hit the go-ahead two-run HR in the fifth, turning an 8-7 deficit into a 9-8 lead, then Alfredo Aceves pitched four dominant innings to earn his first save of the year, while providing a much-needed rest to his teammates in the bullpen.

The Yankees are 15 games over .500 for the first time this year.

I have no idea what's up with Abreu's zone rating. He's been horrific statistically but he hasn't looked quite that bad to me. Right now, he's the worst RF in the league. For the bargain price of $16 million.

Although some of these people have worn gloves at points in the season, I'm ignoring their defensive contributions or lack thereof. I am probably far more amused than I should be about the fact that Frank Thomas was -4 for the Blue Jays and has been +6 for Oakland. Good job J.P.

*All Star selection
**RSAA adjusted for Green Monster

Johnny Popup was robbed, although it doesn't matter since he's injured. I can't believe f'in Dellucci beat Joba. He is having an awful season on both sides of the ball.

NY Times: Red Sox and Cubs Have 7 All-Stars Each

Jeter, Alex Rodriguez and Mariano Rivera will represent the Yankees, who are so friendly with the Red Sox that Francona will share the office of Yankees Manager Joe Girardi, who will be one of his coaches.

“Some of my better friends in life are in that clubhouse,” Rodriguez said, referring to the Red Sox. “For three or four days, we’re going to be good friends and teammates.”
...
Francona said he regretted not being able to take Mussina and Boston third baseman Mike Lowell. But he did not object to the mandate that every team be represented.

“I understand it, and I think it’s good for the game,” Francona said. “I guess I wish you could pick 37 or 38 guys. It’s like the N.C.A.A. tournament—they don’t come out and say it’s the best 64. It makes our decisions a little more complicated, but I don’t think it’s a bad rule.”

Mussina was asked to replace an injured player before the 2006 All-Star Game, but he declined the invitation because his son was having his tonsils removed. This time, he plans to attend the Lycoming County Fair in Hughesville, Pa., for the first time in years. Francona would probably be wise not to bother him.

“If he calls me and I’m at the tractor pull,” Mussina said, “I’ll probably stay at the tractor pull.”

The current voting is a joke, right? Bagwell isn’t seriously the leading NL 1B, is he? Giambi can’t be leading in the AL. I bet Sosa drops pretty fast now…

MLB All Star Game

Third Ballot:

1st Base C. DELGADO
2nd Base A. SORIANO
Shortstop A RODRIGUEZ
3rd Base B. MUELLER
Catcher J. POSADA
Outfield R. MONDESI
Outfield B. WILLIAMS
Outfield C. EVERETT
DH E. MARTINEZ

1st Base H. CHOI
2nd Base M. GILES
Shortstop E. RENTERIA
3rd Base S. ROLEN
Catcher M. PIAZZA
Outfield B. BONDS
Outfield J. CRUZ, JR.
Outfield G. SHEFFIELD

Nick Johnson’s injury pretty much eliminates any chance of his making the team this year. Also, I wrote Everett in as an OF again because even though he’s listed as a DH. Edgar’s more deserving, but Everett—who’s played the OF all season—is very much deserving of the spot. Even though he’s an ignorant asshole.
