Could tonight be the final game of the 2009 MLB season? As Yankee fans, let’s hope so.
After splitting the first two games at home, the Yankees re-captured home field advantage by taking two of three in Philadelphia. In isolation, taking two of three in Philly should be viewed as a positive thing, but because of the order in which it happened (winning the first two then dropping the last one despite threatening late), it feels like the Yankees blew an opportunity.
So the Yankees are home, which is an advantage. However, the concern that a lot of Yankee fans have is that they’ll be starting Andy Pettitte on three days rest. Given Pettitte’s age, his struggles in his last start, and the fact that he hasn’t pitched on short rest in three years, there are a lot of Yankee fans who are very concerned about how effective he might be.
I’m a little concerned, but given the circumstances of this game, I think the Yankees will ask Pettitte to go all out for as long as he can and not try to pitch deep into the game. If that means he only lasts three or four innings, so be it. If that’s the the case, then I think he can be pretty effective.
Even if Pettitte is good, it won’t be easy to win this game. The Yankees will be facing Pedro Martinez. In 2000, Martinez held opposing hitters to a line of .167/.213/.259 over 817 PAs. If we put that in the context of today’s game, that means over nine innings, the Yankees would get 34 PAs, 33 AB, 5 hits (3 of them 2Bs), and 2 BBs/HBPs. The linear weights value of that is 1.46 runs. The Phillies have played 176 games this season including the postseason, and have scored at least two runs in 89.6% of them. So right off the bat before a pitch has even been thrown, the Yankees are in severe trouble.
In Game 2, Martinez held them to one run over six innings. The Yankees were able to score two in the seventh, but I’d have to think that Charlie Manuel won’t be asking Pedro to pitch into the seventh this time around, so the Yankees may not get a crack at a tired Pedro.
The Yankee offense has also been a disappointment in this series. The fact that they are on the precipice of winning the World Series despite only getting positive offensive contributions from five of their hitters could be viewed as both discouraging and encouraging.
The discouraging thing is that while we should know that slumps are not predictive, we also know that it’s freaking frustrating to watch players like Mark Teixeira and Robinson Cano hit like Cody Ransom and Angel Berroa in the most important games of the season. Although our observations are certainly colored by the results, when players are in a slump it sure seems like they won’t come out of it soon enough to help, especially in a short postseason series.
The encouraging thing is that despite the struggles of their key players, the Yankees are leading the series 3-2, and shouldn’t need a ton of improvement from someone like Teixeira or Cano to take Game 6 or Game 7 (if necessary).
With only one or two games left, both teams should be using their best players for every inning and every PA. Hopefully those players decide the game without any poor umpiring or controversy.
From the minute the last out of the World Series is made, just about every team in baseball starts the motions to win the World Series. Every transaction, every decision, every dollar they spend, every hire they make is made with that goal in mind. For decent to good teams, it’s a goal to win the very next one. For rebuilding teams, it’s a goal for the future. That should tell you how important winning the World Series is. It’s the most important thing you can accomplish in baseball.
Given that, how can the possible clincher for the World Series NOT be the most important game of the season? Easy answer, it can’t.
This game is important.
This game is abundantly important.
This game is awfully important.
This game is conspicuously important.
This game is decidedly important.
This game is enormously important.
This game is exceedingly important.
This game is exceptionally important.
This game is extraordinarily important.
This game is highly important.
This game is immeasurably important.
This game is immensely important.
This game is incalculably important.
This game is incomparably important.
This game is incredibly important.
This game is ludicrously important.
This game is markedly important.
This game is notably important.
This game is particularly important.
This game is really important.
This game is ridicilously important.
This game is supremely important.
This game is strikingly important.
This game is vastly important.
This game is INFINITELY important.
YOU CAN"T GET ANY MORE IMPORTANT THAN INFINITELY IMPORTANT, CAN YOU??!1!!111??1?!!?
My heart wouldn’t be able to take a Game 7 either.
Whether the Yankees win or lose this game, it’s been a wild ride for us Yankee fans this year. Let’s hope it ends with a bang tonight.
Go Yankees.

In his career, Cliff Lee has thrown 466 pitches in the postseason and has allowed two earned runs. He’s averaging 116.5 pitches per game, which means he will allow at most 0.5 runs.
In A.J. Burnett’s second ALCS start against the Angels, he allowed four runs on his first 17 pitches. He’s averaging 101.5 pitches per start, which means he will allow at least 23.88 runs tonight. When that happens, he will break Brickyard Kennedy’s record for most runs allowed in a World Series game.
Whatever.

Phillies in four.
Two former Cleveland Cy Young winners face off as the World Series kicks off tonight in the Bronx.
For much of the season, I’ve harped on the importance of the games. In general, they were all important because of what they meant as far as the Yankees making the World Series. Well, guess what? They made it.
By my estimation, the Yankees played 110 important games this season, and they went 110-0 in those games. Importance is cumulative, so the first game was important, and the second game was twice as important, and so on and so forth. So tonight’s game is 1.29807E+33 times as important as the first important game.
That’s pretty freaking important. If I had to guess, it’s probably the most important game in the history of the Yankees.
It’s also important to win tonight’s game because the Yankees are throwing their best pitcher and have home field advantage. While losing it wouldn’t be crippling, it would shift favorite status to Philadelphia.
It won’t be easy, because they’ll be facing Cliff Lee tonight. Lee was just as valuable as CC this year during the regular season, and as amazing as CC has been in the postseason, Lee’s been even better.
Sabathia: 22.7 IP, 17 H, 1 HR, 3 BB, 20 K, 1.59 RA, 1.19 ERA, 2.54 FIP, opponents batting:.205/.241/.290
Lee: 24.3 IP, 14 H, 0 HR, 3 BB, 20 K, 1.48 RA, 0.74 ERA, 1.93 FIP, opponents batting:.165/.193/.207
Granted, Lee’s numbers came against what we should probably assume is worse competition and some pitchers, but the run environment in the NL playoffs has been a good amount higher than the AL’s, which probably mitigates that somewhat.
Add in the fact that the Phillies have a bunch of lefty power hitters taking aim at a disgracefully short porch in RF, and the Yankees probably have a tough hill to climb.
Maybe they’ll get lucky and the wind will be blowing in and Girardi makes good use of bunting and pinch-running and the Yankees can squeeze out a 1-0 win.
Maybe.
Go Yankees.

The Yankees will go for the series win tonight in Anaheim with a 3-1 lead.
In 2008, the Tampa Bay Rays built up a 3-1 ALCS lead. They lost games 5 and 6 and couldn’t close the deal until Game 7.
In 2007, the Cleveland Indians also had a 3-1 ALCS lead. They proceeded to lose Games 5, 6 and 7 and the ALCS.
I don’t have time to go back past 2007, but this basically shows having a 3-1 lead in the best of 7 ALCS is essentially worthless. If it happened once, it could be a fluke, but it happened twice, which is more than enough proof that it’s not fluke. The biggest guarantee in sports right now is that an ALCS team with a 3-1 series lead WILL LOSE GAME 5.
A.J. Burnett’s been very effective so far in his first career taste of the postseason after a somewhat erratic regular season. Although he’s been pretty good in terms of runs allowed, he’s walked seven and hit four batters in 12.1 IP. Luckily for him, he has not allowed a HR yet and has held opposing hitters to just six hits. Whether that’s skill or luck, it’s good.
The problem is, he’ll be opposing John Lackey instead of Joe Saunders tonght. Lackey’s a better pitcher than Burnett. In terms of their projections, Burnett projects to typically allow about 2.95 runs over six innings. Lackey would project allow 2.82.
In order to win a baseball game, you have to score more runs than you allow.
2.95 > 2.82.
So the Yankees are starting tonight down by 0.13 runs already. Couple that with home field disadvantage, and the Yankees’ win probability is somewhere around 48.8%.
Could the Yankees pull of the unthinkable and win tonight? Sure, as long as they are aware that this is the most important game of the season and they treat it accordingly.
What would it take to win?
We know that the Yanks are in cahoots with MLB and the umpire’s union to make sure that they get every break imaginable, which is sure to help keep the game at least somewhat close. Hopefully the Bankees (see what I did here? I changed the Y to a B to signify the fact that the Yankees are the highest revenue team in MLB and that gives them an advantage over everyone else, but I did it in a clever way that plays on their actual name) have wired sufficient funds to the umpires’ bank accounts prior to tonight’s game.
Hopefully Mariano Rivera is teaching the entire pitching staff the art of the spitball. Even though the guy has pitched for 15 seasons in the biggest market in baseball in some of the highest profile games in the baseball postseason under the intense scrutiny of almost everyone involved in baseball and never been accused or suspected of any type of chicanery, it took the heroic efforts of an Angels’ fanboy blog to finally pinpoint the only reason for his success. He’s been spitting on the ball for all these years. Since the umps are on the take, expect Burnett and whomever else pitches in this game to follow suit.
Maybe Jose Molina goes yard tonight.
Maybe Jeff Mathis doesn’t hit a ringing gapper for an RBI double.
Go Yankees.

Yankee Win Probability: -100.0%
After a tough loss yesterday, the Yankees look to rebound in Game 4. The good news is that they’ll be sending out their ace, CC Sabathia, to try and do it.
Sabathia will be pitching on three days of rest, something he’s done four times in his career. He’s managed to be effective doing it, but four games is a very small sample size so it doesn’t necessarily mean we should expect him to be as good as he’s been in the past.
According to chapter 7 of The Book, pitchers who started on three days rest allowed a wOBA of .369 on average. The same group of pitchers allowed a wOBA of .352 on four days rest.
So pitchers on three days rest are roughly five percent worse than they would be on four days rest.
Sabathia’s going-forward projection has him allowing about 0.104 runs per batter faced. He averaged 28 batters faced per game this season, but I’ll knock that down to 24 to account for the fact that they probably won’t extend him as long since he’s on short rest. Plus you need to make sure you use EVERY SINGLE RELIEVER IN YOUR BULLPEN IN EVERY GAME.
But I digress.
Anyway, the difference between normal Sabathia and short rest Sabathia would be something like 24 times 0.104 (2.4946) vs. 24 times 0.109 (2.6193). Or .125 runs. That lowers their win probability from 53.0% to 51.4%.
The Yankees blew a chance to take a commanding 3-0 lead in the ALCS with yesterday’s loss. A loss tonight would knot the series at 2-2, and give the Angels serious momentum. We all know that momentum is far more important than the talent of the two teams when figuring out who will win the series. We know this because of the fine analysis at Go Halos.com.
If the Yankees lose tonight, they have no possible chance to win this series. At all. They may as well not even play the rest of the series. That makes tonight an absolute must-win game, and the most important game in the history of the Yankees. Since the Yankees are the most important team in baseball, this is the most important game ever in the history of baseball.
It won’t be easy, because they’ll be facing Scott Kazmir, who has held the current Yankees to a collective line of .222/.307/.323. This is far more telling than any of the other things Kazmir or the Yankees have done against everyone else.
Only Mark Teixeira, Jorge Posada and Melky Cabrera have hit better than .182 against Kazmir among the Yankees who’d faced him at least ten times. Teixira has traded in his bat for Cody Ransom’s, so forget about him. Posada may be able to get on base, but if he does he’ll either run the bases horribly enough that he won’t score, or he’ll be pinch-run for in a move that will have a domino effect that will eventually culminate in Francisco Cervelli replacing Alex Rodriguez in the lineup and with no DH. As far as Melky, he’s hitting .200/.259/.200 this postseason, so you’ll forgive me for being skeptical about him doing anything useful.
So yeah, this game is going to suck. Maybe the Yankees will get lucky and the home plate umpire will have an awful strike zone that causes Joe Girardi to go off on him and get ejected. Then he can’t SCREW UP THE GAME BY CHANGING RELIEVERS UNTIL HE FINDS ONE WHO DOESN"T HAVE IT.
But I digress, again.
Maybe the Angels will make four or five errors that allow the Yankees to score a few runs, because the Yankee offense sure can’t do it on their own. Then maybe the Angels won’t pinch-hit with Jeff Mathis, who is apparently the best hitting catcher in MLB, and they’ll fall a run short of however many runs their defense give the Yankees.
Maybe.
Possibly.
Go Yankees.

While having a 2-0 lead in the ALCS is nice, it’s worth noting that since the advent of the 7 game LCS series, no team has ever won the ALCS or NLCS by winning fewer than four games. You HAVE to win a fourth game to advance to the World Series. Advancing to the World Series is the most important thing that any baseball team can do, and it’s the goal for every decent team from the minute the offseason starts.
You can’t win a fourth game if you don’t win a third game. Since winning a fourth game is important, as I’ve already covered, then winning a third game is arguably even more important. If the Yankees can somehow win today, they will win their third game of the series, and it will be an important one.
It won’t be easy, because the Angels probably have the edge in the pitching matchup. Not only that, but they are home so they get home field advantage. This is reflected in the Yankee win probability posted above.
So far in 2009, the Angels are undefeated in home playoff games. No team has been able to go into Anaheim and win since the postseason started. The Angels have held opposing teams to one run at home this postseason, while scoring nine. That means they have a Pythagenpat winning percentage of .988 at home in the postseason this year.
It doesn’t get much harder than trying to over come a 98.8% chance of losing.
Maybe the Yankees can pull off the unthinkable and pop a few lucky fly balls out of the park and hold the Angels to 4 runs and escape with a 5-4 win.
Go Yankees.

Yes, Jose Molina gets another start, and again, it’s not nearly as big of a deal as some are going to make it out to be.
The business side of baseball cannot be ignored. There is a chance that tonight’s game will be the last one played in Yankee Stadium this year, if the Yankees lose tonight then get swept in Anaheim. A win tonight guarantees at least one more home game, and all the potential revenue that entails.
Increased revenue = good for business. The Yankees can use that extra money to tack on an extra year to Damaso Marte’s contract, or to lock up Molina as the backup from 2010-2015. They may even have money left over to draft and sign more Tommy John surgery candidates.
Anything that’s good for business is important. If the Yankees stop making money, they become the Kansas City Royals. That could mean the return of Kyle Farnsworth in the eighth. We don’t want that, do we? Therefore, I shouldn’t have to tell you how important tonight’s game is. Its importance is self-evident.
It won’t be easy, because Joe Saunders has held the opposing team scoreless 12 times in his career. It’s pretty hard to win if you don’t score. It’s also worth noting that Mike Napoli has hit .364/.417/.909 against Burnett in his career. That it’s only been 12 PAs is irrelevant. This tells us far more than either player’s career numbers or projections. Figure Napoli gets five PAs today, which means he will single-handedly provide at least two runs.
Maybe the Yankees will get lucky, and the umps will hand them a 3-2 win.
Go Yankees.

6:12 pm: I haven’t done this in some time, but we’re gonna try a liveblog of tonight’s game (should there be a game). Got a cheap TV card in my computer, so maybe I can get some pics up during the game, but no promises on that one.
If you’re looking for multiple places to chat about the game, the BTF Game Chatters have been pretty active for the Yankees games, and the real-time IRC chats at #baseball_primer are fun, too.
Still no decision on whether there will be baseball, radar looks bad, but maybe it’ll be something they can play through.
6:46 pm: I don’t see it being that big a deal to start Molina over Posada in AJ’s starts. Yes, you obviously want the better bat in the game, but Posada goes in as soon as Burnett comes out. That probably means 2 ABs for Molina, and if he gets 3, that probably means that the Yanks have put up some runs. If there is any possibility that Burnett really is better with Molina than Posada, then the Yankees would be coming out ahead on that trade.
If Burnett gets knocked around today, then you’ve got to go Posada in Game Five. But until then, I can live with 2 ABs from Jose Molina.
7:32 pm: Sad to see the blimp shot of Yankee Stadium all lit up… with a big black emptiness next to it on the screen…
7:34 pm: FOX won’t tell you, but they’re the reason that this game might be suspended.
FOX wants a primetime game, of course, but a Saturday game should be played at 4:00. If it had been… there would be no problems with the rain. It would have been a bit warmer, too.
7:50 pm: Looks like we’ll have baseball tonight.
7:58 pm: We’re underway!
7:59 pm: AJ starts us off with a strikeout. Keeping Figgins off the basepaths is going to be huge if the Yankees are going to win—he’s always been a pain in their ass.
8:04 pm: With two outs he gets ahead on Hunter and then gives up a bloop double down the right field line. AJ is looking good, but with Vlad up, here’s a big moment early.
8:05 pm: No problems, easy bouncer to Derek for the third out. AJ throwing some heat in that first inning, PitchFX had several pitches at 96.
8:09 pm: Uh-oh, Jeter hacking away early might mean the Yanks expect to pound Saunders.
Or maybe he just liked that first pitch…
8:10 pm: Damon hit one that looks like it would have been gone two months ago, but that died well in front of the wall.
8:12 pm: Not the best start for the lineup, but Damon and Tex managed to work the count a bit. Not necessarily the most important thing when rain is not unlikely to suspend the game early, but it’s something.
8:15 pm: All you need is love. And a BlackBerry.
8:17 pm: Well, it’s only 1.1 innings so far, but AJ looks nasty. Score one for playing Molina?
8:18 pm: So apparently a baseball slows down while passing through the air. Amazing.
But what if they played in a vacuum?
8:20 pm: A nice stab by Burnett to stop Izturis’s hard grounder, and he’s through two looking great.
8:24 pm: A-Rod with a soft liner to short. UNCLUTCH.
8:27 pm: Nick Swisher walks to break up the perfect game for Saunders. I was starting to sweat there.
8:30 pm: Robby rips an RBI triple to the gap, 1-0 Yanks!
8:32 pm: It needs to be said every time: Robby looks like he’s heading out to knock over a liquor store after the game.
8:33 pm: Melky strikes out and the Yankees fail to clear the pitcher.
8:39 pm: Great stretch by Tex, again. Years of Giambi made us forget what great defense at first looks like.
8:42 pm: Figgins works a 1-2 count into a walk. Let’s see how fast he ends up on third.
8:43 pm: Two outs, AJ. Focus on Abreu.
8:46 pm: After falling behind 2-0 on Bobby, AJ throws 2 straight strikes and gets an easy flyball to Melky. Looking great so far.
If Molina get a double or something here, then there really wasn’t anything lost by starting him.
8:50 pm: Okay, so much for that. Molina strikes out and looks awful doing it.
8:51 pm: Wow, I actually thought there was a possibility we’d see no homers as NYS this series. Jeter takes Saunders out the other way and it’s 2-0 Yanks.
8:53 pm: Show the game and stop slobbering over Jeter, FOX.
8:55 pm: Broken bat grounder to second, Tex beats out the relay so A-Rod is up with two outs and one on.
8:57 pm: A-Rod hits it pretty hard, but right at Abreu.
He’s very clearly over his postseason mental block, he looks good at the plate and is hitting the ball hard and to the outfield.
8:59 pm: That guy’s wife in the John Hancock text message commercial is the fastest text message typer ever. And yet she still shortens “are” and “be”.
9:01 pm: 2009 ALCS MVP? Mark Teixeira’s right foot.
9:03 pm: Vlad strikes out on a ball in the dirt, ball bounces off of Molina and then off of Vlad, Molina barely gets Vlad at first. Maybe.
Still counts.
9:07 pm: Painful inning for Molina. Ball off his knee and head on the same foul ball, then a foul off his thumb.
Still, AJ continues to look amazing. I guess Molina will either be catching Game Five… or Game Two?
9:12 pm: Was Vlad safe? Looks like a tie to me, and since you have to be on the bag with the runner not yet on it, looks like Vlad was safe:

9:14 pm: A relatively quiet inning for the Yanks, back to the AJ show…
9:18 pm: Not a good start to the fifth, Izturis rips an automatic double to right. The Angels are great at turning these opportunities into runs.
9:19 pm: A shallow flyball to center keeps Izturis at second. It’ll take a hit or some kind of Yankees miscue now.
9:21 pm: Aybar does just that, hard single up the middle and it’s 2-1.
It’s been a great 4 innings from AJ, but he’s got to keep it together here.
9:23 pm: Aybar steals second and now a single makes it a new game. Another big moment here.
9:25 pm: A HBP with two strikes and AJ is in trouble.
9:26 pm: This is where Molina really needs to earn his start, keep AJ from falling apart.
9:32 pm: Bobby Abreu swings at ball 4 on 3-1, and then hits one to the wall in foul territory for the second out. Almost 4-2 Angels.
9:33 pm: AJ has really lost command this inning.
9:36 pm: AJ throws a wild pitch on 3-2 to load the bases, but it goes in the stands to keep Aybar from scoring.
Now it’s the man who isn’t throwing strikes vs. the guy who swings at balls. This is the turning point of this game.
9:39 pm: A 2-strike wild pitch ties the game.
You didn’t think it would be that easy, did you?
9:40 pm: A grounder to Jeter ends it… it could have been a lot worse.
AJ probably has only one inning left in him, do they pinch-hit Posada for Molina this inning?
9:43 pm: They’ve got to get to Saunders soon.
9:44 pm: Melky starts it off with a single up the middle. If you’re keeping Molina in here, he’s got to bunt. But they should send up Jorge.
They don’t. BIG moment.
9:45 pm: Missed bunt and foul bunt for Molina. Not looking like a smart move by Joe. Especially if AJ gets knocked out of the box next inning.
9:48 pm: Jose makes fools of us all with a 3-2 single. Great AB by Jose after the bunt attempts.
9:49 pm: Derek: DO NOT BUNT.
9:50 pm: Maybe he should have bunted…
9:51 pm: Wow, Jeter was safe. Well, can’t catch all the breaks.
9:52 pm: Damon strikes out and the Yankees blow the opportunity.
Now comes the biggest half-inning of the game. Which AJ will we see?
9:55 pm: Screen shot of Jeter getting thrown out on the DP:

9:57 pm: Morales struck out looking on a nice backdoor breaking ball (probably a little outside). Good start for AJ. Two more and you’ve done your job.
9:59 pm: Flyout to Swish for #2. One more to go.
10:01 pm: AJ fights back from 3-1 to get a flyout to Melky.
If that’s it… it was a nice start. That fifth inning sucked, but he looked amazing for the first four innings.
It’s all on the lineup now. You can’t let Joe Saunders off the hook like they have, even though it’s cold.
10:05 pm: Will another AJ start end with another pie?
10:06 pm: Tex grounds out but dislodges the ball with his butt and is safe at first. A-Rod thinking, “why didn’t I think of using my butt?”
10:06 pm: A-Rod pops out to right. A week and a half ago the boobirds would be raining down…
10:07 pm: Matsui grounds into a double play, and they’ve totally let Saunders off the hook tonight. Horrible.
10:11 pm: Another inning for AJ. He’s been good 5 of 6… can he finish strong? Yanks need it.
10:14 pm: AJ gets Aybar to ground to second on a 3-2, but Cano boots it. They’re going to pay for that.
10:15 pm: Phil Coke coming in for Figgins and, presumably, Abreu. It’s nailbiting time.
10:19 pm: Coke spending a little too much time with Aybar, falls behind 2-0 to Figgins.
10:21 pm: And he walks Figgins! Brutal failure for Coke.
10:22 pm: I think we’ve all seen this film before…
10:25 pm: Big strikeout of Abreu for the second out, now it’ll be Joba vs. Hunter. I’m willing to hear another year of “JOBA TO THE PEN!” for a strikeout here…
10:31 pm: Joba gets Hunter to hit a slow chopper to Jeter, but too slow. Bases loaded.
10:32 pm: Joba vs. Vlad? This ends really well or really badly.
Well, with the bases loaded and two outs, I guess it has to…
10:35 pm: Vlad swings at ball one—at least twice—and the inning is over.
10:40 pm: Swisher rips a leadoff single, and Brett Gardner comes in to pinch-run. Another huge spot in a game full of them so far.
10:41 pm: Saunders stays in to face Cano, and Robby swings at ball one.
10:44 pm: Cano screws it up and hits into a double play.
WE’VE SEEN THIS FILM BEFORE.
10:46 pm: The Yankees do not deserve to win this game.
10:48 pm: Someone should sit down with Brett Gardner and explain to him the point of putting in a pinch-runner…
10:50 pm: Despite the ALDS struggles, it is calming to see Hughes in here. Let’s see if he’s straightened it out.
10:51 pm: A fly out to Gardner, then a base hit to center. Willits on to run for Rivera.
I bet he runs.
10:54 pm: Derek Jeter not very clutch tonight. Is this the trade we made for A-Rod’s ALDS? Jeter blows an easy DP.
10:57 pm: Gary Matthews, Jr. pinch hits for some reason and strikes out.
And now Rivera comes in… what?!?!
10:59 pm: I just don’t get this move. It’s not that I oppose using Rivera in a tied game, but the fact is that Hughes wasn’t pitching badly, just make Matthews look bad, and this game might go for a while. I don’t agree with this move at all. I hope it works out okay.
11:00 pm: FYI, that doesn’t count as it working out. Working out means that they don’t lose until extra innings, and Marte or Gaudin don’t show up until the 15th.
11:04 pm: Here comes Jorge. Can he give the Yankees the lead?
11:04 pm: Nope, he grounds out. Well, Molina could have done that. Molina got a hit! You suck, Jorge!
11:06 pm: Homer aside, Derek Jeter has been as unclutch in this game as any postseason game A-Rod ever got ripped for.
11:08 pm: Another inning, another pathetic offensive effort. They look a lot like the Angels did last night.
11:09 pm: The difference being that they’re not facing CC Sabathia…
11:11 pm: Damon with a great sliding catch to put out Figgins. I could see shades of Dave Roberts this inning on that play.
11:13 pm: Abreu strikes out looking on a pitch I think was a ball all night. But hey, it’s Mo. He gets calls.
11:15 pm: A strikeout looking by Hunter, and that may have been inside. But Mo gets calls. He’s earned them.
11:19 pm: Looked at the video, those were strikes. Great job by Rivera.
If the Yanks win tonight, it’s a pie night.
11:20 pm: A-Rod up with a chance to win it. Can he come through again?
11:22 pm: Nope.
11:24 pm: Matsui with a broken-bat single with two outs, and he’s out of the game. So that’s the last pitch A-Rod will see tonight.
11:27 pm: Brett Gardner bounces a single to left through the hole vacated by Aybar, and Guzman goes to third. Cano up with two outs and the winning run on third.
Robby has struggled with runners in scoring position all year. But this is the only time that matters.
11:29 pm: And he grounds out weakly.
11:33 pm: A leadoff single for Vlad.
11:34 pm: Joe Buck has been hanging out with Chip Carey. FISTED TO CANO!
11:35 pm: A-Rod tries to kill Rivera on a bunt popout. Not clutch, Alex.
11:35 pm: Stop the presses, Joe Buck said something clever!
“Always catch a popup with four hands”
11:37 pm: Y’all still alive there? Cano makes a running catch which live looked like a base hit until he appeared on the screen.
11:39 pm: 25 pitches for Mo. He can probably come out for the 11th with tomorrow off.
11:41 pm: On a night where the ball isn’t carrying, everyone’s gonna try to homer from here on out.
11:43 pm: Bloop hit to center for Melky, and the Yankees have a shot again.
11:45 pm: Jorge hits into a DP… BUT THEY CALL MELKY SAFE ON THE NEIGHBORHOOD PLAY!
That was too obvious to let it go, I think.
11:49 pm: Yanks are going to waste that, Damon pops out to Figgins in foul territory.
11:51 pm: Tex grounds out to short, and it means nothing.
Still, the Angels don’t really have a moral leg to stand on here. Umpires do screw up that call—intentionally—all the time, but the rule is still the rule. You have to touch the bag.
11:54 pm: Now it’s on Aceves.
11:57 pm: You can’t walk Matthews! You can’t do it!
Yanks lose in this inning.
12:01 am: Told ya.
12:02 am: You. Can’t. Walk. Matthews.
Jesus.
12:04 am: So A-Rod, Guzman and Gardner to tie it. Whee.
12:07 am: Yes, I accept the blame for this one.
12:11 am: HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
12:18 am: So the Yanks can’t win it there, but A-Rod really put the nail in the coffin of the unclutch stuff.
12:21 am: So in comes Marte to face Morales with one out. Will Damaso make A-Rod’s home run all for naught? Will he put Robertson in a pickle again?
12:25 am: Or get Morales to ground to third?
12:26 am: Now it’s Robertson to try and keep it tied for an inning or two.
Girardi knows he’s almost out of pitchers, right?
12:29 am: And Robertson gives up a two strike double to Jeff Mathis. Not promising.
12:30 am: Walking Izturis is a good way to ensure that a solo homer doesn’t tie it in the bottom of the inning.
12:33 am: Hey, Alfredo—that’s what you’re supposed to do with Matthews.
If you had done that, Alex would have a pie in his face now.
12:36 am: Ervin Santana in now… flashbacks to Game Five of the 2005 ALDS… not pleasant.
12:40 am: A bloop single to right for Jorge with one out, and the Yanks have the winning run on.
12:42 am: Jeter hits into another GDP, but Aybar drops it and they only get a forceout.
Great clutchness tonight, Derek. Very clutch.
12:44 am: Base hit to right, and if Tex can manage a single the Yanks head to LA up 2-0.
12:46 am: Bases loaded, two outs, tied game… Alex Rodriguez at the plate.
Please. Please.
12:47 am: CHOKER! GET BACK SORIANO!!!
12:48 am: Robertson needs to keep the Angels scoreless here. Guzman-Gardner-Cano isn’t likely to score a run.
12:50 am: Well, we know who the goat is tonight.
12:59 am: Robertson gets Hunter, now the Angels have 2nd and 3rd with two out and Vlad up.
1:01 am: Robertson gets out of it… and we go on and on. Will Robertson come out for the 14th? Because this game ain’t ending here.
1:05 am: Hairston pinch-hits and the Yanks have another opportunity they can waste.
1:06 am: Santana almost sends Hairston to third walking Cano.
Melky and Jorge (barring ANOTHER GDP) to try and win it.
1:08 am: PIE PIE PIE PIE PIE PIE!
2-0 YANKS!

Most objective evidence shows that the American League is stronger than the National League. Unfortunately, in 2008, the American League champion Tampa Bay Rays disgraced the AL by losing to the National League Phillies in the World Series. Being embarrassed by the National League is not acceptable. Avenging that embarrassment is important. As probably the best the team in the AL this year, the Yankees are the best candidates to avenge that embarrassment. In order to do so, they have to get past the Angels in the ALCS first.
The Yankees have their best starter on the mound and are at home. This is a game they should win. If they win, their chances of advancing to the World Series improve. Advancing to the World Series is important, especially since the reputation of their league is at stake. That makes tonight’s game really, really super important. In a season loaded with important games, this is the most important yet.
I’ve yet to see anywhere that has the Angels favored in this series besides Angels’ fanboy blogs. However, if the Angels are able to win this game on the road against the Yankees’ ace, their chances of winning the series will surely increase by a good amount. John Lackey is certainly capable of pitching as well or better than Sabathia, so it won’t be easy.
Go Yankees.

With what seems like a commanding 2-0 lead in the ALDS, the Yankees have a chance to advance to the ALCS with a victory today. They’ll be sending Andy Pettitte out to try and wrap up the series against former Yankee Carl Pavano.
By the time the 2009 All Star Break arrived, Pettitte had started 18 games and hadn’t really pitched all that well. He had an ERA of 4.85 (FIP of 4.99). Opponents hit .283/.352/.443 against him during the first half. He walked around 3.6 people per nine innings while striking out around 5.8.
Since the break, he’s been a completely different pitcher. He’s got an ERA of 3.31 (FIP of 3.29), and opponents hit .226/.296/.326 against him. His BB/9 dropped to 3.3 while his K rate spike to 8.1 per 9. Overall, it was a fine season for Pettitte after a somewhat disappointing 2008.
Pavano’s tenure in pinstripes was an unmitigated disaster, as injuries held him to 26 starts over four seasons, compared to 33 starts this season alone. All for the bargain price of $40 million.
I’m not sure why, but I really don’t hate Pavano like a lot of Yankee fans do. Maybe it’s because I am skeptical that he was faking being hurt. If he was, the Yankees would surely have filed a grievance, wouldn’t they? It was pretty clearly a bad signing at the time it was made, but is that something to blame Pavano for, or is that something to blame the Yankee front office for? Regardless, that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t enjoy seeing the Yankees knock him out of the game in the first inning by putting up a ten spot.
Anyway, despite putting up a barely better than replacement-level 5.10 ERA this season between Minnesota and Cleveland, Pavano’s actually pitched ok. He had a FIP of 4.01, but was hurt by playing in front of two of the worst team defenses in MLB this year if you go by UZR, with the Twins at -36 and the Indians at -34. Because of that, Pavano allowed a BABIP of .335 this season, compared to .312 in his career. Pavano’s velocity is essentially what it has been throughout his career according to the data at Fangraphs, but one thing he’s doing differently this year is throwing his changeup more frequently (23.1% of the time compared to 15.6% career). The only AL pitcher who had a better BB/9 rate this year amongst ERA qualifiers was Roy Halladay.
All that being said, he’s probably not as good as his FIP says he is, although his HR/FB rate isn’t fluky either so he hasn’t been particularly lucky in that regard. CAIRO thinks he’s closer to that 5.10 ERA than his 4.00 FIP. But he has pitched well against the Yankees in two starts this year, with a 2.70 ERA in 13.1 IP, with 1 BB and 8 Ks. Of course that doesn’t really tell us anything more about him than his overall line does due to the small sample size.
The Yankees paid Pavano $40 million and got something like 0.4 wins above replacement out of it. That works out to around $100M per marginal win. Considering the going rate is generally $4-5M, it’s safe to say that the Pavano deal wasn’t so good. So the Yankees probably lost something like $38M over the life of Pavano’s deal.
That is clearly not good for the business side of things. If the Yankees can win today, they advance to the ALCS. That means at least two more home games. The average ticket price for a Yankee ALDS game this year is around $170 according to Stubhub. NYS holds about 52,325 if we included standing room. If we bump up the average ticket price to $200 for the ALCS and assume they sell $20 of concessions/merchandise per person, that means two more home games add $10.4M in revenue. And if the Yankees then go on to the World Series, they’d get at least another two home games and probably add even more than that.
In theory, a win today could give the Yankees eight more postseason games at home, and a total revenue of $92M additional dollars. That not only pays for the Pavano contract, it pays for Tony Womack and Jaret Wright too!
Making money is important. The Yankees can’t make more money if they don’t advance to the ALCS. That makes tonight’s game mega-important. Quite frankly, the entire financial future of the Yankees is at stake.
Go Yankees.

A lot of people are not happy about Jose Molina getting the start over Jorge Posada in tonight’s game, but is it really that big of a deal? If we assume there’s no real statistical impact on Burnett based on who his catcher is, we can compare a lineup with Posada against today’s lineup featuring Molina and see what the difference is.
With Posada
In terms of the impact to the overall lineup, with Posada playing and batting sixth, the Yankees would project to hit .285/.366/.476 and bat 43 times against an average pitcher. By linear weights, that would be worth around 6.4 batting runs. Assuming everyone plays all nine innings, the defense would be -.0667 runs worse than average. Assuming the pitching usage goes something like Burnett for six, Marte and/or Coke for one, Hughes for one, and then Mo for one, the Yankees would project to allow 4.24 runs in the game against an average team.
Runs scored: 6.4
Pitching: 4.24
Defense = -0.0667
Plugging that into Pythagenpat gives us a neutral field winning percentage of .691.
With Molina
Instead, with tonight’s lineup the Yankees would project to hit .278/.354/.457 and bat 42 times. That would be worth 6.0 batting runs.
Again, assuming everyone plays all nine innings, the defense would now be -.0046 runs worse than average due to the upgrade from Molina to Posada defensively. We’ll assume the exact same pitching usage and efficacy.
Runs scored: 6.0
Pitching: 4.24
Defense = -0.0046
Plugging that into Pythagenpat gives us a neutral field winning percentage of .659.
Using those winning percentages plugged into log 5 to estimate win probabilities versus tonight’s Twins lineup and pitching and adjusting for home field advantage tells us:
Win Probability With Posada: 64.3%
Win Probability With Molina: 61.7%
So there is an impact, but it’s small. Given the margin of error we’re dealing with here in projecting offense, defense and pitching, it’s probably not even statistically significant. This doesn’t factor in the fact that Posada would likely pinch-hit for Molina late in the game if Molina’s spot comes up in a crucial situation or that Burnett would pitch better with Molina.
Obviously, the key to this game is Burnett. He faced the Twins twice this year and had a 2.77 ERA against them, but he didn’t really pitch that well. He walked 10 in 13 innings while only striking out nine. Hiis peripherals against the Twins would yield a FIP of 4.12. He also allowed no HRs against them despite allowing 19 fly balls. Burnett’s HR/FB ratio is 10.3% over his career and in 2009 he was at 10.8%, which means he probably should have yielded a couple of HRs, aka an xFIP of 6.21. Of course, we generally don’t want to try and draw too much distinction from data at the game level due the small sample size.
If the Yankees win this game, their odds of advancing to the ALCS go from 82.1% to 93.5%. If they lose, their odds drop to 65.9%. That’s a big swing. It’s a big enough swing that we have to acknowledge the importance of this game.
The weather forecast for tonight isn’t very encouraging, although Accuweather seems to think it’ll clear up late (around 11 pm), so they may delay the game for a few hours and shoot to get it in based on what appears to be a window between 11 PM and 5 AM.
Go Yankees.

The Yankees are overwhelming favorites to win their ALDS series just about every where you look, but that can change very quickly if they don’t win tonight. C.C. Sabathia is the Yankees’ ace, and to advance through the playoffs they probably need to win all of his starts. Yeah, yeah, yeah he has a less than stellar postseason record. IT’S FIVE F’ING STARTS.
This game is important, because it’s the first game of the postseason, and the postseason is important.
In my dreams, C.C. goes seven innings allowing two hits and no runs, with Phil Hughes pitching a perfect eighth and Mo a perfect ninth. Alex Rodriguez goes 2 for 4 with a first inning HR that gives the Yankees a lead they never relinquish.
Go Yankees.

At this point, I pass the baton to MC in VA for a guest intro.
As we all know, a Major League Baseball season is 162 games long. This year,
however, a couple of American League teams are going to play a 163rd game
for the privilege of being a massive underdog in the upcoming Division
Series against the Yankees. The Twins and Tigers square off for the AL
Central crown at 5:07 PM today. Young Rick Porcello, pride of Seton Hall
Prep in West Orange, NJ goes for the Tigers. In case you haven’t heard,
he’s way better than Joba Chamberlain—maybe even almost good enough
to be the last guy in the Red Sox bullpen. The Twins will counter with
Scott Baker, who is practically an ace when you think about the rest of
Minnesota’s starters.
Now, since the Yankees are an unstoppable juggernaut, the importance of
this game is fairly limited. It’s not even clear that anyone will show up
to the Metrodome, considering that both of the Twin Cities are still hung
over from last night’s Brett Farvray show. Perhaps this game has some
importance to Rosangel Cabrera, since her husband will get to spend a few
more days out of town if the Tigers win. And maybe to Joe Mauer, who gets
an unfair extra opportunity to pad his MVP stats. And possibly to Justin
Verlander, who (according to Peter Gammons) will pitch two shutout innings
in relief tonight to win his 20th game. Loathe as I am to go along with
anything Gammo says, I could live with that outcome as long as the innings
in question are the 28th and 29th.
I might have had more to say if SG had gotten around to posting the Twins
half of his “Twins or Tigers?” analysis sooner (editor : will be posted later if necessary). At least this game
gives us a few hours to argue about which team would be more infuriating to
lose to. Other than that, whatever.
Thanks MC.
I don’t have a rooting interest in this game, as I don’t see a clear advantage for the Yankees in facing one team or the other. I do root for a 30 inning marathon that requires both teams to use every single pitcher on the roster.
Go extra innings!

I hope everyone is enjoying the 2009 season as much as I am, but there’s something at stake today that has major ramifications in 2010. The Yankees are 102 and 56, but their Pythagenpat record is only 95-63. When planning for 2010, we need to assess wins and losses compared to how good the team really is, and Pythagenpat would be a better thing to use than actual record. With Johnny Damon and Hideki Matsui coming off the books, the Yankees are going to be about six wins worse next year right off the bat. Six wins from a 102 win team still leaves you with a 96 win team. But if the Yankees are actually really a 95 win team, those six wins means they would be an 89 win team and would likely miss the playoffs.
The Yankees can secure their playoff spot for next year by winning the rest of the games this year by large margins and getting their Pythagenpat record as high as they can. That makes every game during the rest of this season very important. Starting with tonight’s game.
It’s been a series of very difficult games for the Yankees of late, and tonight is no exception. Robinson Tejeda is having a very strong year for Kansas City, although it’s mostly been as a reliever. He’s allowed just 39 hits in 68.2 innings and has struck out 82 batters. Over the last 28 days, opponents have hit .121/.259/.187 against him. Opposing him is Joba Chamberlain, who has allowed a line of .300/.360/.550 over the last 28 days. Assuming both pitchers face 27 batters in a game, we would expect Tejeda to allow 1.3 runs and Chamberlain to allow 5.3 runs.
So basically, the Yankees are starting the game down by four runs. Maybe they’ll get lucky and Yuniesky Betancourt will boot a few routine grounders and Kyle Farnsworth will pitch again and the Yanks can pilfer a 6-5 win.
Go Yankees.

Anthony Lerew has never won a major league game in his career, spread across four seasons. If you lose to a pitcher who’s never won a game, it’s embarrassing. Not being embarrassed is important, so that makes this game important.
It won’t be easy, because the Royals are averaging three runs per game for every game Lerew has started, and the Yankees have scored fewer than three runs 24 times this year.
Maybe they’ll get lucky and poke a few lucky pop ups out of their disgraceful bandbox and squeak out a 4-3 win.
Go Yankees.

Reducing the AL East magic number to 3: Important
Reducing the AL East magic number to 1: More important
Clinching the AL East at home against your bitter rivals: Most important
The Yankees can clinch the AL East today in their most important game of the season. It won’t be easy, because they’re facing Paul Byrd.
On June 13, 2006, Byrd held the Yankees to one run over seven innings. Andy Pettitte has made 30 starts this season, and has given up at least one run in 29 of them. So the odds of the Yankees having a lead after seven innings is 3.3%. Since Boston’s bullpen cannot be scored on, that means they face very long odds today. Odds on the order of -100.0%.
Maybe they’ll get lucky and Byrd will be a little off, and the umpires make enough bad calls against the Boston hitters to let Pettitte allow no runs, and can squeak this one out.
Go Yankees.

I have a confession to make. There are times where I say that games are important when they really aren’t. However, that’s not the case today. The Red Sox lead the season series against the Yankees 9-7. It is not possible to make the claim that you are better than a team that beats you in the season series. If the Yankees don’t win today, there is no chance for them to not lose the season series.
That will cast a pall on the entire 2009 season, regardless of how it ends. Even if by some miracle the Yankees make it through the crapshoot that is the MLB playoffs, Boston will always have bragging rights that they took the 2009 season series.
We can’t be having a pall on the entire 2009 season, can we? Ergo, the importance of this game is plainly obvious.
It won’t be easy to win today, just like it didn’t seem like it would be yesterday. C.C. Sabathia is having a fine season, with an 18-7 record and 3.31 ERA. He’s got a .720 winning percentage in his decisions, which is very good.
Daisuke Matsuzaka scoffs at that. Last season, he went 18-3 with a 2.90 ERA.
Wins
Matsuzaka 2008: 18
Sabathia 2009: 18
Advantage: Even
Losses
Matsuzaka 2008: 3
Sabathia 2009: 7
Advantage: Matsuzaka
ERA
Matsuzaka 2008: 2.90
Sabathia 2009: 3.31
Advantage: Matsuzaka
Matsuzaka is clearly better than Sabathia head to head. But you’re probably thinking, “why would we ignore Matsuzaka’s 2009?” That’s a fair point.
In 2009, Sabathia has given up four or more runs in a game 11 times. Matsuzaka has done it only six times. Not just that, but Sabathia has given up 16 HRs, Matsuzaka only nine. Not just that, but Sabathia has walked 46 batters, whereas Matsuzaka has only walked 22. And even though hits allowed can be skewed by the defense behind you, Matsuzaka has held opposing hitters to just 70 hits, compared to Sabathia who has allowed 87 MORE at 157. Even if we assumed all those 87 extra hits were singles, that’s a linear weights run differential of 42 runs, or four wins. Further proof that Matsuzaka is better.
Anyway, maybe, just like yesterday, the Yankees will pull off a miracle.
Go Yankees.

Regular readers know that the most important consideration in baseball is the business side of things. The Yankees opened New Yankee Stadium this year and have put a very good team on the field, which has clearly been good for business. However, the one thing they haven’t done yet in NYS is clinch a division title. Clinching a division title after missing the playoffs entirely in 2008 would be huge.
1) Playoff games mean additional revenue
2) Playoff games mean additional exposure in postseason advertising
3) Playoff games mean more concessions sold
4) Playoff games mean more good will amongst your fan base
5) Playoff games make it more likely to sell out your tickets
6) More sellouts induce product scarcity, which creates greater demand for ALL tickets
6) All that means PROFIT
7) PROFIT IS GOOD FOR BUSINESS
So yeah, the Yankees need to win the division. If they don’t sweep this series, they can’t clinch the division in front of Boston at home. Clinching the division in front of Boston at home is important. They can’t sweep this series if they don’t win tonight’s game. That makes tonight’s game seriously important.
It won’t be easy. While Zack Greinke deserves to win the Cy Young and probably will, Lester has been outpitching him over their last 20 starts.
Lester: 135.3 IP, 102 H, 8 HR, 39 BB, 153 K, 2.13 ERA, 2.59 FIP, Opponents hitting: .207/.264/.297
Greinke: 134.3 IP, 120 H, 11 HR, 35 BB, 141 K, 2.68 ERA, 2.99 FIP, Opponents hitting: .237/.288/.368
So not only do the Yankees have to deal with Lester, they’re throwing out Joba Chamberlain, who’s been awful lately. It’s possibly his last chance to make a case for being the fourth starter in the postseason, and we know he’s shown the talent to be a good starter before, so maybe he’ll surprise us and not give up seven runs in the second inning.
Go Yankees.

That makes tonight’s game really important. Plus, it’d be nice to see A.J. Burnett pitch a few decent games before tanking in the postseason.

The Yankees have lost three of their last five games. In the process, their magic number for clinching the AL East has gone down from 14 to 12. Shrinking the magic number by two every five games with 16 games remaining means that at the end of the season, the magic number would still be six. If it’s six, that means the Yankees will have failed to win the division.
Winning the division is important. Really important. That makes today’s game really important.
Go Yankees.

Yanks get their first look at highly-touted Chris Tillman if Mother Nature cooperates. The Yankees haven’t called the game despite a torrential downpour because open gates plus people waiting for a game that may or may not start while eating hot dogs and drinking beer is good for business.
This game, if played, is important. I can’t tell you exactly why right now, but trust me on this. If it’s rained out, then it will have turned that it actually wasn’t important.

There was a time not that long ago where a game that was being started by Joba Chamberlain was something to look forward to. Nowadays, not so much. Joba’s pitching his way off the postseason roster, so tonight’s an important game for him if he wants to stay there. The Yankees need Joba to pitch better, because the prospect of having to use Chad Gaudin or Sergio Mitre as the #4 starter in the postseason if the Yankees are miraculously able to stave off the red-hot Red Sox isn’t particularly enticing, which makes this game important for them too.
So this game isn’t just important. It’s double-important.
Go Yankees.

A Yankee win tonight knocks the Rays’ tragic number down to six. With Boston hosting Baltimore tonight in a guaranteed win, the Yankees absolutely HAVE to win this game if they want to shrink their magic number. Shrinking one’s magic number is important, so any game where that can be accomplished is important by diffusion.

I would be shocked if Sonnanstine does NOT pitch well in this game, despite those ugly numbers. As every Yankee fan knows, A.J. Burnett’s going through a rough patch. Can the Yankees not only do that, but win behind a scuffling Joba Chamberlain and continue their seven game winning streak? How many innings will the Joba rules allow tonight? Two? Three? Four? The Yankees may lead Boston by six games in the loss column, but they have yet to win a game at Fenway this season. I don’t think any AL East team has ever gone 0 for Fenway and won the World Series in the same season. Also, our very own Jonathan will be covering the game on location for Stats Inc., and a Yankee loss would ruin his night. Not ruining Johathan’s night is really important, which means this game is really important too.
Go Yankees.
Jonathan:
5:30pm - Just met Pete Abraham. Very nice guy.
5:50pm - I took some pictures of some Yankees with my phone when I was down on the field before the game. Unfortunately I left my usb hookup at home. I’ll post anything decent tomorrow.
Some Notes: Posada needs two doubles to tie Bob Meusel (339) for ninth place on the Yankees’ all-time doubles list.
Rivera needs just 9 strikeouts to reach 1,000 for his career.
6:15pm - There is a monster thunderstorm moving up the east coast. There is likely to be a delay, at which time I may bring you an exclusive interview with John Sterling’s assistant.
6:55pm - Papelbon is out on the field carrying his infant child for some kind of pregame ceremony. His wife is very attractive. Hope the kid gets her looks. And personality.
7:05pm - During the National Anthem, singer Nadia Bjorlin stumbled with one of the lines early on. The fans got a bit restless.
Lineup cards now being exchanged as Pettitte comes in from taking warmups in the pen.
First inning notes:
Ow, looks like that foul ball caught Damon in a not so fun area.
Joe West’s strikezone is mighty wide. Better be the same for Pettitte.
It doesn’t look like Pettitte is getting the outside strike at all.
Second inning notes:
West’s strikezone officially sucks.
Pettitte seems determined to go 3-2 on every batter.
Third inning notes:
Damon left with a bruised right knee.
Fourth inning notes:
This game has been a bitch to cover. All those doubles down the line - I have terrible sight lines from the box.
But my night has not been ruined yet, thanks to SG and the Yanks.
Fifth inning notes:
Since Bowden entered the game, the Red Sox bullpen has not moved. Seems like Francona is determined not to burn out too many arms in this first game. He’s thrown 33 pitches already.
My dad just texted me: “No mercy are you smiling? love dad”
Even with a big lead, Pettitte feels the need to battle.
Ninth inning notes:
The stadium is about half full now.
Less than half full. Pin dropish.

Winning this game would give the Yankees a series win in the first two series of a nine game road trip. They are off tomorrow before heading into Boston for three games. Chad Gaudin makes his first start as a Yankee, possibly vying for a full-time rotation spot if he pitches well. That makes this an important game for Gaudin. Since’s Gaudin’s a Yankee, it thus makes it an important game for them as well.
Go Yankees.

Win Probability: The Yankees’ probability for winning this game is 51.9%.
What’s on my iPod? Nothing. I don’t own an iPod.
How do you erase the fact that you lost your first eight games to your main division rival? Start beating them like a rented mule. Tonight’s game gives the Yankees a chance to sweep their biggest series of the season and essentially bury the Red Sox in the AL East divisional race.
If the Yankees win tonight, they will be 69-42 and the Red Sox will be 62-48. That means if the Yankees go 26-25 (ending at 95-67) the rest of the way, Boston would have to go 33-19 (a 103 win pace) just to tie them. The Yankees are too good to only go 26-25, so every other win above that makes the Red Sox’s task that much more difficult.
Also, I have not broken any of my stuff yet, and if the Yankees win tonight I won’t. And I’m already slightly happy, but if the Yankees win tonight I’ll be very happy.
Because of those factors, tonight’s game is extra-special important. Like super-duper important.
Go Yankees.

Once again I had to post this before lineups were available because I’m on the road, but using both teams’ standard lineups the Yankees’ probability of winning today is: 61.7% 99.999999%.
Some clown guaranteed a win in this game, and his reputation is riding on it. C.C. is the Yankees’ best starter, but the Yankees have only been around .500 in his starts, including a tough loss in Boston where Joe Girardi left him in too long. Anyhow, this game is seriously important, because I guaranteed a win, and I don’t like looking like a fool.
Go Yankees.

Winning baseball games is important, but playing the game the right way is even more important. No one excels at that like Josh Beckett. If the Yankees can somehow beat him, they’ll not only get a win, but they’ll have done it by playing the game the right way. That sets an example for the children, who are our future. Teach them well and let them lead the way. Because of that, this game is really important. It’s more than just a game, it will shape the future.

The Yankees’ probability of winning this game is: 58.2%
Joba Chamberlain has been on fire since the All Star Break, with an ERA of 0.83 and having allowed just 8 hits in 21.2 innings while walking 8 and striking out 19. John Smoltz has also been on fire, with an ERA of 9.18 and having allowed a mere 26 hits in 16.2 innings, walking 1 and striking out 13. Pinpoint control by Smoltz.
On paper, Saturday’s Sabathia vs. Buchholz matchup is a bigger mismatch than tonight’s game, but this is the second most favorable pitching matchup for the Yankees. Beckett and Lester are tough draws, so the Yankees absolutely HAVE to win this game if they want to feel comfortable about at least splitting this series at a minimum. Ergo, tonight’s game is extremely important. In fact, it’s probably the most important game EVER at the New Yankee Stadium.
Go Yankees.

I just want to take a moment to note that today marks the 30th anniversary of Thurman Munson’s tragic death. I was a little too young to understand it at the time, but I can’t imagine what it must have been like for his family, his teammates, and for Yankee fans old enough to understand it.

Over his last six home starts, Gavin Floyd is 4-0 with a 1.69 ERA, with 38 strikeouts in 42.2 innings. Oh noes! With the Red Sox already having won their game earlier today and about to add Roy Halladay to their rotation for a package of Jon Van Every and George Kottaras or some such, that makes this game extremely important for the Yankees. It’s about as close to a must-win game as you can have on July 30.

I might have thrown Hinske in RF for today, but that’s a minor quibble.
Garza’s coming off a complete game five hitter against Toronto where he walked none and fanned nine, and is having a good season overall. Joba’s had two good starts since the All Star Break after a Ponsonian stretch of three games where he pitched 13.1 innings and allowed 27 hits and 16 runs. Let’s hope for more good Joba and not Joba Pontoon.
Go Yankees.

While the Yankees may lead the Rays by 6.5 games in the real standings, in the far more important PythagenPat standings, they trail by 0.8 games. Although you can technically still win the division if you trail in the PythagenPat standings, you have to be considered a major fluke and an embarrassment to baseball.
Because of that, this series is ultra-important. Because tonight’s game is the opener of an ultra-important series, it is by definition ultra-important.

The umpire awards Roberts first base as soon as he enters the box just to save time. OK, not really - instead A.J. defies the universe and strike Roberts out looking.
Jones lines one to center and Gardner attempts a dive for it but comes up with grass instead. Single.
Fielder’s choice for Markakis as he grounds one to Teix who throws to Jeter to get Jones.
On the first pitch Huff flies out to center. An 8 pitch inning. Noice.
Bottom of the first:
On the first pitch Jeter hits a hard liner to left center that goes to the wall. A double. Shweet.
Damon lines out to right. No advancement for Jetes.
Teix hits a hard line drive single to center. So hard, in fact, that Jeter needs to stop at third.
A-Rod pulls the bat head in and takes an inside pitch to left for an RBI line drive single. 1-0 Yankees
I very much like seeing Matsui hit well. He hits into a 4-6 FC. Two down with runners on the corners. (clarification for sleepyirv, the Matsui grounder was a slow chopper)
Posada walks on a 3-2 count. Bases loaded.
Cano not interested in taking pitches as he swings at the first two pitches and fouls them off. As well with the third which goes down the left field line and just into the stands. Pie almost made a leaping grab into the stands. On the next pitch, Cano grounds a slow chopper over the right side of the mound and Roberts can’t come up with it clean as a run comes in. It goes as a hit. 2-0 Yankees
Swisher hits a hard liner to somewhat right center which plates two. Cano goes to third and Swish stops at first. 4-0 Yankees
Gardner flies out to short right to end a very good offensive inning for the Yankees.
Orioles…..0
Yankees…..4
Top of the second:
Wiggington strikes out swinging on a nice curve from A.J.
Scott hits a hard liner off the wall in right for a long single. Missed a HR by about 3 feet.
On the next pitch, Zaun lines one to right for a single. Scott to 2nd.
On the second pitch, Posada tries a pickoff at second to Jeter. But not close. Pie grounds one in the hole to short and Jeter gets the force at second. Throw to first not in time.
Wow, very close play at second on a slow grounder up the middle. Jeter makes the flip to Cano JUST in time to get Pie. Inning over.
Bottom of the second:
Jeter lines out to center on the first pitch.
Damon flies out to right.
Teixeira grounds out to first on a check swing. That inning kinda sucked.
Top of the third:
Roberts hits a hard liner to right and Swisher completely botches the catch. Unbelievable. Roberts to second on the error.
Jones hits a hard grounder just out of the reach of Cano and Roberts goes to third. Roberts had to hold since it looked like Cano might have been able to grab the ball before it hit the dirt.
Markakis fouls out down the line to left. Jones tags and goes to second. It wasn’t deep enough, apparently, for Roberts to tag on.
Huff strikes out on a nasty breaking ball down and in.
Holy bejesus, on a slicing liner to right, Swish redeems himself with a fantastic jumping grab for the last out of the inning. Wowzers. Ya know who he is? Even Steven.
Bottom of the third:
A-Rod chops one to the pitcher for the 1-3 play.
Matsui grounds out to second.
Posada decides the offense is not done and drills a HR into the Yankee bullpen. 5-0 Yankees
Cano grounds out to second.
Orioles…..0
Yankees…..5
Top of the fourth:
Luke Scott walks although ball four looked like a strike to me.
Zaun strikes out swinging.
Pie flies out to Gardner.
Burnett does the absolute unforgivable and walks Andino. Flat out stupid.
Now O’Nora is squeezing him on the outside strike. But Roberts grounds out to Cano to end it.
Bottom of the fourth:
Swisher walks.
Gardner grounds into a fielder’s choice, 1-6. Throw to first not in time. Actually gets away from Huff but no advance.
Jeter lines out to right. He’s hit the ball hard in pretty much every AB so far.
Zaun throws out Gardner stealing. Does not register.
Top of the fifth:
Jones swings at strike three in the dirt. Posada comes up with the block and the throw to first for the out.
Markakis grounds out to second.
Huff grounds one down the line that Teixeira takes himself for the out. Good quick inning for the Burnster.
Bottom of the fifth:
Damon grounds out to Huff.
Teixeira flies out. The offense has sorta stuttered a bit since the first.
Yep, a groundout from A-Rod for the last out. 6 pitch inning. WTF mate?
Top of the sixth:
Jeter makes a nice play on a ball in the hole to get Wiggington on the throw to first.
Another great play by Swisher on a deep fly ball to right. He leaped at the wall and grabbed it at the top. Probably would have been off the top of the wall.
Zaun walks.
Pie flies out to center.
Bottom of the sixth:
Matsui strikes out looking. What happened to first inning Berken?
Posada grounds out to first.
Cano hits a soft liner into right center for a single. Hooray offense!
Swisher flies out to Jones in left center.
Liveblog must cease as I need to do some work. Go Yanks.

The Yankees are now 15 games over .500. If they play .500 for the rest of the year, they’d end the season 88.5 - 73.5. Since that is not possible given the rules of MLB, that makes this game important. Win this one, then go .500 over the rest of the season and they end up at 89-73. That is entirely possible.
Go Yankees.
