Time to sweep the birds.
Pre-game chatter: The Tigers lost again today to the Indians, which pretty much eliminates them from the playoffs. So sorry, Detroit.
Burres pitched well against the Yankees back on July 28th, allowing 4 hits over 6 innings and just 1 earned run. Pettitte has good numbers against the Oriole hitters. Corey Patterson seems to be the one exception. Luckily, he’s not in the lineup. I’ll take it. EDIT:He’s out due to a sprained ankle.
After last night, the Yankees’ chances at the division are up to 10% according to BPro (21% based on the ELO rating scheme). Do you believe in miracles?
I’ll be around but Keith is likely going to take the liveblog unless someone else jumps in.

The story so far: Burres and Pettitte have similar lines—both have given up five hits; two walks, four Ks for Burres and one walk, three Ks for Pettitte. The difference in the game: Gojira hit his 25th home run, a solo shot that made it 1-0, which is the sum total of the scoring.
Bottom of the 5th
Eyechart got a single to right. After Melky flies out to Fahey, El Capitan singles to center, sending Dougie-Doug to second. Abreu grounds into a force out, nailing Jeter at second, Min-K-Vitch to third.
Mr. MVP with two on and two out. Burres then throws a wild pitch that allows Mxyzptlk to score, making it 2-0. Abreu moves to second. Mr. MVP then flies out to deep left field sufficiently hard that Sterling was fooled into starting his home run call and getting my hopes up, the fucker. Fahey—who came in after Payton was ejected—crashed into the wall to make the catch.
Top of the 6th
The Tikester flies out to left. Roberts walks. Sterling announces that this is Pettitte’s first walk. It’s, in fact, his second—he walked Mora in the fourth. When Mora comes up and Sterling announces that he’s singled and walked, only then does he realizes he was wrong. What a fucknut.
Roberts steals second. Off Pettitte. In other news, hell froze over. Roberts then steals third. Fuck me sideways. Mora singles Roberts in to cut the lead to 2-1.
Tejada grounds to A-Rod, who boots it, picks it up, and throws Tejada out. Because Misspelling stretched for it, Waldman takes the opportunity to fellate the first baseman some more, which makes me want to strangle a small, defenseless animal.
Markakis hits a dunker to center, but Melky runs in and makes the catch to end it.
Bottom of the 6th
Jorgie Porgie grounds out to Mora. Feh.
Gojira grounds to Millar. Double feh.
Young Robinson grounds to Tejada. Triple feh.
Top of the 7th
Millar cowboys up a line drive right at Jeter on the first pitch. Huff flies out to Melky. Hernandez socks a single up the middle. Fahey strikes out swinging on three pitches to end it.
Pettitte has thrown 96 pitches. Wonder if he’ll pitch the eighth, or if they’ll bring in Joba the Hutt….
Bottom of the 7th
Boston Public Enemy #1 strikes out swinging. Mxyzptlk grounds out to Millar.
Melky draws a walk. He’s now gotten on base twice in one game, which last happened when dinosaurs roamed the Earth. El Capitan strikes out to end it.
Top of the 8th
Pettitte comes back out to pitch the eighth, despite Joba being sighted warming up in the bullpen. I wonder if he’ll pitch the ninth.
The Tike-Monger flies out on the second pitch. Roberts grounds to short third. A-Rod zooms in to throw him out.
Pettitte out, Joba the Hutt in. I coulda sworn the Joba Rules stated that he had to start an inning….
After a ball outside, Joba throws a 96 MPH fastball on the corner, then an 88 MPH slider on the corner for strike two. Then Mora strikes out swinging on another slider.
JOBA JOBA HEY!
Bottom of the 8th
Abreu strikes out swinging. Burres is pitching an excellent game that he’s very likely to lose—yet another reason why won-lost records are incredibly overrated as a stat that actually tells you anything useful about a pitcher.
He’s also done pitching it. Burres out, Chad Bradford in.
A-Rod strikes out swinging on a pitch nowhere near the strike zone. He is doing some serious slumping.
Jorgie Porgie gets hit by an 0-1 pitch. Gojira then grounds out to Roberts to end it. Bah.

Joba out, Mo in.
Mo goes to 2-2 on Tejada, who then grounds out to Jeter.
Markakis hits a dunker down the right-field line for a double.
Millar works the count to 3-2, then flies out to Gojira.
Mo throws two balls to Huff, then a called strike, then a foul. A low pitch for ball three, then a foul to keep it at 3-2. Then he misses with the cutter to walk him.
First and second, two outs, Hernandez up.
First pitch inside, 1-0.
Second pitch also inside, 2-0.
Hernandez swings through the third pitch to make it 2-1.
A foul ball makes it 2-2.
Another foul. Still 2-2. Then another.
The seventh pitch is called a ball, which 54,000 umpires disagree with. Then another ball to load the bases for Fahey.
Or, rather, for Scott Moore, a rookie who is pinch hitting for Fahey. Also Luis Hernandez in to pinch run for Huff at second.
Mo quickly goes to 1-2 on Moore, who has yet to get the bat off his shoulder. And the poor kid stands and stares at the fourth pitch, which is called a strike to end it.
That’s a series sweep, four in a row, 24 games over .500, Andy Pettitte’s 200th career win, 1.5 games out of first place (that’s a gain of 13 games, for the two of you who didn’t know that), and 5.5 ahead of Detroit in the WC race.
Wow. What a fucked-up season this has been.
Goodnight, everybody!
