YES: Giambi homers, Rivera returns to save Yankees’ win

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP)—The New York Yankees finally got the reliable pitching and road victory they’ve been looking for.

Jason Giambi homered, Sidney Ponson beat his former Texas teammates and Mariano Rivera returned from an aching back to save New York’s 5-3 win over the Rangers on Wednesday night.

Seeing Mo out there sure was nice.  Let’s hope Pudge isn’t banged up too bad

On ESPN’s baseball standings page they have projected division, wild card, and playoff odds for every team, every day. (Which is f’ing sweet, BTW)

The attached URL (I’m too lazy to link right now) is to the comments section for the story where ESPN introduces the concept.

Wow, does that ever make me thankful that this site, and this community exists.

http://myespn.go.com/s/conversations/show/story/3474432

A-Rod must go.  Immediately.

There seemed to be a lot of question yesterday over the extant of Joba’s injury.  Nomaas has a nice write-up today, and in particular I think this should be of interest to everyone:

“Now, about tendinitis. By definition, tendinitis is the inflammation or irritation of a tendon. Because a tendon is a fibrous structure, microscopic tears can occur. That is the extent of the tearing that would be involved with this injury. Referring to tendinitis as another name for a tear is a bit sensationalistic to say the least.”

Basically, if this were Pettitte or Moose we wouldn’t be worried.  The only player that would be out more than a few weeks with this injury would be Pavano.

Favre and the NY media? After the crazy fawning he got in Wisconsin? Barf.

A win’s a win, and I’m thinking there should be an end to the “sack Snacks” talk until either we get people back or he sucks again. The last 2 starts haven’t been smoke and mirrors either, for the most part. 3 runs in 6 1/3 and a whip slightly over 1 against Texas is pretty good.

Yes, but the issue is that the Yankees might not be able to afford missing Joba for a few weeks this late in the season.

its kind of annoying pete abe keeps saying that the yankees withhold injury information. He cites the cases of posada, wang, rodriguez, bruney and hughes. This is only true in posadas case. Everyone knew wangs injury was bad as soon as the diagnosis became public. Same with bruney. A-rod only missed a brief stint for precautionary reasons and hughes didnt even know he was injured. If the yanks knew hughes was injured they would have pulled the plug on him MUCH sooner.

so pete abe…WTF?

i guess i dont mean withholding injury information…i mean playing it down

Yes, but the issue is that the Yankees might not be able to afford missing Joba for a few weeks this late in the season.

It’s probably 3 starts.  True those three starts could be crucial (3 wins could be the difference between playing in October or not), but there’s also a chance that Kennedy could pitch like he did down the stretch last year, or even a little better.  Ditto with Hughes.  I’m not going to worry about something I can’t control.  Either the Yankees are going to play well enough to make the post-season, or they aren’t.  I’d prefer the former, but if it’s the latter…

I’m not going to worry about something I can’t control.

I think a lot of people would be a lot happier if they did this.  Now, I’m pretty good with it myself, but since none of us can control anything about our team, doesn’t this take some of the fun out of it?

so pete abe…WTF?

Abraham has some sort of personal vendetta against Girardi.  it’s borderline unprofessional.  i guess he was used to sweet Papa Joe T buying ice cream for all of the beat writers and doesn’t care for Girardi’s no-nonsense approach.

for example:  he made a huge deal about the Yankees pretending Posada was going to rehab for 2 weeks and try to come back as the DH, risking the start of the 2009 season.

anyone with half a brain could see that the Yankees were posturing while they tried to trade for a RH bat.

lo and behold, as soon as the deadline passed, Posada had the surgery.

it’s not rocket science.

i don’t know if the yankees gain anything by witholding this information.  over the course of the season, it’s effect is probably negligible.

but Abraham’s “i owe it to my readers!!11” holier than thou BS has really worn thin.

why on earth would the Yankees TELL opposing teams that Posada is in serious pain whenever he throws to 2B??  it’s common sense, but Abraham has an agenda.

he’s good when he just reports.  when he opines?  it’s brutal.  and don’t get me started on the comments section…

Why on earth would you even approach the comments section?  Based on the sheer number of comments you know you’re in for some painful delirium.

Now, I’m pretty good with it myself, but since none of us can control anything about our team, doesn’t this take some of the fun out of it?

Not sure what you mean.  Worrying about the team is more fun?  I’m pretty sure that’s not what you mean.

I look at it this way.  Instead of worrying about if/when Joba will come back, I’m going to instead look FORWARD to when Joba comes back, and ANTICIPATE getting to see Kennedy and Hughes instead.  I’m just as invested in the team as a guy worrying, “who will pitch teh eighth!!”, but happier smile

Now, if I ever get rich and buy a baseball team (even an independent one), then I’ll worry about stuff like this.

Abe is not winning any fans with his pro-patriots rants. The comments section is pretty fun to look at every once in a while there. Also, did anybody read Kepner’s articles in the times today? His editor must have been off because they are very poorly written and this is coming from a (borderline illiterate)finance major.

he’s good when he just reports.  when he opines?  it’s brutal.  and don’t get me started on the comments section…

I agree. His baseball analysis sucks and I have no doubt that he is a Red Sox fan.

I’m pretty sure that’s not what you mean.

Just that “worrying” can be construed as “caring about”.  Having the down times makes the up times just a little better.

Just that “worrying” can be construed as “caring about”.

Oh yeah, if you are worrying you care.  There are a lot of worriers here, and they certainly care.  Probably as recently as five years ago I was a worrier.  I don’t think I care any less now, but I don’t worry nearly as much.  If it’s stuff I can control, I’ll worry.  If not?

Saw on Chad Jennings block taht Moeller cleared waivers and is back in Scranton.  There was this from the entry: “To make room for Moeller on the roster, the Yankees released catcher JD Closser.”

I couldn’t be happier.  One-third of the games I was at this year, Closser was the STARTING DH.  The backup catcher.  I personally think the biggest thing the Yankees could do to improve their farm system is replace Dave Miley, but that’s just me.

block taht = blog that

Now the fact that my fingers don’t do what I want them to, THAT I’ll worry about!

ever watch Mo in frame by frame?  His consistency is unreal.

Freddy Garcia?  So it has come to this?

So, with the current status we may have Kennedy now, Hughes in 2 starts and Joba in 3. This is kind of what we wanted at the beginning of the year. Should be interesting.

Freddy Garcia?  So it has come to this?

did they sign him?

and yes, it has come to this.

Clay, hopefully we can tread water until that situaton arises.  If we can do that and Jeter, Cano, and Melky revert back to form then we should be well placed for a serious run.  Is Fredddy Garcia really preferable to Rasner or Pontoon?  I mean, a guy who couldn’t get it done in AAAA and is topping out at 85MPH (if that is the case) does not sound too appealing to me.  If we’re talking Garcia and Pavana why not David Wells?  I still love that fat bastard.

Melky revert back to form

Wasn’t that the problem in the first place?

If Sidney is going to be the savior this year, I guess I’m glad the Yanks got him.

Pavano is an option only if Joba doesn’t come back or Hughes and/or Kennedy suck again. He’s still several weeks away optimistically(?).

Melky’s form hopefully= 85-90 OPS+

April Melky for about 2 weeks would be loverly.

Who is this Pavano?  I’m talking about American Idol Carla Pavana…

Who is this Pavano?  I’m talking about American Idol Carla Pavana…

He is Carla’s lesser known, slightly retarded, and less successful cousin.

Freddy Garcia?  So it has come to this?

What?  You don’t like the Rock?

“What?  You don’t like the Rock? “

Im more of a “Stone Cold” Steve Austin guy. After yankee victories i get on the top turnbuckle at my house and pour two beers down my throat.

Please post a picture after the next win.

I actually like Freddy Garcia.  With a quick look at his line, he’s got a good K/BB rate, even last year with the Phillies, but he gave up a lot of HRs.  Moving from Citizens Bank to Yankee Stadium would ameliorate that quite a bit I would think.

My biggest concern would be the fact that he hasn’t pitched in the majors in over a year.

Sorry about, all of the, commas.

“Please post a picture after the next win. “

I will have to blur out my face because The Frog sexually threatened me and he already knows where i go to school

The Frog strikes me as teh Kurt Vonnegut from Animal House sexual predator type- he teaches Anthropology or Sociology, smokes a pipe, and wears a jacket with patches at the elbows.

This has probably been said already but FUCKING JEFF KARSTENS

Bebop- relax- he’s pitching in AAAA.  He’d be a typical clown along the lines of Aaron Small, Chase Wright, etc. in the AL East. I’m happy for him.

Yeah, I don’t really get how anyone can be made at the guy.  It’s not like he was dogging it on the Yankees.  He was more useful to the yankees to aquire Nady and Marte.  I sort of enjoy seeing people dominate in the NL.

mad, not made. duh.

Yeah i am very happy for him. The kid has been working hard in the minors and trying to make the most of his big league shots. He pitched with a broken leg against the redsox and worked hard to come back from various injuries.

I never thouht they would be able to separate rasner and karstens….it seemed like they were always under the same circumstances

Karstens had no future in the AL. He is a flyball pitcher without good stuff.

PagsRags:  It’s true.  I even seduced your girlfriend, just out of boredom.

Pags, i think you are melding two classic movies- Back to School and Animal House.

Kurt Vonnegut was in Back to School

Donald Sutherland was the professor in Animal House.

that is my contribution for the day.

I’m not mad at Karstens, I wish him well, its just kind of ironic how bad he was for us last year, and I was a big Rasner enthusiast and Karstens detractor, but even pitching in the NL against a weak hitting team that was a helluva game he pitched yesterday and if had showed an inkling of that ability certainly he could have proved useful to us in this injury plagued year.

I wish him well, its just kind of ironic how bad he was for us last year

Karstens biggest problem was when he was introducted to Pavano, he made the mistake of shaking his hand.  I understand that was part of his, “rookie hazing”.  After that, several trips to the DL were expected.  In fact, if I understand it correctly, when Karstens heard Pavano might be in Scranton for some rehab, he *asked* the Yankees to include him in the Pittsburg trade.

Karstens is the Scary Flyball Guy.  I wish him only the best in the <strike>AAAA</strike> NL.  However, nothing good would ever have come from having him face Boston, Tampa, LAAoOC, and the like.

yup- good call. I knew something was amiss there. Back to school is one of my favorites of all time. favorite line is probably

“boy i’d like to tame her shrew”

RIP rodney

Sonuvabitch, the Red Sox are close to picking up Brian Giles.

That annoys me.

BTW what’s with the slew of “ignored members” lately.  I see few to no posts here that are offensive and yet today there was a third or fourth member listed as “ignored” in the last couple of weeks.  I know someone posted a few racist remarks last year but since then I can’t think of any posts or posters that deserve such a label

How does a guy like Giles get through Waivers with teams like The Mutts and Marlins and Cards in need of offense?

[53] You nominally have control over who is ignored (see the account page), but there is some coupling between others’ ignore lists and what you see.  Someone started ignoring me recently following a disagreement and now on occasion I see my own comments displayed as ignored.  Pray to the powers-that-be.

I have no idea, Pags.

It’s absurd.

And he’s not even signed for next year! It’s a TEAM option!!

Of the 3 or 4 “ignored” members there is only one who you could construct a tortured case against.  To ignore someone who you disagree with is beyond silly and defeats a purpose of this site.  If disagreement is too painful soliloquy is always available.

How could the Mutts not take Giles.  Minaya’s halo from year’s past is lipping of his head.

I don’t see the difference between not reading x’s comments (because they are whateverist or even just tiresome) and privately turning off those comments in one’s own display.  The only problem is the bleedthrough to other readers, hence the prayer suggestion.

Perhaps it says something about David Ortiz’s wrist that we haven’t been told.

I suppose you’ve got a point Rilke.  I routinely allow all comments.  But I suppose a new member might assume someone is really obnoxious, or worse a Red Sox lurker and miss out on the some future Yankee philosopher king.

“Minaya’s halo from year’s past is lipping of his head”

Really, that ship already sailed.

Totally off topic but whatever happened to baileywalk? Miss his passion on these boards.

Ditto with Keith

baileywalk shows up on WasWatching, on occasion, and to a much lesser degree on Pending Pinstripes. Maybe he posts elsewhere.

The plethora of ignored members is probably some kind of system bug.

I sure would ignore me if I were you.

The plethora of ignored members is probably some kind of system bug.

It has something to do with SG’s fix to prevent the “500 errors” and whatnot.

I sure would ignore me if I were you.

I’d certainly <strike>annoy</strike> ignore myself if I ever read what I typed <strike>before</strike> after posting it.

“View / Hide comment from ignored member: the Frog”

Yeah, alright, this is crazy.  Powers-that-be, could you just turn off the ignore feature entirely for now?

I ignore myself all the time.  Makes for interesting conversations inside my head.

my fantasy baseball season is riding on cole hamels arm right now..

The random ignoring is a bad interaction between the individual ignore lists and the way pages are cached for faster serving.

(oo baby, I like it when you make stuff up)

err..

Wow, lightning literally just hit right outside my window.
I need to go check my pants right now.

If I close my eyes there are no posts on the screen, and no screen, and no one else in the office, and no office.  Its all in my imagination.  I’m a solipsist.  Maybe I should imagine the Yankees are doing better this year and Tony Clark’s ball didn’t bounce into the stands in 04 and Gonzales’ blooper didnt fall in in 01 and….

one time when i was a little dcristal lighting struck my house while i was playing a video game…i squeezed the controller so tight i broke a couple fingers

It’s pretty hard to understand that the entire NL passed on Giles, plus everyone below the Red Sox in the AL standings.  Giles does still have the right to block a trade to Boston, and he gets a $2M bonus if he agrees to a trade.  Waivers and waiver claims don’t trump NTCs or 10/5 rights.

Where do you live Jonathon and more importantly will the lightning emperil Hughes’s start

How does a guy like Giles get through Waivers with teams like The Mutts and Marlins and Cards in need of offense?

has to be more to this than we know.

maybe teams know that Giles won’t approve a trade to certain places?

Giles’ contract allows him to block deals to the Orioles, Red Sox, Tigers, Rays, Marlins, Brewers, Pirates, and Nationals.  You will note that the team that won the claim is on the list.  Maybe the Red Sox were just trying to block the Rays and/or Angels.

Oh no!? Lightning struck Phil Hughes?

Where do you live Jonathon and more importantly will the lightning emperil Hughes’s start

Oh please, just admit you’re a stalker and be done with it.

IIRC, Jonathan is in CT someplace.

Waivers and waiver claims don’t trump NTCs or 10/5 rights.

I thought I read somewhere recently that waiver-claims *do* trump the NTC.  IOW, Giles can block a *trade* to Boston, but if SD doesn’t revoke the waiver on him he’ll still go to Boston.  I’m not sure where I read that but I’ll try to find it.  No promises as an hour from now I probably won’t be on a computer the rest of the day, and I really should complete some work today.

Oh, and that assumes that Boston put in a claim on him and not that he passed completely through waivers.  I haven’t followed this enough yet to know which.

Yet another blown win for Santana. Wow.

Where do you live Jonathon and more importantly will the lightning emperil Hughes’s start?

I work about 10-12 miles from PNC Field in Moosic.  I went out to lunch around noon and it was raining lightly then.  I haven’t been near a window recently.

Good ol’ West Hartford.  Still coming down in buckets with scary lightning.

My wife and I really miss New York City food.  There really isn’t a decent chinese or pizza place around here….

50% chance of T storms in Scranton around game time.  Wonder if Yank’s will switch him.

Oh, and that assumes that Boston put in a claim on him and not that he passed completely through waivers.  I haven’t followed this enough yet to know which.

Boston claimed him.

I thought I read somewhere recently that waiver-claims *do* trump the NTC.  IOW, Giles can block a *trade* to Boston, but if SD doesn’t revoke the waiver on him he’ll still go to Boston.

I have no doubt that you read it somewhere.  I’ve read the same thing myself.  But it’s wrong.

Think about it.  If teams could get around NTCs and 10/5 rights with waivers, they’d do it all the time.  For example, team A wants to trade player X to team B for prospects Y and Z, but player X has a full NTC.  No problem: team A waives player X and team B claims him.  Then team B trades prospects Y and Z to team A for future considerations in a separate deal.  NTCs and 10/5 rights would be worthless if teams could do this, and there’s no way that the MLBPA would stand for that.

There’s a new thread, y’all.  Come on over.

There really isn’t a decent chinese or pizza place around here

No kidding, your best bet is to make the trek to New Haven. But at least your in Hartford, my hometown and surrounding area is/was awful. Only thing missing from LA is some decent pizza.

Think about it.  If teams could get around NTCs and 10/5 rights with waivers, they’d do it all the time.

Yeah, probably.  The place where I thought I read it, I didn’t (on Pete Abe’s blog, but copied from Paul DePodesta’s).  If it came (indirectly) from DePodesta I figured it would be reliable, since he should know.  But since it didn’t, and I have no idea where I read it, it was probably from the NY Post or something which means it has no credability.

There’s a new thread, y’all.  Come on over.

Yeah, but you have to be careful crossing threads.  It could be the end of all life as we know it.

Total protonic reversal.

“There’s a new thread, y’all.  Come on over.”

didnt saying stuff like that get you on the list of sex offenders?

Actually, DePo recently had a post on waiver transactions on his blog, and in the comments specifically says that “Players with no-trade clauses can block assignments made through the waiver process.”
Scroll down to find it.

Ah well, just cut and past it.

.  Powers-that-be, could you just turn off the ignore feature entirely for now?

Yep, done.  I advise everyone to use mental ignore for now.

John Brattain Memorial Fund

The Hardball Times has set up a memorial fund for John Brattain's family. He left behind a wife and two teenage daughters.

Four years ago, I found from personal experience how generous the online community can be to its own in their hour of need. I am now literally begging you to be even more generous than you were to me.
