Yankees.com: Mitre doesn’t disrupt Yankees’ roll
NEW YORK—Prior to Tuesday’s game, Joe Girardi took time to denounce the notion that he is managing a rather streaky team. Then the Yankees went out and proved him wrong again.
Their 6-4 win over the Orioles was their fifth straight since the All-Star break, after a three-game losing streak in Anaheim that followed a run of 13 wins in 15 games. The Yankees are quite streaky, no question about it. But so far, their good streaks have far outweighed the bad.
This latest effort came thanks in large part to Sergio Mitre, joining the Yankees before the game to make his first start since Sept. 15, 2007. Mitre allowed four runs (three earned) in 5 2/3 innings, striking out four and walking one. Other than the three singles he allowed in the sixth inning—the third of them a two-run hit off the bat of Melvin Mora—Mitre remained in control of the game.
I was pretty happy with Mitre’s performance. I’m not expecting a ton out of him, but if he can pitch 5-6 innings and keep the other team at 3-4 runs most of the time, he’ll be in line to help this team win a fair amount of games.
Oh, and with Boston losing at Texas, guess who’s in sole possession of first place in the AL East? I’ll give you a hint, it’s not ‘the best team in baseball.’

Still, would it kill these guys to win a game by more than two runs once in a while?

Mitre box sawed em down like a master carpenter. Wait til he finds Jesus next year. Thats when the miracles start. Good night.

That’s what a yankee hater thinks a yankee fan complains about. I love it! What a great season so far.
I actually kind of like that TB won tonight, because it’s just going to make Boston sweat a little more.

I would love it if the Yankees take the division and Tampa gets the wildcard. Leave Boston on the outside looking in.
I think it’s likely that Boston will trade for a bat.
Mitre missed a decent amount of bats and racked up some Ks tonight although I’m guessing that he’ll get fewer misses as the league sees him and footage of him gets around. His location looked good too and he only walked one batter tonight which is probably the more important thing. Lots to be happy and optimistic about tonight, the pitching has been phenomenal since the break.
I told everyone not to worry about tonight’s game. The Yanks are 5-0 in the games I have attended this season.

So should we all chip in and buy you season tickets?

You are, of course, working on getting tickets for all remaining home games and away games close enough to drive to, correct?
Bah, the only games IE needs to attend are against the Angels & the Sawks.

And getting a scramjet powered vehicle.
I saw a game against Anaheim this year and the Yanks won. Alas, I have no tickets to any Red Sox contests this season.
Girardi may be blowing smoke, but:
Hinske has not played at third base for the Yankees but Manager Joe Girardi said he was confident he could handle it if needed.
It could depend on what the definition of needed is.
would it kill these guys to win a game by more than two runs once in a while?
for some reason, once the Yanks went ahead (the first time) I was very confident they would win.
It could depend on what the definition of needed is.
can’t possibly be worse than seriously considering using Livan Hernandez as a corner infielder (it’s true!)
It could depend on what the definition of needed is.
might have to do with you know… the O’s
[9] Brilliant!
Except that Hinske has played third base for the Yankees, in the final two innings of the 10-2 win over the Twins on July 7. So we already have our definition of “needed.” We do not, however, have much indication of whetehr he could handle it, since he didn’t have any fielding chances in that game.
1st place > 2nd place
afternoon game on gameday > actual work
So we already have our definition of “needed.”
At most, we have a very limited definition given that he has only been a Yankee for 17 games.
I was surprised that Girardi even mentioned it as a possibility, given his -13.4 career UZR, although as I said, I’m skeptical that he considers it a viable option when the outcome of a game is seriously in doubt, except in an extreme emergency.

You are the bizzaro me. I’m 0-4 and they weren’t even close.
...but I thought the Dodgers were the best team in baseball!

This is OT, but here’s a link to an article that discusses the use and the ethics of DNA testing to determine the age and identity of Latin American baseball prospects:
...Last week the Yankees voided the signing of an amateur from the Dominican Republic after a DNA test conducted by Major League Baseball’s department of investigations showed that the player had misrepresented his identity.
I was unaware of the methodology that was used.
The only good thing this time is that Yankees don’t play the Red Sox or Angels immediately after tying or gaining a one game lead in the division. That would have surely resulted in a two-game back by the end of the next series.
That may still happen, but personally, I feel it is not out of the realm of possibility that Yankees win a game or two in the next three days.
Let’s not get all sploogy yet. Soon the Yankees have to go on the road to play Tampa and Chicago while the Sox have a homestand against Baltimore and Oakland.
I was unaware of the methodology that was used.
It looks like the DNA testing is being used to help verify birth certificates, or am I missing something?
Actually, after this homestand things in general stiffen up. On the road at Chicago, Tampa, Toronto, four vs. Boston, then a little respite with three against Toronto at home, then a west coast trip to play Seattle and Oakland (never easy) followed by three at Fenway Park.
...but I thought the Dodgers were the best team in baseball!

Evidently, ESPN has failed to work its magic on you.
Well, ESPN and living in Boston. Perhaps I am simply stubborn.
Actually I don’t know who I’d pick to win a Yankees-Dodgers series. Depends on where they played it and with what pitching rules?
They’ll play four games in Yankee Stadium with the DH and three in Dodger Stadium without the DH.
At most, we have a very limited definition given that he has only been a Yankee for 17 games.
Sarcasm detector still in the shop?

The fact that he continues to start Cody Freakin’ Ransom at 3B whenever A-Rod needs a day off tells us all we need to know about whether he considers it a viable option. Probably also says a little something about what he’d consider an extreme emergency. It sounds like Kepner asked Girardi if Ransom starting at third meant that he doesn’t think Hinske can handle third, and Girardi wisely chose not to take a totally unnecessary shot at Hinske’s defensive prowess or lack thereof.
Haven’t the Yankees faced a lefty every time they’ve sat Rodriguez? Maybe that is part of the reason that Hinske hasn’t gotten a shot at third?
Haven’t the Yankees faced a lefty every time they’ve sat Rodriguez?
But if you think of it as “Haven’t the Yankees chosen to rest Rodriguez only when facing lefties?” then the answer is still saying something about who Girardi would rather see handling 3B when A-Rod sits or DH’s.
Sarcasm detector still in the shop?
My bad.
The fact that he continues to start Cody Freakin’ Ransom at 3B whenever A-Rod needs a day off tells us all we need to know about whether he considers it a viable option.
OK, but otoh, since June 1st, Swisher has hit:
.238 .351 .413 .764
and Girardi keeps playing him over Hinske as well.
Maybe Joe thinks that Hinske is a lousy OFer too? Bet he won’t volunteer that info to Kepner either.
But if you think of it as “Haven’t the Yankees chosen to rest Rodriguez only when facing lefties?” then the answer is still saying something about who Girardi would rather see handling 3B when A-Rod sits or DH’s.
Good point, although I thought they had Rodriguez on a set rest schedule? Even if they did, I’d imagine they should have at least some flexibility.
