Yankees.com: Burnett’s gem all Yanks need in Queens

NEW YORK—A.J. Burnett took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and allowed just one hit in seven dominant frames, striking out a season-high 10 batters as the Yankees defeated the Mets, 5-0, on Saturday at Citi Field.

Jorge Posada hit a three-run homer to supplement Nick Swisher’s earlier solo shot, toppling starter Tim Redding as the Yankees defeated their crosstown rivals for the fourth time in five contests this season.

Beating the Mets is always enjoyable.  Burnett lowered his ERA on the season to 3.93 in this game, That happens to be the exact ERA of his average projection entering 2009.  His peripherals are still not quite as good as his ERA, but he’s been pretty good in June, throwing, 30 innings of 2.10 ERA, with 35 Ks, 16 BB, and 3 HRs. allowed.

Now we cross our fingers and hope the Wang comes up big tomorrow.

Wang comming up big.

I’m calling 7 IP, 2 ER for Wang tomorrow.

[1] There’s so much more that can be done with that - my slow brain can’t think of anything right now though.

With the Mets replacement level lineup, Wang should be fine if he can avoid the free passes.

Rolling Wave should be fined a pint or two for the twin m’s.

I cannot goof on the Mets. That roster is destroyed.
I give them credit just for showing up.
Nice to smack them about. I’m not willing to give a win back but damn, that cupboard is pretty effen bare.
Gonna watch the game now.

We did win, right?

You want to know before watching?

Well Pete, I have seen the top of the thread.
Maybe it’s like Fox News. It don’t really happen unless you want it to.

AJ was good, but then again we remember a game where Hawkins was good, don’t we?

Andy or La Troy? My memory is shot.
Lady cake stuff et al.

Andy’s no-hitter, I meant.  Trying to build up tension for you so it’s a good watch.

Hey Froggo. Sup lad?

If I had a dvr in the 80’s I would still be living in Ma’s basement.

Wow. AJ looks good. Nasty hook,3rd inning, and it’s the Mets.

The Mets lineup is pretty torn up.  But the Yankees were playing without Jeter for two games and Cervelli in for Posada on Friday.  The back end of that lineup wasn’t exactly murderer’s row.

Let’s all hope there is no let up against the 46 year old Livan Hernandez.

They need to get an early lead, which would enable Wang to relax and perhaps put doubts in the minds of the Mets about their ability to win the game.

With the exceptions of Wright, Sheffield and Church, every player in the lineup is of replacement level caliber.  If Wang doesn’t take care of business against them, he won’t hold many teams down.  The key is to pound the zone against Castillo and Cora, who basically go up there looking for walks anyway.

Doesn’t Castillo have a low walk rate?  I thought he was one of those guys who hacks away but doesn’t strike out much.

Get out the brooms night CMW?

Castillo’s line is: .278/.373/.330.  Nuff’ said.

Way back in the 20th century, Bill James wrote the first essential book about baseball managers. Chris Jaffe has just written the second.

From now on, whenever I have a question about a manager, Jaffe's book will be the first and last one I reach for.

John Brattain Memorial Fund

The Hardball Times has set up a memorial fund for John Brattain's family. He left behind a wife and two teenage daughters.

Four years ago, I found from personal experience how generous the online community can be to its own in their hour of need. I am now literally begging you to be even more generous than you were to me.
