Yankees.com: A-Rod puts Yanks’ win streak at seven
NEW YORK—Like Mark Teixeira before him, Alex Rodriguez has gone from puzzlingly cold to exceptionally hot in a flash. And with him have gone the Yankees. In such a funk as they slogged through the Interleague portion of their schedule, the Yankees won their last two games in Atlanta and have been soaring since.
They are now winning games—and quite a lot of them—with both efficiency and precision. The latest example came on Wednesday at Yankee Stadium, when Andy Pettitte thrived, Rodriguez hit a towering home run and the Yankees won their seventh straight game, this one a 4-2 decision over the Mariners.
I love me a winning streak.

What language is this translated from? Can’t the Yankees afford an English major intern?
God knows there are enough of them out there looking for a job, any job.
Is this site going to be totally devoted to the business writing side of the Yankees?
Baseball writers seem, generally, to know nearly nothing about baseball nor writing, making them more of __________________s.
Whether or not Alex provided Teixeira with any protection that contributed to his hot streak when he returned to the lineup from the DL, it’s <strike>hard</strike> impossible to argue that Alex’s resurgence has been the result of the protection he has received:
From 06/24-06/30:
Batting #4 .400/.600/.850
Batting #5 .231/.310/.308
I like this winning thing. Feels good. Let’s agree the Yankees should never lose again.
So… Jesus Montero has hit 4 HR over the last 3 games. and has now 3 more walks than whiffs in AA. and more extra base hit than whiffs also.
Ridiculas. I pray that he could at least catch at a Piazza level.

You mean put the catcher’s gear on, squat behind the plate, and roll the ball back to the pitcher? Yeah, he can probably do that.
Honestly, if Montero can work his way up to being a -10 at catcher, and hit like he’s projected to, he’ll be a perennial MVP candidate for a decade or more. Which is why the Yanks are keeping him at catcher as long as possible.

That is the eventual goal, yes. Without the business side, you can’t have anything else after all.

My guess is latin. the “in such a ____ as” looks familiar.
Fun with English/Latin/English translators:
Upon of such a kind a funk when they slogged very Interleague prodigy of its schedule Yankees won its to stay to the end two game
I remember the speculation during the slump regarding A-Rod’s contract.
May we please have speculation about the value of A-Rod’s contract if he keeps hitting like THIS? (That is, since the selective-end-point of the end of his slump, or since the rest, which may be a less selective end-point)?
Thanks.
If Buster Olney says A-Rod is through, he is through. Simple as that.
Just saw video of his homer last night…looks to me like that’d be in the black at OYS.
Hinske sighting tonight?

Historically, do hitters continue hitting like THIS through their late 30s?
Does Ted Williams count?
Well, Hank Aaron for example put up an OPS of 1.045 in his age 39 season - so historically, it is certainly possible.
Barry Bonds?
There have been plenty of good hitters that continued hitting well into their late 30s. However, there have been even more good hitters that fell off a cliff or declined thanks skill deterioration or physical deterioration. Let’s not start touting a 10 year contract to a 32 year old as a brilliant stroke just yet. Keep running the projections, sure, but my optimism is tempered by history.
Barry Bonds?
I think Barry Bonds is an exceptional case.
Barry Bonds? We have no idea how Barry Bonds would have hit in his 30s.
Hank Aaron did it the good old fashion way. ..... on Greenies and amphetemines.
Greenies ARE amphetamines, aren’t they?
According to MLBTR the Yankees signed catcher Gary Sanchez for $3 million. They’ll also be signing a SS and pitcher soon.
Greenies ARE amphetamines, aren’t they?
Yes, they are. But the important point to note here is that it has the same status as any other drug.
So, to draw a parallel to your point in [20], we don’t know how Hank Aaron would have hit in his 30s, or probably anytime in his career, if he had indeed taken greenies.
I’m sorry, I was the one who took the bait.
Are the Yankees privvy to some information that in order to speed up games, two pitchers and two catchers will be used at the same time?
Anyone actually seen Montero play? How is his D progressing?
I’ve been meaning to go see Montero. I only live a half hour from Trenton.
Bruney threw to Montero in Trenton during his rehab assignment and didn’t seem to have any problems - for what that’s worth.
What is Montero’s projected timeline? Obviously SSS in AA, but he seems to be moving up quickly. Is he a 2011 kind of guy?
Score one for the Babe.

According to BBRef, since joining Trenton Montero has caught 7 of 25 runners (28%) in 16 games and 3 passed balls. PB numbers are worse than with Tampa (3 in 42 games), CS% better (8 of 64, 13%). I don’t have a frame of reference handy for how often runners attempt to steal in each level of the minors, nor how his rates are. I also don’t know if being better than twice as good at catching runners in AA is a sign of improvent, or SSS. Regardless, given his age I don’t think he is a lost cause for C yet.

I’d have to think he won’t spend any time in AAA this year; at least not until playoff time if SWB is still playing and Trenton isn’t. But next year he’ll likely start in AAA, with Cervelli sharing time with Posada in NYC. 2011 seems reasonable, though he could play in 2010 depending on injuries and how he is doing. I don’t think they’ll promote him just to promote him though.
I should think that when Montero comes up depends in large part on his development. If his BB/K and XBH/K rates are >1 the rest of the way in AA, I’d think we’ll see him next year some time. AA-A > AAA-AA, right?
I don’t understand the glut of catching in the system. Isn’t the leverage of being able to say, “If you don’t give us your top 8th-inning reliever prospect X for Romine we’ll just start him” gone? Doesn’t the new guy suppress Romine’s value?

The new guy won’t even be playing in the United States until next year at the very earliest, maybe even 2011, and in Rookie Ball then. By that time, Romine will be in AA or AAA.
You can never have too much catching. The leverage comes from the fact that all the teams in baseball without a decent catcher (and there are many) will bid against each other - and that, of course, is if all these prospects, i.e. Higashioka, Sanchez etc., even reach their potential - which is doubtful.
I think you also have to consider that trading a catcher will most likely attract more than one bidder. So the leverage isn’t how much you value the catcher, it’s how much the other team is willing to bid for him.
Lost by 8 seconds.
Montero’s bat is super advanced. I wouldn’t be surprised if he did OK in the majors now, (well maybe a little). But the Yankees will keep him in the minors for as long as they can to work on his backstopping.

Well that, and I think they will be cautious about rushing him. And you’d have to consider too what everyone else is doing. I think Montero 2010 will be like Derek Jeter 1995 (or Austin Jackson 2009 for that matter); they’ll try to get him the full year in AAA, with plans on him playing regularly in 2011. If there is a need in 2010 and he deserves a callup he’ll get it.
I’m ignorant about economics but normally the market would have an extra participant, here the Yankees, which should be worth something, and also the good in question spoils, which means there’s an incentive to sell lower.
Huh, somebody stole my car. What’s the market for a 20-year-old Toyota?
Huh, somebody stole my car. What’s the market for a 20-year-old Toyota?
Really? If so I’m sorry; if there is a metaphor I’m missing it.
Our 18-year-old Honda got stolen a couple years ago. The police found it a few days later abandoned in Richmond. Got used for drug running or something. Tons o’ fun.
One scout had Montero the best Yankee’s best htting prospect since Jeter. When my 12yo Mustang was stolen in NYC I was getting parking tickets for weeks. Pissed me off that the computer that registered stolen cars couldn’t communicate with the computer that registered parking tickets. It wouldn’t have taken Columbo to retrieve my car.
12yo Mustang, was that when the Mustang was eh, or when the revitalized the brand and style?
If it was after the redesign, dang, I old.
What’s the market for a 20-year-old Toyota?
Parts?
The police won’t take a statement over the phone. You can of course leave work and drive over to the station.
That’s illogical how can you drive to the station if your car was stolen? Physicists may know about Higgs boson particles but common sense eludes them.
Oh, paradox, that’s an old friend in the lab.
That’s frustrating.
I received a slip in the mailbox from the Postal Service informing me they could not deliver a package because I wasn’t home, even though I was and never heard the doorbell. So I go down there with the slip and they tell me the package is out being delivered.
Does this qualify as a paradox?
That’s a catch-22, or a runaround. Unless the package contains an identical quantum copy of you, in which case it’s Pauli exclusion.
