Yankees.com: Big night for the Bombers’ bats

BALTIMORE—Friday’s game summary reads like a laundry list of accomplishments: nine runs, two sets of back-to-back home runs, a five-hit night for Bobby Abreu, Derek Jeter’s 2,500th career hit and a 9-4 victory over the Orioles.

The Bombers’ bats were a little too late to get Moose his 18th win.
Now for the delicate Carl Pavano tomorrow.  Vegas could establish a line for whether or not he injures himself.  Again.

Yankee fans are the ref.

Not quite as funny after a win, which is a good thing I guess.

Bolt>>more impressive then Phelps

I was just thinking that bebop.  Bolt is definitely more impressive than Phelps.  Phelps is killing world records, but everyone is killing world records in the pool.  Bolt is killing world records.  Longstanding world records.

Also, 37.10 in 4x1?  Just wow.

By the way - the banner ads for this site are working.  I’m totally pulling my hangover off of my couch with me, and driving thru at McDonalds to get a tasty southern-style chicken sandwich.

Josh did you see the chart in the NY Times which showed that since Michael Johnson ran 19.32 in 1996 only he and Bolt who ran 19.30 have run under 19.60 in the past 12 years.  That’s statistically unbelievable(unless he’s a juicer) without the aid of special suits or deeper swimming pools. He not only broke a 12 year old record but he blew away every single 200 meter race in the intervening time.

The 200 times take long years to be surpassed, it has been a succession of *longstanding* records. That Bolt broke it was not a surprise to me, after watching him run the 100 and then the 200 heats. At least he ran through the tape on the 200, unlike his act in the 100.

Phelps says - Hi!

I was catching a bit of the Sox game on the radio earlier while driving.  Castiglione commented on the strikeout of Youkilis looking in the first - how it was a close pitch.  The other guy in the booth said “If Lester gets that call, the Blue Jays could be in trouble.  He could throw a one-hitter!” (this was without Lester having thrown a pitch yet in the game).

Toronto is now winning 6-0.

So, either Lester hasn’t been getting that call over and over again or the Red Sox booth is more biased and annoying than I thought.

Its nice to see Lester get banged around, too bad it doesn’t matter in the scheme of things this year.  Hughes was horrid yesterday I gather though one site said many of the hits were not hit particularly hard.

The problem with Hughes right now is command and the number of pitches he throws in short order. If last season was a wasted one for Hughes, what would you call 2008?

Meanwhile, Zach McAllister progresses nicely. Shhhhhhhh!

What do you mean by “in short order”?

As in he’s really cooking?

Do you think the Jays’ pitchers are telling the hitters “Why couldn’t you have spread out these runs a little when we were losing CGs giving up 2 runs?”

Seriously, what’s gotten into the Jays lately??

I hope everyone at Camden Yards is prepared for the plague of locusts that’s going to descend around 7:30pm.

Despite the terrible occurrences this year, I may look back on this start as the most unexpected moment of the season.

Who else had blocked out the fact that Pavano was the opening day starter last year?  I sure did for a long while.

Did Pavano miss a couple of starts?  I didn’t know.

I still can’t believe he’s actually going to pitch tonight.

Meanwhile, poor Javy Vazquez goes 5.2 perfect innings against the Rays and ends up the loser.  Ouch.

Guthrie leads league in “quality” starts.  This augurs poorly.  Not that it matters any more this season but we haven’t had much success against any pitchers with a pulse.

Wonder if we’ll exceed 300 post tonight?  As Tug said “you gotta believe.”

Damn, that was close.

If The English Patient/American Idle can hold the Os under two for 7 2/3 we should be in good shape tonight

I’m getting goosebumps.  This is how the crowd must have felt before the opening bell in Ali Frazier 3.

Instant poll.  Should YM watch:
a) Giants kick the Jets’ tails; or
b) Rajah of Rehab throw a perfect game?

Exhibition football is the pits.  This or Olympics.

Well, there goes the perfect game.

Pavano…an auspicious start.

there goes the no-hitter…

I’m surprised he didn’t get hurt reaching for the ball

Hey, no runs!

Happy…......not really…...Yappy

if pavano pitches on a saturday night, does it make a sound?  where’s the game thread?

This is going swimmingly.

Behold.  The power of ‘Stache.

Kay just called Huff, Mora.  They don’t even look alike nor swing from the same side of the plate.

So, if the Yankees win today and tomorrow, and Boston loses again, will we be suckered back into believing?

So, if the Yankees win today and tomorrow, and Boston loses again, will we be suckered back into believing?

You stopped believing?  Shame on you.

I really really really hope the good AJ shows up against the Sox tomorrow, and somehow Matsuzaka doesn’t figure out how to strand all 587 runners he puts on in a game.

Honestly, I did. Not so much the number of games behind, but the absolute colapse of the pitching due to injury. I am weary of a miracle run with only Pettitte and Moose as trustworthy starters.

Matsui has kinda sucked since he’s come back, hasn’t he.

he didn’t have a minor league rehab, so I imagine he hasn’t seen much pitching yet. He’ll come around.

Matsui has kinda sucked since he’s come back, hasn’t he.

He fits right in.

Didn’t Matsui play a few MiL games in GCL?

maybe? I said that off-the-cuff so I could be wrong. I’ll actually check this time.

you’re right. 3 of em, 2 in the same day. I guess my new point is, he hasn’t faced Major League pitching until recently, it’ll take a while to get used to it again. maybe.

Is it time to declare the Carl Pavano era a rousing success yet?

Do you let Pavano face Millar to start the 6th, or do you take your 5 IP, 3 R Jarret Wright special and call it a day for him?

He was at 91 pitches after 5 IP.  I count my blessings and tell him to hit the showers.

I would take lots o’ runs right here.  Hell, I’d take one or two.

Wow, the Yankee hitters have totally rolled over after the Giambi HR.  They are so going to lose this one 5-4.

Are these umpires even watching the game?  How do you call him safe?  The throw beat him, the tag was on.

OK, lots o’ runs begin…now.

see what badmouthing Matsui gets you?

Matsui has kinda sucked since he’s come back, hasn’t he.

Pudge has kinda sucked since he came on board, hasn’t he.

Damon has kinda sucked, hasn’t he.

Wow, the Yankee hitters have totally rolled over after the Giambi HR.  They are so going to lose this one 5-4.

Weren’t you bemoaning my lack of faith?

Jeter has kinda sucked, hasn’t he.

Abreu has kinda sucked, hasn’t he.

Great job by Bruney. Is our bullpen getting over the disturbing loss of Krazy Kyle? Or the more disturbing sight of his weepy goodbye?

did john sterling just say that bruney won’t get a hold for preserving the yankees lead? It may be a bullshit stat, but isn’t that exactly what relievers in the middle innings get when preserving leads? Don’t these people watch baseball for a living?

also, “we’re not out of it”

Wow that was a strike.

Yay, Veras.

Why did this half-inning feel like it’d lasted about 2 hours?

Will anyone watch the volleyball final later tonight? So far US has a 2 to one advantage in golds against Brazil, and it feels like the 2 countries have been dominating the sport for quite some time.

Great at bat by Cano.

Too bad Pudge sucked since he came to the Yankees.

Yes…yes, he has.

Yay, Mo!  Yay, win!

...Damn teases are at it again.

hey, we won!

Mo is teh awesome.

Pavano is our savior!!!

By Pete Abraham:

Pavano has won his last 2 starts.

Hi. My name is Michael Corleone. Or Lawrence Peter Berra.
Guess they count still.

Soon after the worst loss of the season, the most improbable win.

Gotta love baseball.

Pavano gets a win and Moose doesn’t.  There is no justice.

Soon after the worst loss of the season, the most improbable win.

The most improbable win?

Pavano is certainly fragile, but talent-wise he is by far not the worst pitcher they have run out there this year.

Sometimes the lines get blurred. Scott Ericksson in 2006 was a joke because you knew he was going to get bombed. Pavano is a joke because he missed significant time due to a bruised buttocks and a ___ and a ___, etc, etc. But he’s fine as a starter considering what options we have.

Improbable that he was able to get healthy in time to contribute to this season.

Way back in the 20th century, Bill James wrote the first essential book about baseball managers. Chris Jaffe has just written the second.

From now on, whenever I have a question about a manager, Jaffe's book will be the first and last one I reach for.

John Brattain Memorial Fund

The Hardball Times has set up a memorial fund for John Brattain's family. He left behind a wife and two teenage daughters.

Four years ago, I found from personal experience how generous the online community can be to its own in their hour of need. I am now literally begging you to be even more generous than you were to me.
