YANKEES WIN THE 2009 WORLD SERIES!!!

Once Alex Rodriguez returned from his hip surgery, the Yankees were the best team in baseball.  The best team doesn’t always make it to the promised land, but they did this year. Apparently having swagger and not being intimidated was less important than being the better team.

Andy Pettitte pitched ok, not great, but better than the ‘start Chad Gaudin because Pettitte is too old to throw on three days rest’ crowd probably thought he would.  Pettitte ended up pitching the clinching game in all three postseason series, even though that’s more of a timing thing than a skill.

If this was Hideki Matsui’s last game in pinstripes, he picked a hell of a way to go out.  Godzilla plated the first two runs of the game in the bottom of the second with a two-run HR off Pedro Martinez, and the Yankees led the rest of the way.  Matsui then singled in the third and fourth runs in the third, and the Yankees had more runs than the Phillies would get for the rest of the night.

It’s amazing how Damaso Marte’s contract looks so much better now than it did a week ago.

And like he’s done so many times before, Mariano Rivera closed out the opposition in the postseason.  Rivera, Pettitte, Derek Jeter and Jorge Posada get their “one for the thumb.”

Nine years between championships is not nearly as long as it probably felt like to us, as I’m sure fans of most other teams would attest.  But this sure feels good anyway.

We bid a fond farewell to the Curse of Clay Bellinger as well.

So in one postseason, we saw the end of the Yankees’s supposed inability to beat the Angels, we saw that the idea that CC Sabathia was not capable of pitching in the postseason was psychobabble BS, and most importantly of all, we saw that the people who though Alex Rodriguez couldn’t perform in the clutch because of some sort of mental defect were completely and utterly wrong.

One small request, can we please not use this thread to talk about what the Yankees should do next year?  Maybe we can just enjoy tonight?  Who knows when they’ll be back here again?

There’ll be plenty of time to play GM going forward.

When does the series against the Red Sox start?

Hank on ESPNNews asked about A-Rod:

Yeah, how ‘bout him.  I guess Im not such an idiot any more.  (or words to that effect)

Yay win. Yay everyone.

[201] So. Many. Aces.

I hope you let him stay up MC.

Game seven in 2001 was the first time he stayed up for a whole post-season game.  I couldn’t curse or throw shit around or anything, because I had to pick him up and carry him up to bed whispering in his ear that it was alright as soon as it ended.  After the last out tonight, his mom says, “It’s a good thing they won this time, ‘cause I don’t think dad can carry you up those stairs any more.”

I guess us old farts have experienced a few more of these than some of you whipersnappers, but winning never gets old, and this one is a little extra special for me because I’m already looking forward to telling his kids about it.

Anybody who implies that Alex Rodriguez is unclutch deserves to be scoffed to death.

OK, last one…

Great year, great site!

The last time the Yanks won the WS, I had just split with my wife and was living in a basement apartment in Weehawken.

I’ve had an entire relationship start and end since the last time the Yanks won the Series—I moved in with my ex-girlfriend/fiancée in April 2001 and we split up in April of this year. All my Star Trek novels (14 in all) were published between the Yanks’ two championships.

Plus, of course, there was a Democrat in the White House, which helped immensely:

2009—Obama—Democrat—won
2003—Bush—Republican—lost
2001—Bush—Republican—lost
2000—Clinton—Democrat—won
1999—Clinton—Democrat—won
1998—Clinton—Democrat—won
1996—Clinton—Democrat—won
1981—Reagan—Republican—lost
1978—Carter—Democrat—won
1977—Carter—Democrat—won
1976—Ford—Republican—lost

I moved in with my ex-girlfriend/fiancée in April 2001 and we split up in April of this year.

I don’t know how the relationship was for you, but it was terrible hoodoo for the Yankees and I’m glad it’s over.

Yay Coke. You sucked, but good for you.

Awesome shot of Melky dousing Cash with champagne.

Also, let’s go visit gohalos.com sometime and see if they are still optimistic about beating CC.

Also, let’s go visit gohalos.com sometime and see if they are still optimistic about beating CC.

And Rollins figuring things out.

[208] You’re probably right, yeah. Breaking up was good for a lot of reasons, but tonight, I think the icky Yankee mojo is the best reason. :D

Keith, aren’t you thew one with the new gf who’s a Phillies fan?  She asleep right now?

I like CC’s kid. He seems like he despises the strange dudes around him: Berman, Gammo and Winfield.

Mad props to Girardi, for getting an incredible % of outs from his 4 best pitchers, for realizing what he had in Marte, and mostly, for managing the best damn team we’ve seen in years.

[214] Yes, the new GF is a Phillies fan. She was gracious in defeat. Her exact words were, “At least you’re not a Mets fan….......”

Champions.

[216] Yeah, Girardi has some flaws as a manager, and they were frustrating at times this postseason, but on the whole, he’s about as progressive as you can reasonably hope for in a manager, and his strengths outweigh his flaws.

Ok, I am going to go to bed. Later, folks!

Was on the phone with my dad.  Then on the phone with friends all over the country.
What a great night.  I’m half drunk right now.  But I am sincere when I say a I love you all.  What a night.  What a season.  LEt us all bathe in the glory.

What an farnsing amazing team.

[205] Great that you could enjoy it with him.  I remember jumping on the bed with my dad after Chambliss’ ‘76 blast and being with him at Shea 24 years later to see them win it all in person.

For some reason I threw nothing and swore very little after 2001 G7.  I sat in front of the bedroom in utter shock and disbelief.  Nerves were still a little raw post 9/11.

All in all, this is a lot better.

It’s nice to root for a team with which you can measure your life out by pennants and championships.

Woohoo! Happy Championship to all! Love those updated odds, SG! Thanks for clearing that one up!

Let’s go, Yankees!

Kruk and Valentine with some classy congratulations for the Yanks on BBTN.  I like that.  Goonight, folks.  What a good night, indeed.  Hot stove, coming up!

[221] Free the mice!

Would it be gay to say I love Mariano’s smile?

Just saw Mo on ESPN w/ Berman, Winfield, Gammons, etc… whereas most athletes just sort of barely tolerate interviews (and understandably so), Mo seemed genuinely happy to be doing it, patting Winfield on the back, hugging Berman, smiling the whole time.

I’m so happy for Hideki. 7 years as a great Yankee, and whether he leaves or not, he’s had this coming. Congrats, Gojira.

Mo confessing to pitching with a good deal of pain in his side.

‘night to all you beautiful people—(cue goofy A-Rod voice)—I’m gonna go party!!

yeah, Mo leaning one arm on Winfield’s shoulder and talking, that was great..

Pretty sure Alex glances at Kate right before jumping in the pile. How cute!

Great way to christen the new ballpark.  Thanks SG and everyone here.  A really fun year.

[221] Free the mice!

Indeed.

Pretty sure Alex glances at Kate right before jumping in the pile. How cute!

Well, time for a Kate Hudson marathon.  ‘How to Lose a Guy in 10 days’ or ‘Raising Helen’ first?

Kate Hudson should have won the MVP!

Pretty sure Alex is gonna leave Kate behind and spend the rest of the night jumping on other piles.

Did Kate and Minka make up yet?

Oh crap, Minka was Autumn from 500 Days Summer?

Yay Moose! Yay Mattingly!

According to Laura Posada, all the drama between the WAGs has been manufactured.

Definitely “Raising Helen.” Save “Almost Famous” for last.

It was kind of annoying seeing Minka’s name in the credits, since it sort of gave away how she would be used in the movie (trying to be vague as to avoid spoiling the film).

Yay Charlie Hayes.

Did you guys hear - the Yankees are WORLD FUCKING CHAMPS!

Love this team, site, and all you basement dwellers!

I will be posting in every thread possible this offseason, and every thread at gohalos and halosheaven, the phrase “WORLD FUCKING CHAMPS!” (I will clean it up for the return of the swear poll which I assume is tomorrow)

[244] now you made me look like a jerk.  =(

You live in Astoria, Brian? Great neighborhood.

Clutch Alex! GG Teix! Big Ace CC! Celebrate!

[240] Indeed—they should put her on the payroll next year.

And Howard and Rollins as runners-up.  Howard for his juicy platoon splits (and for setting the K record that Fox neglected to mention), and Rollins for his unwarranted hubris.  As it says in the Bible, Genesis 38: 8-9: He of the sub-.300 OBP shall not cast the first stone, lest he incur the wrath of the mighty Mo.  Or something like that.

Oh crap, Minka was Autumn from 500 Days Summer?

Damn, haven’t seen it but mr. moviefone says itz a winner.

BC, don’t spill any more spoilers.  I’m looking forward to that flick now.

Did I mention that I love yiz all?

now you made me look like a jerk.  =(

Ha!

Nah, your comment was definitely vague enough.

You live in Astoria, Brian? Great neighborhood.

Yeah, right on Broadway near the N/W train. It definitely is a nice neighborhood.

Rollins for his unwarranted hubris.

Yeah, the Yankees ain’t no Mutts.

500 Days is mindless but harmless. The best part is watching Zooey. But I guess I’m more of the foreign art movie snob type.

Yeah, right on Broadway near the N/W train. It definitely is a nice neighborhood.

I can’t wait for AMMI to finish it’s renovation. But it’s also a good hangout and dining destination otherwise.

Centaurs are my new favorite mythical beasts. Unicorns, dragons, and mermaids can go fuck themselves.

Also, I request the following people suck it: Joe Buck, John Henry, Jimmy Rollins, John Kruk, Mike Scscscscoscscscia, almost everyone at espNESN, and anyone ARod has dated that wasn’t in You, Me, & Dupree.

its not it’s.

A Parade is a nice way to finish a season.

Such a night.  Such a night.  I think my favorite part was watching A-Rod cry during his interview.  Or maybe it was being asked to leave the it lab for screaming, “FUCK YEAH! YANKEES WIN!” at the top of my lungs.  I don’t know.  It has been a truly wonderful season, though.

Mo is the stuff dreams are made of.

A great, great Yankee season.

DirectTV, Black Jack Taco, Evony, Black Eyed Peas, day of shooting pool, pie, Howie Long, football promos, George Lopez, and 27!

I think my favorite part was watching A-Rod cry during his interview.

That happened?

wave goodbye, jimmy!

DirectTV, Black Jack Taco, Evony, Black Eyed Peas, day of shooting pool, pie, Howie Long, football promos, George Lopez, and 27!

lol. sadly this pretty much sums up 50% of my post season experience.

Wait, no, my favorite part was seeing my favorite Yankee literally go Godzilla on Philly’s ass.  That was truly glorious.

He cried on the field while Swisher was hugging him.

Hey guys, what do you think about doing this same thing again next year, complete with a repeat title and more evony ads?

He also cried when one of those ESPN douchebags was asking him how much it meant to him.
I think I’m free next year, yeah, let’s go ahead and pencil that in.
By the way, did anyone catch what brand of champagne the Yankees were celebrating with?

He cried on the field while Swisher was hugging him.

Taste the happy.

One complaint, I know Girardi thanked the fans and all, but I kinda wish he gave a shout out to the bloggers. Oh wellz.

Alex’s hip healing, hurray.

Watching Alex on the YES post game interview, he can quite close to saying something stupid, in regards to how the late 1990’s made it look easy, but he caught himself and reverted to being thankful or something.

Great season everyone, I guess I should sleep soon or something.

It would have been great if A-Rod would have said, “And I couldn’t have done it without performance enhancing drugs!”

Wouldn’t that have been one of the most hilarious World Series moments ever?

I tried my best to get drunk in celebration, but only had left over wine and a couple of Sam Adams in my fridge.

Pizza, beer, apologies, swear poll, looming, D&D, whiskies, complaints, fire Girardi, 4th starter Gaudin, pie charts, figure skating, centaurs, who should pitch teh ate, and other thread topics, yay season, yay yankees, yay all.

Also, remind me next time I have a mystery to solve to not turn to the Jimmy Rollins Detective Agency, or the Jimmy Rollins Crystal Ball Shop.

Huh, that seemed funny to me, maybe I am buzzed.

V, I “LOLed” at that Rollins line.  Serial.

Someone you know die? Call the Jimmy Rollins Mortuary. The Phillies did.

Taste the happy indeed, Vill!

Brian, your ARod idea was awesome.

SG and Jonathon and other lightning bolts, thanks for this place and the effort put forth to make it centaurific.

I think I was wrong when I started calling Matsui - “Matsui’s corpse” back in June. Whoever started calling him a zombie - thanks for the endless entertain it provided.

*entertainment

Yay!

I can’t believe Manuel let Pedro pitch to Matsui (in the… 4th?) after he’d already hit the HR.  It’s not just the HR.  That whole AB, after falling behind 0-2, Pedro had nothing to put him away with.  Rocket foul, ball, rocket foul, ball, etc, HR.  Same thing in the second AB, except a mere single.  Leaving him in to face him with the bases loaded was mini-Little.  Thanks, Charlie!!  I loved the Foxfools talking about how Hideki could hit for the cycle if he tripled.  Dude has no knees.  If he doesn’t triple on the ball he hit off the wall (and got past both Victorino and Werth on the rebound), he does not triple ever, basically.  Hah.

Way to go BattleCat!  Hell, the HR to Howard wasn’t even a bad pitch.  Andy was very good, IMO.  Better than his line in the box score.  Not bad for an old man, eh?

Marte!  Talk about coming back from the dead in the course of a couple of weeks.  Sweet.

Mo, of course, in the end to make sure.  And he did.

I’m happy.  I’m also tired.  Surviving three rounds… yeesh.  Now I can sleep.

Way to go BattleCat!  Hell, the HR to Howard wasn’t even a bad pitch.  Andy was very good, IMO.  Better than his line in the box score.  Not bad for an old man, eh?

When Howard hit the ball, I was sure it was a long out.  That ball really carried.  Also, IMHO, I think some of the walks were on Joe West.  There were definitely pitches Pedro was getting that Andy wasn’t.

Marte!  Talk about coming back from the dead in the course of a couple of weeks.  Sweet.

I think the last few weeks we finally saw Marte healthy.  Last year he hurt himself when Girardi asked him to throw too many pitches, and of course this year the shoulder problems.  I think if he’s healthy next year, along with Robertson, Yankees will have the best 1-2, lefty-right punch out of the bullpen since Stanton-Nelson were at their peak.

I can’t believe Manuel let Pedro pitch to Matsui (in the… 4th?) after he’d already hit the HR.

In a way, that’s on West, too.  Strike three to Rodriguez was well outside.  If Martinez doesn’t get that call and A-Rod goes on to do just about anything other than GIDP, Pedro’s out of the game.

Am a superstitious type, so haven’t posted in a while - is it safe yet? Did we win or something? Can I still taste the scotch? You betcha!

Windmill reached. White whale harpooned. Suck it, Clay Bellinger!

Been fun reading SG & Jonathon’s posts all year, and all the incredible commentary. Thnx.

[155]
Seconded.

Bellinger got a bum rap.  It was really the curse of my kid’s birthday.  They just needed another WS game on November 4 to exorcise that ghost.

[208]
Hysterically hilarious

Hope you fellas enjoyed this one as much as I did.  Hard to believe it’s been so long since their last title.  I’ve been coming here on and off for a couple of years, enjoying the banter and learning a little about sabremetrics.  And now can enjoy relishing in a world championship.

It’s just too bad the media’s making the Yanks share the title with the Red Sox.

John Brattain Memorial Fund

The Hardball Times has set up a memorial fund for John Brattain's family. He left behind a wife and two teenage daughters.

Four years ago, I found from personal experience how generous the online community can be to its own in their hour of need. I am now literally begging you to be even more generous than you were to me.
