YANKEES WIN THE 2009 WORLD SERIES!!!

Once Alex Rodriguez returned from his hip surgery, the Yankees were the best team in baseball.  The best team doesn’t always make it to the promised land, but they did this year. Apparently having swagger and not being intimidated was less important than being the better team.

Andy Pettitte pitched ok, not great, but better than the ‘start Chad Gaudin because Pettitte is too old to throw on three days rest’ crowd probably thought he would.  Pettitte ended up pitching the clinching game in all three postseason series, even though that’s more of a timing thing than a skill.

If this was Hideki Matsui’s last game in pinstripes, he picked a hell of a way to go out.  Godzilla plated the first two runs of the game in the bottom of the second with a two-run HR off Pedro Martinez, and the Yankees led the rest of the way.  Matsui then singled in the third and fourth runs in the third, and the Yankees had more runs than the Phillies would get for the rest of the night.

It’s amazing how Damaso Marte’s contract looks so much better now than it did a week ago.

And like he’s done so many times before, Mariano Rivera closed out the opposition in the postseason.  Rivera, Pettitte, Derek Jeter and Jorge Posada get their “one for the thumb.”

Nine years between championships is not nearly as long as it probably felt like to us, as I’m sure fans of most other teams would attest.  But this sure feels good anyway.

We bid a fond farewell to the Curse of Clay Bellinger as well.

So in one postseason, we saw the end of the Yankees’s supposed inability to beat the Angels, we saw that the idea that CC Sabathia was not capable of pitching in the postseason was psychobabble BS, and most importantly of all, we saw that the people who though Alex Rodriguez couldn’t perform in the clutch because of some sort of mental defect were completely and utterly wrong.

One small request, can we please not use this thread to talk about what the Yankees should do next year?  Maybe we can just enjoy tonight?  Who knows when they’ll be back here again?

There’ll be plenty of time to play GM going forward.

Jeter: “We heard a few predictions about this series before it started, but we just went out and played the right way.”

[97] “We heard a lot of predictions…”

Buck now fellating Charlie Manuel for being “a man’s man”.

Sweet Mammy Pajammy !

Can’t this be our dance?

Trust WJ’s version.

hells yea

[61] Yeah, Pete, the low 100’s tend to be a bit looser than down where I am.

Awesome game, awesome comments, good night- I’ll be grinning in Boston.

Fabians back! what’s up!!!!

thank god! we won this one!!! 27!!!

So, does Binder get a ring? I say so.

I too remembered what happened 8 years ago today (now yesterday), but I didn’t want to bring it up.

Hey, we’re currently at 211 visitors…

Definitely my most enjoyable season and WS title since ‘96.

[104] Good things come in threes.

I usually hate postgame interviews, but I’m just eating them up right now. Haven’t done this since (surprise!) 2000.

I’m watching YES’s postgame, though, as I can actually stand their people, as opposed to FOX’s talking heads, who need to be beaten with croquet mallets.

  banana_smiley_28.gif

[107] Wow, that’s quite the dancing banana! cracking me up!

What a feeling, what a feeling.

This is the first title since I’ve been in high school.

I am now married with a son (6 weeks).

Not being from NY, this is the first title since I’ve been able to watch or really even follow the team regularly before the postseason.

This community is a huge part of that - some of you I’ve talked to for along time, most of you I haven’t.

Regardless, tonight I celebrate World Series #27, and lift my glass to everyone here at RLYW!

Here, here!

So, does Binder get a ring? I say so.

It already has three.

Hay friggin Zeus. I may be the happiest man in the land.
Ya’ll the best. Mr. Buck. please insert stuff into your anus.

Thanks for a terrific season, New York Yankees. And thanks a lot, SG, for your tireless work providing incredible analysis day in and day out. And Jonathan, obviously, to pick up the slack when SG couldn’t. If you are doing Boston games next year, I promise to catch a game with you, if I am still around in Boston, recession and all.

I hope Larry finds enough time to blog on a regular basis. Hopefully this is all he needs.

And all my fellow peanut gallery folks and other lightning bolts, thanks for some of the most hilarious, witty and incredibly intelligent stuff that you bring day in and day out. Thurm’s Katt is one of the best creatures ever conceived, and PS, rLr, yup and others, you guys are all a riot!

A fun-filled off-season awaits. Hopefully, Yankees, flushed with cash, decides to reduce ticket prices next year out of charity, but the rising economy and Yankee success will probably mean slightly higher prices.

Anyway, I am happy tonight. Real, real happy. And once again, thank you all.

Why is anyone other than Matsui a candidate for the Player of the Game? I mean, DUH!

Is this the complaint thread?

That picture of Marte basically doing the “suck it” is going to be my new background I think.

Don-Thank you, kind sir.

Best complaint thread ever. Have I mentioned the love I have for you lads?
A lot.

SG, collective community, you rock.  Thank you for giving a lost, homesick New Yorker a place to kvetch and feel at home.

I hope this leaves an impression on Hank and he does all he can to keep it going.

When are we heading to otf’s place for the bbq?

Seth Everett on MLB radio from the clubhouse:

“We don’t have to bleep that, that’s not English…I’ll have to get back to you in a minute.”

Damaso Marte was fucking nails.

An-dy Pett-itte.

Thurm, the feeling is mutual.

Who would have thought that MARTE would replace Hughes as the 2nd most reliable reliever? That guy deserves an extra slice of victory cake. Striking out Utley and Howard. One of the many things I’ll remember about this magical season.

East River! East River! East River!

Thank you A-Rod stat padding
Thank you El Captain
Thank you Posado
Thank you Battle Cat
Thank you Mo
Thank you bullpen
Thank you Pie-in-the-face
Thank you the Ace
Thank you kneeless, zombie Godzilla
Thank you Ninja Cano
Thank you D’ at 1st
Thank you Chessmaster
Thank you to the kids and the old men
And thank you for making this the best season ever!
.

Gammo being surprisingly ebullient in his praise.

lo9ve ya guys!! thanks SG, THANKS

Gene Michael on NY1.

Has there been a Cashman sighting yet?

Yes, thanks SG. Thanks especially for making the Yankees fun to follow even when things were going to shit the past few years. Always fun to come on here and make fun of Randy Johnson and Miguel Cairo.

KNEES!!!!!!!!!!

I´ll join the lovefest and say it was a real pleasure to be here for all these seasons. Lots of great folks. Love them all.

This is the first title for me, I became a fan after the Aaron Boone game. Happy as one could be. Just regret that there is no signal of celebration around here.

I have to teach in about 4 hours, so I´ll try and catch some sleep now.

[100] Happy birthday to your kid MC.  So do they eventually know to brush their teeth without being reminded?

I was at Shea for 2000 Game 5.  My daughter wasn’t even crawling yet.  Now she wants an iTouch.

THURM ((jump n hug))((jump n hug))

BASEMENTS!!!!!!!!

marte eats souls!!! mariano eats souls!!!

I was just a kid the last time this happened. Batting average was my favorite stat.

Perfect somehow that Girardi has a wife that’s cute and perky but not hot.

POST GAME INTERVIEWS!!!!!

Sorry for the all caps, just can’t help.

All you folks, group portrait as centaurs!

Perfect somehow that Girardi has a wife that’s cute and perky but not hot.

That’s her to his left? She looks pretty good.

Go wives!

Where can I go for bubbly bath coverage? ESPN is just Winfield and Berman blathering. I WANT TO SEE CHAMPAGNE

[147] Last championship I really DID live in my mom’s basement!

All you folks, group portrait as centaurs!

Best.  Idea.  Ever.

Someone should do a stick drawing and sticker it behind Matsui.

Did anyone see the bombshell with Gardner?

Gammo’s body language is worth millions. You can almost hear the muttering. It would really suck to be his dog, tonight.

Can we pretty please send a truck with a crew to Steve Philips’ house for an interview ?

Yo Frog!

What do you all mean AS centaur?  IamCentaur!

I just spent the day in Philly on a job interview, but got back to neutral ground in time to watch the game on DVR.  The replay of everyones’ reaction to the final out really was special, especially Girardi’s.  He looked stoic pretty much the whole game, he’s not a terribly expressive guy, and then all of a sudden, he became human.

Thank you to everyone here for providing such a great place to waste entirely too much time.  And thank you to SG for always answering questions and presenting interesting analysis.

Matsui has a nice baritone-y voice.

AJ was a good signing, he’s kinda loss in the moment.

Favorite moment of the season before tonight?

I have to go with the A-Rod homer off Nathan. Pure insanity

[151] absolutely no apologizing for the caps villain. so appropriate. we just won the WS!!!!!!!!

The Centaur summited and all it took was MacReady’s daughter. Kate’s va-gene gets my vote for 2009 postseason MVP!

Gardner with his wife:

6nIBC72H.jpg

arods series versus the twins was my favorite part.

So, was it just my imagination, or did most of the guys running out of the dugout head for ARod and not Jeter?  It seemed like Jeter was running to a spot, and then had to change direction to meet the pack.

CC’s kid definitely looks like he could give us 7 solid innings on 3 days rest.

dam- he does resemble kazoo.

cc’s kid is awesome!

CC Jr. looks kinda bored.

CC needs to get a pie in the face in a postgame interview.

He had three big starts in this postseason.

BTW- We just won the WS. No shit.

[168] DaPuj, I noticed the same thing.

Canyon of Heroes looms. I love you all.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

That’s Gardner’s wife? WTF. he’s a bald scrub

So do they eventually know to brush their teeth without being reminded?

Not yet.

True story from when he was maybe five or six.  Don’t remember what we were out doing, but he needed to use a public rest room.  So I find one and take him inside and he pees and makes a beeline for the exit.  “Aren’t you forgetting something?”  Then as soon as he finishes washing his hands, he’s announces that now he’s got to do #2.  A few minutes later he emerges from the stall and bolts for the exit again.  “Aren’t you forgetting something?”

“You mean every time?”

Anyway, the only downside for me tonight is that now he’s going to want me to shell out for a couple hundred bucks worth of commemorative crap.  But I’ll deal.

CC’s kid is pretty damned cute, too.

Coming back from 0-8. Those were some fun games. AJ’s gem.

Hmmm…A-Rod’s homer off of Nathan or his homer off of Fuentes.

One of those two.

The first one was more shocking/relieving, but doing it TWICE?

It’s sort of like, which homer do you like more - Tino’s or Brosius’?

Oh, there’s Cash on NY1. He looks, I don’t know, genius like.

My son (3.5 yrs) put on our Yankee hats and played a little wiffle ball today. He kept saying “We’re ‘ankee guys!” We were rushing home when the game started, but we can miraculously pick up 880 here in North Carolina. When he heard Sterling his eyes got wide and he said, “Did he say ‘ankees?” He’s been asleep for hours, but I’m so excited to talk with him about the game tomorrow.

Thank all of you for making me feel at home, even though I live in a place where “Yankee” is still thrown around as an epithet.

Mmmmm… pie

Jerry Hairston Jr. is awesome calling out Teix on the goggles thingie.

By the by, people are still freaking out here in Astoria.

It’s bizarre.

Cars honking, people in the streets. WTF?

I’d take Alex’s double of Lidge. Jeter passing Gehrig.

Here’s to A-Rod and his Centaur pic
Here’s to Damon Johnny and Swisher Nick

Here’s to CC, A.J., and Mo
Here’s to Molina, Cervelli, and Po

Here’s to the Captain in the leadoff spot
Here’s to Marte for getting red-hot

Here’s to Teixeira and his stretchy right leg
Here’s to fifth starters for which we would beg

Here’s to Joba and Phil, arms for the future
Here’s to Chien-Ming Wang and his sutures

Here’s to Melky and Gardner, fighting for starts
Here’s to Hariston and Hinske and other spare parts

Here’s to Cashman who put it together
Here’s to Cano, who can’t handle bad weather

Here’s to the bullpen from D-Rob to Ace
Here’s to Pettitte and the killer gaze

Here’s to Matsui, Most Valuable Player
And here’s to Girardi, who’ll need a new number

[168] Didn’t see it, but it shows the players saw Alex’s struggles, and how he changed, and how much a difference it made to their success.

Ghost- fucking awesome photoshop.

[182] real or shopped?

Thanks all for making RLYW a great place to enjoy this season.
It’s been quite a team and season.  It’s not often that we can look at a team that won 103 games and project that they are better than that (eventually 113 wins at home with only 2 starters left).  Events even conspired to (I hope) end most of the annoying A-Rod memes once and for all.

E….. love you man. What it’s all about. Mo I’m so happy.
SG, I’ll get around to thanking you. soon. Thanks…. Told ja .

I hope you let him stay up MC.

[168, 174] What I noticed is that Texeira, after making the final putout, ruins the perfect photo op by running to the middle of the field instead of wrapping Mo in a big bearhug.

NO TIME FOR LOSERS

NY1 interviewing with Robertson. Not a big kid, but he looks like a good kid..

What I noticed is that Texeira, after making the final putout, ruins the perfect photo op by running to the middle of the field instead of wrapping Mo in a big bearhug.

Bust.

Events even conspired to (I hope) end most of the annoying A-Rod memes once and for all.

Anybody who implies that Alex Rodriguez is unclutch deserves to be scoffed to death.

I have to pee/wipe the mist from my eyes- we’ll still be champs when I get back, right?

Way back in the 20th century, Bill James wrote the first essential book about baseball managers. Chris Jaffe has just written the second.

John Brattain Memorial Fund

The Hardball Times has set up a memorial fund for John Brattain's family. He left behind a wife and two teenage daughters.

Four years ago, I found from personal experience how generous the online community can be to its own in their hour of need. I am now literally begging you to be even more generous than you were to me.
