Yankees Acquire Nady and Marte

The Yankees, per Pete Abe and a cast of 1000s, have acquired OF Xavier Nady and LRP Damaso Marte from Pittsburgh for a package of Jose Tabata, Ross Ohlendorf, Phil Coke and George Kontos.

Look for a pair of roster moves overnight.. probably the end of J-Chrizzle and DesTroy Hawkins, I’d wager.

Oh, and the Yanks are playing some scrub team tonight. Discuss.

This looks dangerously close to a game chatter thread.

I could Gardner getting sent down instead of Christian.  Christian’s already 28 and his destiny is a bench player anyway.

Boo, go back to the other thread.

Marte is way better Ohlie, and Nady is way better than Tabata (an overvalued prospect if there ever was one), and all for the cost of Coke and Kontos? Priceless.

YEAH! I FUCKIN LOVE JOBA!

I’m sure this has breen bought up already, but if Marte walks at the end of the season, it’s possible he’s a type-A FA that brings back 2 draft picks.

Cashman loves draft picks.  I’m sure that was a big part of his thinking.

FUCK YOU FARNSWORTH

ENTER SANDMAN

Gardner should be sent down.  He needs to play everyday and he won’t now.  Hawkins is probably packing his bags right now.

Someone refresh my memory, because it’s fuzzy, but when the Yankees were returning Johnson to Arizona for being defective, didn’t they have their choice of Owings or Ohlendorf, and chose Ohlendorf?

haha the game is being discussed in the other thread.

i don’t think they were offered owings, but they could have had a position player.

Someone refresh my memory, because it’s fuzzy, but when the Yankees were returning Johnson to Arizona for being defective, didn’t they have their choice of Owings or Ohlendorf, and chose Ohlendorf?

according to SI.com, no:

Micah Owings is one of many things to love about the Diamondbacks. Manager Bob Melvin left Owings in to hit even though he was about to pull him from a game. He’s a .314 career hitter (with a .614 slugging percentage). The Yankees tried hard for Owings in Randy Johnson trade talks after the 2006 season, even offering to send Arizona a few million more if they’d include him. No go.

By the way, all those who said Joba should stay in the bullpen need to start eating some serious crow.

rivera is my homeboy.

Nice outing for Betances tonight: 7IP 4H 1ER 1BB 7K.

Actually, if the Yanks sign Gerrit Cole and Andrew Brackman comes back well from TJ surgery - those two along with Zach McAllister and Betances will give the team another wave of very high ceiling pitching talent in the lower levels.

Marte?
Couldn’t we get an actual MLer?

Pitcher Marte, not SS Marte.

ipk almost had a no hitter the other day

Today BPro had the Yankees around 28% to make the playoffs.  This trade might get that up to 30%.

Jose Tabata’s chance to be a star is down to about 10%.  Everyone eles is pretty much fungible.

On balance, I don’t like the odds on this kind of trade, but its pretty close.  If Marte gets one big seventh inning out or Xavier Nady makes a big play in September or October, I guess it will be worth it.

1 back of the Red Sox in the loss column.  I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s game, especially if Manny is still dinged up.

Look for a pair of roster moves overnight.. probably the end of J-Chrizzle and DesTroy Hawkins, I’d wager.

Ohlendorf was on the 40 man, so they’ll need to option one and DFA one, right?

Preferrably DFA Hawkins. Or see if some team wants him for free if they eat his salary.

also, come on KC

SG projections…and make it snappy….just kidding ...but really PLEASE

Watching the scoreboard in July is premature.  If the Yanks take care of business they will make the playoffs.  Otherwise, they won’t.

Thank you very much, Mr. Obvious.  big surprise

Yes, as long as there are no more game-threads, the yanks will be fine this season.

Watching the scoreboard in July is premature.  If the Yanks take care of business they will make the playoffs.  Otherwise, they won’t.

Whoa, that’s deep. tongue wink

Happy effin Times lads. Enjoy it. Fuck Bonds.
Brilliant Mr. the Hutt. Thanks Mo.
Marte=Good deal. Me be pleased .
Yankee Doodle Andy comes up big Saturday my effin summer is golden.
Fuck fukkin Bonds. I hope he and Clemens kill each other in a strange game of WHO DOES OTF HATE MORE. It may be the Jolly Dewbag.

Marte’s numbers look good.  Last year an ERA+ of 183 (121 at the moment).  BAbip is historically good.

On balance, I don’t like the odds on this kind of trade, but its pretty close.  If Marte gets one big seventh inning out or Xavier Nady makes a big play in September or October, I guess it will be worth it.

huh?

both are signed for 2009 if the Yankees want them to be.

they basically replaced $16M Abreu with Nady, who is a much better defender, and will make about $7M next year in arbitration.

i am guessing offense + defense, he projects as good or better than Abreu.

Marte is a very good reliever.  he has a $6M option for next year.  bye bye Farnsworth.

if they don’t want to pick up the option, Marte has a chance to be a Type A and net 2 draft picks.

IE ya kinda got punked there lad. Waddup?

What’s Nady’s deal, though?  One more year of arbitration?

Gonna miss the Hawk.
Like I’ll miss W.
Missed all the Joba innings. Someone tell me how nasty his stuff was. Please.

Berry berry nasty, OTF.

Nady with a .363 BAbip this year.  That’s not sustainable, methinks.

Missed all the Joba innings. Someone tell me how nasty his stuff was. Please.

Yankee rewind coming up, I believe.

Yes, one more arb year for Nady.  $3.35M this year.  Even coming off a career year, he’s not going to much more than double that.

So like the man said, for Abreu’s money they’ve got RF and LOOGY covered for next year if they want to keep Marte.  If not, Marte was four slots from being a type A, so he’s worth a draft pick and maybe two.

But if you can’t wait, his stuff was super awesome.

Joba’s nastiest inning was his last - the 7th.  Boston’s hitters had absolutely no chance against him during that frame.  He even threw a nice change-up along with some good curves.  If the Yanks had to win a one game playoff to make the post-season, I would rather he be on the mound than anyone else.  He hasn’t given up more than three earned runs in any start thus far.

As for Nady, perhaps he could mostly play RF and let Abreu and Giambi share the DH role.  That would give a big boost to the defense.

Nady should play RF, Abreu should DH, Hawkins should be DFA’d, Washburn should be continued to be pursued for Igawa straight up and nothing else. At first thought I didn’t like this move.. I didn’t like selling low on Tabata.  The price tags with Nady and Marte are nice, and Nady seems to be at least an average defender in RF.

Man, I can’t overstate how much I want to see Abreu DH and Nady play RF, if SG’s defensive metrics are to believed.  You just made Pettite, Mussina, Joba, Ponson, Rasner and whoever else ends up out there that much better by improving the defense.

Nady with a .363 BAbip this year.  That’s not sustainable, methinks.

It doesn’t have to be.  Even Nady v.2007 has value comparable to Abreu (offense and defense) for a lot less money.

As for Nady, perhaps he could mostly play RF and let Abreu and Giambi share the DH role.  That would give a big boost to the defense.

Probably won’t happen for a while.  At least not until Damon is fully healed.  I don’t think they want to run him out to left every day, just yet.  Nady will probably play left on the days Damon DHs, which would be most days for a while.

Man, I can’t overstate how much I want to see Abreu DH and Nady play RF, if SG’s defensive metrics are to believed.  You just made Pettite, Mussina, Joba, Ponson, Rasner and whoever else ends up out there that much better by improving the defense.

Yeah, sure, but… I can’t overstate how much I want to see Cabrera on the bench against LHP.

Damn ... IE stole my answer while I was typing it.

Damon ought to be able to play LF within 10 days to two weeks at the latest.

Nady isn’t the sexiest name, but i am confident that Cashman did his due diligence on Dunn, Bay, and Holliday and determined that they weren’t happening without Jackson or Hughes.

If this trade were proposed in these threads earlier in the day, I’d have laughed at it. I mean, some decent players and one with serious upside, but nothing that hurts the Yankees much, as only Ohlendorf would probably even see time next season. And then there’s the possible draft picks factoring in for Marte.

As for Coke and Kontos, they’d need the year in AAA next season. Tabata was probably looking at repeating AA. And as MC and yup have mentioned, both Nady and Marte will play prominent roles down the stretch, and probably in 2009 as well.

don’t forget that Nady can also play 1B.

when Damon can play LF, hopefully this ends the Sexson starting at 1B against LHB experiment.

Let’s see how this line up looks on paper now:

LF Damon
SS Jeer
DH Abreu
3B Rodriguez
1B Giambi
2B Cano
RF Nady
CF Cabrera
C Molina

Yeah, that’ll work I think.

And now Posada can finally go under the knife and be ready for 2009.

don’t forget that Nady can also play 1B.

I was just wondering about that myself.

And now Posada can finally go under the knife and be ready for 2009.

Does this also apply for Matsui? Does it even make sense for him to try to rehab now?

Long haired katts with the runs suck more than short haired katts with the squirts.
Just sayin.
Almost out of Clorox wipies. Scissors are kinda filthy too.
I guess its better than having children. What a nasty effin task. I almost tossed.

All <strike>katts</strike> cats suck.  Long-haired or short-haired, runs or squirts.

For anyone that is interested…good game at Scranton today.  Some highlights were a HR by Matt Carson - who I think will be in ST next year with a shot to earn a spot on the team if he keeps this up - and a LONG HR by Alberto Gonzalez.  Gonzalez can get the ball out of his glove REAL fast when he needs to (turned a nice DP).

Chris Stewart also had a nice game with three hits, including a BUNT single.  Made several nice defensive plays too.  Karstens pitch so-so (bad first two innings, next 3.2 very good), and Bruney and Britton pitched well.  That’s my amateur reporting from Scranton.  Good night!

Thanks for the Joba nasty stuff descriptions. Fuck Bonds. I owe yuz.

...with apologies to OTF.

No, its not better than having children…

You really learn a lot by reading other teams’ blogs and their reactions to this trade.  Most Pirate fans are pissed, but some of them are saying that Ohlendorff sits at 97 with his sinker and has ace potential and Kontos and Coke are 2/3 starters. Crazy.

PA in case you missed it:

* Phil Hughes will throw two innings in the GCL on Monday. He will soon be activated off the DL and optioned. Cashman would not predict whether Hughes would return to the majors. Cash said that teams are clamoring for Hughes in trade talks but he will not deal him.

* Carl Pavano is scheduled to start a GCL game on Tuesday. Assuming he is not attacked by bees first or gets a sunburn.

What a crazy day..

OH YM. Thurm the Katt could make you purr like a ....... Kitty.
No jokes. He’s slain everything from pigeons to Labs.
Backdoor slidered a young redtail hawk back in 99, filleted a Corgi.
He’s warm in the winter. Most men ain’t
Google Norwegian Forest Katt. He’s the 17 lb Tabby.

Phil: it is at back to school clothing sale time.
I just get him a nice cap size 2 every August.
His car insurance bills are easy to deal with also.

Why would Pirate fans expect a treasure trove of blue chip prospects for Nady (who is having a career year) and Marte, who is good, but, let’s face it - he’s a nice set-up guy?

Holy cow, OTF, that’s some seriously fuzzy cat!

Meh, I guess it’s kind of cute….I like kittens, too.  Cats, not so much - I’m a dog person.  Give me a Bernese mountain dog or a retriever over a katt anyday.

Anyone buying my theory from the previous thread that adding Marte to the bullpen reduces the need to add a costly-to-acquire starter?

Think about the bullpen:

9th:  Mariano
8th:  Farnsworth/Marte
7th:  Veras/Edwar
6th:  Robertson/Bruney?

That’s enough bullpen to shorten the game to five innings on a daily basis, not counting contributions from Geise or any of the young minor league arms, while keeping everyone rested.

Why would Pirate fans expect a treasure trove of blue chip prospects

I was amused more at the way some of them are talking about our prospects.  Phil Coke a potential #2 starter?

I have a semi-stupid question.  When we talk about getting draft picks for a type A FA, this is contingent upon someone else signing said FA, yes?  And then we get the signing team’s first-round pick + a supplemental?

As long as arbitration is offered and then rejected.

The Yanks only need to shorten the game when Snacks and Rasner are on the hill.  I would rather have Joba pitch the sixth and seventh over anyone in the bullpen.  The same goes for Mussina and Pettitte when they are on.

Gotcha.  Thx, Puj!

The Yanks only need to shorten the game when Snacks and Rasner are on the hill.  I would rather have Joba pitch the sixth and seventh over anyone in the bullpen.  The same goes for Mussina and Pettitte when they are on.

Yes, but who pitches teh 8th??!11!!1?

Mariano, apparently.

I was on the fence but leaning against the trade until I confirmed that the Yankees control Nady for next year.

So I have to vote “Yea” on the trade now.

A year and a half of BOTH Nady and Marte? That’s worth a lot.

The Yanks only need to shorten the game when Snacks and Rasner are on the hill.

That’s forty percent of the team’s starts.  And the point I’m trying to make is that by bolstering an already strong bullpen, while waiting for the returns of Wang, Kennedy, and Hughes, Cashman has found a pretty clever, relatively low-cost way to help alleviate some of the concerns over the back end of the rotation.

I would rather have Joba pitch the sixth and seventh over anyone in the bullpen.  The same goes for Mussina and Pettitte when they are on.

Well sure, but Pettitte’s the only guy who seems to be a reliable bet to go 7 or 8 innings.  Joba still has an innings limit for this year, and tonight was the first time he’s completed 7 innings.  Mussina has gone 7 innings once, and 8 innings three times.

Basically, except for Pettitte, the Yankees are looking at a lot of 5 or 6 inning starts, so again, I think the idea of adding to the bullpen makes a lot of sense.

Man, can you imagine how good things would look if Wang were healthy?

As I’ve said before…fuck the NL.

Well sure, but Pettitte’s the only guy who seems to be a reliable bet to go 7 or 8 innings.  Joba still has an innings limit for this year, and tonight was the first time he’s completed 7 innings.  Mussina has gone 7 innings once, and 8 innings three times.

Which is why the Yankees need to address the back end of the rotation in some way. You simply can’t consistently use a BP for 4 innings a game. If Wang were still healthy or either Rasner or Ponson, who both seem dangers for a <2 inning outing, were replaced by someone a bit more reliable/not terrifying, than the bullpen move would be a lot more effective. The Yankees need more than one player that can be relied on for more than 6 innings every once in a while. Which they don’t really have, unless Moose continues to get better.

IE @ 43—Exactly my thinking, fewer games with Mr. Softee in RF, replaced by the X-Man. That alone could win a game, or two.

But, with time I’ve come around a bit on the trade. Although I still think the Yankees traded low on Tabata.

Joba at 102 and lifted. Should have come out for the 8th I say.

Girardi didn’t waste time losing his *faith* in Farnsworth though.

X-Man

can we outlaw this name? It’s Xavier Carter’s nickname and he’s much better at what he does than Nady is at baseball.

Please?

You only get the signing teams 1st round pick if it is pick 16 or higher.

No, track and field don’t count. tongue wink

I too have come around on the trade, though I’m no fan of Nady and I do think the bullpen already had enough arms for the number of innings it’ll be pitching over the next 2 months.  Thanks all, for talking me into it.

Also, X-Man is Xavier McDaniel, who, very briefly, with his ability to post-up, allowed the Knicks to play Ewing facing the basket.

But, with time I’ve come around a bit on the trade. Although I still think the Yankees traded low on Tabata.

Generally, yeah, it seems like they sold a bit low on Tabata, but acquiring 2009 talent costs a LOT, so I can understand why Tabata was the cost.

Basically, it seems like a fair trade on both ends.

I forgot to talk about the game! What a game! So awesome (although, of course, some offense would be nice, too).

I especially liked how Girardi was both willing to have faith in Farnsworth enough to let him start the eighth instead of Joba, but also willing to concede that if you need the best reliever in the Majors, it’d be foolish not to use him. Good work by Girardi (Torre would have brought Mo in, too, I just have no idea who he’d open the eighth with).

Does George Vecsey ever make sense to anyone except himself?

Update the Mo Counter! 2/3 of innings to go.

Also, Mariano Rivera is life. That is all.

You only get the signing teams 1st round pick if it is pick 16 or higher.

In which case you get their second round pick, plus the sandwich pick in either case.

As long as arbitration is offered and then rejected.

Not 100% true.  Arbitration has to be offered by I think December 7th.  Most teams of course don’t offer arbitration until that date.  If the player signs with another team BEFORE arbitration is offered, his old team still gets the picks.

And though you don’t get the 1st round pick if it is in the top 15, you still get two picks I think.  The supplemental and the team’s 2nd round pick.

MC beat me to it…

Favre to the Jets would certainly be interesting. I sort of feel the same way about the Jets as I do about the Mets. I kinda can’t help pulling for them because I have so many friends who are fans, and because they almost never compete directly against my team.

Favre in New York? For the love of everything, please God no.

With how much the media fauns over the man already, the NY media would push this whole story to heights no one wants to hear or see. Nothing against the Jets(although I am a Giants fan), I just could not stand to hear the NY media talk about Favre.

Nady with a .363 BAbip this year.  That’s not sustainable, methinks.

His LD% this year is 26.5%, which is 6-7 points higher than his career average, but he is not getting lucky as far as BAbip is concerned.

As a Packers fan I love Favre, but seriously don’t want him to return.  Also, I think there’s no chance he goes to the Jets; too far from contention.
The Bucs seem the most likely, though their lack of a big time receiver hurts them.

I am also a packer fan, and I can just say that I’ve been avoiding ESPN as much as possible (even more than usual).  I was 8 years old when Favre had his first start for the packers, he’s basically the identity of the team for me.  I was happy to see him retire on his terms, but this is getting ridiculous.  I feel like he only sort of wants to play again, but when the packers were only lukewarm on his return, that sort of pissed him off and motivated him.  I’d rather not see him on another team, but the Jets would be fine for me, the bucs wouldn’t be great, but acceptable, and any NFC north team would probably psychologically wound me.

Anyone see the report from ESPN that the Red Sox are “not happy” about the Joba/Youkilis situation?  Forgot the reporter’s name but he was on after the game stating the Red Sox players were going to have a meeting about it.  Varitek said something has to be done…..
Whaaa??  Get over it, ya babies!  What a bunch of panty-wearing nancies.

p.s.  I love dogs.

DaPuj, I agree pretty whole heartedly though the identity guy for me was Reggie White.
