Repost from the dead thread below:
You gentlemen are always talking about high-end liquor. Perhaps you could offer some recommendations to someone on a graduate stipend. With the obvious proviso that anything under $50 is garbage to anything over. Here’s where I stand now in the around $25 and under range (750 mL):
Bourbon: Wild Turkey
Rye: Old Overholt
Irish whiskey: Bushmills
Scotch (blended): Teacher’s
Gin: Tanqueray
Rum: Gosling’s
Vermouth: Martini dry and sweet
I’m hoping to impress my girlfriend by the depth of my commitment to this list. She visits every few weeks and must be delighted to find herself at 30, dating someone who lives in an apartment with a painted cinder block wall with a talking George Bush doll and a poor man’s baronial liquor collection.
Just responded on the old thread Johnny. Try the Grouse.
Turk is about the best non preem bourb. Jack, Jim and Granpa belong in Thorogood songs and should stay there.
Tex surely sucks. Giambi or Tino would have hit it out.
Nimmy…..
I’m partial to Maker’s Mark myself, for relatively reasonable bourbon options.
Why is it that l-o-o-m gets nannied but D-o-n doesn’t?
I feel Makers is a semi preem. It’s pretty tasty. Could do a lot worse.
Dear SG.
Please don’t bann Don.
Love always, old thurman fan
and his faithfull katt.
Is anyone watching this game? I am. CC got screwed on a first base call but other than that…..bitch be cool.
Ohhhh Magic Bus.
I’ll put in a 3rd vote for Makers Mark. They use less rye and more wheat in their sour mash. Gives it a much nicer taste, IMHO.
This Teixeria. I approve.
Makers, indeed. Have toured the facility and was suitably impressed. Also a Bulleit fan. Though Turkey comes in cheapest of the three out here.
The radio voices listen for less than an inning isuch improved without the Susz.
Turkey is also my first choice for the good and cheap option.
Sterling brings up walking Ichiro from last game. Ban radio voice.
holy shit
“Gin: Tanqueray”
I used to drink Bombay Blue Sapphire but I decided it wasn’t appropriate for martinis, so now I use Gordon’s, which is fine for the purpose as far as I can tell, and which I imagine is cheaper than Tanqueray - and if you make gimlets, it especially shouldn’t matter (though I guess Rose’s lime juice isn’t free).
More runs and a healthy CC please.
Yeah, IIRC Gordon’s is cheaper. Maybe it’s time for a nice Bronx cocktail
More official now.
[1] Teacher’s is a very nice blend. Kind of shows what Scotch was like many decades ago, so they say. Prefer it to Famous Grouse, not as easy to come by though.
Barbancourt 8 YO Haitian Rum for drinking neat.
Wild Turkey 101 proof.
If you can find it, for Irish, try Redbreast. Great pot still whiskey.
CC Gibson. Though the heroics seem a bit unnecessary at this point in the season/game, given the opponent
A martini with lemon olives from Spain. A fine drink to sit down and l_o_o_m with on a dark and cold night. Or an afternoon. Or any time. Cheers, SG.
I can’t find Barbancourt down here. There’s a great Haitian restaurant near Brooklyn College, Rocher d’Horeb. I brought three of my younger siblings (16 or so at the time) and an even younger cousin. The waiter inquired if perhaps we’d enjoy a bottle of Barbancourt. It was about 12:45 in the afternoon on a Saturday.
My choices are a bit circumscribed because I’m in a heavy Keystone Kollege town. From what I gather, the place down the road does a brisk trade in Bacardi, vodka in plastic bottles, everclear and overproof rye.
Plymouth Gin is a nice tipple.
Yay Yankees. Runs are nice.

How great would it be to get Ian Kennedy a start before the season ends?
overproof rum, rather, as if it matters.
[27] Yeah, I understand.
Redbreast Irish is worth seeking out, under $40 a bottle.
Most places should have Wild Turkey 101 proof.
Carlos Silva brings back good memories. The only time I ever sat in a “luxury” suite at YS. Yankees brought the lumber that day. My friend was fired from XYZ Banking Firm shortly thereafter but we both agreed it was mostly worth it for that day.
The best part of the female radio voice part is that she don’t talk too much.
[30] But Villainx, I was talking to Bernie before the game and did you know this, Villainx, he’s not just an accomplished guitar player, he’s also pretty good on the drums. What do they call that, Villainx, beating the skins?
Now, if I took your handle out and replaced it with the word “John,” you’d have an actual Suzyn Waldman quote. You’re telling me you don’t miss that?

Bernie Williams could come out of retirement and line a three run shot off Silva. Bernie was the first guy who retired that caused me to say during random games, “Man, I miss Bernie.” Sure, I was saying that a lot in 2005, but let’s focus on the good times.
With regard to CC…phew.
[31] is dead on. Thankfully not on tonight.
anyone want to head to the Dandy House after the game?
True Yankee™
Teix getting his groove on.
Good things happen when Gardner doesn’t uppercut the ball.
Does Cano end the season with a higher average than Jeter?
Yay win.
awesome game, happy new year judes.
Hey all -
Long time/first time here. I felt compelled to finally register so as to offer my advice on spirits.
Red Breast is great for special occasions. Always my go-to gift among whiskey lovers.
Those who like to tipple on a regular basis without breaking the bank are advised to try RITTENHOUSE RYE whiskey. It’ll make a rye-lover out of the staunchest bourbon advocate. Arguably the best rye being made these days, and it costs ~$18 per bottle. I swear by it.
And for gin, go with Plymouth English Dry. That’s all there is to it.
Let’s all raise our glasses to a fun game tonight. Cheers, all!
Dear SG.
Please don’t bann Don.
Love always, old thurman fan
and his faithfull katt.
Not banning Don. Between the rough loss last night and a tough hangover today I was a little cranky when I saw his posts.
Sorry Don. I’ll even un-ban looming.
SG—No problem.
Guess I’m going to check out that Rittenhouse rye after today’s game.
