“A win tonight and Pavano will have as many wins”
Hmm, against Halladay? I’m just looking for a respectable start, data to argue that Pavano would be good to bring back next year as part of the shadow rotation.
Good news via Pete Abe:
UPDATE, 5:52 p.m.: Mike Mussina threw a bullpen today and said his elbow felt fine. He’s set for Sunday. Girardi said he would use all the regulars and everybody in the bullpen to get Moose the win.
As long as the weather holds up. That game almost assuredly won’t mean anything for the standings. TB’s magic number is at 1 right now, right?
Girardi said he would use all the regulars and everybody in the bullpen to get Moose the win.
Oh, in that case I’m sure they are going to win. I mean all the regulars, come on.
I was wondering if there’s any collusion on games like Sunday, or the last game at YS - if TB might agree to start a scrub and a house money lineup, or wouldn’t need to be asked.
I don’t know that Boston will do them any favors for the sake of Moose, but they probably will be resting regulars just because they want to before the playoffs start and they need to fly to Anaheim.
Right, B, not TB…

I remember in the last game of the 1985 season, Phil Niekro going for his 300th win against the Blue Jays. The Yankees went into the series needing a sweep to tie for the AL East. They won the first game but lost the second game, and Toronto threw a bunch of scrubs out there in the last game. Niekro pitched a 4-hit shutout.
I don’t think it was intentional collusion or anything though, and I doubt Boston would do the Yankees any favors Sunday. I’d also guess Mussina wouldn’t want his 20th win to be considered cheap if he was able to pull it off.
Recall RJ vulturing a win on the way to 20. Certainly Moose could say the RS needed to rest their regulars for the playoffs.
The Yankees could help Moose by helping TB clinch before Sunday.
Look at Bretty boy, racking up the hits!
Is there a rule in the rulebook that says whoever’s hitting in the 2-hole for the Yankees must GIDP at least once per game? Even if it was a bad call…
Nice thing about bad calls: when your team is out of it, you really don’t give a rat’s posterior (unless it happens during Moose’s attempt at #20).
Looking back at the entry on favorite games at the Stadium has me remembering that I was a ten-year old at that game Frog, I think, mentioned - the Reggie Returns game in 1982 when he hit the long home run off Guidry and the Steinbrenner Sucks chants broke out…..but I also remember that a guy dressed in little else but a grass skirt jumped out on the field with a bouquet, ran to Reggie in the outfield, laid the bouquet at his feet then got on his knees and bowed repeatedly to Jackson until security came and took him away. The sky later opened up and poured down enough rain to end the game after 7 innings.
Niekro pitched a 4-hit shutout.
Without throwing the knuckleball until the ninth inning.
I have learned a couple of things from watching the Mets/Cubs game for a bit:
1. Lenny Dykstra is drunk. Or stoned. Or both.
2. Pedro really should retire after this season. His decline has been stunning and it’s really sad to watch.
A friend of mine asked why they go around the horn after a k. I had no answer.
I have asked that very question many times, to no avail.
So the only/main question about Gardner is whether he can make consistent contact, right?
By consistent contact, I mean hitting around .260 - .280.
One good thing about being out of it, that HR doesn’t suck as much.
I understand that there are differences, one of which is FA signing and all that, but Leiter was not exactly durable as a young pitcher. Only saying based on Michael Kay’s criticism of Pavano and the possibility of him getting another FA contract.
Hey kids!
Christ, Mets’ pen is a gift that keeps on giving.
Do we expect Humberto2 to contrbute next year?
man thats a lot of youngsters playing in this “game”
this Hallady fellow is pretty good.
96 pitch CG? Even against the JV that’s pretty good.
Anyone worried about Mo?
Not worried about Mo…yet. Seems like he goes through little aches and pains every year. Hopefully nothing but some mild fatigue, shut him down and let the guy rest.
Cubs ‘pen out-Mets’-penned the Mets’ pen. Impressive.
Do we expect Humberto2 to contrbute next year?
Probably no earlier than the second half of the season.
David Wright is teh unclutch again.
Guys- Stop ganging up on Donzo.
Frog- Thanks for the invite to address the The Genealogy of Morals.
I feel I should decline.
I really was never much of a Packer fan and my knowledge of Nitschke is quite limited.
#66 went to Illinois and was a sideline to sideline attack dog.
I know he loved Superman even more than Seinfeld.
Upon entering Canton he mumbled something about “Nobler to declare oneself wrong than insist on being right, especially when one is right”
What that has to do with Jim Brown breaking your face on third and two, is College-boy Mumbo Jumbo to me.
Butkus and Kaiser Wilhelm held him in high esteem so he had to be a great player. As did that whacky Austrian lad.
I’m Old Thurman Fan and I approved this message.
Thurm for übermensch.
A friend of mine asked why they go around the horn after a k. I had no answer.
It’s one of two things:
1) Keep the infield involved; same as a GB out with the bases empty, get everyone involved.
2) Some obscure ritual started 100 years ago that others picked and has been done ever since.
I think it’s the former, but in baseball, it could certainly be the latter as well!
Looks like virtually no chance of playing in Boston tonight. Tomorrow is pretty iffy as well. Since the games mean nothing if Tampa wins one, they probably won’t bother to make them up. Only a few showers in the forecast for Moose’s shot at 20 on Sunday, though.
It’s one of two things:
Nah, it’s so the pitcher can adjust his jock without having to worry about what to do with the baseball.
If you thought it was too late for the season to take another downhill turn, the NY Times is reporting that Mo will need arthroscopic shoulder surgery.
NY Times is reporting that Mo will need arthroscopic shoulder surgery.
No, they are reporting that he may need arthroscopic shoulder surgery.
That’s terrible news. If Mariano needs surgery he llikely miss the start of the 09 season and his obvious replacement is Joba (because there is no way the Yankees sign K-Rod. I hate the idea of Joba not starting the season in the rotation.
If Joba is the closer, who’ll pitch teh 8th?!??!?!111
Has the Pavano era ended for the Yankees?
Has the Pavano era ended for the Yankees?
I’ll sign him for the league minimum, but I think he wants to leave.
