POOMA Yankee Win Probability: 84.45%

The Blue Jays are fielding their 1968 lineup today.

And apparently, RLYW is fielding no lineup today.

fan interference?  double?

It’s look closer than I tought. What do you think?

After all those replays, definitely looked foul.

looked to me that it hit the guy’s hand, but the guy’s hand was in front of the foul pole.  What would THAT be?

After the close up I would say good call.

Good Cano is unbelievably better than Bad Cano.

I have to withdraw my earlier characterization of the state of knowledge of whether there’s evidence for good pitching coaches.  Dunno if my contention is supported by other sources - I’ll have to look when I have time.

jeter is a hit closer. I’m really dying for three home runs though - first team with 8 players with 20 would be a real feat. the gehrig thing is cool as well though.

Peterson, although he wasn’t quite the miracle worker with the mets does deserve a second chance for the job he did with the A’s.

On another note, can anybody see Pettite working on his stare the way ben stiller does in Zoolander?

if so, what does he call it?

damnit ruiz!!!

You’d think Pettitte would be more careful with Ruiz this time.

It’s now an official Yankee game.

Gameday hated the zone during the Bautista ab.

nice at bat by teix.

Yay four pitch walk.

Cone mentioned that the Yankees are second in the AL (possibly ML) in 4-pitch walks.

Walking the #9 batter to start the inning.  Not good, Andy.

Must be number one by season end in four pitch walks.

Why would you have one of the worst hitters inb aseball swing 3-0?

I can’t believe Navy almost beat Ohio State. And Minnesota is losing to Syracuse. What a crappy conference the Big 10 is.

the season doesn’t officially start until the RU vs. Cincy game on monday.

[11] There’s not much evidence for a Mazzone effect in Baltimore, though.

[13] It’s not like Petereson had any talent to work with in Oakland.

Awesome defense, guys.

The old little league home run.

Walking the first batter with a 5-4 lead.  Priceless.

At least he threw him one strike.

[25] He only got 2 years, right?  Which wouldn’t be a lot of time, systematically or statistically.

Still, the whole thing could just have been good scouting/evaluation by the Braves as far as I can tell - buying low, selling high.

break it open here plz

Downs auditioning for the Yankees.

He must have a good agent.

So Hughes is still closing.  Who gets the 8th?  Marte?  Bruney?

Nice one, Jorge.

Looks like Bruney for the eighth.

We knew what we would get from Posado.

Girardi still trying to make Bruney happen.  Could be ugly against Ruiz.

I like this “all strikes” approach compared to the “all balls” approach.

Bruney’s also around 95-97 on the fastball.  A few days ago he was 92 or so, that makes a big difference for him.

I like this “all strikes” approach compared to the “all balls” approach.

Too soon.

I mean, he still needs to put it near the strikezone, but at least if he does it won’t get destroyed.

Kay thinks Hughes is on for the 4 out save, but we all know he’s just here to get the last out of the 8th.

It’s the Phil Hughes Most Important Out of the Game!

DaPuj always loses the tiebreaker somehow.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Boston is burning!

WSox up 3-0 after one.

Texas is looking to close to one game in the WC…

The YES gun has been totally worthless the last three games.

[47] - I think it’s cause I’m on the west coast.

Actually, it’s a good thing.

NY will now score 7 runs… because NOT doing so would leave Phil in to get outs other than the PHMLOE (Phillip Hughes Memorial Last Out of the Eighth).

‘Memorial’ makes it sound like he’s dead.

Matsui injury?  To what?  Can’t be the knees; he hasn’t any.

[52]
It’s pre-retired.
What happened to Matsui?
Can one raise a being that’s already a zombie

so who plays in the outfield now?

Matsui injury?  To what?  Can’t be the knees; he hasn’t any.

Frasor banged himself up a bit.

This offense is relentless.

[53] Injury delay was for the Toronto pitcher.

[55] I assume they lose the DH and move Swisher to RF, Teixeira to 1B.

Swisher will get probably moved, though if they score 9 runs I wonder if we’d see Pena out there.

[55]
Tiexs to first, Swish to the OF, no DH.

so who plays in the outfield now?

Swisher goes out to right, Teixeira goes to first and they lose the DH.

ah, i figured as much [57]. Although it would be interesting to see Pena out there

Wow that was ball 4.

Nice call ump.

I’ve gotten some cool timestamps today.

Tschida being very extremely generous to Frasor this inning.

Umpire is secretly Frasor’s mom

Looks like the strikezone has expanded about 5 more inches outside.

I like how it is a 2-2 count to Swisher and Gameday doesn’t have a single pitch within the strikezone or even touching the edge of the strikezone.

Gameday abd Tschida have very strong disagreements about what is a strike and what is a ball.

Ball one to Chavez a clear strike on gameday.  Ball two a strike near the edge of the zone.

Why do we still have umpires?
It’s preposterous.

Hughes is philthy.

Hughes is unreal.  Thank you for leaving for Houston, Andy.

First time a game has been saved by a player acquired with a compensation pick for the pitcher who got the win?

The Yankees have a 170 OPS+ in “late and close” this season, and an OPS+ of 1712 in the 9th inning overall this season.

More likely to win a Cy Young in the next 3/5 years Hughes or Joba?

171 OPS+ for the 9th inning.  Typing fail.

1712 would be pretty good though.

First time a game has been saved by a player acquired with a compensation pick for the pitcher who got the win?

Nice pick…

[76] Neither… i haven’t seen enough long-term work…

Gavin Floyd pitching a perfect game in Chicago… through five

Go White Sox, Texas, knock Boston out for the joy of it and so we don’t have to face Verlander twice in a five game shootout.

And it’s gone.  5 2/3 innings.

Two more innings puleeze

Yay Yankees.

Way back in the 20th century, Bill James wrote the first essential book about baseball managers. Chris Jaffe has just written the second.

From now on, whenever I have a question about a manager, Jaffe's book will be the first and last one I reach for.

John Brattain Memorial Fund

The Hardball Times has set up a memorial fund for John Brattain's family. He left behind a wife and two teenage daughters.

Four years ago, I found from personal experience how generous the online community can be to its own in their hour of need. I am now literally begging you to be even more generous than you were to me.
