The Yanks put six consecutive batters up there that slug over .500.  That’s fairly sick.

And the guy before those six batters gets on base 4 out of 10 times, and the guy after them slugs .624 on the road.

Wonder if Hughes is available tonight?

He will be once Girardi tries to close the game with Bruney and he walks the first two batters he faces.

[1] the fact that Alex Rodriguez has the lowest slugging of the bunch is even sicker.

[5] He’s walking too much.

[6] He is trying to kill this rally with his walk.

RS score 2 in the top of the first.

Stupid Price.

4 runs and 29 pitches in the first is perfectly acceptable. If they keep this pace all game, they should be able to hold on and win.

Zobrist has been awesome this year.

Can Burrell get above replacement level?

Only 4 umps tonite ?

Only 4 umps tonite ?

Thankfully.  Someone must have revoked their season tickets.

I flipped over to the Jays radio feed, and its like night and day. They are talking about the pitches thrown, giving descriptions of where the defenders are positioned, and called a pop fly to the OF without saying “Driven deeeep…”

In French, right?
Do they have man-crushes on Gaudin?

Chad Gaudin with a new action gameday pic.

Yeah, strange.

The Uggla-HanRam row - money?  race?  losing?

Buchholz duplicates Price’s first inning, plus a walk.  But Baldelli just hit one out.  - Ok, life’s too short to care.

“Chad Gaudin with a new action gameday pic.”

The action appears to be falling asleep drunk while standing.

I think Gaudin is convinced that since almost all other Yankees pitchers BB or HBP an opposing batter every inning, he has to as well.

[22] A useful skill. Assuming you can stay standing up.

This might be a good time to ask if anyone remembers when the Jays had the best record in the AL and the Yankees were in 4th place earlier this season?

I know the fine people at espNESN don’t, even though they were the ones telling me the Jays were for real.

This is just what the doctor ordered for a Chad Gaudin start.

If you just jinxed it, I’m gonna craw up to the greater Boston area and shaking my unwavering fist in your general direction.

4 pitch walk!

Walking Wells on 4 pitches is pretty atrocious.  The guy’s RAR is -9.4!

Remember when Wells was a 4.0 WAR player at age 24? What happened?

Nice movement on that Aceves fastball to get Lind.

3 2/3 and 3 ER against this awful lineup = the reason this guy shouldn’t get anywhere near the postseason roster.

I blame Johnathan.

I should start checking for spelling and grammar.

Chavez also a credible candidate for Pig Man. If there is such a thing.

What a stat padder.  Doesn’t he know that they’re already ahead?

So THAT will be on Sportscenter later tonight, you can be sure.

Alex just got a little extra.

Yeah, she looked *pissed*. Might just be part of the job description though.

3 2/3 and 3 ER against this awful lineup = the reason this guy shouldn’t get anywhere near the postseason roster.

To be fair, the first four batters in the Jays lineup have been very good this year.
But Gaudin did struggle against the back end of the lineup to start the fourth.

[41] was in reference to [37-39]

Also, [40] He walked Vernon Wells corpse on 4 pitches with a 5 run lead, inexcusable.

[41] A-Rod chased a foul ball, ran over a policewoman and…how to put this…

He “copped” a feel.

Is Aceves back to awesome?

What of the funniest things to watch is Melky putting on the breaks.

Safe at first.

“He “copped” a feel.”

Bravo.

*One of the funniest…

Jeter was safe by a mile.  How a major league umpire can blow that call when it’s right in front of him is beyond me.  Totally unacceptable.

Safe by a mile. Terrible call.

[47] Thanks. I was trying to put something together about grabbing second base, but it just didn’t gel.

[50] He stole second base.

Does that work?

And now Aceves is struggling against the ass end of this lineup.

Posada is having a hell of a night behind the plate

[51] A-Rod stole second base while playing defense.

Plus, the spectator hit two balls in foul territory {with her chair}.

Piss-poor, A-Rod.  Piss-freakin’-poor.

Are these fans booing the guy’s being ejected or his actions?

Are these fans booing the guy’s being ejected or his actions?

I was saying Boo-urns.

[57] At least in my top 5 of all time moments on that show

I just watched that crazy Bob Dylan flick. I kind of liked it.

Bring us your finest food stuffed with your second finest food.

Good choice sir, that’s lobster stuffed with tacos!

I’m thinking that fan in the crowd chanting “Jor-hay” probably shouldn’t have taunted a guy who’s 2 for 3 and then hits a double.

But Posada still owes us a slide, modammit. Thinks we’ve forgotten. I want my slide !

Robertson looking nasty.

Hey Vill, are you OK? Quiet tonight you are.

these appearances are really helping aceves pad his wins

Ah, good. Robertson bumping his K rate up a tad.

BB

Brian Bruney, or Base on Balls?

When was the last time a non-Mo Yankee got back to back saves?

[67] 1996 World Series - John Wetteland?

Actually its probably that year that Mo started the season on the DL, 2002 I think.

Who the F*** is Jason Frasor and how does he have a 1.7 ERA?

Paddy McStatpadder

Is it really stat padding, or redemption for his early error and sexual harassment?

They’re like an assassin.

That was a Bomb.  Reggie Posadason.

Jooooooor-Haaaaaaaayyyyyy !

Still no slide. Would it kill him to slide ?

Good call, Ted, Karsay got a decent amount of saves in 2002, didn’t he?

Perhaps Gordon?

Thats the Jason Frasor I expected.

Bruney for a second inning now? Melancon for a rare appearance?

Nice knowing you, Tampa Bay.

WTF was that ? Was he trying to hit the bull ?

Jorge putting the finishing touches on a HOF career….

Seriously, in terms of hitting, he basically hasn’t slowed down at all and if not for some injuries which have kept down his playing time, but not his performance, he’d be a lot closer. Also, if you don’t subscribe to the whole “He saved his knees by not being a full-timer until his mid-to-late 20’s”, it’s clear his counting numbers would have him there by now had he played instead of Girardi back then.

That’s just hilarious.

Four pitch walk with a 5-run lead in the 9th inning.

High-larious.

Sigh….A 5 run lead and he walks the first batter in the ninth on 4 pitches.

So far so good?

A healthy Marte is a damn good Marte.

Seriously, when will Marte pass Coke on the depth chart?

He looks great.

Seriously, when will Marte pass Coke on the depth chart?

Pretty sure he already has.

That would be amazing if this team became the first team to ever have eight players to hit 20 homers.

Hey Vill, are you OK? Quiet tonight you are.

surprised

I actually like the Bruney 4 pitch walk. He looked good in teh ate, almost good enough that Girardi might start having confidence in him. The 4 pitch walk to start the 9th with a five run lead destroys all that goodwill, which is a good thing in the long run.

Also, Marte got to appear and hopefully solidify his spot as the top LOOGY on this team.

Melancon for a rare appearance?

Just to continue from when he was last in the bigs, a 5 run lead isn’t enough for a Melancon appearance.

Yay win!

Way back in the 20th century, Bill James wrote the first essential book about baseball managers. Chris Jaffe has just written the second.

From now on, whenever I have a question about a manager, Jaffe's book will be the first and last one I reach for.

John Brattain Memorial Fund

The Hardball Times has set up a memorial fund for John Brattain's family. He left behind a wife and two teenage daughters.

Four years ago, I found from personal experience how generous the online community can be to its own in their hour of need. I am now literally begging you to be even more generous than you were to me.
