I just want to take a moment to note that today marks the 30th anniversary of Thurman Munson’s tragic death.  I was a little too young to understand it at the time, but I can’t imagine what it must have been like for his family, his teammates, and for Yankee fans old enough to understand it.

Go Yankees.

I don’t even know what to say.

I hate Cano.

I hate Cano.

Can we still trade him for Reggie Sanders?

I think CC will come up big today and we have usually done well against Buerhle.  The Toronto series is a different story, I’d be thrilled to get a split against the Jays considering the two negative pitching matchups.  It was interesting to see that Cody is as bad or worse against lefties then righties destroying the last rationale for ever playing him.  I was hoping that we would need to call someone up from Scranton for the bullpen and Cash would reluctantly have to cut Ransom

Cano is having a very good year and if he ever gets the RISP monkey off his back he might be a future MVP.  He’s hardly our biggest problem.

The Yanks have had a crap three game run now, but they’re still first in the AL East with the second best record in baseball.  They vaulted past the Sox on their ridiculous homestand, and simply aren’t sustaining it on the road.  They’ll right…worry not.  Let’s just hope the second half CC of legend arrives for this afternoon’s game.

And in other splendid Yankee news Montero was hurt yesterday and his year could be finished.

Bad as Towers is might he not be a better option then Mitre?  He had a less bad ML career. Early in the season with Wang struggling should/could Cash have made a deal for a little better rotation depth then Mitre provides.

Making him work! Way to go guys!

I was away from the internet and tv the past two days, do the Yankees have some sort of allergy to winning games against teams named after foot coverings?

And are the Yankees planning on doing something about Mitre? They honestly don’t plan on giving him another start, do they?

The other options are, realistically, Towers, Hirsh and Igawa. What do you think? Nova hasn’t been very good recently and no one in AA is really all that close, maybe Bleich, and McCallister is resting. Romulo Sanchez has been OK starting for Scranton, but he’s really a reliever.

9:as of now they do.  At best the alternatives are only marginally better as of now, the problem could be that the FO let us get in this bind.

Shouldn’t they just keep auditioning anyone with a pulse in that 5th spot until they catch lightning in a bottle? Isn’t that a better idea than continuing to run Mitre out there and watching him get worse each start?

I would honestly be willing to give Igawa one start.

10:I’d take a shot with Towers, can he be worse?

in NYS, yes. He doesn’t stke anyone out and gives up, for his career, 1.5 HR/9.

Where has CC’s control been lately?

13 Kei pitched yesterday so he wouldn’t be ready for a Wed start.  Maybe if they don’t spin the wheel with someone else they should just pitch Mitre against Halliday and write that game off so Petitte can pitch for the split on Wed.  I actually think that would be the long term tactically best move.

Nice catch Melky!

Clay I believe Towers’s historical K rate is higher then Mitre’s.  I’ll double check.

Take that, Mr Perfect!

GIDP pending.

No perfecto for Buehrle today!

I claim victory. There is obviously no way the Yankees are going to win against a team called “Sox”.

Right-handed homer Melky!

Melky is OPSing .800!

Whoa, Melky homers! Yankees refused to get shutout even.

I claim victory again. While I am still skeptical the Yankees are going to win against a team called “Sox”, they have already exceeded my expectations.

I’m texting my vote for Melky as player of the game right now

Message to Sterling, keep talking about everyone in the Yankees lineup having 10 HR all you want, but be prepared for me to throw you and your stats into the East River.

Melky Cabrera = stud

Mitre better HR/9 slightly better K/9 much worse BB/9 and worse lifetime era+ and he’s already failed this year.  Headache or an upset stomach

I specifically un-muted the game to hear Hawk Harrelson sound bummed out about Melky’s homer.

Hairston: On base machine

I specifically un-muted the game to hear Hawk Harrelson sound bummed out about Melky’s homer.

So, how did he react?

The difference in Melky’s hitting from the right side this year and prior years in his career has really been striking.  Might just be small samples (110 RH at bats this year).  But he his swing looks much better.  He’s not getting over powered as often from the RH side and is swinging at much better pitches.

Get that catch from him in the 1st inning and that HR.  That’s a very nice contribution from your CF.

Message to Sterling, keep talking about everyone in the Yankees lineup having 10 HR all you want, but be prepared for me to throw you and your stats into the East River.

Excellent.

I specifically un-muted the game to hear Hawk Harrelson sound bummed out about Melky’s homer.

Doubly excellent.

Hairston>>>>Ransom.  At long last could this be the end of Ransom(Rico)

[34] Probably silence.

Fixed.  Sorry…

Dave left an italics tag open and it is slowly destroying the internets.

Hey….those were some runs!

Help, we are getting italicized.

CC is like kryptonite to Buerhle.

O’s rolling over and playing dead for Boston as usual

CC, is it written in your contract that you have to start every single hitter with a ball? Come on man.

Dear CC,

Put a 0 this inning, please.

Thanks.

CC this team needs you to be real good

[37] Nope. Now Ransom is Teix’s caddy, since Teix sits about 5 games per season. And Hinske has a restrained order on him that doesn’t allow him within 60 feet of a LHP, so they can’t use Swisher at 1B and Hinske in RF.

Ransom would have turned a DP

50:but Ransom is even worse against LHP-does Girardi even know that

WTG, CC.

and Shelley can play 1b and sometimes he even runs into one

I am a damn bum. I just realized the game is available on WGN.

Ransom would have turned a DP thrown the ball away

Fixed.

56 or let it get by for a run scoring double

Yankees, Masters of the infield hit.

I’m sure Ransom knows that he sucks. What surprises me is that Girardi and Cashman seem not to know.

[52] No, no they don’t. That is why they sent down a guy (Shelley) who might be able to run into one against LHP and kept a guy who now serves no purpose (Cody).

[55] Same here, I was doing the usual gameday/Sterling audio feed, but I blame Time Warner for not having WGN in HD, so I had to go to the standard def channels to find the game.

[58] That seems like too gritty off a skill for highly (over)paid players to possess.

Cano has rarely met a first pitch that he didn’t like.

[62] he hits near .400 on first pitches.

Is Hawk the worst color guy in baseball?  If he’s not, how is that humanly possible?

[63] Then I guess first pitches like him as well.

I mean p-b-p

Buehrle has been up in the zone all game.  Only 12 of the 46 pitches he’s thrown have been in the lower part of the zone.  When he’s one he’s much better than that with his location.  Yankees need to score more runs before he settles in.

Hawk sucked as the Yankees’ TV p-b-p guy in the ‘80s.

I remember Ramon Castro hitting a long HR against Randy Johnson as a Met. But then, I remember Miguel Cairo doing the same, and Jose Molina as well. Also, Johnson gave up like 3-4 straight HRs against White Sox one day all of a sudden without notice.

So, in summary, I remember a lot of crappy things about Randy Johnson during his tenure with the Yankees.

[64] Yes, yes he is. At least to non-White Sox fans. I am guessing some White Sox fans like his over the top homerness.

I wonder if there’s any truth to the rumor that we could have had Bannister but wanted KC to pick up some of his salary

69 I remember RJ beating Boston and Wake 1-0.  He was pretty good for us the first year.

[71] Less than half of $1,737,500? I wonder what the player personnel cost was.

[68] Did he out and out root for the Yankees during those games? Or did he still root for the White Sox back then? (Which admittedly would have been kind of funny)

[69] I remember Randy Johnson crapping the bed in the 05 and 06 ALDS.

[70] and I’m sure some Yankee fans like Sterling.

[74] It’s too long ago for me to remember, but I can recall that he was really self-absorbed.

Farns!

[75] Are you sure about that?

CC sucking AGAIN

CC needs to be rested as much, if not more, than Joba. The abuse points have caught up with him.

Well, Berroa.

Our fucking ace.

Fuck it, maybe I should just become a soccer fan.

CC’s control is pretty poor, which is very uncharacteristic of him.

Also, I am getting tired and pretty disgusted of the Yankee performances when they play a team named Sox.

Damon flashing the arm.

Really depressing back to back performances by AJ and CC, but at least AJ has been very good lately.  Prior to today CC had been at least a minor disappointment, given a 3-0 lead coming off a 3 game losing streak I’m deleting the minor part.

If good pitching is infectous did AJ and CC catch Mitritis?

This has become a major gut check game.

Melky came to play!

How short of a leash should CC be on for the rest of the game?

How the hell did the O’s score 6 on the RS?

I like this version of Melky.

I hate, hate, hate that bunt.  With the way CC is pitching we need to play for the big inning.

I was going to do the hockey reference and Kay beat me to it. I’m ashamed on multiple levels.

[91] Isn’t uber-prospect Bucholtz on the mound?

Anyway, it probably doesn’t matter as they have given up 7.

Shields no no thru 6 v Royals as TB creeps closer.

Molina scored from second on a single? Whoa.

[95] But TB is also scoreless, so I am rooting for Shields to get the no hitter, but lose 1-0.

[96] There was a wormhole between 2nd and 3rd that allowed him to shortcut his way home.

I could’ve sworn that Leiter just justified the Hairston bunt because ‘this looks like it’s gonna be a high-scoring game.’

We need to win this game but even if we do CC is depressing the hell out of me

And that’s why you NEVER give away outs!

Way back in the 20th century, Bill James wrote the first essential book about baseball managers. Chris Jaffe has just written the second.

From now on, whenever I have a question about a manager, Jaffe's book will be the first and last one I reach for.

John Brattain Memorial Fund

The Hardball Times has set up a memorial fund for John Brattain's family. He left behind a wife and two teenage daughters.

Four years ago, I found from personal experience how generous the online community can be to its own in their hour of need. I am now literally begging you to be even more generous than you were to me.
