This game started off great last time, until the rains wahsed it away.  It’s cause for celebration anyway, as this is the final interleague game of the year.

We might be in trouble—their #8 hitter has a higher OPB than ours.

I posted this in the previous thread..

Melky’s better than Coco Crisp by this measure.

The number that jumps out at me is that Melky is +6 on defense.  That’s not a number you would expect to see from someone who is a 4th OF (as Melky’s recent performance is causing people to suggest.) Something tells me you can’t teach defense and range, but you can work on his approach at the plate. I’ll mention this in the game thread, but something to watch for with Melky tonight when he’s at bat against a LHP is that his back right foot slides out from under him (towards the 3B side dugout.) I guess you can hit that way, meaning you can get bat to ball, but you can’t hit for power like that (if your weight is on that foot and you slide it back, you’ll fall over). Compare it to Melky’s swing from the left side, where he is balanced, the feet just twist underneath him as he rotates his hips, like when he hit that homerun the other day.  Anyone with any thoughts?

Yessir, he sure is On a higher Percentage of Bases. Good ol’ OPB. Great stat.

is Pittsburgh’s pitcher the same guy they were beating last time?

Did we just go back in time?  After the Mets series you told us “at least interleague play is over.”  Lies, damnit!

Mikey Moose for win number 12 tonight. Do it up broseph.

Longoria won the final vote. Bullshit, that cat doesnt have any facial hair.

The fates owe Jeter a double.

It’s freaking me out that these two pitchers were starting last time too. How did the schedulers know???

Maybe he should just stop switching. Somehow, however, I doubt that a hitting coach says that very often to a guy is an “established switch hitter.”

Why do you say that?  Endy Chavez is one of the best defensive OF on the planet, but he’s a 4th OF.  I’d think that a 4th OF is more likely to be above average defensively and worse at bat than the other way around, although I suppose that’s an easy enough theory to test.

If I’m not mistaken, something yummy hangs in the balance.

Ah yes. Donuts all around!

There is so much coverage of Arods divorce its asinine, how many baseball players in history have gotten divorced? good god. I often worry that Arod and his drama will one day reach critical mass and New York will turn into a super massive black hole.

Nine more years to go of the A-Freud circus.

Maybe kabbalah will force him to retire early?

Maybe kabbalah will force him to retire early?

If he starts speaking with a phony British accent, then I’ll be worried.

Wtf only a single this time?!

All 3 of those swinging strikes from A-Rod looked awful.

Dammit Madonnas gone an fucked up Arods swing. Imagine how much damage the home run derby would do?

Paul Mahomeboy sure does throw a big sweeping curveball.

I’m not sure what Madonna has to do with Freud. That form of analysis is way too untrendy and old-fashioned for her to bother with it.

5-pitch inning, Al.  Not 4.  Stay on top of it.

I mean, Ken.  Not Al.

wow that was awesome.

Post #1 reminds me of Michael Kay and Paul O’Neill on a broadcast saying:

“You down with OBP?”

“Yeah, you know me”

Clear the pitchers’ spots?  Please?

Drat.

Bring back Kevin Thompson.

After Cano, the Yankee lineup kind of falls off a Kilimanjaro.

Damn, that bottom three sure knows howw to go dows quickly.

Sterling was horribly wrong about Josh Hamilton’s walk-off last night - that is hilarious.

Sweet crap, this ump is squeezing Moose.

Sterling was horribly wrong about Josh Hamilton’s walk-off last night - that is hilarious.

What did he say?

He said Hamilton hit a walk-off three run homer with the Rangers down 2.

Gameday suggests a hanging curveball for Moose on the Bautista single.

You PROBABLY don’t want to throw this many pitches. smile

Jeter has an early date tonight, it would appear.

You PROBABLY don’t want to walk Abreu to face the righthanded batter.

Crappity.

At least he made contact!

“He said Hamilton hit a walk-off three run homer with the Rangers down 2.”

Color me confused—that seems to make sense.

“Mike Mussina versus Paul Maholm in a pitching duel”

Really, Sterling, you could say that about every Yankee game nowadays.

Color me confused—that seems to make sense.

It was a two-run shot down one.

Of course the Yanks will play in here.  One run could mean the game with WOE.

Sadly, that really could be the ballgame.

All said and done, I’ll take it.

The Pirates’ record is closer to the Yankees than the Yankees’ record is to the Rays.

Way to out-NL yourselves Pirates.

Nice K there, Moose!

I just ran into January 2008 Brian Cronin, and I told him that the Yanks right now are considering keeping Giambi, Moose and perhaps even Farnsworth next year.

Oh how he laughed.

Posada, Cano and 4 pitchers to come up. Huzzah!

With Gardner on the team, Duncan (as bad as he is) might not be such a bad person to have on the team instead of Christian.

With Gardner on the team, Duncan (as bad as he is) might not be such a bad person to have on the team instead of Christian.

This is a good point. Duncan really sucks, but he at least gives the team a chance that he’ll run into a pitch and hit it a long way.

To save some time, the Yankees should just concede three outs and skip the top of the fifth.

So basically Mussina has to throw zeroes on the board, and basically hope that A-Rod through Posada can actually do something.

I would not get my hopes up if I were him.

I’d almost prefer that, Jonathan, than risk getting one of them on just so Jeter will make the last out rather than lead off.

But then I realize that it is better to give them a CHANCE. I mean, Melky hit a home run recently, right?

A-Rod through Posada

Ha!

I love that.

A-Rod through Posada.

Classic.

WOE is us.

I know Melky is not up next inning, just noting that as an example of weird stuff that could happen.

Why would Mussina throw that pitch on 0-2?

But then I realize that it is better to give them a CHANCE. I mean, Melky hit a home run recently, right?

Yes, a blind squirrel can find a nut on occasion.

I was flipping through channels the other day and caught the ending of the season finale of Magnum P.I.‘s second-to-last season.

At the time, though, they intended for it to be the last episode, as it is totally written as a SERIES finale.

Can anyone think of another example of an episode written as a series finale, but the show kept going (Boston Legal’s finale this year and How I Met Your Mother after Season 2 are two other examples)?

Good Moose. Too bad he’s not going to win his 12th game tonight

Interesting discussion on the Pirates broadcast about how they feel like they should be the Indians natural rival, and play them every year, rather than the Reds.

Hadn’t thought of it before, but I suppose they’re probably right.

Yeah, I agree, NMC, that does make more sense.

Kind of surprising the Yankees are having trouble scoring here.  This pitcher must be very good.  NL Cy Young candidate?

“You need Molina and Posada in the lineup tonight because they are facing a lefty and they have no other righthanded hitters”

Sigh…Sterling, Sterling, Sterling…

He has been very good his last eight starts.

Cy Young candidate?

Aren’t they all?

That gives me an idea. If a pitcher wants to win Cy Young this year, they should petition the MLB to face the Yankees approximately 8 times in the year. Should get it done.

Yes, swing at the first pitch, Justin.  That will help the cause.

I mean, GOOD, but not so good.

Mussina shows ‘em how to do it.

Yes some of the guys who shut us down are good and some not so good but there are just way too many pitchers totally dominating us since the Cincy series and even before when the WOE label was first applied

This is VINTAGE WOE.

Two outs? Get enough hits to NOT score.

Mussina’s first hit since 2002

I’ve only started watching How I Met Your Mother within the last few months or so.  What happened with the Season 2 finale?

Can Abreu be clutch AGAIN?

C’mon Mr. Softee.

Man this offense sucks.

Okay, Jonathan, I guess your offer of forfeiting the inning WAS better. smile

It’s the Rust Belt Rumble.

I know you guys are making fun, but Paul Maholm is not that bad. It’s not like it’s Sidney Ponson shutting them down.

I know you guys are making fun, but Paul Maholm is not that bad. It’s not like it’s Sidney Ponson shutting them down.

The problem is Sydney Ponson WOULD shut them down if he faced them.  At least this year.

Abreu’s hating sabbatical is over

I think Cano smokes a lot of pot.

Cano should make that play.

What happened with the Season 2 finale?

The lead guy (Ted) breaks up with his girlfriend because they both agree that they would never marry each other, and he wants to date someone where marriage might be in the future.

So at the end of the episode, he goes on to a balcony with Barney (Neil Patrick Harris), and says he is going to continue searching for the right woman.

Barney is pleased. Have you seen how he says “Legen (pause) DARY!”? Well, he is happy and says “Legen” and the screen goes black.

That sucked a LOT.

I think Jorge Posada smokes a lot of pot.

In the pregame Serling said how much he liked the lineup now he claims its weak.

This team should sometimes hit pitchers who aren’t terrible.  They have now been held to two or fewer runs 30 times going on 31 as against 32 times all of last year.  That’s weak.

That was an error for Posada

Oh for fuck’s sake!!

Now Moose is going to give tons of runs

The defense has been hilariously bad this inning.

I’m not even sure who’s responsible for that, but they obviously smoke a lot of pot.

I can’t believe that’s a run.

Oh, give me a break, Suzyn! They scored because of TWO ERRORS!!

Sure blame it on the weed

Oh! There’s the game.

Way back in the 20th century, Bill James wrote the first essential book about baseball managers. Chris Jaffe has just written the second.

John Brattain Memorial Fund

The Hardball Times has set up a memorial fund for John Brattain's family. He left behind a wife and two teenage daughters.

Four years ago, I found from personal experience how generous the online community can be to its own in their hour of need. I am now literally begging you to be even more generous than you were to me.
