Comments
Wow quite the interesting lineup today.
oh god, the bottom five of that line up is depressing.
Im feeling good about Betemit today even from the Right side.
I’m not feeling good about Betemit’s defense at 2B though.
I can’t say I understand this lineup. Why give so many hitters the day off when Ras hasn’t been pitching great of late and we want to avoid losing the season series to the Muts?
Oh, man, they’re actually showing the game...Woo-hoo!
If only it were a more exciting pitcher/lineup...but hey, I’ll take it.
Oliver Perez is left handed. I’m sure that’s part of it.
hey, at least cabrera’s not in the leadoff spot.
Yeah, he’s hitting 6th!
Does it seem plausible to anyone that Molina is going to bat batter than Giambi would have—even with the platoon advantage? I guess part of the question is whether a day at 1st base is almost as good as a day off for Posada. If it’s not, then I don’t see the point of this.
That went well.
So you wait until Cano gets going and then you give him a day off so Betemit who is an inferior fielder, not a natural second baseman, who can’t hit right handed and walks at a lower rate then Cano can play. Also why isn’t Abreu playing. This lineup is too clever by half.
Well, that was suboptimal.
Great, Reyes is on with a double.
Great, Reyes is on with a double triple.
Met radio announcers chirping about how sharp Perez looks. Do we ever hit him?
I’m a preliminarily unhappy camper.
well, looks like the Yankees better score some runs today, which with this lineup looks like quite a task.
I think Perez is something like 4-1 in 5 games lifetime against the Yankees. How’d he manage to face them so many times??
Phew.
The ads for the fake statue of liberties are really creepy.
I have a feeling the Raz is going to Ponson these chumps.
This is going to be uuuuugly.
Perez has every chance to just blow up one of these innings. He’s Oliver Perez, after all.
at least Betemit is making him work.
I’d like for Kay to stop talking about Perez as some kind of big game pitcher. When you’re pitching a team with post-season aspirations, every game is a big game.
Other than the Betemit at bat he’s owned and even then he owned. Give him time though this head case should blow.
The Raz totally Ponsoned Church there.
Ooh, Kay snarking on the SNY guys.
I hate the NL.
Who is Scott Feldman? That’s not a baseball player name. That’s a high school English teacher name.
Take it easy, Reyes. It wasn’t that far inside.
eh, i think it makes sense to “punt” a game and rest all your players on the same day, instead of hurting your lineup every day by resting a single player. Of course, i’m drunk, so i don’t have the numbers to back this up.
I dislike kay, but i dug him snarking on the sny guys.
Be careful to reyes here Castillo has a piece of shit bat.
wait, i think i just had a moment of clarity. It’s better to rest guys w/ NL rules, b/c you can pull a bunch of double switches throughout the game.
It’s better to rest guys w/ NL rules, b/c you can pull a bunch of double switches throughout the game.
That’s not a terrible idea.
Molina having a hard time catching the ball today. Which is bad for a catcher.
Bit early to be hitting the sauce kronicfatigue? eh its Yanks Mets do it up buddy.
Kenny agrees with me. The Raz is Ponsoning today.
No, no, no. Don’t let Joba sit next to Ponson. He’ll give him diet tips.
Do not walk this stiff
Am I the only one deeply disturbed by seeing Joba and Snacks sitting together?
Also, don’t walk Castillo, you schmuck!
SHIT
That was ill fortune.

I think it matters what sort of margin your team has. If you’re dominating most games, it would make sense to rest guys one at a time, the thinking being that you will still win most of those games. If your margin is smaller, “punting” is probably better.
Dammit!
Fuck!
Son of a bitch what the fuck. Bullshit ass slapping homo hitter. Burn in hell cocksucker.
i was sipping on a mudslide before my guests came for the euro final. i think i forgot how strong i make these.
Oh damn, mudslides...It’s been years since I’ve had one. Siiiigh.
Deutschland Deutschland!
Who is Scott Feldman?
Is he Corey’s brother?
cocksucker
This is not an insult. Those who perform this service are heroes.
Also, that inning could have turned out a lot worse.
Is he Corey’s brother?
That would be awesome.
Is this Buck Martinez doing the color commentary on the TBS broadcast? I’m pretty sure he just said the ball flies farther at Shea when it’s a very humid day. What the fuck?

I believe I read somewhere that it’s true. Humid air has more water in it (obviously) and, because water is lighter than dry air, provides less resistance to baseballs.
Alan Horne left his start today after 2/3 of an inning. That’s not good news for those of us hoping to minimize Giese/Ponson’s existence on the roster.

I always thought the Horne dream was a little ambitious. I’m looking to Dan McCutcheon.
Game over… Ollie Perez will spin a the no-hitter that all Mets fans have been pining for. These two teams are the personification of mediocrity.

Is that bad news for Shawn Chacon?
Minimize the Ponson existence? I want him starting the all star game at the stadium.
Horne hadn’t been throwing all that well. He was not close to a call-up in any case. Both Horne and Marquez have been disappointing for the most part in AAA. Hopefully, McCutchen, who has been decent albeit inconsistent, can pick things up a bit.

Get off the ledge. Oliver Perez can give up six in an inning (as I saw him do this very season against the mighty Pirates) just as easily as throw three perfect innings.
I wouldn’t say I’ve been disappointed with how Horne has pitched, as he’s hardly pitched at all. I’ve been concerned that he’s had some injury issues. Marquez has definitely been disappointing.

I agree about Marquez, but you can hardly expect Horne to be lights-out, he missed a lot of time with his injury...This was what, his 4th start back?

Hey, the Dodgers got no-hit last night.
...and won.

No shit. After looking into it, though counter-intuitive, it seems to be true that humidity helps the ball travel further. My apologies to TBS.
Meh.
Come on, fella. Delgado is cooked.
Oliver Perez can give up six in an inning (as I saw him do this very season against the mighty Pirates) just as easily as throw three perfect innings.
My comment was tongue-in-cheek, but would it surprise anyone if this offense gets no-hit? This season has just been about the strangest I’ve ever seen…
oh man fuck Delgado to hell
I want to congratulate Oliver Perez on his perfect game today.
Fuck we’ve got a Rasner Beckett matchup next friday…
What an unusual day in the field for Jeter. Earlier in the game, he made a play on a ball on the 2b side of second. Now he misses a pop fly over his head.
I’m always content to split a series against an NL team with an under 500 record and a pitcher with an era over 5
I think Ponson stole Rasner’s baggie of pixie dust. And possibly ate it all. That has to be the explanation.
Delgado’s performance against the underbelly of this starting rotation does not bode well for the series against the Rays and the Red Sox.
I’m always content to split a series against an NL team with an under 500 record and a pitcher with an era over 5
Perez isn’t your usual 5 ERA starter, though. Some days, he’s a 3 ERA guy and some days he’s a 7 ERA guy. Most lousy pitchers are just lousy. A guy like Perez is different.
Sterling is such a drama queen.
“I don’t think they can take the chance - down three, I don’t know if they can win against Perez.”
That’s one thing for US to say - we’re not professional baseball announcers - we’re allowed to be whiny and pessimistic.
What a lame-o.
Perez is not going to cruise all day we’ll figure his ass out.
That’s one thing for US to say - we’re not professional baseball announcers - we’re allowed to be whiny and pessimistic.
Clearly you’ve never heard the White Sox crew.
Rasner has nothing. If he pitches like this against Boston, the game will be over by the third inning - if that.
I was wrong, by the way. The game I went to, Perez allowed seven runs in an inning, albeit with some help from Castillo. But he did walk Jose Bautista, Chris Gomez, and Adam Laroche in the inning. The Yankees have hitters at least that good.
Hah, but that’s supposed to be the absolute bottom of the barrell! No one is actually supposed to sound like the Hawk!
Darell Rasner appears to be in danger of having a Tyler Clippard/Matt DeSalvo type Yankee career.
Rasner hasn’t been particularly good, but he’s had some ill fortune. He has really only allowed three hard-hit balls and Wright’s drive wasn’t that impressive.
A Perez perfect game courtesy of the Yankee offense today. There, I said it.
Jesus Johnny what the fuck was that?
Dammit.
Amen
Yeah! No hitter for you, punk!
He’s Oliver Perez. He’s not Sandy Koufax. He can have his moments, but he can blow up, too.
I love when the Yankee hitters turn erratic pitchers into HOFers.
No no-hitter… Ugh.
Its getting very dark in Manhattan now. A log rain delay or a postponement would be welcome.
A hit! No no-hitter for you Mets fans! Hooray for moral victories!
Get him out of the stretch and suddenly he’s not Lefty Grove anymore.
Ahh, the telltale sound of wheels coming off.
Its raining in downotown NYC
Keep that one fair, Alex. 450-foot fouls are strikes.
Haha an idiot met fan threw back the foul ball thinking it was a dinger.
Dude, its a foul ball. You don’t have to throw it back.
Sterling, you ass.
Wait until it is fair or foul before you freak out, you dipshit!
Get him out of the stretch and suddenly he’s not Lefty Grove anymore.
Allow us to enjoy the small victories rather than misplace greater expectations on either of these teams.
Was Serling carrying on?? That one was foul by a mile.
Perez was like rocking around fucking with Jeter before that delivery looked like a balk to me.
Fucking anticlimax. When do we ever see the 7 era Perez instead of the under 3 era Perez?
Yep, what a tool. Was Serling carrying on?? That one was foul by a mile.
Great we let this bitch off the hook.
Now for an hour-and-a-half rain delay.
With Perez pitching like this, wouldn’t you love an hour and a half rain delay? Now for an hour-and-a-half rain delay.
Perez career era against us over 1 1/2 runs better then over all
Where’s the fucking thunder and lightning
Castillo has the ugliest swing in the majors.
The Yankees better either score some runs or take a loooong time in the top of the fifth, because this game becomes official in one half-inning (if the Mets are still leading).
Cano vs left handed pitchers batting 296 for career and 281 this year. Betemit is 235/269 so shy is he playing. I wonde if there is an equivalent right handed utility man we could swap Betemit for?
Yeah, come on, it is a bit easier to overpower people when the Yanks are intentionally sending out shitty hitters.
Our lineup 6 thru 9 is really dreadful
Maybe Girardi thinks we actually have a major league bench.
So through 4 2/3 Perez has already tied his highest strikeout total of the year. This from a guy who was one bad start from possibly being bounced from the rotation.
It’s also ridiculous to rip Santana for “just” pitching really well.
What dicks.
“The Mets fans have wanted Santana to pitch games like tonight.”
Really, Walding? They want him to strike out eight and allow one hit? You aure?
I also bet they’d prefer Santana to have a 5 ERA rather than a 3 ERA, right?
And Santana gets ripped for being defensive for having to apologize for “just” being a strong pitcher?
What dicks.
OK, when did NYC move to the tropics and why did no one tell me? These daily biblical deluges are getting tiresome.
It was tiresome, like, a week ago.
Did Kay just say Sherman punched Mr Met in the face one time?? That’s the smartest thing that man has done in his career.
I really wanted to see christian get on base and steal 3 bags there. Damn.
WHAT THE FUCK CAN WE GET A BREAK. go ball jesus fucking christ.
Sterling, you ASSHOLE!!!
How many times do you have to fuck up the call to STOP DOING IT?!?
True, but come on, it’s Chad Moeller - I don’t think getting a home run there would be a “break” it’d be a miracle.WHAT THE FUCK CAN WE GET A BREAK. go ball jesus fucking christ.
I’m excited to see Robertson.
If Girardi is going to play the lefty-righty game, shouldn’t Moeller have started considering he’s 3 for 10 with 3 homers off of Perez?
In other news, David Robertson gets to debut in a somewhat pressurized situation.
My god, this kid looks like he’s 10.
Seriously? Walding said he was 1 for 12 with 5 Ks.If Girardi is going to play the lefty-righty game, shouldn’t Moeller have started considering he’s 3 for 10 with 3 homers off of Perez?
And yeah, this is great to see Robertson here.
ROFL.
(at Perez falling on his butt).
I dunno, man, Robertson’s gotta be able to put away Perez faster than this, no?
Strikes please
Brian, those are Molina’s numbers against Perez.
BBs were the one hole in his resume
Seriously? Wow, what an odd mistake by Walding.Brian, those are Molina’s numbers against Perez.
Throw strikes, kiddo.
Funny how Cone was so sure that a BB was the result of his first career appearance and he ended up being very wrong.
Sooo… where’s that hammer curve we’ve been hearing so much about?
Great advice from Mel.
This is not the kind of debut lil David was looking for…
The national league can hit perez and we can’t. Their pitchers control Castillo and Delgado and we make them look like 5 years ago.
Damn.
Robertson gave up the same number of runs in his first big league inning as David Cone did in his.
First appearance jitters or just another minor league stud destined for mediocre numbers?
this blows so far
Hopefully Robertson settles down and shows that great curve we’ve all been hearing about. I don’t know why people were saying he throws 88, though. He was 89-92 that inning.
First appearance jitters or just another minor league stud destined for mediocre numbers?
Way to be positive
This team need two relievers, two starters and a bench to seriousy contend
Keep some of these fair arod jesus. Or just pop out after 2 pitches, thanks for coming.
Aaron Heilman warming up. There’s still hope!
Thank you, Sterling - this time, he played it cool.
Fool him twice, I guess!
were on the board!
Holy cow White-he smoked that one
Was that out of Shea Stadium? Wilson Betemit?
wow. Endy Chavez didn’t even move. That was awesome.
HERE WE GO BABY
Holy cow, indeed. He hit it out of the stadium!
Reyes really is a putz
wow reyes is a little brat
Betemit’s close to an 800 OPS. Not a lot of teams can say they have a bench player that good.
Come on, pinch-hit Giambi here!! Come ON!!
Betemit’s close to an 800 OPS
He also started off his season awfully, and was out for a while. right before he got hurt and since he’s been back Betemit has been quite good.
161 is right isn’t that why we have Molar the squad?
Look’s like Robertson’s not going to be any kind of answer
Molar the squad
For some reason, I read that as “Molar the squid,” which made it even funnier/more bizarre.
C’mon lil Dave, keep ‘em here!
Common pleaseee get some runs dropping the season series to the Mutts hurts me deep down.
Look’s like Robertson’s not going to be any kind of answer
I’m glad you can make those kinds of evaluations based on his first 2 innings of work in the majors.
They already pinch-hit him. I was thinking more have Giambi play first and move Jorge to behind the plate.161 is right isn’t that why we have Molar the squad?
And Robertson sounds pretty good to me, really. Seems more like nerves than anything else.
164. what kind of talk is that, common. its his 1st appearance
two of the hits he gave up were GBs and the other was a flare into left. He could’ve thrown more strikes but he wasn’t awful.
72 out of 106 pitches for strikes - WOW.
Don’t think that was what they wanted.
Good at-bat jason. really good.
Fuck this game. Seriously.
I don’t know why, but it’s really ticking me off.
Now we need a Wagner choke or we’ll be 4 and 5 against 3 NL mediocrities
Now we need a Wagner choke or we’ll be 4 and 5 against 3 NL mediocrities
You can’t just drop the 6-0 against Houston and San Diego. It makes you look disingenuous.
You can’t just drop the 6-0 against Houston and San Diego. It makes you look disingenuous.
bebop is actually Steve Lombardi.
bebop is actually Steve Lombardi.
If he were Steve Lombardozzi, I’d say sign him up. That guy couldn’t be a worse hitter than Molina, even at 48 years old.
Just checked the Red Sox box score...Dustin Pedroia has been on an absolute tear, it seems like he was where Cano is now about 2 weeks ago and all of a sudden he’s hitting over .300.
Drat.
Why did I remember Lombardozzi as a catcher? He was an infielder.
I didn’t realize Betemit was in the 5-hole today. Yikes.
I didn’t realize Betemit was in the 5-hole today. Yikes.
No complaining. He’s been the offense today.
That game could have gone better.
I have a good feeling about the Rangers series, though.
Why did I remember Lombardozzi as a catcher?
Maybe you’re thinking of Dominic Lombardozzi. He looks like a catcher.
Now that I think about it. He played first baseman Bill Skowron in “61*”. So, I got nothing.
ack.
fixed?
Well, what can you do? Sometimes you just run into an Oliver Perez…
Going into this series looking at the pitching matchups, I would have been happy with a split. Now that its done, I’m not.
Ehhh, it’s disappointing, but beating Pedro and Santana takes a bit of sting out of it. Rasner looked marginally better, Robertson looked decent, and Betemit’s homerun probably hasn’t landed yet. Yay for moral victories, I say!
Pretty much no Oliver Perez performance would surprise me, so I can’t find this very disappointing, just as I would have been pleased with but not impressed by a Yankees blowout.
girardi channeling a torre house money lineup tonight costs the yanks a split.
If The yankees can’t win 5 of 7 this week I’m demanding Roids, #25.
At least Sox lost too (to the ‘Stros, no less!).
Rally banana was not even going to try and get involved in Sunday’s game. Rally banana felt that it was futile to expend energy against Oliver ‘Sandy Koufax II’ Perez. So the rally banana told me, and I’m telling you.
