What a fucking joke.

Why not let Gardner steal before you bunt Wang?

wait, infield fly rule?

How stupid of a manager can you be?!??!?!  Tell Wang to fake the bunt on the first pitch and let Gardner steal.  THEN bunt.  Effing stupid.

or did Sterling explain the play wrong?

[102] Or why not just PH for Wang and turn the game over to the pen with a lead, instead of letting Wang give up the lead in the bottom of the 5th?

The guy on the mound tops out at 85 mph on his fastball and you don’t give the fastest guy in the park a chance to steal.

[106] Rightly or wrong, they’re committed to Wang for the time being.

or did Sterling explain the play wrong?

It was not a routine pop. Just about 10 ft in the air.

Man, Danny Murphy is just killing the Mets.

Hee hee. He is terrible.

[108] Well, giving away games because they would rather start the least valuable player in baseball instead of Hughes is wrong.

Ted- I just want to see him improve. I think he can. I feel he has.
Boy gottsta pitch.

Wang really isn’t the least valuable player in baseball. April Wang was. June Wang isn’t up to his previous high standards and is likely not as good as Hughes, but he’s a passable pitcher. And there is some reason to expect continued improvement.

Well, giving away games because they would rather start the least valuable player in baseball instead of Hughes is wrong.

He’s pitched fine to this point. His velocity is back. His location is coming along…slowly. But if he can get his mechanics back and keep the ball down more, then he belongs in the rotation. And Hughes is valuable in the pen (whereas Wang maybe isn’t). I am slightly encouraged by this start so far.

Some runs from the top of the order would be nice

[112] Don’t let my twisted attempt to read Girardi’s mind lead you to believe that I disagree with you about whether Hughes should start.

I just want to see him improve. I think he can. I feel he has.

I agree, BUT I think that the Yankees see a longer and more important role for Hughes in the organization, why not back that up with playing time?

[113] I also want to see him improve, but in low leverage situations that don’t involve costing the team games and hurting Hughes ability to get 150 IP.

The Yankees have been unlucky with balls in play in the last 3 innings.  Please end that.

Especially if he gives them a better chance of winning.

9 ground outs, 2 fly outs, 3 Ks—give him the 6th….

I’m so glad David Wright’s BABIP adjustment is comming *RIGHT NOW* FINALLY for once luck is on our side.

I actually think Wang could be a real assassin as a 2-3 inning guy out of the pen a couple times a week.

Should we really be THAT encouraged about a 5IP, 2ER start against a AAA lineup? The same lineup that has 1 ER the past two days combined, the same lineup that was 1 hit last night.

lead off walks are nice

[124] extra m in coming? when I saw it with Wang, I thought it was intentional.

Runs are even nicer.  Let’s get some.

Jeets Clay- I just want to win a 5 spot. I’m not the Wangers agent.
2 time 19 game winner is something Phil, has yet to achieve.

I actually think Wang could be a real assassin as a 2-3 inning guy out of the pen a couple times a week.

Maybe. He looked OK in relief when he came back. He used to have a lot of first inning problems, though, so I wonder if that would come into play in relief.

It was not a routine pop. Just about 10 ft in the air.

thanks.  Sterling made it sound pretty deliberate to have it drop, so I assumed it was higher up.

Should we really be THAT encouraged about a 5IP, 2ER start against a AAA lineup? The same lineup that has 1 ER the past two days combined, the same lineup that was 1 hit last night.

I thought the start against the Braves was pretty good, too. He would have gone longer in that one, if not for needing to be pinch-hit for.

Should we really be THAT encouraged about a 5IP, 2ER start against a AAA lineup? The same lineup that has 1 ER the past two days combined, the same lineup that was 1 hit last night.

I did say “slightly.”

[133]
Yeah, but the Braves lineup sucks, too.

120- That was a high leverage inning. The fifth.

Two walks in a row - think Joey G has a bunt left in him?

He used to have a lot of first inning problems, though, so I wonder if that would come into play in relief.

Since he’s returned from the DL this year, though, the trouble has usually been around the third or fourth inning. I also wonder if his stuff might play up a bit as a reliever.

Honestly, I think the Yankees are in an enviable position with Wang and Hughes. I think both are easily capable of being decent back of the rotation starters. Both also have a not inconsiderable chance of being quite a bit better than that moving forward.

OK, if Livan is going to walk the guys up top they MUST make him pay.

Productivo!

I thin Wang has been pretty good today. The walks suck, but he’s only given up 3 hits in 5 innings and 2 of them were ground balls.

I just think that the Yanks are messing with Hughes, and if they really see him as having a future in the Yankees, and a legitimately good pitcher they need to start him. I also think that Hughes has shown that he really deserves it.

Great baserunning. lazy CF defense.

Oh good, Robinson “GIDP” Cano coming up.

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but Morgan and Phillips are right about IBBing A-Rod, not that it’s a hard decision.

Take a strike, Robby.

Cano should just leave the bat on his shoulder right now

I also think that Hughes has shown that he really deserves it.

I think Wang might have shown that he has a smidge of potential, too. Hughes is thriving in the pen, and someone is going to get hurt eventually and Hughes can step in.

144- It happens.

[144] Even a stopped clock is right twice per day.

That was suboptimal

Aaarrrggghhh

Cano is the biggest reason they’ll lose this game.

What’s it going to take for Girardi to move him down in the order? Sheesh.

Cano, you turd.  Unbelievable.  So predictable, it’s sad.

What a sorry douchebag.

That’s terrible hitting.

FUCK YOU ROB

Nothing you can do about that. Hard hit ball up the middle.

Hughes is thriving in the pen, and someone is going to get hurt eventually and Hughes can step in.

Yeah, but what if the Yankees defy the odds and no one gets injured? Then the Yankees have to do something with Hughes, because if they want him as a starter next year they need to get him innings.

With Hernandez walking the house, you really need to lay off any pitch you can’t elevate in that situation.

They’re going to lose this game.  And it will be most upsetting.

How is that terrrible hitting? He took a fastball away and hit a one hopper HARD up the middle? If it is 5 feet towards the middle two runs score. He didn’t pull off, he smacked it up the middle.

Nothing you can do about that. Hard hit ball up the middle.

He could have waited for a pitch that he could elevate.

Oh good, Robinson “GIDP” Cano coming up.

Sterling said the same thing!

154 was a pretty good almost haiku.

Livan is throwing 85 and as many balls as strikes and the Yankees have mustered 3 runs in 6 innings. Pathetic.

Why is Cano hitting in front of Posada?  There’s no need to “split the lefties” with Matsui on the bench.

At what point do we start to actually believe in teh unclutch?  It sure looks like not hitting with men on base is a skill and Robbie has it….

Then the Yankees have to do something with Hughes, because if they want him as a starter next year they need to get him innings.

Joba is going to have to get skipped some. That’ll help Hughes push the innings up.

Yep, loss written all over this one.

Dannux- Its just that RC has been blowing rodents for some time now.
My Katt called it too.

I’m staying positive, but it’s frustrating to see this team not get as much out of their talent as they should.

Then the Yankees have to do something with Hughes, because if they want him as a starter next year they need to get him innings.

Yeah, but if the Yankees want to win the WS this year, it would be great to have Hughes as a dominant force in the pen. Will it slow down his development a little? Maybe. But he moves into the rotation next year if Andy retires, and he will have a lot of experience pitching in the majors in big spots. It’s not the worst thing that ever happened if the Yanks have 6 good starters next year and then Andy retires.

If Wang sucks it up some more, than it isn’t so hard to move Hughes into the rotation

Why is Cano hitting in front of Posada?  There’s no need to “split the lefties” with Matsui on the bench.

The Yankees everyday lineup contains three or four switch hitters. It’s almost impossible not to have lefties and righties alternating.

The Yankees will probably shift Joba and Hughes to the pen in the playoffs (if they get there) no matter what they do with them now.

In what universe does it make sense to sacrifice with Fernando Martinez and Brian Schneider coming up?

Hey Jonathan, can you please stop with the fucking loss shit?
I don’t tread there. Nor should you.

Throw strikes!

In what universe does it make sense to sacrifice with Fernando Martinez and Brian Schneider coming up?

He’s the buntingest manager in baseball, by a lot. All my Met fan friends hate it so much.

Good pitch sequence.

Martinez is not ready to be in the majors.

Damn I hate interleague games

this is one time I don’t mind the “three pitchers in an inning” tactic

Hey Jonathan, can you please stop with the fucking loss shit?

No reverse jinxy allowed?

Excellent, Phil. Ruthlessly efficient.

Huh? why take Swisher out here.

[175]  I will be livid if they start Pettitte and Wang over Joba in the playoffs.

Is Bruney allowed to pitch back to back days yet?

[184] You’re just trying to make up for last night’s no-no demolition job.

It’s a crime they let him reach the seventh inning.

I will be livid if they start Pettitte and Wang over Joba in the playoffs.

Word.

[186] Keep the better defenders (Melky and Gardner) in the game? Also, Swisher’s spot in the order was the furthest away from coming to the plate, so it gives them the greatest chance to avoid Hughes batting.

Forget Bruney. I’m giving Hughes the seventh and the eighth.

Huh? why take Swisher out here.

Double switch, no?  Otherwise, Phil bats fourth this inning.

[192] And by the time that does happen, it’s maybe time to PH for him anyway.

It’s a crime they let him reach the seventh inning.

I liked their at bats. I think Livan has done a good job. He’s located the ball really well down and away against lefties, plus he got lucky on some hard hit balls at outfielders. Sometimes it just happens. Just now that was another line drive at an outfielder

I will be livid if they start Pettitte and Wang over Joba in the playoffs.

They are going to have innings cap issues with Joba. I would put Hughes in the rotation over Pettitte or Wang now. I just find it hard to believe that Pettitte’s veteran-ness won’t get him a start unless he absolutely sucks.

184- allowed but not approved. Lets just finish these guys and move on.

[193] I was wondering because Hughes will now be due up 3rd in the top of the 8th, but I guess they could just tell him to stand 5 feet off the plate and not swing no matter what.

I hope this isn’t the start of another week long offensive disappearance

Way back in the 20th century, Bill James wrote the first essential book about baseball managers. Chris Jaffe has just written the second.

John Brattain Memorial Fund

The Hardball Times has set up a memorial fund for John Brattain's family. He left behind a wife and two teenage daughters.

Four years ago, I found from personal experience how generous the online community can be to its own in their hour of need. I am now literally begging you to be even more generous than you were to me.
