Still no Damon.  Damn.

Anyone catch the ESPN interview with Mo that was just on?  I love that man.  I may actually cry when he retires.

You think he’s going to retire before you die?

Castillo’s .373 OBP boggles my mind.  I can’t believe any major league pitcher would walk a guy who, at the very worst, is going to slap the ball past an infielder.

You think he’s going to retire before you die?

DaPuj, never forget that Jonathan is an entity armed with lightning bolts.

He could still live to 100 and I’d still bet on Mo.

I fail to understand your paltry 100.

Zues is immortal.

(It’s pretty cool, though, that he roots for the Yankees.)

I just saw this at LoHud:

UPDATE, 6:59 p.m.: Jesus Montero just hit his first homer for Trenton. He connected against Reading’s Mike Stutes at Waterfront Park. Ball went out to center.

Hitting a ball out of center field in Trenton is an absolute display of power. Awesome.

Sox lost tonight, Wang picks up his first win tonight.

I can’t believe any major league pitcher would walk a guy who, at the very worst, is going to slap the ball past an infielder.

Blows my mind too. I know he’s small and all, but it’s gotten ridiculous. When Burnett walked him at NYS in the earlier season I nearly lost it.

Give Castillo some credit, his O-Swing% since 2002 is 12.1%, but yeah, until he hits more than 5 HRs (which he has only done once) they should pretend it is batting practice after 2 or 3 balls.

Livan can’t be 34

Jeter smokes a double.  Swisher bunts.  I don’t get it.

Jeter missed a HR by a couple of feet.

Why is Swisher trying to bunt in the 1st inning?

Livan can’t be 34

That’s in Cuban Years, so he is actually 68 in real people years.

Why is Swisher trying to bunt in the 1st inning?

because bunting is always the right answer.

Teixeira takes the outside pitch to LF and plates two!

Murphy is looking for his true Yankee moment.

You can’t anticipate it unless it’s really obvious.

Couldn’t have said it any better myself, Joe Morgan.

Daniel Murphy is the worst player in New York.

Now that Berroa is gone.

That’s in Cuban Years, so he is actually 68 in real people years.

Fixed. Realized the wording made that seem offensive.

They might have had Cano picked off there.  I wouldn’t mind seeing that replay again.

Morgan: Most hitters hit better without runners in scoring position. Except those do hit better, because they’re RBI men.

Daniel Murphy is the worst player in New York.

Somewhere, Angel Berroa just breathed a sigh of relief.

That’s the last time I answer the phone before hitting “submit.”

Someone should explain to Jon Miller that it’s “O.P.S.” not “Ops”.

I appreciate Cano’s creativity in turning a double play there

Wang looks like crap so far….

Let’s hope Wright grounds into a Jeter

Ugh. is this one of those games in which Wang has no fastball command?

Those fastballs are all up.

! That’s a nice slider. And well located, and set up by a two seamer in. Nice job.

Someone should explain to Jon Miller that it’s “O.P.S.” not “Ops”.

Really? I always pronounce (think) it as “ops.”  Or is his misunderstanding more profound?

“Someone should explain to Jon Miller that it’s “O.P.S.” not “Ops”.”

I doubt many people spell it out, if that’s the issue.  It’s like the Latin “ops, opis” - “power”, “abundance of might”.

that’s what, three very wild deliveries already?
nice job getting out of the inning, but I see no green shoots…

I would love to see a 1-2-3 inning from Wang this start.

I would love to see a 1-2-3 inning from Wang this start.

Martinez-Schneider-Castillo seems like a pretty solid candidate.

I’ve always referred to its as O.P.S.

I guess if I heard someone call it Ops I’d assume they didn’t know what the stat was.

Speaking, of OPS, they are showing league average OPS. I’ve never seen that before, although I don’t watch many games on ESPN. Anyway, good job by them.

Do you say “w.O.b.a.”?  I say “on-base %”, certainly, but e.g. “last season he opsed foo”.

Really? I always pronounce (think) it as “ops.” Or is his misunderstanding more profound?

Huh. I always pronounce it as “oh pee ess”, not “awps” or whatever.

Gardner uppercuts an awful lot.

Not sure I wanted Wang on the bases anyway.

Do you say “w.O.b.a.”?  I say “on-base %”,

how often have you pulled out the wOBA stat in a convo?

I use on-base % as well.

“how often have you pulled out the wOBA stat in a convo?”

All the time, in my head.

“Gardner uppercuts an awful lot.”

Hope he doesn’t start swinging for the fences.

Wow. I just saw the series promo for a show on HBO that…well, it was Onionesque. Really REALLY surprised ESPN took the ad.

somehow “weighted on base average” feels less awkward than “on base percentage plus slugging percentage,” but I’ve never had a reason to say anything out loud. (“ops” as in “black ops”, by the way.)

I would love to see a 1-2-3 inning from Wang this start.

Yeah, especially snce the Mets had gone 1-2-3 in 18 of the previous 23 innings coming into this game.

Yikes, even Joe Morgan is questioning playing A-Rod this often.

“Every time you go into a joint, you never know what’s going to happen when you come back out.” - Dr. Steve

Nice to see Wang bringing a couple presents to the party.

I guess if I heard someone call it Ops I’d assume they didn’t know what the stat was.

That’s my take on it, and Jon Miller calling it that would prove that theory. He could just ask Joe Morgan what it means, but I assume Morgan response would be “its a stat Billy Beane invented.”

[49], [50] - woosh.

Huge inning coming up for the Wanger. Gotta crush any momentum they might be getting.

Woosh? High German for STFU? Ja?

3 hard hit balls in that inning and nothing to show for it.

Livan is going right at them, and the Yanks are getting great cuts. They just didn’t drop.

Suboptimal walk.

About Nady…

Does his season ending surgery open up a spot on the 40-man?  If so, have they filled it?

Moot.

Is that Philips babbling between the 2 Sunday Night icons?

Just what the Wanger ordered!

58- Yes. part two, I don’t know.

Sorry, it’s “whoosh” in English, no?  I meant, “huh?”

I really hope that in the Moneyball movie the reason Morgan hates Beane so much is revealed.

I really want to see Brad Pitt as Billy Beane kick Billy Dee Williams as Joe Morgan in the nuts and then kill his dog. With stats. Or something like that.

Morgan and Williams are surprisingly similar looking, at least enough for a Hollywood resemblance.

Wow, Jon Miller, just stop.

[58] and [62] Was Nady ever put on the 60 day DL? I have heard conflicting reports on that.

Re-huh, I meant no runs. CMW returns to form, I’m delighted.

[64] I think Sony squashed the film this week, unfortunately.  Otherwise, it would be a great scene.

It’s like Cano thinks you get points for just putting it in play—I swear to god it looked like he was trying to hit it exactly there….

Miller making Phillips and Morgan sound less stupid than they usually take the opportunity to demonstrate.

I think Sony squashed the film this week, unfortunately.  Otherwise, it would be a great scene.

I heard. For some reason I can only imagine the scene with Brad Pitt reprising his role as Mickey the Pikey from Snatch. Which would be even more entertaining.

It’s like Cano thinks you get points for just putting it in play—I swear to god it looked like he was trying to hit it exactly there….

He should not bat 5th with his approach at the plate. Why would any pitcher ever throw him a strike?

morgan:  the only place for jeter to move to is left field.  it’s the easiest OF position to play

phillips:  Well, I said left field or right field b/c for yankee stadium, right field is so much shorter

morgan:  “the reason why right field is harder to play is b/c the ball curves”.

WHAT??  the ball curves differently to right than left?  What percentage of at bats are by right handed batters?  could it be that that slightly higher rate could make morgan right?  in the sense that the balls that curve are the ones off the end of the bat, and that would be righties slapping it to rf.  i doubt it.  he’s gotta be wrong, no?  RF is harder b/c of the throw to third base, but jeter has a good arm.

Moneyball Movie?... I love it. Garrison Kiellor as Bill James.

bases clogged

Discount Mets jerseys. Sign me up. I want a Kranepool.

Nice job backing up the play by Gardner.

Come on Wang get out of this inning

that’s a situation where you should pitch carefully..

Farnsworth.  Get the ball down, Wang.

Bad pitching to the bottom of the lineup.

Take. Wang. Out.

Can we have Hughes now please?

If Castillo scores here I’ll be sick.

More runs…

should they have walked castillo to get to the pitcher?

More runs, please.

That’s so annoying that they had Arod in like that when they were pitching Castillo away. It doesn’t make sense. If he can get the bunt down perfectly, then so it goes.

I hope Cashman and Girardi realize that Wang is struggling to hold down a AAA lineup and its time to remove him from the rotation before he has to face AL lineups again.

should they have walked castillo to get to the pitcher?

Well, you should be pitching him really tough, at least. Certaily not meatballs at the belt.

Another inning for Wang. I’m being Torresque but I don’t care. We gotta build this lad back up.

Castillo’s hit was a seeing-eye single? I don’t know how mad you can be about that.

I hate that stadium.

And the Yankees offense goes to the prevent defense.

[93] Is it really something that HAS to be done this year and can only be done with him starting instead of in low leverage situations out of the pen, say the innings Tomko normally pitches? (My plan would involve Hughes starting, Wang in the pen in Tomko’s role, Tomko DFA’d, and Melancon in the pen taking Hughes innings)

Ok, time to manufacture one with Brett out there.

I don’t know about seeing eye.  He slapped it past A-Rod, who was playing bunt.  The ball wasn’t crushed, but it was also a big fat meatball.

“Livan has had them at his mercy.”

Miller is such an idiot. The Yankees have been very unlucky with BABIP.

Way back in the 20th century, Bill James wrote the first essential book about baseball managers. Chris Jaffe has just written the second.

John Brattain Memorial Fund

The Hardball Times has set up a memorial fund for John Brattain's family. He left behind a wife and two teenage daughters.

Four years ago, I found from personal experience how generous the online community can be to its own in their hour of need. I am now literally begging you to be even more generous than you were to me.
