AJ since since May 27:

ERA: 2.17
K/9: 9.9
HR/9: .93

(The one negative: BB/9: 5.3)

You can get away with one TTO blemish if you’re really good at the other two. This was long the secret to Tiger Wang’s success. A.J. would be phenomenal if he didn’t ever walk anybody. But if he strikes lots of guys out and doesn’t give up a lot of homers, he’s still mighty good.

if he strikes lots of guys out and doesn’t give up a lot of homers, he’s still mighty good.

We agree.
Please have him do that.

Checking out the Boston score is an exercise in frustration.  I’m putting their scores back in the box with Schrodinger’s cat.

I wish the Yankees still had Javier Vazquez.

I wonder if Jeter’s respiratory illness is Tuberculosis.

were Gardner’s first 3 ABs last night any better, results aside, then that one?

Wouldn’t the flu be one of those things that, if it’s keeping you out of the line-up, ought to make them send you home rather than have you sit on the bench, infecting everyone else?

Its alsmot a waste to have Cone and Leiter YES’s two best announcers doing the same game.  I wish one or the other would do every game.

Wouldn’t the flu be one of those things that, if it’s keeping you out of the line-up, ought to make them send you home rather than have you sit on the bench, infecting everyone else?

If it’s flu, he should be on droplet isolation. Of course, any virus worse than a cold is often called “flu,” no matter what it is.

Jeter wants to pull a Willis Reed (or a Mickey Mantle) tonight.

Jeter wants to pull a Willis Reed (or a Mickey Mantle) tonight.

Get drunk and feel up a stewardess?

Ah, it’s one of THOSE innings.

Oh, no it wasn’t.  Take it back.

That’s a damn good Yankee fan.

Ha ha ha

Inning could have gone better. At least Redding through a lot of pitches.

Er, threw.

That’s a damn good Yankee fan.

explain

I was going crazy with all those wasted opprotunities last night until we finally broke the game wide open.  Wasted a chance to put a hurt on a bad pitcher there in a very big game with Wang going tomorrow.

If AJ keeps up this strike-out rate, I’ll be happy.

Cano hitting 225 this year with RISP, 265 for career.  That is not good.

Cano hitting 225 this year with RISP, 265 for career.  That is not good.

But it does sound like he should be leading the team in that category, doesn’t it?

WP 19:Cano hit a foul pop and Wright reached in to catch it but a burly Yankee fan pulled a Barfman and got all pumped up.

Ah, thanks.  Cool.

Gameday has Burnett consistently at 95-96

He gets pumped up to play teams from NY.

Let’s make this game a blowout (for us that is) to make Wang’s game tomorrow less of agonizing.

cross out “of”

The subway series, the biggest sports event of the year, and only six registered readers?

Wang’ll be fine tomorrow. He was great against AAA teams on his rehab assignment and have you seen the Mets lineup this weekend?

Is Redding related to Youklis?

Cool. Cleared the pitcher’s spot. And A.J. is a .500 hitter, so I smell runs.

A.J. really shouldn’t swing until two strikes.

And three balls.

This is a pretty good AB by Burnett. Better than anything I’ve ever seen from Berroa.

That inning started off not so great, but it ended up kind of well, for an inning in which no runs were scored. Redding’s over 40 pitches already.

Better than anything I’ve ever seen from Berroa.

Don’t go crazy heaping the praise on him, rLr.

Don’t go crazy heaping the praise on him, rLr.

Look, he isn’t C.C., but he’s not Wil Nieves, either. That dude, during his Yankee tenure, was the least capable position player I’ve ever seen try to hit.

I don’t have a problem with that walk.

Wil Nieves, a.k.a. the Argument For Berroa.

Nieves was with the Yankees for at least half a season and I don’t think he had even one hit (fair or foul, hit or out) that could have been described as “hard.” He was extraordinary.

extraordinary

I like your etymologically acceptable use of this word.

That’s not an easy play by Melky. His versatility has been a real boon to the Yankees. I don’t think Damon makes that play.

If we have to worry about driving up Redding’s pitch count what does that say for our offense?

If we have to worry about driving up Redding’s pitch count what does that say for our offense?

That they’re good at driving up pitch counts and that, for all that Redding is a mediocrity, the Mets middle relievers are likely worse.

I am not okay with that walk.

I remember Nieves hitting a double once and the topper was he never threw anyone out either.  Of course before Gardner’s hiatus from starting I had seen him hit one ball hard this year.

rLr, how about that walk?

No that walk was not good.

I am not okay with that walk.

I’m relieved to hear you say it.

Is it too early to remind the team that unlike say Martis and Stammen, Redding is not a good pitcher.

Kay was talking sense about this Mets lineup. There are two walkable guys. Not that one should strive to walk Wright or Sheffield, but it’s not a catastrophe if one does. Walking absolutely anybody else, that’s a big no-no. Especially Argenis Reyes.

I like how Cone seems to know his history.

Hit it too well, Gardner. Next time, bloop one.

That was a clout.

yay Swisher!

Radio was doing a station break during the home run.

Like that line about lawyers-a good start

I repeat, I like Swisher hitting 2nd.

NOTHIN’ BUT NET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Olney says Tex slumping since he stopped juicing

Rodriguez and Teixeira have just missed homers today. Got under the ball just a tad.

One is not enough….yet

The Yankees hit the ball hard that inning. Redding is lucky to only be down one.

I like that not-walk.

Do not walk Reyes, you goofy looking knucklehead.

This be the break-it-open-inning

That is nice work, Alistair Jehosephat.

A.J. should definitely stand for “Alistair Jehosephat.”

I almsot forgot what a brief but forgettable Yankee Redding was.

How amny dipshit pitchers are going to shut us down?  I realize Martis, Stammen and Volstad are very good pitchers but Redding is not he sucks.

I am so sick of hearing about how mediocre/terrible pitchers are having good games.  No they’re not.  Its us.  What’s with Posada’s hitting lately?

So high pitch count on Redding but only one run?  What’s the dealy-oh?  Redding gave up like 6 runs in one inning in his brief stint with the Yankees and that was what, 3 years ago?

I realize Martis, Stammen and Volstad are very good pitchers but Redding is not he sucks.

Martis is not in the same class as Volstad.  Stammen seems like he could develop into a nice pitcher, though.

Sheff against A.J. scares me a wee bit.

The NYY method for driving up pitch counts has long seemed to include avoiding the actual scoring of runs - that’s not supposed to happen until the pitcher’s entirely worn out.

Perhaps, like all the pitching woes, it can be explained as a NYS effect?

Perhaps all other ballparks, esp. this one, seem impossible to the team after NYS?

It would be cool to see Pena pull a Gardner and yank one out down the line for his first.

Last 19 games Posada hitting 212

I thought AJ liked to hit.  Between the walks and the suckitude at the plate, what is AJ actually bringing to this game?

After 4 2/3 Redding has already matched his season high in strikeouts.

bloops not falling in today Bret.

Eight in a row put down by Redding?

Maybe the Yankees, when looking at projected starters, don’t bother to look at scouting reports if the pitcher seems crappy.  This might explain the great performances against guys like Santana, and the farnsy ones against guys like Redding.

I thought AJ liked to hit.  Between the walks and the suckitude at the plate, what is AJ actually bringing to this game?

A no-hitter?

I wonder what % of the pitchers we’ve faced since Boston have overperformed against us.  Theoretically it should be well under 50%

Nice of the offense to ease off of the pitch-count building so that Redding, after being over 60 in the 3rd, will still pitch into the sixth.

Even Pelfrey was basically unlucky last night against us.

Oh Melky-outstanding.

Damon would have missed the ball and crashed into the wall breaking three bones on that play.

VERY nice curve.

Ooo, Leiter thinks so too.

Pitcher’s duel and Redding just seems oxymoronic.

Pistols at dawn, bebop?
And t first to mention Stamen gets… dammit, too late.  It was going to be: first prize, three broken bones.  Second prize…

OK, a walk on a close pitch to get to Redding is acceptable.

But 2-0 to the pitcher is not acceptable.  Freakin’ throw strikes.

‘Goofball’ is a perfect one word description of Swisher.

That *IS* stat-padding, right?

A no-hitter?

Dooooooooode!!!!  Why did you say it!?  Why!?

[94] Trying to tell us something?

You aren’t putting make-up on and robbing banks, are you Jonathan?

This is the Tim Redding we all expected to see, no?

Posado wanted in on the stat padding.

POSADO!!!!!!

John Brattain Memorial Fund

The Hardball Times has set up a memorial fund for John Brattain's family. He left behind a wife and two teenage daughters.

Four years ago, I found from personal experience how generous the online community can be to its own in their hour of need. I am now literally begging you to be even more generous than you were to me.
