FIRSTIES!!

i owned you allllll!  Anyway, give em hell jobbba!

8:05 starts are soooo much later than 7:05 starts. They spent the first twenty minutes on MLB network talking about an error Hanley Ramirez made.

Too bad nothing cool happened in F-Mart’s AB.

Any news on posada?

It’s funny, b/c didn’t Yankee games start at 8 PM well into the 80’s?

I know when I was little (1970’s) it was an 8PM start, and never ran into the 11 o’clock news.

I can’t watch this game, going to see the YeahYeahYeahs please root the boys on to victory.

This makes me smile.  Go Melky!

Rain delay?  Boooooo.

Really? Son of a gun.

does it even rain in Texas? (yes it does, but who cares, I’m bitching)

At least an hour?  =(

Hoadley, what kind of jobs you looking for?

At this point anything. But preferably something on the production side of the film/tv industry.

Hoadley, what kind of jobs you looking for?

Cage fighting, bear-baiting, temporary clerical.

Is there a 140 lbs weight class in cage fighting? I’m surprisingly powerful.

Check your PMs, I’ll give you my email address for your resume.

Check your PMs, I’ll give you my email address for your resume.

Hey, send that my way!

Well the game definitely be played, or is this “delay” some kind of massive tease?

You want to send me your resume?  Are you in LA in the biz?

20. I’m a screenwriter in New York looking for work. Do you outsource?

21—only to India.

I tried telling Met fans I know that Sheffield quite a good signing for them. They thought I was crazy. .419 on base right now.

Wow, I don’t know what key words you guys typed, but there are some way hot girls on the match.com ads.

it was probably the firsties.

Or LA.

MLB Extra Innings is just blue screening me for the rain delay. Anyone getting the local broadcast, or gameday audio or anything ? Any idea whether/when they play ball ?

Gameday weather says it’s mostly cloudy, not raining.

It’s not raining yet, but the radar screen they flashed showed a big storm on the horizon.

Everyone’s in the biz here?  No wonder the clamor for the business side, versus stats.

Can you guys start work on better rain delay programming, Everyone Loves Raymond sucks.

Ham:

UPDATE, 8:43 p.m.: This is the dumbest rain delay ever since it hasn’t rained. They should have played a few innings. But that would have screwed up the starters, so this is better. The tarp is just going down now.

I can’t do anything about Everybody Loves Raymond.  I don’t have that kind of relationship with Ray Romano.

I am in favor of this rain delay. This means I’ll get to see most of the game.

The Yankees have been in charge of many a dumb rain delays.

Just eyeballing the radar animation, it looks like the back edge of this system is like another 1.5 hours away. That would mean like 2, 2.5 hours until gametime, and a total delay of maybe. I wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t play.

[34] is that in response to [19]?

Another 1.5 won’t be that late Texas time, would it?  Are they an hour behind, or two?

Central

This makes me smile.  Go Melky!

Interestingly enough, if you include all MLB, Mike Cameron tops that list. Still, I think things are working out just fine with Melky in CF and not trading him for Cameron (if that could have happened) is turning out to be a good move.

V, [35] was just a general comment on where things stand with the delay.

Oh, and the game is 2 hours AHEAD for me. It’s only 6pm here. I may fall asleep drunk (again), before they get the game in. It’s 8pm where they are.

especially since if the yankees are close to their payroll limit, they’d probably want to save whatever room they have to possibly add a reliever, instead of being maxed out with Cameron.

of course, i was very much in favor of adding Cameron.

sooo…it wasn’t actually “dumb” then, right?

LA firsties. Scarlett Johansson.

Why aren’t they just calling it?

The best part about local weatherman Pete Abraham is that it’s HAILING there right now.  So the blue skies 40 minutes ago don’t matter.  At all.

UPDATE, 9:01 p.m.: The rain is here. People be scattering.

Also, I don’t get this.  Is it like an ethnic thing?  Did Pete hear Bruce Springsteen talking like that?  F**k the heck?

What do you think the beat writers do during long rain delays?  Work ahead on that feature they’ve been struggling with?  Chase quotes in the locker room?  Or just get drunk and play cards?

Wank.

Does it look like they’re going to play?  If not, presumably a DH tomorrow.  Which means we’ll get to see how Wang, uh, performs.

Yankees:Angels::Rays:Indians

It’s kind of funny.

I seem to remember him talking about making these update posts from his iPhone. So he’s probably got a beer in one hand and typing with his nacho hand in between licking canned cheese off his fingers.

Oooh, Wieters is going to be called up on Friday.  So the O’s will at least have one interesting thing going for them.

We can always assume reporters are just drinking and playing cards! They write about baseball, the greatest occupation in the world!

I hope they don’t call the game.

Oooh, Wieters is going to be called up on Friday.  So the O’s will at least have one interesting thing going for them.

That’s selling Markakis short. I think he’s a hell of a fun player.

I hope they play purely for selfish reasons, not that many games are on regular broadcast.

I hope well for Wieters, I always like catchers.

That’s selling Markakis short. I think he’s a hell of a fun player.

Yeah, I agree.  And honestly, Brian Roberts and Adam Jones are also pretty fun, in a huge pain-in-my-ass kind of way. I guess it really is just their atrocious pitching.

“So he’s probably got a beer in one hand and typing with his nacho hand in between licking canned cheese off his fingers.”

Before or after wanking?

This is getting disgusting, forgive me.

Brian Roberts and Adam Jones are also pretty fun, in a huge pain-in-my-ass kind of way. I guess it really is just their atrocious pitching.

I like Roberts, too. On the other hand, they employ Ty F. Wigginton, one of my least favorite players. At least they no longer have Cabrera. I couldn’t stand watching that guy pitch.

It doesn’t sound promising:

UPDATE, 9:08 p.m.: Now it’s hailing and raining like somebody turned on a fire hose.

56- Baltimore is shaping into a real team down the road. Should be interesting if they can accomplish anything in the AL East.

How much pitching do they have on the horizon? Liz and who else?

Trading Maine for Benson looks so, so dumb in retrospect. It looked pretty dumb at the time, too, of course.

Not looking good… it appears that a giant rainbow-colored blob will be smothering the field in its cotton-candy-ness soon:

[57] Think Jalapenos

Still watching the radar (we don’t get Raymond for another hour here), and there’s a nasty storm cell about 20 miles to the southwest just stalled, waiting for them to take the tarp off. I think they don’t play tonite as it doesn’t look like this thing is blowing through (I know less about meteorology than I do about baseball, but that’s my hunch).

I’m looking at radar that doesn’t think that second front will get there for another 4 hours at least.  They could get the game in.

Since nothing’s happening, I’ll reask the following dumb question:
Basic random question - the pitch bounces, then: the batter doesn’t swing -> ball, the batter swings -> strike, the batter hits the ball over the center-field wall/pops up ->?

rLr, why do we hate Wigginton so?

rLr- I never worry about pitching down the road TOO much, I look for young good hitters to form a team around.

rLr, why do we hate Wigginton so?

Irrational reasons. He’s goofy-looking and clumsy. He doesn’t take pitches. He doesn’t run the bases well. He doesn’t play good defense. And his head is too big.

I also hate Rod Barajas for no specific reason.

65-

I’m pretty sure the ball’s in play.

Twins just took the lead.

LoHud:

UPDATE, 9:35 p.m.: The rain is starting to abate and they’re getting ready to pull the tarp. Looks like there will be baseball, albeit very late into the night.

didn´t Vlad hit a HR of a ball that bounced a couple of years ago? I think it counted. Also, even if the ball bounces, if you swing and make contact ant the ball goes foul, you don´t strike out. I guess if you make contact it counts as any other batted ball.

The good question is, if the ball bounces midway and then crosses the strikezone, is it a strike? Not that any ump would call it like that.

Today is the anniversary of Harvey Haddix’s 13-inning masterpiece.
I nearly cry every time I think about it.

“if the ball bounces midway and then crosses the strikezone, is it a strike?”

No.  By rule it can’t touch the ground before passing through the strike zone.

Otherwise we’d be playing cricket…

Thanks, Fgas.

We are almost at June, and Lester has an ERA over 6, as does Kazmir. Who saw that coming?

We are almost at June, and Lester has an ERA over 6, as does Kazmir. Who saw that coming?

Justin Morneau, it seems.

I know some people warned that Lester had a big workload last year. Is there any reason for Kazmir to have sucked so badly?

“didn´t Vlad hit a HR of a ball that bounced a couple of years ago?”

Ichiro and Vlad have both hit balls that bounced first, and Vlad has hit a homerun that way. Even though I don’t like the Angels, I hope he comes back healthy.

Sweet.. we get to watch The Office before the first pitch.

By now, this would be like the 8th inning in a regular game, so Joba is gonna start out like a pitching monster.

UPDATE, 9:49 p.m.: First pitch scheduled for 10:30 ET. I will blog into the night, so stick around.

Yeesh.

I know some people warned that Lester had a big workload last year.

Wow, Lester pitched 210 innings last year, why the heck are we babying out young pitchers?

Is there any reason for Kazmir to have sucked so badly?

he’s small and has always been kindof fragile.  his velocity is down 2 MPH from 2008, maybe he’s wearing down?

or maybe it’s just a bad month for both of those guys….

Kazmir babip is .361…and throwing a lot more sliders this year.

his velocity is down 2 MPH from 2008

And for all the blustering about Hughes and his velocity, Kazmir was never a hard thrower. Not he has a little issue and he’s thowing 89-90 instead of 91-92 and he’s getting hit really hard. I think that’s a legit criticism of guys who sit 91-92 mph. That said, I’m really psyched to see Hughes sitting 93-94.

Not=Now

Wow, Lester pitched 210 innings last year, why the heck are we babying out young pitchers?

so they don’t have Lester’s 2009 the next season?

i apologize if i missed any sarcasm on your part.

Lester had a 4.51 FIP before this game.  .386 BABIP, wow.

Kazmir was never a hard thrower.

Kazmir = LHP.  I think that makes up some of the difference.  Parents, be sure to make sure your kids come out left-handed.

Or put a catcher’s glove on their hand.

I don’t understand shows like Chopped on the Food Network, what’s the point of a cooking show were you handicap the chefs/cooks so that they don’t make the best food, but passable food with ingredients they have no idea what to do with?

If they aren’t giving them a couple of days to learn how to extract the best flavor out of an ingredient, give them 1/2 hour on the internet to do some research.

What do they do between the time they take of the tarp and the 1/2 hour or so before starting the game? Is it all for relining the infield, or there is some draining involved?

Selling more beer.

i apologize if i missed any sarcasm on your part.

Nolan Ryan isn’t sarcastic, but I’m kidding. Even if the FO was willing to let our younguns go that far, I can’t imagine they could this year.

yeah, i figured so much.  my bad.

Looks like there is still a big ol crowd in Texas waiting for the game.

Hey hey ! I got the Ranger feed !

Looks like it’s still drizzling. Hopefully just the remnant. Jeets looks like he’s pulling it more now.

Well if you flew out to Arlington for a ballgame, you’d probably stick around, too.  It was pretty solid NYY territory yesterday.

Hopefully the Yanks offense understands they might not get the full 9 innings tonight so no messing around waiting for the ninth.

John Brattain Memorial Fund

The Hardball Times has set up a memorial fund for John Brattain's family. He left behind a wife and two teenage daughters.

Four years ago, I found from personal experience how generous the online community can be to its own in their hour of need. I am now literally begging you to be even more generous than you were to me.
