Yankee Win Probability: 64.6%
A sweep would be great.
Go Yankees
*My calculations have the Yankees at 74.73% to win. But that’s just foolishness since Chamberlain isn’t a true starting pitcher. So hopefully SG can plug in his number before game time.

So hopefully SG can plug in his number before game time.
Or just post a new gamethread.
So nice to see Posada back in the lineup.
Or just post a new gamethread.
Nah, if Jonathan was able to get Sergio Mitre to pitch a one-hitter, he gets the next game thread. I did update the win probability though.
SG, I wasn’t sure whether to post Kotsay’s WAR as a White Sock or his season WAR. Same with Hinske and the Yankees. I opted for the former.
My probability was skewed by my incorporating an Awesome Factor of 11 for Jeter.
Really? triple on a ground ball?
Sterling raising the ante: “It is impossible to predict baseball.
9 pitches, 7 strikes, good. what the hell happened on that ground ball?
There’s that AF I was incorporating.
[7] Went right down the 1B line and rattled around the corner by the wall. Also, remember Posednik’s only baseball related skill is that he is fast.
Freddy Garcia kind of looks like a professional wrestler.
A Yankee was picked off. Step 1 to being an official game.
What’s funny is that Ted’s right, being fast is the only skill - he’s not even good at basestealing!!
And I think the odds of a wild pitch and a four-pitch walk in a Joba game are decent, too, TJ.
The Yankees should just change the “rules” for Joba every start, just to give the media something to talk about.
My probability was skewed by my incorporating an Awesome Factor of 11 for Jeter.
You sold him short.
Podsednik’s Grit Factor is second in the AL with 145.45.
[14] The next news about Joba will be a release from the Yankees saying “We’ll start Joba whenever we damn well please.” it will be followed by a press conference in which the Yankees ask for ideas on when and how to start Joba. And then the secret plan to start Hughes will be enacted.
I think somebody needs to tell TBS that Kazmir’s career record against the Yankees, Rangers, and Sawx is almost irrelevant since he has been a completely different (awful) pitcher this year and is probably injured.
I called that Cano GIDP the second he stepped to the plate.
My probability was skewed by my incorporating an Awesome Factor of 11 for Jeter.
You sold him short.
Most blokes Awesome Factors only go up to 10. Jeter can amp his up to 11 when he needs that extra push over the cliff.
By why not just make 10 the top number and make that awesomer?
Obviously, ted, this one goes to 11. DUH!
Wait, that’s not the Yankees running the bases out there - does it still count, though?
Who’s calling these pitchouts? Like Joba doesn’t have enough trouble keeping the pitch count down…
Man, they had to WORK to let Podsednik steal that base.
Three friggin’ pitchouts in one AB. You’re likely to yield a walk that way and do exactly what was trying to be prevented, allowing the runner to get to second.
Joba, batsman this game should be a no brainer
[25] Yeah, but then you have the force on. Don’t you see?
What’s weird is that YES listed six possible choices for ROY and the #2 guy in VORP wasn’t even up there.
Weird.
Hinske will a VERY audible “Farnsworth” picked up on the mic near home plate after that pop-up. (But he didn’t say Farnsworth at all, he said THE word, the F—- word)
11!
[28] In fairness to them, the VORP stat wasn’t available to look at because Sterling had thrown it somewhere.
Trader!
Thank you, Johnny!
I am sold, bring Damon back on a one year contract, this is a guy you want in a perpetual contract year.
I’m old enough to remember when I didn’t enjoy watching Damon do that.
I’m old enough to remember when I didn’t enjoy watching Damon do that.
Somewhere a single tear is rolling down Javy Vasquez’s cheek.
Damon is making himself very expensive
OK, let’s hold them for 5 more innings, Al.
Damon rocks NYS: before today, .989 home OPS versus .788 road OPS.
So…Joba done? Hurt, or innings limit? Radio suggests the latter.
Oh this is going to be a shitstorm.
Could Dan Pasqua be one of the answers?
It’s the latter, Dave.
I really hope Aceves is done regressing.
Somewhere a single tear is rolling down Javy Vasquez’s cheek.
Even to the same part of the ballpark (granted, different ballpark, but still).
What the hell is this now?
By the by, what I’m guessing Dan Pasqua for is “What other Yankees (besides Swisher) have hit 20+ homers for the Yankees and the White Sox?”
What the hell is this now?
Joba will now pitch on regular rest, but for shorter outings.
I’m fairly modern when it comes to pitcher use patterns, but what the Yankees are doing here is just bizarre. There is absolutely no evidence that it will be of benefit to anyone.
Yay, Aceves!
3 inning 35 pitches? wow. I knew the outings would be shorter but damn.
Damon is making himself very expensive
Not to the Yankees. They have already expressed that they want to bring him back, but only on a one year deal, or two at the max. Also, they can play Damon and Matsui against each other - “There is one single 1 year $8MM contract available. Who wants it?”
It would be nice if the Jays could at least look somewhat like a professional hitting ball club against Paul Byrd.
These rollover minute commercials are annoying, but I think the kid who plays the annoying son does a very nice job, acting-wise.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see him pop up in a sitcom someday soon.
[50] It sounds like the plan is to have his shorter outings be in the next couple of weeks, and then to have him make a couple of longer starts towards the end of the season to have him stretched back out for the playoffs.
I got Tartabull.
Pasqua never hit 20 homers as a Yankee. Amazing.
Yeah, Ted’s description is right on.
“What other Yankees (besides Swisher) have hit 20+ homers for the Yankees and the White Sox?”
Matt Nokes? Steve Kemp? Oscar Gamble?
Scratch Nokes. I have a Tigers/White Sox crossed wire.
It’s hard to imagine paying Damon too much. There’s just WAAAAAY too much of a chance he’ll crap the bed next year.
The answers are Tartabull (I was shocked to recall he actually had a career post-NYY) and Robin Ventura.
Smart base running, even if there was no way to escape an out.
SG, I wasn’t sure whether to post Kotsay’s WAR as a White Sock or his season WAR. Same with Hinske and the Yankees. I opted for the former.
I generally include everything in the same league, so for Hinske we’d only have his Yankee time, but for Rios I’d have both his Toronto time and his White Sox time. Doesn’t really matter all that much.
Pasqua never hit 20 homers as a Yankee. Amazing.
Did he ever get more than 300 PAs in a season?
It’s hard to imagine paying Damon too much. There’s just WAAAAAY too much of a chance he’ll crap the bed next year.
I’d be concerned about his health, but I would bet he’ll be productive when he plays. Of course maybe health should be part of the risk of him crapping the bed.
Anyone know how Tartabull’s career ended?
He played just three games his last season at the age of 34, but I don’t believe he retired due to injury.
Seems odd.
I’m fairly modern when it comes to pitcher use patterns, but what the Yankees are doing here is just bizarre. There is absolutely no evidence that it will be of benefit to anyone.
But there’s also no evidence that it won’t pay off and turn Joba into a monster.
In all seriousness though, what options do they have?
These are the facts:
-They need Joba as a 4th starter for the playoffs
-If they start Joba regularly and let him go 5 or more innings each start, he will blow waayyy past whatever innings cap they set for him
-They tried skipping a start for him, but the results were awful
-They don’t want to move him back to the pen
Anyone know how Tartabull’s career ended?
I think George Costanza was involved.
Did he ever get more than 300 PAs in a season?
Yeah, in 1986 and 87. It was one of those years that I could have sworn he hit 20. Instead, he hit 16 and 17, respectively (in 332 and 362 PAs, respectively).
Tartabull was a beast in 1993.
I love how the Sox have gotten Halladay twice and it STILL doesn’t matter.
Ree-donk-you-less.
Apparently Timmons is afraid that Garcia will hit him with a metal folding chair if he doesn’t give Freddy EVERY pitch off the outside.
-They tried skipping a start for him, but the results were awful
Yeah, I saw that, but what makes them think it had anything to do with the extra rest? It’s not as if Joba hasn’t had any bad starts on regular rest.
This Halladay kid sucks, how come he almost never pitches against us?
And what’s going to happen come playoff time when the Yankees need Joba to go 6-7 and throw 100+ pitches?
If I were at NYS I’d be chanting MVP at Jeter, just because. I think he has overtaken Tex as the local favorite. I kinda hope he’s runner-up.
[70] Timmons smells what Garcia is cookin’
[71] Valid point, but they think the extra rest was responsible. If you can convince them that it wasn’t then please do, and while you’re at it, tell them Hughes should start.
[73] I think that is why part of their plan is to have him make a couple of longer starts (normal pitch count dictating when he is pulled rather than innings) at the end of the season. It’s not like they would start him in the post-season with the plan being to pull him after the 3rd inning.
[66] The treatment of the Yankee organization on Seinfeld is the single biggest fountainhead of respect I have for George Steinbrenner. He was absolutely torched on that show, just such a fine, fine roast, and yet by all accounts Steinbrenner enjoyed the show (from Wikipedia: “Nevertheless, the real Steinbrenner maintains that he is a fan of the show and that ‘Costanza is always welcome back.’”)
Hey, sometimes you just run into the Paul Byrds of the world and there’s nothing you can do about it.
[78] It just goes to show that you can’t predict baseball.
Costanza is always welcome back reminds me of Dan Quayle talking about Murphy Brown.
Are the Yankees minor leaguers allowed to wear the team’s retired numbers? For instance, is there some kid in Tampa wearing #3?
Just wondering when the retired # thing will enter problem territory and cause them to need triple digits.
Thanks a lot, Roy. Real pal.
Am I stuck in a hole in the space time continuum and it is 2008 and Joba is being converted from a reliever to a starter? If so I’m betting the Phillies to win the WS.
81 They should retire #3 from MLB just as they retired Jackie Robinson’s number.
That play was the epitome of Podsenik’s career - a fluke.
Dear White Sox,
Even though it’s apparent you are not making the postseason, please stop hitting balls off our pitchers’ arms.
Thanks.
-Yankee fans
If there is ever a day to let Hughes go two innings, it is today.
Is #42 retired from minor league baseball as well?
How is the Yanks DP rate?
[87]Empirical evidence suggests that there is never such a day.
I enjoy the Blue Jays loading up the bases just to annoy me more when they score no runs.
[84] Do you mean because the Babe was the first African-American major leaguer?
I love that the Sox have more games against Chicago left.
Although, they DO still have six left against TB.
Is #42 retired from minor league baseball as well?
What number did Jackie wear in Montreal?
Darling accuses Sterling of homerism. Shocking.
They also showed a glimpse of Sterling, and I may have caught a glimpse of Waldman too for a good measure. Teh goggles, predictably, did nothing.
Did Darling really call out Sterling?
That’s sort of ballsy.
Halladay has seriously given up four runs in four innings against the Sox while Byrd has held Toronto scoreless. That actually happened.
Was TBS really talking about the short-porch in right after Damon deposited that in the second deck? Does that make any sense?
[96] Darling said “If you hear John call Yankee games, you can see that he is a tiny bit happier when things are going well for the Yankees.”
Three runs won’t cut it
