Yankee Win Probability: 69.2%

The Yankees are overwhelming favorites to win their ALDS series just about every where you look, but that can change very quickly if they don’t win tonight.  C.C. Sabathia is the Yankees’ ace, and to advance through the playoffs they probably need to win all of his starts.  Yeah, yeah, yeah he has a less than stellar postseason record.  IT’S FIVE F’ING STARTS.

This game is important, because it’s the first game of the postseason, and the postseason is important.

In my dreams, C.C. goes seven innings allowing two hits and no runs, with Phil Hughes pitching a perfect eighth and Mo a perfect ninth.  Alex Rodriguez goes 2 for 4 with a first inning HR that gives the Yankees a lead they never relinquish.

Go Yankees.

saving the mismatch chatters in case we need them later?

Playoffs?!

saving the mismatch chatters in case we need them later?

Yep, I’ve got the mismatch chatters and the whatever girl on standby as needed.

“Yankee Win Probability: 69.2%”
“but that can change very quickly if they don’t win tonight”

And you had 79% overall?  Hmm, but it’s not always the same # of games.  Oh well, might as well take a success-oriented viewpoint.

69.2% is just for tonight’s game.

Have the Yankees faced this Duensing kid before, at all?  If not, that worries me (even though I know it shouldn’t).

SG, are your dreams like guarantees?

SG, are your dreams like guarantees?

I’ll let you know in like six hours.

“69.2% is just for tonight’s game”

Sure, I was just thinking what it meant if the bad 31% occurred.  It shouldn’t be as simple as rescaling the overall #.

it’s scary how close SG and my dreams match up.  SG, ever have the dream where the hamburger is eating YOU?

I’ve been waiting for Cliff Lee to turn into a pumpkin for a year and a half now. I now admit defeat.

So, Cliff Lee gives up a run? He is adapting to NL. In approximately a year, he will resemble an NL ace rather than an AL ace.

My wish came true.. the Phils/Rox game didn’t cut into the Yanks game.

TBS continues with the stellar coverage. This is that Chevy Chase bit from Spies Like Us. “I ha… unch date.. so I ..ust go.”

In my dreams, CC throws an 81-pitch perfect game and A-rod hits 6 grand slams.

69.2%—per a previous discussion, that’s pretty much the ceiling, no?

Fun with sophistry-the Yankees are 7 and 0 against the Twinkies, out of any twelve games the Twinkies rate to win at least 3, QED we’re in trouble.  Yankees in four however.

69.2%—per a previous discussion, that’s pretty much the ceiling, no?

It’s close, but I’ve gotten as high as 74% in a single game.  Something like Sabathia vs. Hochevar in New York with Willie Bloomquist leading off would be around there.

Did I just hear someone say C.M. Wang?  I know he’s on the 40 man, but do you really want to start the playoffs invoking his name?

“pretty much the ceiling”

Is there a ceiling, beyond 98 Yankees vs all replacement-level?  Some effective regression?

If the Yankees never face an elimination game this postseason I may live a couple years longer.

this game 1 feels like an elimination game.  How could they lose this game?  it’s served up to them on a silver platter.  I will feel no joy during this game.

I wish I could get home before seven thirty.
Suz and Serling will have to keep me in the zone.
GO YANKS!!!

the whatever girl on standby

She didn’t get it done for us the other night.

But this is a lead pipe cinch.

kronic, I feel that way about the whole series.

Chip Caray has said the dumbest thing I’ve ever head anyone involved with baseball say. It was something like, “If you’re so concerned with their innings limits, why not put them in the bullpen and not worry about it?” He clearly didn’t realize that teams worry about innings limits so that the pitcher can be a successful starter down the line.

Is that Chip Caray or Jim Carey?

Is there a ceiling, beyond 98 Yankees vs all replacement-level?  Some effective regression?

Yeah, the ceiling is essentially best lineup ever, and the floor is the worst possible lineup you’d ever see in major league baseball.  Say you had the 1927 Yankees (.714 wpct) versus the 1899 Cleveland Spiders (.130 wpct), arguably the best and worst teams of all time.  If you plug those into Bill James’s log 5 formula, you get something like ‘27 Yankees with a 95% win probability.  Obviously, those are the extremes.  Most teams are generally in the .4 to .6 wpct area.

Man I just want to punch Caray in the face.

Derek Jeter Half Dollar?!?! Sign me up!

Craig whatsisname from TBS - the guy who is channeling a 60’s game show host - just did a segment about the wind gushing into the “wind tunnel”. They’re blaming it on Canadian low pressure.

Wait ‘til I add a few pulses from the Vortex Engine. I’m gonna blow his plastic hair helmet clean off.

C’mon CC, let’s not walk the leadoff guy!....

And it begins.  I hate these games….

.....should’ve walked him.

I would have preferred that that at-bat did not happen.

I don’t like the ump’s strike zone that much.

It sucks that I have to watch this game on mute, but every game Caray calls should be another year in jail for crimes against humanity.

I can’t believe I seriously just muted the TV and put on Walding.

That’s how much I hate Chip Caray.

Much better. Now do that 26 more times.

I would listen to the radio instead but are Miller/Phillips or Serling?Suzie any better besides the radio call always beats the Tv picture by a bit

26 more, CC.

It’s not fair that Clay beat me, he’s programmed that way.

Oh WTF Jorge…

Put in Molina

Nice, Jorge.  Really good.

23, 26, 35—yeah, this whole series is gonna be kinda joyless, isn’t it?

Fuckin strikes. please.

I would listen to the radio instead but are Miller/Phillips or Serling?Suzie any better besides the radio call always beats the Tv picture by a bit

I hate Caray so much that I just turned the TV off. It’s really stupid on my part (and I’ll probably change it later), but eh, Caray really annoys me.

Molino would have snagged that with his bare hand.

posada could have made his point by complaining less, and catching balls more.

Awesome K right there (so it sounded on the radio wink).

Damn you to hell, Clay.

I never listen to Caray so I suppose I can bear it for a while.  If the radio and TV were in synch I’d probably do ESPN.  Nice pitch CC!!

I’m so glad that Morneau is not playing.

Does anyone know what’s going on with MLBTV? They’re saying blacked out for the desktop but I can get a video feed from At Bat on the phone.

fastest fingers in the RLYW!

And Kay was saying today they should walk Mauer there

eh. I’ll take it.

Stranded runner at 3rd with 1 out, nice.

there we go, big fella!

Yankees in three.

CC looks very good.

CC with some battlin’.

Okay, A-Rod, grand slam time!

Good start, how many pitches?

Sheesh - Are we really gonna have to look at empty seats or people in suits on cellphones behind home plate and along the baselines?

[70] 22, 13-9

I’m going to take joy in winning this series.
It’s like that argument about the weak part of the schedule - what are you supposed to do, NOT beat up on those teams?
You play who you play, and winning counts.  Didn’t losing to the Tiggers in the first round count?

David Wells was knocking Saint Joe Torre this afternoon on FAN

MVP ! MVP ! MVP !

‘First pitch Derek’, they call him.

First pitch hit - awesome.

What did Wells say, bebop?

Jeter doing his best to set up the requested ARod-slam.

No bunt Johnny please

Damon is going to fuck it up. With a rally killer.

Torre had his inner circle of favorites and ignored everyone else, that he David played for his teammates not Joe.

AH, centerfield camera is out. fuck you mlb.

Are we really gonna have to look at empty seats or people in suits on cellphones behind home plate and along the baselines?

This is the REAL story! Also, the Red Sox would have won the division if they tried.

OK, I’ll leave you guys alone. Enjoy your dinner of sacrificial lamb.

Shoulda bunted

I would really like a run here to take the edge off my nervousness, irrational or not.

Who’s the other guy with Caray?  Will we be spared Sagar and his Prisoner outfits and shamelss plugs?

[88] Ron Darling.

Jesus, and they start it with A-Rod IMMEDIATELY….

Vortex Control: Engage, Mode=Pulse, Magnitude=11, Lift=+15deg.

If ARod doesn’t get a hit here his season, nay career, is an absolute failure.

I’m stressed about giving a “here are the problems in our analysis” talk to an expert audience next week while jetlagged, so the game stress isn’t well-timed.

[74] details?

Gonna have to switch from Pulse mode to Streaming.

Pin, did you factor in the wind?

Maybe Girardi should’ve started A-Rod in the 8 spot, until he proved himself.

Way back in the 20th century, Bill James wrote the first essential book about baseball managers. Chris Jaffe has just written the second.

From now on, whenever I have a question about a manager, Jaffe's book will be the first and last one I reach for.

John Brattain Memorial Fund

The Hardball Times has set up a memorial fund for John Brattain's family. He left behind a wife and two teenage daughters.

Four years ago, I found from personal experience how generous the online community can be to its own in their hour of need. I am now literally begging you to be even more generous than you were to me.
