Toronto Blue Jays (1-1) at New York Yankees(1-1), 7:05pm ***Game Chatter***

The rubber game of the last first series of the season at the original yet renovated Yankee Stadium is upon us.
TOR: Dustin McGowan (0-0,0.00) vs. NYY: Phil Hughes (0-0, 0.00)

Toronto can throw three tough pitchers at you in any given series.  McGowan throws as hard as Burnett, but hopefully he won’t have his A game tonight.  He’ll be pitching despite flu-like symptoms.

Your lineups…

Toronto
David Eckstein, SS
Matt Stairs, LF
Alexis Rios, RF
Vernon Wells, CF
Frank Thomas, DH
Lyle Overbay, 1B
Aaron Hill, 2B
Marco Scutaro, 3B
Gregg Zaun, C

New York Yankees
Johnny Damon DH
Derek Jeter SS
Bobby Abreu RF
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Jason Giambi 1B
Robinson Cano 2B
Hideki Matsui LF
Jose Molina C
Melky Cabrera CF

Matsui gets a game in the field.  Wonderful.

Every Hughes start this year is going to be an event.  Go Yanks.

I really want to watch this game, but despite my earlier comments I can’t because I have practice and class. Anyways, go Hughes, go Yanks!

The word from PeteAbe is that Matsui is in LF to get acclimated for when Melky is suspended and Damon goes to CF. I guess those 100’s of games in LF over the last 4 years weren’t enough? I know he’s coming of a knee injury, but come on.

David Cone just said “variate”.

The new Clyde?

I must have missed what Posada’s injury is.

Stiff throwing shoulder, apparently.

Apparently there’s a small angry canine living in Jorge’s shoulder.

It’s bad enough he couldn’t DH?

McGowan’s definitely pitching? Heard he had a minor day-to-day injury and Marcum might.

Who knows?  They say they just decided to be really cautious with it.

9 was in response to 7

Also, the word yesterday was that Posada would be playing if it was September and the race was tight.

Jeter Christ—(like the screen name)—Yeah, McGowan felt flu-likes but got over it in time to go out in the cold and rain.

Something new from MLB extra innings this season.  They’re showing both the YES feed and the Toronto feed of this game.

BTW, rained out in Bal’mer tonight, and all that crap is going to be in NYC tomorrow.

“I really want to watch this game, but despite my earlier comments I can’t because I have practice and class. “

Anyone else notice Hoadley’s full of excuses?  Not a real fan in my opinion.

Yeah, Mike and the Dog were expecting it to get rained out fwiw, maybe even getting canceled as early as tomorrow morning.

And thanks Frog.

Was that inning economical enough for you, Don?

I f**king love Hughes’ f**king curve balls.

Man, Hughes stinks.  He only struck out two that inning.

Not too early to start the Hughes for Cy Young campaign, is it?

FRANCHISEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEe

Hey back off Hoadley, fgas.  There’s a lotta sprouts to eat in L.A.

McGowan trying to bring back the muttonchops.

Gameday had that last at 91 mph - how’s his velocity been in ST?  (Different climate etc. nonwithstanding.)

23 re Hughes.  Bit of a delay out to the West Coast…

Seeing guys with muttonchops always makes me think of Brady Anderson in his 1 50 HR season.

I’m in LA, Frog.  Out here men stand 10 feet tall and eat puppies without seasoning.  Except Hoadley.

Time for Abreu’s first HR.

McGowan’s always liked Lash Leroux more than Kidman or Mysterio.

Not too early to start the Hughes for Cy Young campaign, is it?

You guys crack me up.

Nevermind Cy Young How about for renaming it the Phil Hughes award.

There’s a lotta sprouts to eat in L.A.

You’re living in the past.  They had an outbreak of some kind with sprouts a few years ago and now they’re pretty hard to find.

I really miss the days when they were plentiful.

Rooneyowns has his fastball working early today.

Um, is there something on tv at 9 that the players really want to watch?

[31] Up in the Bay Area they went away maybe five years ago but the deli I go to has them again since a few weeks.

20 pitches, 2 innings.  Hughes is trying to make his 80 last.

Nevermind Cy Young How about for renaming it the Phil Hughes award.

We should change the name of the game from “baseball” to “Phil Hughes ball” .

is there something on tv at 9 that the players really want to watch?

Dunno, but there is rain forecast for 10.

Um, is there something on tv at 9 that the players really want to watch?

Nah.  Lost is a rerun.

I don’t like the way Yes is bringing up the no-hitter attempt from last year with Hughes pitching so well tonight, they might jinx it lol.

Up in the Bay Area they went away maybe five years ago but the deli I go to has them again since a few weeks.

Great, it should only take a few years for them to make it down to LA.

Do you know if Phil has a limited puitch count?

Don was on teh boards earlier grousing about Hughes throwing 80 pitches in 5 innings, Kranker.

Dunno, but there is rain forecast for 10.

Actually, that is a pretty good explanation. Of course Giambi fucks up the plan by walking…

Cano once again first pitch swinging. Also I wish they’d give Hughes more than 80 or at least not be as strict as I’m sure they will be about the 80.

Thank you gasparini

I hate Matsui, we should’ve traded him to the Giants for whatever we could’ve gotten, nice to see Robbie running though.

I really doubt that Hughes is on a 80 pitch limit.  He threw 90 or more in every start last year except the one when he got hurt.

Where are you guys getting this 80 pitch count from?

Sweet, 1-0 Rangers, PPG by Jags.

By the way, where is Fabian?

Who the hell is Don and why do you listen to him?

Nice to see Hughes inducing at best weak contact.

“Who the hell is Don and why do you listen to him?”

An excellent question.

Jagr scores again 2 PPG we should check and see if hell has frozen over.

So nice of Kay to jinx the perfect game, and just in time, right after the commercial, Jags with another PPG, 2-0 Rangers. Not sure what he’s thinking with the soul patch though.

When I see Giambi playing first I actually think that first base is the most dificult position in the field.

Who the hell is Don and why do you listen to him?

He’s a cranky sort who posts here from time to time.  And nobody’s listening to him, they’re giving him grief about his grousing.

Personally, I’d like Hughes to be a little bit LESS efficient.  The fantasy team needs strikeouts.

Hip hip, Jose!

My closed captioning is really weird and keeps on calling the Blue Jays the Twins.  Even odder, it will insert the word “Twins” at random…

Get your Molinas correct, dudes, please.

Molina is a great backup catcher.

Hooo-kay, so… according to Gameday, Hughes’ out-pitches that inning were the curve, fastball and change. Yikes.

How is it that Steinbrenner didn’t unload him at the deadline for Dmitri Young or something?

Hip hip, Jose!

Get your Molinas correct, dudes, please.

I think that was a pun.  Or maybe a palindrome.

How is it that Steinbrenner didn’t unload him at the deadline for Dmitri Young or something?

Or Reggie Sanders.

And Kay just said “two straight walks to start off the third inning.” ugh.

I love Melky’s plate discipline.

Gameday sometimes gets its pitches hilariously wrong, SSF.
I am busy having food poisoning and the game distracts me nicely.

I think Damon should bunt.

Molina is a great backup catcher

This is redundant, since “Molina” is Spanish for “fine backup catcher.”

You owe me a coke, kranker.

I think that was a pun.  Or maybe a palindrome.

If it’s either it wasn’t intentional on my part so much as semi-delerium.

Re: Ivy… Dang. I rely on it from 4-6pm Pacific. So Hughes doesn’t have three major league out pitches then?

I don’t like wasting outs, but when the team is really struggling to score I think they have to, and more when the guy at the plate bunts pretty good.

Wow and Jeter true to form GIDP to end the inning. Ugh.

Eff Damon and Jeter.  I’m so over those guys.

Unbelievable, I mean who didn’t see that coming. Captain DP.

Farnsworth’s pitching to Zeile on SNY right now.

i’d like someone to explain why #2 has gotten so proficient at doing that. season high last year plus however many in last years alds too. it’s really irritating. that’s matsui’s job.

Mr. Double Play. Maybe if he keeps playing through his 40’s he might get 3,000 DPs instead of 3,000 hits.

I really think Girardi did not handle this situation well. Damon should have bunted.

I’d guess Delgado.

SSF, I am unsure since I’ve been watching the game but am too sick to tell which pitch is which, so I can’t really confirm or deny anything with any veracity.

Hughes makes me feel old.

Watch out.  The little man has a habit of playing on Series-winning teams.

Farnsworth’s pitching to Zeile on SNY right now.

The history channel shows baseball?

See?  he’s pesky!  Wears ya out!

Kay jinxed him. I fucking hate the man

I once dated a dude Eckstein’s size.  I was constantly afraid of crushing him.

There goes the no-hitter. I’m getting sick of Yes’ Eckstein love-in.

Wow The Yanks should just play their outfield about 30 feet behind their infield when Eckstein is up.

Why don’t NY fans do things like deflate Kay’s tires?  We were made of sterner stuff back in Whitson’s day.

Apparently gametracker’s pitch locations have no relation to reality.  That first pitch looked a good foot outside and was a strike.  Also, anyone have an update on what Hughes is throwing on the YES gun?

Ivy, would you do us a favor and date Eck?  And crush him.

Way to go, Ivy!

Eeeep.  I want to replace Michael Kay.

Phil hung that curve.

Wow the new Robby Alomar makes a defensive play there that might cost us a run.

I have a policy of not dating married men.  However, the crushing could happen anyway- it’s an ancient kung fu technique of large Chinese women.

That should be an E-4.

It was an E4.

Way back in the 20th century, Bill James wrote the first essential book about baseball managers. Chris Jaffe has just written the second.

John Brattain Memorial Fund

The Hardball Times has set up a memorial fund for John Brattain's family. He left behind a wife and two teenage daughters.

Four years ago, I found from personal experience how generous the online community can be to its own in their hour of need. I am now literally begging you to be even more generous than you were to me.
