Yankee win probability: 63.8%

Yay, Brett Gardner’s back.  Derek Jeter is three hits away from tying Lou Gehrig’s Yankee hits record and with two games he just may get there today.  Also, the Yankees can’t lose in Gardner’s return, so that makes this game important.

Go Yankees.

Game 2: 7:05 PM ET

TB: Andy Sonnanstine (26, RHP, 6-8, 6.62 ERA, 5.48 FIP, -1.3 WAR) vs NYY: A.J. Burnett (28, RHP, 10-8, 4.29 ERA, 4.51 FIP, 2.3 WAR)

Jose Molina, C (.223/.293/.282, -0.4 WAR)
Total,  (.288/.364/.491, 20.1 WAR)

Yankee win probability: TBA

Whatever.

I would be shocked if Sonnanstine does NOT pitch well in this game, despite those ugly numbers.  As every Yankee fan knows, A.J. Burnett’s going through a rough patch.  The Yankees need an effective Burnett for the postseason, so this is an important game for him.  That therefore makes it an important game for the Yankees as well.

Go Yankees, once again.

Let’s go Yanks.

Glad to see Fernando Perez in TB’s lineup.  There was a pretty decent profile of him in NYT before last year’s World Series.  Staff and team officials would approach him in spring training and start speaking Spanish and finally, he’d say, “Listen, I barely speak Spanish, but I did study creative writing at Columbia University, so I’m pretty comfortable in English.”

remind me again how this DH came to be

Nice to see Brett Gardner back…

Bummer that Pena’s hurt.

They need to let Swisher wear road grey for home games.

Gameday has some of these called strikes being well outside.

Unearned run… but i’ll take it…

[7]
It’s the endearing nature of the human element.  We’ll miss the bad calls when the umpires are actually made to make correct calls as confirmed by the more-than-available technology.

Lets play two.

Why is MVP Longoria batting 7th?

And… Alex’s AB the difference between a 16 and a 22-pitch first inning by Garza.

Well, there goes the perfecto/no-hitter/shutout.

He walked a guy in the first.

[11] 6th.  Why?  To protect fearsome slugger Pat Burrell

[11] Bartlett’s error was on the 10th pitch with 2 outs.

Michael Kay: king of the “old time pitchers”

[16]
True.  But this is also true - at that point.

Michael Kay: king of the “old time pitchers”

??

[19] Garza exchanged balls and Kay noted that “old time pitchers” would never give up a ball with a scuff or flaw.

On a scale of 1-10, how disappointed is SG that Jeter is about to break the record? I say 11.

[20]
Right.  In the old days, the umpire would say: I’m changing the ball, give me that one.  And the pitcher would say: No.

Nothing creative about that swinging K.

Here’s an anecdote about old time pitchers that I wish Kay would tell.  Connie Mack’s son once came out of the dugout to give Bobo Newsom the hook, explaining that Dad had ordered the change.

Newsom’s response: “Well, you can just tell Daddy to go [——] hisself.”

In the old days, the umpire would say: I’m changing the ball, give me that one.  And the pitcher would say: No. I am just going to scuff up the new one with this sandpaper in my glove, so I might as well keep this one.

Fixed, old-time level-playing-field-style.

Official Yankee Game.

Pinstiper beat me to it!

The milestones they’re not talking about:

Brett Gardner is just one double away from his 10th career two bagger.

[18] Pete, the point I was going for was that things like errors and poor defense can take/look like they take a bigger toll on the pitcher than that play. It looks like Garza isn’t crumbling in response - yeah the inning was extended, but he came back with a 16 pitch inning to follow.

Contrast with Deuce Mitre yesterday.

Question for the stat guys - is this fully accounted for in FIP ?

A pretty disturbing look into the WCBS radio booth…and Michael Kay’s mind

Anybody on the radio? What’d she say?

Look at that, toasted Arod, who will never recover from his surgery, is leading this Yankees team in OPS right now.

Look at that, toasted Arod, who will never recover from his surgery, is leading this Yankees team in OPS right now.

The problem is, the people you are arguing at don’t even know what OPS means.

Wow, Brett.  You are a freakin’ speed demon.

Toasted ARod desires jam?

[33] The bigger problem is most of that is due to his team leading OBP, so it’s nice if you like players who don’t give away outs, but we all know that’s not how to play the game the right way.

The best players give away outs to move runners over, save all their hits for two-out RISP situations, don’t hit rally-killing HR, and don’t clog the bases by taking walks.

Answering my own question, after looking up the FIP formula, it is accounted for…not at all. Totally unrelated.

I’m gonna forego further stat discussion and confine myself to Wang jokes and complaints about the umpires (real and imaginary).

I would really like the Yankees to win this game.  Who’s with me?

For those without TV, Gardner’s catch of Perez’s fly ball was excellent.  He was going full speed and made a sliding backhand grab at the track.  Definitely saved a run.

[38] Seconded.

Thanks Jonathan.

I have a TV but do not have access to YES and i’m too cheap to buy the MLB cable package.

I predict that Jeter will get 3 hits total today.

I am going tomorrow night.

Gameday is telling me this strikezone sucks.

Garza is impossible to hit unless your name is Alex, apparently.

3-1 lead for the light sox.

No matter the outcome, IBB Longoria, putting the force in order, and facing Welcome Back Kotter is the correct move.

Gameday says that was strike 3.

Was that pitch really right there?

CC intent on going 3-2 on nearly every batter.  Weird strategy.

[49] Seems to be working…

[49] I assume it ties in with the strategy of teaching the minor leaguers to walk a lot of batters.

Step 1 - throw lots of balls rather than strikes

Step 2 - ???

Step 3 - PROFIT!

I like that CC straightened up Kapler with his 100th pitch.  He really looks like he could throw 17 innings if you needed him to

Wow, Teix.  That was poor.

Look at ARod trying to steal Jeter’s thunder on what could be Jeter’s big day. Typical.

Biggest AB of the season and Robby’s up

At this rate A-Rod could end up hitting .300

Blinders, STAT !

Robbie, playing the game the right way, gets a veteran Posada to the plate with two-outs and a runner further into scoring position. Take that Pedoria.

Can they break through?

I’m pretty sure Garza is trying to walk Po on four pitches to get to Hinske, but the ump wasn’t cooperating.

This ump really really sucks.

@62 - That’s exactly what I was thinking.

Obviously, Hughes and Mo will each only be used in one of two games, so do they save one of them for the second game, or use them both as necessary in this game and just gamble that they either aren’t needed in game 2 or Robertson can close?

Beckett on the cusp of a 4.00 ERA. Come on White Sox!

Fuck game 2. Get one win in your back pocket if you have the opportunity. You could lose Game 2 12-0 with one of your relief aces sitting on the bench scratching his ass.

Beckett on the cusp of a 4.00 ERA. Come on White Sox!

Come on now, Stretch!

I hate pesky foul balls.

Does Aceves really make the sign of the cross before warming up in the bullpen?

Aceves is warming, and this is probably CC’s last batter, but why didn’t they have Marte warming in case Barlett reaches and Marte could face LHH Crawford?

[71]
Perhaps he’s imagining a batter and

[71] Yes. Saw him make the move just a few minutes ago on YES. I didn’t hear them comment on it.

[72] Nevermind.

Nice outing for CC.  Hope they score him a run in the bottom of the inning to get him a win.

[73]
That shouldn’t have been sent.  I hit refresh, not submit.

[71] If believing in imaginary things makes him pitch better, more power to him.

[75] Oh, I saw it.  I just thought that that tended to be reserved for live action.  I like it when Pudge does it after a base hit when the team’s down by eight runs

Gameday has that third pitch to Hinkse landing several feet under the ground. Wish I could see that live.

I hope Hinske playing the first game means Damon and Matsui are both playing the night game.

[80] Didn’t reach the dirt. It was like Miss America throwing out the first pitch.

Gameday is appalled.

Jeter = veteran, right?

I think Joe Morgan and/or Steve Philips need to be at the game for the veteran with 2-outs rule to apply.

Walking Crawford-smart strategy.

Pretty sure Crawford was safe there.

Wait, Carl Crawford can be caught stealing?

Was there any chance that wouldn’t be a pitchout?

Beautiful tag.

Hughes’s low fastball is so filthy when he spots it

Pretty sure Crawford was safe there.

Replay showed clearly that he was out.

He struck out NOBODY this inning?

Phil Hughes sucks.

Ah, I am onto Girardi’s strategy. If Hughes is the one who records the 3rd out in teh ate, it is guaranteed the Yankees will score multiple runs the next half inning.

Wasn’t Lance Cormier pitching in the 1980s?

[71] If believing in imaginary things makes him pitch better, more power to him.

You crazy atheists and your backhanded compliments.

John Brattain Memorial Fund

The Hardball Times has set up a memorial fund for John Brattain's family. He left behind a wife and two teenage daughters.

Four years ago, I found from personal experience how generous the online community can be to its own in their hour of need. I am now literally begging you to be even more generous than you were to me.
