Hey, this pie chart is saying something. I think it is saying: “Phil Hughes should start”

Hughes was actually a starter?

Hughes was actually a starter?

Not exactly.  He happened to spend a little time as a starter until all of the pitchers with far worse ERAs could rejoin the rotation.  Then he was able to return to his natural role as the heir to Joba.  A team player, really.

I think this chart is wrong. Doesn’t uber-prospect, Sergio Mitre, have 4 or 5 quality starts under his belt this season?

Are thoses asterisks there because Bud Selig is considering re-writing the record books due to PED use? Or is it because those guys are lefties?

Hmmm… Joba has 11 QS’s to CC’s 13.  Joba clearly belongs back in the pen, and CC is clearly a stud, big-game stopper…

Via Abraham:

“Tomko hopes the Yankees lose the next two games then go on to the World Series.”

Sorry for dissing you all night, Bomko.

[7] But if the Yankees miss the playoffs, I am holding BOMKO solely responsible for both the damage he did when on the team and the damage he did tonight against them.

Sergio Mitre has not pitched at least six innings in any of his starts.  So no, I don’t think he has any quality starts.

Wow, pathetic night for the offense.  I’m glad I went to sleep when I did (shortly after Sterling did one of his “it is high, it is far, it is… gonna be caught short of the wall.  Gosh, Suszyn, I really thought that one was outta here” on a ball Damon hit).

Honestly, raise your hand if you didn’t see that coming last night.  I missed the game last night and when I checked the score this morning I just shrugged and thought to myself, “yeah, that sounds about right.”

I love the smell of pie charts in the morning.

I know that [6] was tongue-in-cheek, but it does suggest the problem with “quality start.”  Joba’s pitched at least seven full innings four times, CC 17 times.  Joba’s not made it through the fifth more times than he’s made it through seven.

Felix Pie charts.

[10] I have to believe that Sterling’s bosses have never heard him make one of his serial faux HR calls, otherwise he would have been fired years ago.

[11] *raises hand*

My fear of being shutout by ye olde random scrub has subsided to the point where I’m genuinely surprised by last night’s results.

i like pie charts.

by the way, this just makes me sad that wang didn’t even have a quality start among his imploisions…

A pie chart showing the percentage of QS for each starter would help support Hughes going back into the rotation.

i posted yesterday that Tomko was gonna shut the Yankees out on 3 hits. He actually gave up 5 hits I guess, but I could feel this one coming.

[17] Wang barely had one quality inning this year.

Way back in the 20th century, Bill James wrote the first essential book about baseball managers. Chris Jaffe has just written the second.

From now on, whenever I have a question about a manager, Jaffe's book will be the first and last one I reach for.

John Brattain Memorial Fund

The Hardball Times has set up a memorial fund for John Brattain's family. He left behind a wife and two teenage daughters.

Four years ago, I found from personal experience how generous the online community can be to its own in their hour of need. I am now literally begging you to be even more generous than you were to me.
