Phillies (93-69) @ Dodgers (95-67), Thursday, October 15, 2009, 8:07pm **Game Chatter**

PHI: Cole Hamels (25, LHP, 10-11, 4.32) vs. LAD: Clayton Kershaw (21, LHP, 8-8, 2.79)

I’m not sure who I want to win this series.  I guess we should root for the team that looks worse.

I say the Phillies so we don’t have to deal with the “Torre’s revenge” storylines.

[1] I didn’t realize Torre had a revenge angle with the Angels? Because the will win in 2 or 3 games…

Why bother rooting for a NL team, I say the Yankees will get so soundly beaten, the series will be called after 3 games…

I’d take the Phillies just so we don’t have to deal with Manny.

...let the reverse jinxing begin.

If Ryan Howard just makes contact in YS, it’ll be a HR right?

Kershaw just made two pretty good hitters look pretty stupid.

Ronnie Belliard.. really? Is Hudson hurt or something?

Dodgers lead. A freeway series looms.

Buck and Chip? Please kill me now.

Does it make sense that after such a long layoff the pitchers will have an advantage in game 1.

Hitters are all about timing, pitchers are all about repeated motion. Seems easier to practice repeated motion and less easy to practice the type of timing you need at game speed.

Why can’t TBS get Vin Scully to broadcast Dodgers games?

So you’re saying the Angels are gonna sweep the Yankees?

is the LCS on TBS or FOX?

[16] Fox.

I shipped a new actuator and a main feed pump to Pinstriper today.
I think he’ll be able dry NYS out a bit. We may even score first.
Then we die.

is the LCS on TBS or FOX?

Crap, Yahoo sez Fox. Though TBS ain’t no better.

Carlos Ruiz, eh?

Kerfax leaking. Listing to port.

Buck Martinez: “With the pitcher next, you don’t want to walk the guy, so you throw him fastballs.”

That is exactly when you want to walk the guy. The difference is, you have two guys on base and no outs. That is the reason why you don’t want to walk another guy.

Carlos Ruiz just met his Batting Runs projection for the series.

Mrs otf now heating a big old bowl of pitchinfukatorre. And freselles.

Kershaw = toast.

Capsized vessel. Thank you.

Not so good, Mr. Kershaw.

Forgive me guys, but I’d rather have McCarver/Buck than Caray/anyone.

[29] Death by fire. Death by water. Both kind of suck.

I find that I root for whoever is losing at the time when I don’t really care who wins.

I root for Torre to be completely out-managed and embarrassed. Not that I don’t appreciate his late 1990 run, but most of 2000s sucked.

And the Dodger fans suck. But probably so do the Phillies fan.

[32] I’m totally down with this. Mainly because I don’t want to hear any more garbage about how we can’t win without Joe etc. etc.

I’m not saying anything about Joe one way or the other. But that ship has sailed and he ain’t Billy Martin. He’s not coming back, even if we wanted it.

[33] Careful lad.

Part of me wants the Yankees to humiliate the Dodgers, but the rest of me doesn’t want to risk losing to them. Phillies in 7, 135 innings total.

Come on. Chip Caray HAS to know what “fisted” means by now, doesn’t he? Just like whoever wrote the “Pen is Mightier” headline on ESPN.com today totally slipped it past his editors.

[33] Careful lad.

I guess I was speaking more of their “Phillies Suck” when they were down 5-1.

Stupid Manny.

i wished they showed more of Manny admiring his home run swing, if anyone can hot dog, man, manny is the man.

Manny homers. Red Sox swears.

Yet another reason why I want Girardi to get some rings to be kissed.

[39] I’m from Philly, Villy. No foul.

[38] @sportspickle:

Chip Caray: “Manny Ramirez gang-bangs it to center field ... money shot!”

[47] This is proof that Chip Carey is being hypnotically controlled. He is simply repeating words put in his ear from the trailer, and those guys are howling right now coming up with his lines.

[47} Don’t try to demonstrate unintended humor makes him more listenable.

root for the phillies b/c yankee fans can make the trip there to see a WS game.

It must suck to have no Aceves.

You think Yankees fan would want to watch Angels play against the Phillies?

[50] I had a very vivid dream last year around this time, where I went to a game at the Phillies new stadium. It was all escalators, stairs, and concourse area, with no concession stands, and no entrances to the actual seats. I wandered through the whole thing trying to get to the seats, went full circle, gave up and headed for the now non-existent main gate.

This really did happen (the dream, I mean).

OT- Lithgow on Dexter is friggin superb.

So… what’s the forecast for tomorrow’s game anyway. I’m going to quit the pessimism and get into bot mode.

supurb.. suburb. Well he’s quite good.

I’m yawning now. Later lads.

[56]

I eat it up, like gourme’ food.
No squarrels, jus’ get the weather good.

[58] Only in bizarro world.

Wrong again . Yay.

[62] I’m just trying to keep pace.

Phillies suck, or LA sucks.

SGCairo with the goatee.

does utley always charge grounders like that?  Seems like a perfect way to have one roll by him.

How’s George Sherrill working out for you, Joe?

SG as Cairo makes sense, if you believe that SG stands for “Super Gritty.”

The Phillies are actively trying to lose this game, right? That is what I am witnessing, isn’t it?

That was sort of fun.

From having another reliever warmup to a DP in a matter of minutes.

[53] Have you been to the new Phillies Stadium yet?  I’m curious if your impressions are from seeing it on TV or if you’ve been there…

So… what’s the forecast for tomorrow’s game anyway.

I predict…pain! (not an exact quote, but a few here will recognize it)

From Lohud:

7:48 p.m.  Ceremonial First Pitch (Yankees aren’t announcing who until tomorrow)

It’s got to be Yogi, right?

[74] Joe Torre to commemorate there last trip to the ALCS?

[75] What would be ironic is if Yankees “use up” all of their legends throwing out first-pitches in the ALCS/WS, and if it is Yanks-Phils Torre throws out the first pitch in Game 7 of the WS.  Actually not sure if that would be ironic, but certainly amusing.  Probably ironic if he threw out the first pitch of game 7 Yankees/Dodgers…

If it’s Yanks/Phils, they can get Kershaw to throw the first pitch to the backstop.  If it’s Yanks/Dodgers, Lidge can throw it and Pujols can hit it into Mohegan Sun.

[73] I have never been, nor even seen it on TV, other than brief glimpses on “Not 10” roundups and the like.

I do remember that when I was trying to find the exit, there was meant to be a famous cheesesteak sandwich joint just outside. I never got the sandwich, modammit, and then I woke up in a cold sweat.

[78]  If convenient, I’d suggest taking in a game there.  It can be a pain to get to - lots of traffic on those roads and cops directing it seem intent on making sure everyone but YOU gets to the game.  But it really is a beautiful stadium.  Lots of character, great sight-lines, you can clearly hear Philly fans boo their team, etc.

The food…well, I’ve only been there twice and considering it is a 3 hour trip (normally 2, but extra hour w/ the traffic) I’ve been more interested in getting food NOW than waiting in line at what are probably the better places.  So what I’ve eaten there (I think just burgers/chicken-fingers type food) was uninspiring.  Not bad, just nothing to write home about.

SG as Cairo makes sense, if you believe that SG stands for “Super GrittyGrutty.”

Way back in the 20th century, Bill James wrote the first essential book about baseball managers. Chris Jaffe has just written the second.

From now on, whenever I have a question about a manager, Jaffe's book will be the first and last one I reach for.

John Brattain Memorial Fund

The Hardball Times has set up a memorial fund for John Brattain's family. He left behind a wife and two teenage daughters.

Four years ago, I found from personal experience how generous the online community can be to its own in their hour of need. I am now literally begging you to be even more generous than you were to me.
