The answer to the Who will be the Yankee Orel Hersheshier in the playoffs this year question in the last thread is Phil Hughes. 8 Ks in 3 IP is just a taste of what he’s capable of.
I fully expect him to get to the 10K/3 IP level.
With Posada behind the plate, he’s got a great shot at it someday.
Battle Cat!
Is Andy Pettitte now Al Leiter?
Is Andy Pettitte now Al Leiter?
Man, that’s a scary but seemingly apt comparison.
Great, Joba looks like he might be putting it together, so of course Battle Cat seems like he might be done and “uber-prospect” Mitre is going to bomb, leading to the annual Igawa appearance.
That didn’t take very long. Commence Battle Mode™.
And Wang experience pain while throwing today, he is shutdown again til Friday when he restarts the process.
experience = experienced
And Wang experience pain while throwing today, he is shutdown again til Friday when he restarts the process.
Yeah, I’m not sure if we can count on getting anything from him at this point.
I would rather have Ken Singleton doing play by play with any former Yankee doing color commentary (seriously, even Ruben Sierra talking in 3rd person would be fine) instead of Michael Kay on play by play and Singleton pushed to color commentary.
Mitre is not going to bomb.
Is this guy a flyball pitcher? Oh yeah he is. And he has trouble striking guys out. I feel good about the Yanks getting to Hernandez early.
And Wang experience pain while throwing today
We’ve all been experience pain whenever Wang throws.
What a great swing by Teixeira. Went down and got it.
I was listening to the Detroit announcers for a while this weekend over the Yankees group. They weren’t even covering the game when Gator was there.
Thanks again for the pointer re free games.

I loved Singleton and Cone together in the booth. I think they did all the Minn. games before the break. Good stuff.
This is where Matsui shines, right?
Walking = shining??
Night of the Walking Dead-zilla!
Oh, Robinson with the bases loaded. Hmmmm. I am optimistic.
Hernandez’s first pitch strikes are impressive…
And Wang experience pain while throwing today
Not sure why I typed that the way Wang would have said it, but sometimes mistakes end up working out.
C’mon Robbie… get focused…
Green light?
Oh yeah, that was ball four.
swung at ball 4
He’s makin him work…
Refuse…to…walk…..
Cano swung at a ball? CRAZY!!!
Well that sucked. He probably swung at a couple of ball fours but he did hit the ball hard. I’m not too worried, they will score soon enough.
Plus, 35 pitches after one inning. We’re gonna be seeing lots of bullpen tonight.
Cano will never be the player he can be with that mindless approach at the plate.
As noted by SG, the Orioles are last in the AL with a -45 BRAA. I’m guessing their pen stinks too outside of Sherrill. Although Jim Johnson cracked the top 20 of AL relief pitchers apparently.
Nets GM Kiki at the game, shouldn’t he be at the summer league games in Vegas?
Yeah. That was 35 high-stress pitches for Hernandez, and they had some good swings. Unfazed about the prospects for this game.
I agree Rich… he’s very undisciplined…
ted, do you know when the Nets transfer to Brooklyn?
Unfazed about the prospects for this game.
Two rips, a walk, a K, two long outs, and 35 pitches in one inning: the offense should be okay. This game’s all about the battle-cat.
Sweet recovery there by Robinson.
That looked like an over 50 softball league play… after a few beers…
Runs…
I only saw one bad swing in that AB according to gameday, and it wasn’t that far out of the zone, and there were two strikes. And maybe it was a good pitch to hammer even if it wasn’t a strike. Also it seems odd to me to call a 9-pitch AB simply undisciplined.
What happened to battle-mode? That inning was decidedly un-battlelike.
Pettitte must of had something in the microwave.
I live in the baltimore area, so I follow the O’s closer than most orioles fans do. Their pitching stats should improve without any major injuries, and assuming Sherril doesn’t move at the deadline. Their young starters have pitched much better(Bergeson has been amazing in regards to any expectations) and Guthrie seems like he’s sorted out whatever funk he was in.
But yeah, their bullpen is awful. If Danys Baez is anything more than a mop up guy, that says a lot.
Hinskie is a monster…
More PT for Hinske…
Ok, that was good.
Yeah Hinske. I love that the Yanks have a power bat on the bench. It’s been such a long time.
That Hinske deal might not be terrible.
[36] Looks like the 2011-2012 season, so two more seasons in NJ, although I read they haven’t even started construction on the Brooklyn Arena yet and have a back-up plan in place of a move to Newark. (Keep in mind I am not an expert, in fact my hoops team is unfortunately the Milwaukee Bucks)
And Hinske!
[41] It appeared to me that Cano swung at two pitches that were out of the strikezone.
[41] Also it seems odd to me to call a 9-pitch AB simply undisciplined.
I didn’t say that Robbie’s 9-pitch AB was undisciplined… i agreed with Rich that Robbie typically swings wildly at balls that are out of the strike zone… hence, undisciplined…
...so, is it me, or has Hinske pretty well mashed since becoming a Yankee?
Susan letting me know about the bad news Mets newest injury to Nieve (sp???)
Man those guys are pathetic.
Good one Jonathan… so, you’re suggesting that Cano should have a beer before coming up to the plate?
Of course, Catfish used to come in after three innings and pop a cold one…
Ahhhh, the good ol’ days…
I wish Jeter had tried to steal there.
Oh God, we have to listen Weiss tonight? Crap.
Hernandez line…
Two innings… 58 pitches…
Jeter tied Ted Simmons on the all-time BB list with that last walk (185th all time). With his next, he’ll tie HOFers Heilmann and Mize. He’s far enough in his career that nearly every positive AB moves him up some list or another. He’s about to pass Ted Williams on the hits list.
[57] On the plus side, Weiss might eat Michael Kay.

-Charlie Weiss
I would rather see two goods team play each other.
If you had to pick a game, you couldn’t pick a better one than the Cincinnati Reds versus the Philadelphia Phillies
How long does it take for Baltimore to start contending?

Maybe a joint operation between the military and the Notre Dame science department has yielded a time machine.
[63]: 3-5 yr plan following death of Peter Angelos
[62] That almost caused a spit-take. +1, sir.
[63] When are they allowed to transfer out of the AL East?
Nice to see that Andy can still put away Cesar Izturis on 10 pitches.
The problem with the Orioles is that they lost half their season ticket base when the Nats arrived with the new stadium. That’s the main reason that there are always seats available for the Yankee and Red Sox fans… Also, that’s a lot of (lost) revenue… they probably have to split the cable $$ with them too… Don’t know if you guys have been down to Camden but it is a sweet park and i’ve been to Detroit, Pittsburgh, Atlanta and, of course, Fenway…
Battle battle battle.
Hinske is a monster…
If we were playing the “Battlin’ Andy Pettitte Drinking Game” I’m pretty sure I’d be sloshed right now. Kay has already described two ABs in that inning alone as “battles.”
I’m the only one who has been taking a shot every time Kay mentions “battle”?
[68]: Camden is one of my favorites. Helped by the fact that I posed for two photographs with Boog Powell within about 3 weeks this year and he remembered me. It’s in my top 5 with Los Angeles, old Yankee Stadium, Wrigley and PNC (and, yeah, Fenway is really nice, too).
Obviously, the quick 2nd inning scared Pettitte. Had to go back to the battlin’.
Man, You lads are snarkmiesters tonite! Fear or confidence?
Battle on.
Kay is such an idiot. Off the bat, that Teixeira ball was obviously not hit hard enough to be decribed as “deeeeep to right field.” Is his determining factor for ball depth the sound the crowd makes? I bet Sterling didn’t even screw that one up.
69 -
I am pretty sure that MLB did everything possible ($$$) not to make Angelos too upset when they put in the Nats.
[68] The O’s didn’t lose their season ticket base because of the Nats. They lots it because of constant suckiness the past decade. They still draw their own fans ok from time to time. I was at the game Weiters hit his first HR and it was a good 80% full, which is saying something.
Camden is beautiful, and there are affordable tickets, they hold a lot of specials. If the O’s could contend post-all star break the fans would come back. Plus, it’s hard to lose fans to a team that wins even less than they do.
And they actually have practically the same cable $$ that they had pre-nats, MASN broadcasts both teams and didn’t exist before the Nats came to town. I don’t know the numbers, but I’m guessing if they won enough to be worth watching the $$ wouldn’t be too bad. Really, Angelos is a jackass who refuses to spend any money. All my o’s fan friends don’t hate on Steinbrenner “buying” championships, they hate on Angelos for not doing the same.
[76] Yeah, the best part was while he was saying “deeeeeep” Jones was running IN on the ball.
[78] Didn’t the O’s try to spend money in the late 90’s, then had that disastrous Albert Belle signing?
Reborn range.
I have 4 Joey Belle rookie cards.
Value? A buck three eighty. In confederate dollars.
So how many runs in the last 4 games have come on HRs? 80%?
Nice play by the Hinsk.
A contact lens delay for those following on Gameday.
Good deke by Cano there, could save a run if Battle Cat can induce a GIDP here.
Is Ace ready for 3? 83- You are very close Puj.
Big K there.
Way to battle…
[87] Ace should only need to cover the 6th and 7th, Hughes only threw one inning yesterday, so he should be good to go for the 8th. Unless Mo isn’t available, then I guess Ace for 3 innings, close it out with Hughes?
Also, Battle mode, all the time.
Mo is definitely not available. He pitched three days in a row already. I mean, he was so tired that he walked a guy yesterday.
The wheels are going to come of for Hernandez this inning.
[53] Ok, but you were referencing a comment making that argument. My cavil works fine as a response to that one.
[78] Jim, i work with a guy who is from Baltimore and his dad has had season tix forever… Just going by what he says… he says that, regardless of winning, some would rather watch the NL…
He may be a little off with ‘half’ but it is a substantial amount and, like i said, the cable $$ (an area that allowed the Red Sox to catch up to the Yankees) is also substantial revenue. (How can they not split with Nats? the markets are almost identical). If they still had that money, they would’ve been able to sign Teixera… now, they can’t/haven’t signed anyone of substance over the past few years… or, for about as long as the Nats have been in DC… Yes Angelos is a stingy SOB but it’s simple economics…
That is Jeter’s first infield flyball all year. According to Fangraphs he hasn’t hit any before tonight.

Hernandez’s pitching style reminds me of John Maine. Just keeps pumping those high fastballs in there.
Looks like ARod will have to take things into his own hands again and hit ANOTHER tie-breaking, late game HR.
[78] I should have added that the ‘general suckiness’ also contributed to the shrinking fan base…

Back in 2007, the Yankees seemed to have a ton of games in the second half where the offense would slumber through the first six innings, before exploding against the opposing team’s bullpen late. Hopefully we are heading in that direction tonight. Hernandez is probably close to done for the night.
I think there will be at least 6 runs scored in this game.
