Offense Pie Charts Through Games of June 27, 2009

BR: Batting runs using linear weights (not position-adjusted)
Outs: Duh.
Comments
Cano is a prodigious out-maker. As is Jeter.
Is it giving two outs for each DP to the individual?
Derek still has a .377 OBP though, which is pretty darn good.
Seeing that Jeter is the leadoff hitter, it’s a great testament to his abilities that he doesn’t lead the team in outs. It’s also shocking to see just how much offense Cano wastes, even when he’s having what most would consider a “good” year.
except that jeter can’t hit into a dp his first at bat.
get we get two more pie charts where the above are adjusted for % of plate appearances they’ve accounted for?

Well, if ANYONE could…

Boston sends NY into a losing streak.
NY sends the teams Boston is going to play into losing streaks.
Which strategy is sounder?
Which strategy is sounder?
Option C - showing up to play against Boston.
is that allowed?
Is anyone else excited for the USA/Brazil game today?
speaking strictly for me-NO unless its Beach Volleyball you’re talking about
NO unless its Beach Volleyball you’re talking about
That would be as exciting, but no.

I don’t have tv so can’t watch, but I plan to keep up with what’s going on via ESPN. Is it fair to say that this is, if not the, one of the biggest matches for the US team?
Football is just too slow for my jaded, decadent American taste unlike say watching Chuck Knoblauch bat or that reliever on Cleveland last year pitch
RE: [4]I made a spreadsheet in excel, but I could not paste it in a readable format. I know this is not as good as a pie chart but I have summarized the spreadsheet below. The following is the ranking of players based on BR/PA.
1. Tex
2. Damon
3. Posada
4. Rodriguez
5. Swisher
6. Jeter
7. Gardner
8. Matsui
9. Cano
10.Cabrera
All of the other guys don’t really matter. Tex had a big lead over Damon and then Damon-Jeter were pretty tightly packed followed by the stragglers. Hope this is useful.
How is Teixeira the 5th best free agent signing (and CC the 7th), even to a mediot like Heyman?
I don’t have tv so can’t watch
neither do I. Given that the US looked so bad earlier this year I’d say that following up 2 good games with a third, even if they don’t win is pretty important. Plus, they still have to qualify for the World Cup.
Is it giving two outs for each DP to the individual?
Yep.
get we get two more pie charts where the above are adjusted for % of plate appearances they’ve accounted for?
Not sure how to work that as a pie chart, but here’s how the players rank in terms of batting runs per outs made.
Player BR/out
Teixeira: 0.286
Damon: 0.257
Swisher: 0.240
Posada: 0.239
Rodriguez: 0.239
Jeter: 0.230
Gardner: 0.221
Matsui: 0.208
Cabrera: 0.200
Cano: 0.199
Nady: 0.151
Molina: 0.150
Pena: 0.133
Cervelli: 0.104
Ransom: 0.091
Cash: 0.082
Berroa: 0.002
I think BR/out is my new favorite stat.
I´m not all that excited for the soccer game, and I love soccer, as required by Brazillian laws. It is like trying to get you guys to follow the WBC or the olympics baseball with passion. You might get interested in the event, but not brake your tv with anger interested.
US up 1-0
2-0.
speaking strictly for me-NO unless its Beach Volleyball you’re talking about
Agreed. Volleyball (especially women’s beach) is very underrated.
However, I will be all for the US team winning. Just don’t ask me to watch people run around a ginormous field for two hours playing defense.
Unless, this happens.

That’s actually more or less what the US is doing, as far as I can tell from the gamecast. They’re playing really defensively, despite the 2 goals.
They’re carrying it live here in Israel- this is a shocking result for the USA.
now back to the Yanks
For those of you without cable (like me) the USA-Brazil game is on Univision, i.e. channel 41 on free tv.
Nuts, I don’t have an antenna anymore.
I’ve tried, but I just *can not* get into soccer.
2-1, Brazil scores early in the 2nd half.
US getting dominated in the second half. Just got a gift from the refs on a ball that was a goal.
I saw that. Looked in. If this was in Brazil, there might have been a riot.
Whoever is doing the gamecast for ESPN is kind of funny. THey really doesn’t like the Brazilian players.
Brail equalizes, 2-2.
So, maybe it could get a little exciting.
Back to the TV
Brazil scores again, 3-2. Too bad, I predicted this score though.
US fail.
Doesn’t seem like there will be much added time.
that was a very lopsided 2nd half (and throw in the last 30 seconds of the first half)
US got worked in the 2nd half, they were better for the last part, but the first 15+ minutes really killed them.
Getting outshot 25-8 is not good.
Brazil has the best team in the world. There’s no shame losing to them 3-2 (well, really 4-2 but still).
For sure, the US showed that they can hang with the big boys, put a scare into Brazil and beat Spain, who was the #1 team going into the tourney.
Not a bad game for the US. But it is hard to play that good defense over 90 minutes. And the goal at the beginning of the second half gave us a lot of momentum.
It always Berroa playing against the US. In here we treat this games like a series against the Nationals, meaning you can only fullfil spectations, never beat them (people still think the US plays like it did 15 years ago.).
Rooting for Brazil in soccer is like most people see rooting for the Yankees. If you don´t win the WC, you failed. You should see the backlash here when we lost the final in 1998, after winning it all in 1994. Kind of like the feeling of failure in 2001.
There is also another thing, when playing with the US. This is our sport. You have track and field, swimming, basketball, etc… Leave this sport for the rest of the 6 billion people in the world.
Jeter SS
Swisher RF
Teixeira 1B
Rodriguez 3B
Cano 2B
Posada C
Cabrera LF
Gardner CF
Wang RHP
If Wang can’t win today, facing Livan and the largely AAA Mets lineup, he never will.
