Go Yanks!
I’ll be back later to liveblog the rest of the game unless someone else picks it up.
After four and a half innings, the Yankees lead the Royals 6-0. Sabathia has pitched very well so far with 5 Ks and allowing three hits. Swisher is putting on a clinic at the plate. He is a double and single shy of the cycle, if you really care about such things.
Teixeira was a late scratch with some sort of wrist discomfort. Please, please let this not be anything serious.
Bottom of the fifth:
Aviles singles up the middle off of Sabathia.
CC starts Jacobs off with two balls, as he did for Aviles. So Jorge goes out to talk. And as with Aviles the count goes 3-1. On a 3-2 count, Jacobs lines out softly to Damon in left.
Olivo grounds to Ransom’s left, he throws to second too high and pulls Cano off - the throw to first is not in time. E5. Cody, you really have only one job while A-Rod is on the DL: don’t suck major goat genitalia on defense.
Bloomers flies to fairly deep center and Gardner makes the catch. Aviles tags and goes to third with two down.
Crisp grounds into the 6-4 FC to end the inning.
Top of the sixth:
Alex Gordon has come out of the game for a reason not yet known. Nady strikes out swinging on a fastball down the middle.
Ransom strikes out swinging on 4 pitches. He’s not very good.
Gardner walks. Probably not the smartest thing to do if you are Robinson Tejeda.
And a passed ball on Olivo allows Brett to move to second. Its now ruled a wild pitch. With a full count, Jeter walks. A very good AB for the Captain. He was behind in the count and fouled off a few while laying off some tough pitches to work his way back.
Damon pops out to shallow center.
Bottom of the sixth:
Callaspo hits a low liner to short that Jeter snags for the first out.
A pitch up and in hits DeJesus on his right hand. He takes first.
Butler skies one to center. Gardner moves to his right and makes the catch.
Teahen now up in place of Gordon. He hits a liner to center that Gardner tries to catch on a dive but can only grab it on a bounce. Runners on the corners now.
Aviles reaches out on an outside pitch and taps it to the mound. Sabathia throws an inaccurate ball to Swisher who reaches into foul territory to make the catch while still on first base.
Top of the seventh:
How often does a guy make a play to save an error and then lead off the next inning? Swisher walks. He’s 2-2 with two walks tonight.
Matsui strikes out looking.
Posada strikes out looking. Tejeda has some very good movement on that fastball. The booth is saying it was a changeup, which at 87 it probably was for Tejeda.
Cano strikes out swinging on what looked like a slider down and in.
Bottom of the seventh:
Jacobs singles into the gap in left center.
Olivo strikes out swinging.
Edwar warming in the Yankees pen now.
Bloomquist taps one to the right of the mound and Sabathia fields and throws to Swisher for the out. Jacobs moves to second.
Another tapper in front of the mound and Sabathia’s throw forces Swisher into foul territory. But he hangs on to make the play and the inning is over.
Top of the eighth:
Waechter in to pitch for the Royals. He goes 3-0 on Nady. On the 3-1, Nady hits a hard grounder up the middle for a single.
Ransom grounds into the 4-6 FC. Nady’s hard slide made a throw to first impossible.
Gardner lines out to center. The Ransom-Gardner combo is getting a bit tough to take.
Veras is now warming in the bullpen. Jeter strikes out swinging.
Have to stop liveblogging now. But since all three of the people that read it are either drunk or on their way to getting drunk, I don’t see it being a problem.
Go Yanks!
**Jonathan out**
Comments
IPK 11Ks in 6IP last night-I was kind of surprised that Hughes didn’t start opening day-wonder if he is pitching tonight.
So he made them look stupid?
I’m loving this free extra innings preview
Let’s hope the Yanks aren’t downplaying Tex’s injury as is their wont.
Great to have him back!
Wow. How awesome is it to not have an offensive blackhole behind the plate?
And how great is it that Teixeira can be scratched from a lineup and not be replaced by another blackhole?
IIRC, Nady has better defensive numbers at 1B than Swish.
Wow, CC’s first pitch was right at the knees over the heart of the plate…for a ball.
Gameday agrees with you, DaPuj.
And they have him at 95-96 on the fastball.
Wow. A K! Way to go, CC. That $161 million looks better already

Perfect game. I’m calling it.
Why would you call it?
Sabathia’s ERA fell two points that inning.
Hopefully he can make it to the single digits in the next.
Uh Bret AJ 3 run homer in 1st inning tonight
Wow, CC’s first pitch was right at the knees over the heart of the plate…for a ball.
Yeah, it was a bad frame by Posada. But definitely a strike not called.

Got to love that 2-1 change-up to Butler.
I like this CC guy.
We have single digits!

There goes history.
You just had to call a perfect game.

The no hitter remains in play.
The 0-2 pitch to Gordon was very close to a strike. I totally thought he was about to ring him up. And of course he hits him.
Go go Jete.
They are totally about to manufacture a run.
Swisher might be the single greatest acquisition in the history of all things. I’m of course talking about my acquisition of Swisher off the waiver wire in my fantasy baseball league.

Nobody’s really making a huge deal about it, but you have to be encouraged by Jorge’s start with the bat.
Posada looks real good! Matsui looks like he has a giant fork in his back.
Matsui is super streaky. He’s unstoppable for a while and unbearable for a longer while. In the long run he’ll probably produce to his projection.
Hmm, triple with a man on third. Don’t you think that’s a bit of overkill, Swisher? You guys were trying to manufacture that run remember.

The complete game shutout is still in play.
The complete game shutout is still in play.
Stop now before we start hoping for a rain out.
I’m loving the 39 pitches after 3 innings. Oh yeah, and the 4 K’s.
Matt, you are really asking for it, aren’t you?
I’m loving the 39 pitches after 3 innings. Oh yeah, and the 4 K’s.
Hey, so you’re the voice in my brain!
Cody Ransom is dreadful.
Gardner GIDP? Lame.

Tough times for the Brett Gardner movement.
Maybe ROY is reaching a bit high.
The bottom of the order is dreadful.
I know, I know: so does everyone’s.
Gardner GIDP? Lame.
Who doesn’t wanna be like Jeets?
Yeah Frog and when Molino starts it will be that much worse. Arod get well soon. I hope Melky gets some playing time.
Is.
Whatever.
Haven’t posted for a while. Rusty. How does this work?

C.C. might look great, but I am still transfixed by that advertisement YES snuck in there. Buy…consume…must…
What’s the deal with Billy Butler—too early to declare the experiment a failure? Or just another example of the Royals’ prospect hype machine?
CC increases the Yankee coolness factor by multiples of 1000.

And for the rest of us not enjoying the YES broadcast?
And for the rest of us not enjoying the YES broadcast?
Well, “enjoying” might be the wrong word, but he did an on-air ad for WB Mason.

47. Ha, ha. I think it was for coffee or something. It was like the 50’s. Kay seamlessly segued into it after analyzing a strikeout.
Swisher is Sofa King great.
I used to like those WB Mason ads where the secretary whipped off her glasses and burst into a fantasia of song due to WB Mason products, or something. They were on all the time in like 2006.
the Swish!!!

48. W.B. Mason. There you go. Swisher is awesome.
Out in a Swish!
I think Nick Swisher likes playing every day.
I know what I just posted was awful, but as bad as Jolly O’ Saint Nick reads, actually hearing it on the radio. Ouch.
that at-bat from Matsui looked way better than his first

I wonder if the Royals hierarchy is coming to the horrifying realization that Horacio Ramirez is not a very good pitcher. Impossible to believe, I know. Think of how they feel.
Is it possible that Swisher’s 2008 was simply a product of Ozzie Guillenitis?
Is it possible that Swisher’s 2008 was simply a product of Ozzie Guillenitis?
I always felt that the transition from Sciosa to Guillen while forcing Swisher to play CF, a more demanding position, was a rough decision and the White Sox basically gave up on him after his bad start couldn’t have helped.
...the transition from Sciosa to Guillen…
Except he was with the A’s, not the Angels.
Your point still stands, though. Guillen is a crazy mofo.

Rancid strikes again.
Can all this still be Alex’s fault? I mean, even Alex couldn’t predict that!
If both Ransom and Pena can’t hit, why not put Pena in there? At least he can play defense…
Cody Ransom is just horrifically bad on both sides of the ball. If not for this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7XZX946hWI
I would want to kill him.
Like having two leadoff hitters!

Really good AB by Jeter right there. This observation shall be beamed out into cyberspace.
Except he was with the A’s, not the Angels.
Yeah, somehow Sciosa was managing the A’s and Angels in my head, not really sure why.
I just loved after the Swisher trade went down how there were numerous reports of GMs saying they would have jumped on Swisher at that prce.
Does having a hard-on for Nick Swisher make me gay?
Yes.
You know what’s great about CC sucking that first game? All the rats were flushed immediately. I know we already knew, but everyone that so very much enjoyed trotting out the $400 million dollar bust free-agency just gets to eat crow and crow and crow.
Cool.
Does having a hard-on for Nick Swisher make me gay?
Probably not as gay as me having a hard-on for you having a hard-on for Swisher.

Kay, with these questions… all the time… did those flashbulbs bother you when you hit… did your strategy change after you hit a batter…

This is no way to talk with a lady in the room.

As I’ve been saying forever, the guy thinks he’s hosting Centerstage with every game.
Nick Swisher: In the rare case an erection lasts for more than four hours, seek immediate medical attention.

My God Sabathia’s change is nasty tonight.
Hi fielding could use some work, though. Throws to first base, especially.

Can’t wait for some Sunday afternoon baseball tomorrow. Cranking up I-Tunes and watching Joba throw gas. Praise the Lord baseball has returned.
The complete game shut-out is still in play
Pitch 108 was at 95 MPH and yielded that out.
I know that part of the value of CC is his ability to pitch 8+ innings when needed. I’m just a little nervous about leaving him in unnecessarily.

Can’t blame Kay, but it’s hard to mention Dick Howser’s managerial tenure with the Yankees without referring to his totally unjust firing.
Shouldn´t Posado leave in the next inning? I mean, save his arm as much as possible early, and you still get a better defensive replacement anyway.
I agree with [86], with possible deference to, if any, working with the bullpen in real game situations.
Really, a defensive replacement for DJ a second time? I know its a blowout, but still…
“If both Ransom and Pena can’t hit, why not put Pena in there? At least he can play defense… “
Did you know Mark Grudzielanek is still a free agent? I honestly don’t know anything about the quality of his defense and he hasn’t played 3B really but as a 2B/SS I’d think he could handle the position. And the guy can hit. The last 3 seasons his OPS has been .740, .772, .744.
He is an obvious signing for this team imo. Fill in for A-Rod until he is back and a massive upgrade at utility infielder after that. How much could he cost if he hasn’t been signed yet? A million max? Cashman should be all over it.

Tony Pena Jr. is an RBI machine.
It is strange, but I thought the last play was going to be a “past a diving Jeter.” Maybe he is positioning better afterall.
Abraham on Tex:
“Diagnosis is tendinitis. Plan is to start him tomorrow.”
91 also maybe he morphed himself into Ramiro Pena.
