NY Post - Sherman: MELKY TO MINORS, SEXSON WAIVED

In a move designed to boost the Yankees New York Yankees ’ sagging offense, the team today will demote Melky Cabrera Melky Cabrera to the minors, waive Richie Sexson, and promote Brett Gardner and Cody Ransom from Triple-A, The Post has learned.

I approve, although I’m not seeing an offensive upgrade when the replacements are Gardner and Ransom.

You have an MLE on Ransom?  I suppose he shouldn’t be particularly worse than Sexson with the bat, but he can also be used as a pinch-runner, and has experience pretty much everywhere in the field except C and I think CF.

Gardner has returned to hitting well recently.  I saw 3 of his AB’s last night before I had to leave.  Worked the count, two solid singles - one was an IF hit only because the SS made a great play on the ball - and the other the pitcher just reacted and knocked it down.  Don’t know if it *would* have made CF but it had a chance.  Even with that though, I don’t get Gardner being up if Christian is there.

The way this season is going so far I picked a bad year to give up heroin.

Ransom is truly terrible.  He’s barely passable in the middle infield which is what I assume he will be playing most of the time.  He’s also so bad at hitting he was cut by the Giants.  THE GIANTS!
At least now I can hope Melky regain some semblance of a bat

He’s also so bad at hitting he was cut by the Giants.  THE GIANTS!

I think he was too young to play for them.

Damon DH
Jeter SS
Abreu RF
Rodriguez 3B
Giambi 1B
Nady LF
Cano 2B
Gardner CF
Molina C
Pettitte LHP

You have an MLE on Ransom?

Overall 2008 MLE: .236/.298/.440

vs. Lefties: .195/.272/.480
Vs. Righties: .250/.308/.413

I think he was too young to play for them.

Give him a few years and he’ll be in that nice 35-40 bracket the Giants so love.

Quick MLE says Ransom is worthless to the tune of 220/286/397.

Damn you beat me to it SG.

I got mine from http://www.minorleaguesplits.com/mlecalc.html it seems pretty different from yours.

TVH, that looks more accurate to me.  I think my MLE is overdoing SLG, I’ll have to check it.

Feels like this is intended more as a kick in the backside for Melky. If you want to play in the bigs, you’ve got to hit. Unless the Brett Gardner we previously saw was an imposter, I don’t see this move as a boost to a sagging offense.

Why did the Yankee’s trade the AG, not that he was good but he could field and might be a useful utility player unlike Ransom.  Is that Nunez any kind of long shot prospect at least?

Is that Nunez any kind of long shot prospect at least?

Nunez supposedly has very good stuff, but a shitty statistical record.

I am assuming they decided AG’s bat was always going to suck and finding a good fielder is probably pretty easy, so why not gamble on a project with some upside if something clicks.

Even with that though, I don’t get Gardner being up if Christian is there.

My guess, they want to see if he can learn to hit hittable pitches earlier in the count and since they’re out of it, and he seems to need time at a level to learn, they’re using this as an extended trial to see if he’ll ever be useful. If he sucks again for the next month, he’s probably done in the organization.

Well, that and they need somebody to play CF some of the time, since Damon probably can’t handle it full time and I don’t think they think Christian is a CFer.

The Yankees have a similar player to Gonzalez in AA named Ramiro Peña.  If they need a slick fielding light hitting SS for some reason, they have another one available in the system.

As for Gardner, I suppose he can’t be worse with the bat than Melky and can at least cause a bit of havoc if he does manage to reach base.  Regarding Sexon, he was probably waived so that Girardi would stop sitting Giambi against left-handed pitchers.

They’re going to use these guys for small ball, since the team obviously can’t score runs otherwise.

Damon should be in CF with pudge catching.  If you want offense, don’t put molina and gardner in your lineup in the same night.

How about batting Jeter leadoff so he could NEVER bunt with a man on or hit into a DP in the 1st inning.

As for Gardner, I suppose he can’t be worse with the bat than Melky

I think Gardner has proven that if anyone can be worse with the bat than Melky, Gardner could.

Damon should be in CF with pudge catching.

ok, then who DH’s?  Betemit?

at this point, isn’t it worth it just to see if Gardner can play or not?

what are you sacrificing, 4 AB’s from Betemit?

the problem is that the Yankees don’t have 9 good hitters to play everyday.

every day there will be 1-2 holes.

as long as Damon, Giambi, A-Rod, Abreu, Jeter, Nady and Cano are in the lineup, i can’t get too worked up over the last 2 spots.

Gardner definitely needs to hit the weight room big time in the off season if not to adopt another muscle building methodology.

Gardner definitely needs to hit the weight room big time in the off season if not to adopt another muscle building methodology.

Gardner’s lack of power is not from lack of muscles.  His swing is royally fucked up. He’s all arms, no hips, legs and core.

I have to agree with sentiments here, good move to waive Sexson and Melky needs to find something that resembles a bat in AAA.  But I am also in that group that wonders how these two callups could possibly help the offense.  Christian was doing a great job pinch-running for us.

Maybe they worked with Gardner on his bunting or something? Nobody here is reporting that.  If he could bunt reliably, he could actually get on base enough to contribute.

Maybe but nonetheless he looks pretty scrawny for a major league outfielder and that can’t help.

Maybe they worked with Gardner on his bunting or something?

Gardner was supposed to be an excellent bunter. He got a ton of hits in the minors off of bunts, at a good clip. He just bunted poorly while he was up. I suspect he’ll look better bunting this time around.

Gardner picked up his hitting “prowess” somewhat lately. Maybe they think he can actually contibute on the offense, not just PR-ing.  Damon is probably more banged up than we know and so cannot be counted on to play the OF every day. I would also guess that they’ll give Brett a few games to get acclimated and see how it goes, and after that one of Gardner/Christian will go back to Scranton.

As an aside, a brief foray into WasWatching has reminded me why I don’t read him anymore.

Oh, and I would like to congratulate Gil Meche on his impending no-hitter tonight.  Does it still count if you do it against the 2008 Yankees?

No hitter that’s silly.  It’ll be one run three hits through 8 with Soria pitching a 123 9th and the Yankees lose 5-1

Meche could easily throw a no-hitter so long as he walks or plunks the leadoff batter every inning.

Better no hit strategy would be to walk the first two and then balk

But then Jeter would have to hit second in every inning too…

Girardi: Gardi to be every day CFer.

i didn’t hate how sexson looked in his at-bats…but he wasn’t outproducing Giambi. I think that waiving him was exactly what Cash had to do with Torre/Proctor.

Pete Abraham just confirmed that Gerrit Cole will attend UCLA.  On the bright side, the Yanks signed Garrison Lassiter.

Way back in the 20th century, Bill James wrote the first essential book about baseball managers. Chris Jaffe has just written the second.

John Brattain Memorial Fund

The Hardball Times has set up a memorial fund for John Brattain's family. He left behind a wife and two teenage daughters.

Four years ago, I found from personal experience how generous the online community can be to its own in their hour of need. I am now literally begging you to be even more generous than you were to me.
