NY Post: WELLS WOULD LOVE YANKEE RETURN
May 9, 2008—For his 45th birthday in 11 days, David Wells wants something pinstriped.
The free-agent left-hander told The Post yesterday he has been working out near his home in San Diego and believes he could bolster a Yankees New York Yankees rotation suddenly besieged by question marks.
In case you needed a chuckle.

I am not quite laughing. 2007 ERA was 5.4ish in the NL- not good but he did have a better second half. Whatever his asking price would be is probably way too high.
I have an odd fondness for his lack of tact.
Sad to relate, but the nut that didn’t fall far from the tree, Hankenstein, seems to feel the tug of David Wells.
Say it ain’t so Joe
As pitcher get older we expect they generally need to get craftier to consistently get hitters out.
Unfortunately David Wells couldn’t screw in a lightbulb by himself

Bet you he could if he needed to; e.g. to see the beer in the fridge.
The only thing that he can add is his considerable weight. Literally.

Wells certainly has said and done any number of incredibly moronic things in his life, but when it comes to pitching, WTF are you talking about? He was never overpowering. His entire career was built on pinpoint control and out-thinking hitters. He had considerable success in his early 40’s with a mid-80’s fastball that he only threw about 60% of the time. That’s sort of the definition of crafty, isn’t it?
All that aside, he’s way past done as a pitcher. He should get over it and get himself an XM radio show.
David Wells was still throwing High 80s as late as his failed 2006 comeback with the Red Sox. When he was good to great in the 90s he threw mid 90s with his fastball and relied on his great curve as the out pitch. Sorry, doesn’t make me think crafty.
I don’t remember “mid 90s” - maybe low 90s? I certainly didn’t have him in the “crafty lefty” category back in the day.
So, Matsui in left tonight with Giambi at DH and Damon on the bench. Anyone wishing Damon’s defense was out there with Kei on the mound against all those righties for Detroit? Hopefully Giambi can make me feel foolish for doubting his “abilities”.
DO NOT WANT
Giambi’s OPS is 0.739, Melky’s 0.801, Jeter’s 0.699.
David Wells isn’t just a fat fucking jerk. He’s a done fat fucking jerk.
Wells is almost certainly done.
That said, eh, I wouldn’t mind giving him one shot at proving us all wrong.
It’s still early in the season. Is he going to pitch THAT much worse than Kennedy? If so, then cut him.
