NY Daily News: Yanks’ hopes rest on rookie arms and pitching by committee
There have been glimmers of hope that the rotation will roll, like when Pettitte, Roger Clemens and Chien-Ming Wang combined for a 1.80 ERA in last month’s sweep of the Red Sox. But three of the next four starts, including one apiece by Pettitte and Clemens, were duds.
“It’s amazing how quickly it can look ugly, right?” Pettitte said.
But that downturn was followed by good outings from Wang and Phil Hughes. Tonight, Ian Kennedy, who had a fabulous debut last weekend against Tampa Bay, starts against the Royals.
Kennedy and Hughes give the Yankees two rookies in their rotation, spots that used to be held by more experienced, playoff-hardened pitchers.
I’d rather see rookies like Hughes and Kennedy out there than Jaret Wright starting an elimination game in the playoffs, but I’m weird like that.
Seriously, Pettitte and Wang should be a decent 1-2 punch, then you just throw in the pitchers who are throwing the best at the end of the season in the 3-4 slots, be it Clemens, Kennedy, Hughes, or (snicker) Moose. If the Yankees make the playoffs that is, which I’m still not sure about.

What are the odds on A. Phil having a date for the prom?

So pessimistic, SG
So Detroit plays Seattle this weekend? So as long as we take care of business against KC, we should be able to open things up a little.
Weekly J, it doesn’t really matter to me as long as I’m going. It’s not as if I would get lucky or anything, since my friends who are girls don’t do that type of stuff. I’m actually not a nerd either. Just a baseball geek. I play for my high school’s basketball team and I start, so there.
Pete Abe examined the upcoming schedules of both Detroit and Seattle, as well as the Yanks, and things look encouraging from here forward, schedule-wise. Seattle’s falling apart—and they’re really not that good in the first place—and Detroit has a lot of question marks.

Wordy McWord-a-lot.

See where A Phil’s mind naturally leads too.
What position do you play and are you scholarship good?
So as long as we take care of business against KC
A letdown is always possible.
Wait. You wouldn’t rather have a declining veteran like Kevin Brown helping the Yankees get in the playoffs from his self-imposed spot on the DL?
If Torre had pulled an obviously spent Pettitte after six innings and put in Joba in the TB game on Sunday, the start wouldn’t have been a dud, and the Yankees may well have had another win.

If you’re a highschool senior, you seriously should look into trying to hang out with new girls. They’re out there.

No need to rush it. He can just wait until Freshman year of college when every girl instantaneously and magically transforms into a two dollar hooker.
A.Phil,
I was just busting chops. I didn’t even go to the prom. Anyway, you’re talking to someone who was captain of the fencing team (1998 district champs!), vice president of the marching band, an editor on the school paper, chess team (alternate), and the drama club.
Holy shit, what a fucking nerd I was.
I’m so psyched for Rutgers vs. Navy tonight. Rutgers blows up crazy option foolishness.
WJ, Do you any decent college football messageboard websites?
I read somewhere today that some thinks Navy is gonna give Rutgers problems. I look forward to some ass kicking.
Ian Kennedy, between the D-Rays and Royals, may not even realize he’s in a different league just yet.
Enough with the Joba should have been in the Sunday Sept 2nd game in the 7th inning.
You wanted him in down 2-1? If he pitches then who would pitch the 8th and 9th innings assuming you only wanted him in for one inning. If you wanted him for two innings who would pitch the 9th to still keep the game close unless the Yanks scored some runs?
Using Chamberlain on Sunday would have eliminated his availability for Monday and/or Monday and Tuesday’s games against Seattle. On Sunday those Seattle games looked more important to have Chamberlain available than the one Tampa game.
The surprise is that it took this long for Littlefield to be fired. Then again, he probably got a lot of rope because his predecessor, Cam Bonifay, was even worse….
