NorthJersey.com - Caldera: Yankees keep Sox from clinching AL East

BOSTON—For Joe Girardi, there was little satisfaction in denying the Red Sox an opportunity to clinch the AL East.

“I’d have liked to have knocked them out of the playoffs and put us in. That would’ve meant something,’’ Girardi said, after the Yankees completed a soggy 19-8 win Friday night over the Sox at Fenway Park - a game that saw two rain delays that totaled two hours and nine minutes.

The Rays lost their game, but clinched the division by virtue of the Yankees’ late-night triumph - thus completing one of the most unlikely titles in recent memory. Tampa Bay wasn’t supposed to compete in the Sox-Yanks world, at least not this year.

Actually, Tampa Bay had a non-trivial chance to compete this year.

This is what happens when teams pitch to Cody Ransom. Ransom for 1B in 2009!

How about the percentages for the AL Central? 3% combined for the Twins and White Sox? Wow.

How much Longoria did that projection for TB use? Still a pretty amazing job by the Rays.

Quite a performance by Mr. Santana today. How will they blow this one?

The Mets did not blow it. Three hit complete game on three days rest. Very impressive.

Let’s trade for Santana.

Let’s trade for Santana.

Et tu, Frog?

All’s I’m sayin’ is: the Mets need a bullpen, right? Do you think, maybe, Veras, Geise and Britton would do it?

Ron Darling just said that Santana just threw the best clutch game he’d ever seen at Shea—and cited similar games by Doc Gooden and Mike Hampton as comparisons.

Lets also raise a glass to the great Paul Newman. A man who defined goodness and charity.
A much better person than these Naders,Obamas and McCains will ever be.

I’m with you. I can’t think of anyone else I’ve had such unambiguous respect for.

Plus when I was a kid I really wanted to be Butch Cassidy, Newman-style.

Who’m I kidding? I still do.

Plus when I was a kid I really wanted to be Butch Cassidy, Newman-style.

I’ve always been more partial to Cool Hand Luke. Perhaps that says something about me.

I’m a huge fan of The Sting and The Hustler. Just great movies.

“A much better person than these [...] Obamas [...] will ever be.”

Let’s not get into this stuff, please.

I prefer not to talk about politics, mostly because it just ends in the vast majority of people calling me a nutter or getting really angry.

Hud is my favorite. Patricia Neal was a pretty cool dame.
I actually had the honor of meeting him at a HS graduation party 6 or 7 years ago. The effect he had on the lasses was something to see.
My wife turned into a complete schoolgirl when introduced.

Another thing about Newman, while he wasn’t as busy in the later stages of his career, he was really terrific in whatever roles he chose to be in. Nobody’s Fool is pretty awesome, because of him.

I see that TB is about 6 games ahead of their Pythagorean - anybody have a sense if that’s luck or good management or a good bullpen or what?

I should really stop reading Rhoden’s columns in the Times. Today he’s saying that the Mets, with all their injuries, are really scrappy overachievers, not big-payroll disappointments.

Not to rain on your parade but: sample size.

I’m not sure but I have an inkling of a suspicion that SG might have been joking.

Ransom for 1B? Why not SS? Sign Tex for 1B and make Jeter the new stadium mascot.

make Jeter the new stadium mascot

You mean he wasn’t already?

Damn, game’s postponed. I was really looking forward to seeing Ponson. Oh, well, I guess they’ll just throw him tomorrow.

Javy Vasquez is pitching to keep the ChiSox’ season alive. I think I’ve seen this movie before…

Joakim Soria with his best Farnsworth impression so far in Minny.

Damn you, Mauer! Who do you think you are, Jeter?

Man, I hate when Lupica agrees with anything I say or think.

Watching the Brewers choke and the Mets succeed makes me a sad panda.

Watching the Brewers choke and the Mets succeed makes me a sad panda.

Look at it this way: the sooner Brewers fall out of contention, the less opportunity they’ll have to utterly blow out CC’s arm. Cuz if they make it, I have a feeling Sabathia will pitching every other day and throwing 150 pitches.

It’s not a really big deal, but to see the Indians and the Cubs both pull their good pitchers from the last game when that last game directly affects the postseason chances of other teams is kinda annoying.

In Lee’s position, at least it is injury-related.

Zambrano’s is, “Yeah, I just don’t feel like it.”

I think it’s perfectly reasonable for the cubs to pull zambrano so he can start game 1. I mean, I would be pissed off as a fan if he played in a game that didn’t mean anything for my team and then could only start one game during the first round.

Way back in the 20th century, Bill James wrote the first essential book about baseball managers. Chris Jaffe has just written the second.
- Rob Neyer, ESPN.com

From now on, whenever I have a question about a manager, Jaffe's book will be the first and last one I reach for.

John Brattain Memorial Fund

The Hardball Times has set up a memorial fund for John Brattain's family. He left behind a wife and two teenage daughters.

Four years ago, I found from personal experience how generous the online community can be to its own in their hour of need. I am now literally begging you to be even more generous than you were to me.
