NJ.com: Yankees Make Moves

BOSTON—Live from the clubhouse, where David Robertson has arrived and fellow reliever Mark Melancon is expected to join him. Makes me think doctors found something bad enough in Brian Bruney’s elbow to warrant putting him on the disabled list.

Angel Berroa is here too, starting at third base, for the injured Cody Ransom. More details to come.

No word yet on who has been DFAed.  If Bruney’s injury is serious, that will suck big time.

And just because I’ll post anything not regarding last night’s game:

This blows. Bruney going down is brutal. Berroa, I suppose, can’t hit any worse than Ransom, but he doesn’t have much experience at 3rd.

But Jesus, have people seen Melancon’s numbers this year? 10 IP, 2 wins, no runs, 17 Ks, 4 hits. That’s encouraging. Let’s hope he gets some of Marte’s innings.

So who is going to get Wang’s starts if he is really gone for a month?

Let’s hope he gets some of Marte’s innings.

I thought Marte looked pretty good last night. He gave up a solo HR to a guy who was 3rd in the MVP voting last year and has a 1.3xx OPS this year. Pitchers give up runs.. all the relievers can’t have 0.00 ERA’s.

So who is going to get Wang’s starts if he is really gone for a month?

It seems like it should be Hughes. The interesting part will be see what they decide to do with him when Wang comes back if he has pitched well. All of a sudden you have to start looking to see who’s pitching better between Chamberlain and Hughes if Hughes is the one who does get called up.

Wow, Bruney on the DL.  Ransom on the 60-day DL…whatever.

From PA: Meanwhile A.J. is readying for his start by watching the movie 300. He has a Spartan warrior tat on his left arm.

Pedroia: “Yankees.. lay down your weapons.”

Burnett: “Red Sox… come and get them.”

Ransom 60 day DL has to be for clearing the 40 man spot for the Berroa move. They can’t just DFA him when he has hit the DL.

There has to be another 40-man move if Melancon finds a spot at the 40-man. Is it Eric Hacker? Does anyone know why Wilkin de la Rosa or Eric Hacker is on the 40-man list?

Looks like it’s Humberto Sanchez.

Hacker and de la Rosa were added to protect them in the Rule V draft.

Well, this kind of sucks.  I’m excited to see Melancon though.  Here’s his 2009 MLE.

1.90 FIP and 12.19 K/9, sounds good.

I wonder if Sanchez will make it through waivers. Why wouldn’t a team like the Nationals or Royals take a chance even if he’s injured? Teams like that should acquire any high ceiling talent that they can.

I’ve only heard about Melancon, never seen him pitch.  Scouting report says 92-95 mph live fastball with a good 12-to-6 curve.

Pedroia: “Yankees.. lay down your weapons.”

Burnett: “Red Sox… come and get them.”

Youkilis: “Our home run balls will blot out the sun.”

Cano: “Then we will play in the shade.”

Melancon throws a change and curve, right?  His GB/FB ratio seems good.

Wow, PA has Sanchez being released, not DFA’d. Steve Lombardi won’t be able to type fast enough.

I think so. I’ve actually heard him compared to Burnett - good fastball, power curve.

I thought Marte looked pretty good last night. He gave up a solo HR to a guy who was 3rd in the MVP voting last year and has a 1.3xx OPS this year.

Whatever. The guy gave up 11 runs in 18 innings for the Yanks last year and has given up 3 home runs in 4 innings pitched this year. His WHIP so far is 2.36. He has been horrible. Lefties have a 1316 OPS against him and righties are hitting him even harder. He should be pitching mop up until he shows he is better than this.

Hah, they just straight up released Sanchez according to PA.

The guy gave up 11 runs in 18 innings for the Yanks last year and has given up 3 home runs in 4 innings pitched this year.

Why should these 20 innings be weighted more heavily than the other 450 inning he’s pitched in his career? Short answer: they shouldn’t.

Also, I distinctly remember Girardi using Marte for a 40-50 pitch outing last year, and later hearing Marte say that he got hurt as a result. So the justifiably lower weight we should be giving to Marte’s 18 innings last year should be decreased even further.

He’s a good pitcher based on his long track record and he looked good last night.

“Why should these 20 innings be weighted more heavily”

Because of what you yourself pointed out—if he is still hurt, or the injury caused some change to his mechanics, or if the injury is chronic, then his recent performance may well be a true indication of his talent level.  I don’t know if that’s the case, of course.  I haven’t seen him pitch and maybe he’s just pitching in bad luck.

And Yikes—Berroa has played one game in the majors at third.  I have to think Pena will start and Berroa is only there in case.

Well, not according to the lineup PeteAbe posted…

Jeter SS
Damon LF
Teixeira 1B
Swisher RF
Cano 2B
Posada C
Matsui DH
Berroa 3B
Gardner CF

Outside of the nightmare game against Cleveland where he gave up 6 ER, he’s been fine.  His BABIP is way higher than would be expected from his LD%.

Also, take a look at his gamelog from 2008.  He threw 42 pitches in a game on on 8/4 and wasn’t sharp afterwards. He basically got 10 days off between 8/12 and 8/22 (he pitched to 1 batter on 8/16) and finished the year by pitching 10+ innings with 2 ER and 13 K’s.

I’m not sure why people are piling up on Marte. He’s a good relief pitcher. Yes, his numbers look ugly. Just relax.

20—Huh.

21—thanks for the info.

So, should we use this as the game chatter to vent during this impending disaster while listening to BuckCarver?

Sorry, I think this one i going to end up being a disaster. But whatever.

I’m banking on the following: Beckett’s career 5.33 era vs. the Yankees.  Burnett’s 2.56 era vs. the Sox and 0.40 era at Fenway.

There’s a new thread up sam

Way back in the 20th century, Bill James wrote the first essential book about baseball managers. Chris Jaffe has just written the second.

From now on, whenever I have a question about a manager, Jaffe's book will be the first and last one I reach for.

John Brattain Memorial Fund

The Hardball Times has set up a memorial fund for John Brattain's family. He left behind a wife and two teenage daughters.

Four years ago, I found from personal experience how generous the online community can be to its own in their hour of need. I am now literally begging you to be even more generous than you were to me.
