Newsday: O’Brien: Yankees’ Cashman to sign three-year deal

Brian Cashman has agreed to return as the Yankees general manager on a three-year contract.

The Yankees made the announcement of Cashman’s return Tuesday afternoon, after it was first reported on Newsday.com. Cashman deliberated over the decision about whether it was time to move on after 11 seasons as GM, but gave the Yankees an affirmative answer Tuesday afternoon.

Thanks to yankeemonkey.

Cashman signed because of ym?

Yes. Me and Brian, we’re tight, you know. I told him how much we were all pulling for him to return. He was quite touched.

Actually, although YM sells herself as a 300 lb. male manqué, I suspect she is really a petite blonde sex bomb who lured Cashman to stay in New York against his better judgment.

I also told him there was absolutely no truth to the rumor Steve Lombardi’s taken out a contract on him.

You *would* think that, wouldn’t you.

This guy is a professional baseball writer?

But just as in Washington or on Wall Street, those most accountable for failure never seem to get the blame. Brian Cashman, who took the bullet for the worst decision of the year by a local baseball executive - pulling out of the Santana Sweepstakes - is about to be extended by the Yankees.

Really, the worst decision? That’s a fact, huh? Not Omar giving Castillo a 4 year deal?

ym is definitely a petite brunette sex bomb.

Not to mention a 38-year-old one, as per PagsRags.

“a petite brunette”

I’ve wondered if I find brunettes more attractive than blondes in e.g. movies because of taste or because the former have to be innately more attractive than the latter to overcome, or anyway compensate for, the general preference.

great news about Cashman.

also, I think YM is a hot asian (and therefore almost certainly brunette)lady.

Man, it was a fateful day when yankeemonkey revealed that she was a female. Look at the type of imaginations that it has engendered in this mother’s basement centered blog.

If you like Cashman, this is good news. If you hate Cashman, it’s still good news (More time with Steinbrenner jr.!)

I always pictured YM as a monkey who wears a Yankees cap.

Steve Lomdumbass at Was Watching feels like he got punched in the gut. HA HA HA!

punched in the gut

I would have preferred “kick in the balls”, but that’ll do.

Steve Lomdumbass at Was Watching feels like he got punched in the gut. HA HA HA!

He needs to see a shrink. He takes this shit way too seriously.

Huzzah!

I like Cashman a lot, so I am quite pleased at this move. I just hope it really is, at worst, 80/20 Cashman (I figure it would have to be for Cashman to agree to the deal, it’s not like he NEEDS to be the Yankees GM - I think they need him more than he needs them).

By the by, you folks see former Yankee assistant GM Kim Ng might be getting the Seattle job? That’s awesome - I liked her a lot when she was here. Why did she leave, anyways? Did Cashman not like her?

Kim Ng = yankeemonkey.

Kim Ng = yankeemonkey.

Dang it, my cover is blown.

“I liked her a lot when she was here.”

How were you aware what she was up to? I don’t know if I know who currently holds that position or even what the job description is, much less have an opinion on his or her performance.

Oh, and for those who really want to know, this is what I look like. Carry on.

YM- I KNEW it! To think they laughed at me, LAUGHED!!!

‘s OK, irv. I get that a lot, too. Eventually you get used to it and it doesn’t hurt as much anymore.

How were you aware what she was up to? I don’t know if I know who currently holds that position or even what the job description is, much less have an opinion on his or her performance.

She had a lot of press coverage at the time.

Well, internet press coverage, at least…but that’s where I get my baseball news! smile

Big deal. The team fails with a mammoth payroll. Reward the GM. Sheesh.

YM —- I’m sure Steve Lombardi, a family man, a working stiff, who goes to the time and expense of doing a blog, thanks you for constantly reading his blog; which you despise but still must read. raspberry

I am so not surprised by something.

Nor am I. Ribbit.

I’m sure Steve Lombardi, a family man, a working stiff, who goes to the time and expense of doing a blog, thanks you for constantly reading his blog; which you despise but still must read.

Um, what? Are you suggesting that the rest of us aren’t family people or working stiffs? And what’s that have to do with anything anyhow?

I’ll also have you know that I have stopped reading his blog long ago and only check it occasionally when news pops up that I know will make his head explode (such as when Phil Hughes makes a start).

And yes, I know I’m rising to the bait.

YM—Yeah, you stopped reading his blog - but still check in to it. I’m off to Bedlam.

Nice of you to constantly bash the guy on another blog though, when nobody else brings him up, we can rely on you for that. Real class act that.

Are you like this in real life?

Are you like this in real life?

On these here interwebs, everyone is a blonde blue eyed hot Asian girl with Lara Croftian proportions.

So no, probably not.

I have no idea what I’m saying (typing?).

When does baseball season start?

That’s not fair, Don. I also bring up Mr. Lombardi occasionally, mostly in a critical capacity, but that’s largely to show my support for the beautiful and petite YM.

this was a juicy fuckin show. thanks peeps

everyone is a blonde blue eyed hot Asian girl with Lara Croftian proportions.

Dang it, now my cover is blown.

what the fuck happened to fjm

YM is actually Larry in drag.

DNFD

Ribbit. cool smirk

Very happy Cash is back. I think anyone looking at *only* this year - or saying “they haven’t been in a WS since 2003” - is very short-sighted. Cashman indicated after his last contract that he had a long-term goal of getting younger and more athletic, and building from within. And also that this would take a few years to play out. I’m pretty sure that as early as *two* years ago he was pointing to this off-season as a time when a lot of money was coming off the books.

The next two years will be big years, as there are a number of FA available, more Yankees come off the books next year (Matsui and Damon), and some of the position players in the minors will either be ready to take on roles (Jackson, possibly Gardner and Cervelli), or have at least shown the ability to succeed at AA (Romine, Montero, perhaps Suttle and Baird). That will give and indication of if Cashman’s plan is working or not. I think he’s earned at least those two years. Hopefully of course the Yankees win two championships in those two years!

Oh, BTW. Completely unrelated to Yankees. But if anyone buys “Iron Man” on Blu Ray, it isn’t broken when it doesn’t play - at least on the PS3 or PC, though I think it is any Blu Ray player. When you first pop the movie in, it downloads a lot of information to your player. It took about 15 minutes on my PS3, though from what I’ve read that is on the long side. The problem is, they don’t tell you they’re doing that. The disk plays, and just sits on an image of Tony Stark’s arc-generator, until it is done (then it starts normally). Quite frustrating as my wife was ready to take the movie back!

I’m pleased he’s back. Not thrilled, but pleased (“Nice. Not thrilling, but nice.” As opposed to “TREASURE BATH!!!”).

I’m particularly pleased it happened quickly, so they can get down to business.

I love you too, Don.

I love you too.

...constantly reading his blog; which you despise but still must read.

Sort of like you with this blog?

Sort of like you with this blog?

Don’s like a car accident. When you’re driving (browsing) past it, you don’t want to slow down and look at (read) the mess, but you just can’t help yourself. Sometimes, you feel really bad afterwards, and just hope that nobody else gets hurt…

Come on guys, let’s all be friends. I’m sure Don is just a lovable softy who would never ever insult us on other blogs. Group hug!

Group hug!

Well, you *are* a cute monkey…

Don, I bash Lombardi on other blogs because he banned me from his. Also, being a “family man” and a “working stiff” is relevant to nothing and doesn’t earn anyone any points in my book.

I despise most of what he writes, but I read it because if you shiled yourself from points of view you disagree with, you’ll never learn anything.

That’s right YM @45. Because how would you know if you long ago stopped reading certain blogs? Caught ya though, didn’t I!?

MC in VA @43—Nowhere did I ever indicate I despise RLYW. Your apology is accepted.

Caught ya though, didn’t I!?

No, you didn’t “catch me,” I’m on record in this very thread as saying that I occasionally look at his blog when I know that there’s news guaranteed to make his head (or his word count) explode. Just look at [27].

Anyway, this is a ridiculous conversation and I’m done with it.

Nowhere did I ever indicate I despise RLYW. Your apology is accepted.

Your comments indicate that you despise an awful lot of what gets posted here, and yet you keep reading. My rejoinder to your #24 was perfectly apt, so I’m afraid you’ll have to find your apologies elsewhere.

Way back in the 20th century, Bill James wrote the first essential book about baseball managers. Chris Jaffe has just written the second.

From now on, whenever I have a question about a manager, Jaffe's book will be the first and last one I reach for.

John Brattain Memorial Fund

The Hardball Times has set up a memorial fund for John Brattain's family. He left behind a wife and two teenage daughters.

Four years ago, I found from personal experience how generous the online community can be to its own in their hour of need. I am now literally begging you to be even more generous than you were to me.
