MLB.com: Yankees’ Hughes sprains ankle

TORONTO—Phil Hughes, one of baseball’s top pitching prospects, has a Grade 3 sprain of the left ankle that is expected to set the hurler back an additional four to six weeks in his efforts to rejoin the Yankees’ Major League roster.

Hughes, a 20-year-old right-hander, rolled his ankle while performing conditioning exercises Friday at Legends Field in Tampa, Fla., where he was rehabilitating a strained left hamstring.

The Grade 3 diagnosis is considered the most severe possible strain, in which one or more ligaments are stretched and completely torn. The Yankees made Hughes’ results public Wednesday, prior to the club’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays at the Rogers Centre.

Wonderful news.  One has to wonder what this season is going to do as far as hindering Hughes’s development.  The Yankees are also watching him accrue major league service time while not helping them.  Luckily, these seem like injuries which should not be a concern going forward, provided they wait until he’s completely healthy before getting him back out there.

This season sucks.

Yeah, completely healthy is the key.  I don’t want him adjusting his mechanics to compensate for no lingering pain or nothing like that.

Off topic: My suggestion is to sit Abreu for the month of June, and play Melky.  If he delivers, awesome.  If he does not, put him back in the minor leagues for the rest of the year.

Abreu should probably accept an assignment to the minors the way the Yankees were trying to ask Giambi to do a couple years back.  When he hits .350 there, bring him back up.  He needs to work out some kinks.  Against a lefty, he steps into the bucket even on outside pitches.

Meanwhile, Melky is a significant upgrade in right field, I believe.

Finally, I predict an awesome June for Matsui.

Comments?

My suggestion is to sit Abreu for the month of June, and play Melky.

I was going to suggest a platoon (play Melky vs lefties), but Melky and Abreau’s splits are actually very similar.  I would definitely however be in favor of sitting Abreau more to let Melky play, and see if that helps.  Maybe even sometimes give Abreau a couple of days off in a row.

I really don’t see Abreau accepting time in the minors.

abraham says giambi is on the way to the dl with a torn plantar fascia in his left foot.  walking boot for 3 weeks and then they’ll evaluate him.

The news keeps getting better and better.

As for Hughes, how did he pull the hamstring when he did and then how do you get such a serious ankle sprain while “conditioning”? That is why you never have enough pitching or pitching prospects. You never know when a guy will all of a sudden become injury prone. Happened before, and no, I’m not referencing Carl Pavono.

The good news is that his hamstring is almost healed now, and will be fully healed by the time he is given clearance to resume working out.

Hughes has the potential be a huge addition by the end of July. Whether or not his contribution will matter will likely be determined in the next few weeks.

Who replaces Giambi: Andy Phillips or Shelly Duncan?

If it’s Phillips, I would DH Phelps every day, and confine Mientkiewicz to the late inning defensive replacement role until or unless Phillips proves he has an even more impotent bat.

It will supposedly be Kevin Thompson according PA.

Thompson makes sense if the plan is to basically DH Damon and Matsui while Giambi’s out.  Given Giambi’s struggles, the defensive upgrade may help make up for the loss of his bat short-term.

Way back in the 20th century, Bill James wrote the first essential book about baseball managers. Chris Jaffe has just written the second.

From now on, whenever I have a question about a manager, Jaffe's book will be the first and last one I reach for.

John Brattain Memorial Fund

The Hardball Times has set up a memorial fund for John Brattain's family. He left behind a wife and two teenage daughters.

Four years ago, I found from personal experience how generous the online community can be to its own in their hour of need. I am now literally begging you to be even more generous than you were to me.
