MLB.com: Yankees finalize 40-man roster
NEW YORK—Moving to protect their Minor Leaguers from the upcoming Rule 5 Draft, the Yankees shifted seven players onto their 40-man roster late Friday afternoon.
The Yankees also outrighted Shelley Duncan to the Minors, removing him from the 40-man roster. Doing so kept the roster at 39, giving the Yankees the opportunity to make one selection in the Rule 5 Draft if they desire.

The Yankees also added right-handed pitchers Hector Noesi, Ivan Nova and Romulo Sanchez, and infielders Reegie Corona, Eduardo Nunez and Kevin Russo to the 40-man roster, thus protecting them.

Good for him. He deserves a shot, and it was never going to come with the Yankees.
So we should stop penciling Shelley into DH next season? Cool with me.
I’m not sure I understand the Ivan Nova love.
[4] What “love”? Anyway, he has good stuff -> fairly high ceiling, showed progress this season, and might well get re(re[re?])claimed.
Yeah, I was about to note just that - protecting some of these players is more about playing the odds of who will get picked than saying “we love this player.”
Taking Duncan off of the 40-man suggests to me that there is someone in the Rule 5 Draft that the Yankees are at least curious about, because otherwise it seems a bit odd to drop Duncan when you have a spot free (as you could always dump him later if a spot was needed).
Yeah, you can’t pick anybody in the Rule 5 draft unless you have a roster spot for them.
I asked this in the other thread and I’ll ask again: am I the only one who finds it a bit odd that the Rule 5 draft is held before the non-tender deadline? Wouldn’t it make more sense the other way around? I’m not even sure if teams can announce their non-tenders early to free up roster spots.
The two names I keep hearing in thrown around as possible guys on the farm who can chip in as starters in scenarios that have Joba and Hughes as the #4 and #5 next year (which I feel needs to be done) are IPK and Nova.
Now stuff is important and all (I’m not a total stats only guy especially in MiLB players) but at some point he has to put together results. And the only place he was every able to get results is Trenton and EVERYBODY puts up great numbers in Trenton. It’s like the anti-PCL. Even in Trenton while he was getting the GB his K/BB ratio was still too low.
Maybe I just talked to a few people who got over excited by his AA numbers and people really aren’t that excited about him yet. However the only reason I bring it up is because I saw he was protected, not because protecting him means everyone thinks he is a future ace.
Here is a bit of a scouting report on Ivan Nova.
[8] You don’t hear about Zack McAllister?
When does the Chapman roller-coaster plummet from the first hill?
For most players, projecting PAs is the same as projecting injuries, which is kind of hard.
Also often reasonable and sometimes dramatic changes in expected usage due to roster change (Swisher’s projected ABs changed dramatically due to Nady’s injury (which, to state the obvious, didn’t have to be projected after it had already occurred), etc.
Do the systems not take this kind of thing into account? Even when a player who’s been a starting player is clearly going to be used as a back-up?
And it’s a half-dollar and a quarter, not a dollar.!
Does this statistic conclusively demonstrate that Jeter is worth only twice Teixeira, not four times?
Fangraphs has Nova’s FIP as being about 4 in AAA in a smallish sample.
Pirates DFA Karstens.
Shelley’s out of options at this point, right? and they already removed him once and sent him to the minors, so they couldn’t do it again without him be able to become a FA, i think. so, there was basically a 0% chance that Shelley keeps his roster spot on Opening Day. might as well cut him loose now, give him the chance to catch on somewhere else, and clear a spot for the Rule V.
keeping him on the roster seemed pretty pointless.
Nova has shown good progression. He has two plus pitches (I wouldn’t rank his curve as a plus pitch).
If nothing else, he could be part of an attractive trade package down the road.
...they already removed him once and sent him to the minors, so they couldn’t do it again without him be able to become a FA, i think…
Yes, all of this is spelled out in the link Rich posted at the top.
They will need to clear roster spots again if they want to sign any FAs after the Rule 5 draft. That includes bringing back Damon, Matsui or Pettitte.
[8] 2 words, 1 name: Alan Horne!
[15] oh, so now i am supposed to prepare myself with “facts” before i spout off my uneducated opinions? when did this place get so highfalutin’?
Well, in this case, doing the “research” would have proven that your “uneducated opinion” was in fact correct. I’m sure you could have worked it out to make yourself look good, or dare I say, even “highfalutin’” in your own right!
Karstens couldn’t hold on in Pittsburgh?
That’s disappointing.
They may just be opening up a roster spot. I think they can outright him if he clears waivers.
*waves goodbye to Shelley*
Happy trails, ya big lug.
At least Duncan nailed Kim Jones.
