So, trade for a guy to take over for A-Rod when he’s not playing third and sit him for an inferior player? I dont get this team sometimes.

Washburn’s a lefty, as is Hinske.

So sit or DH Arod against righties predominantly

I just realized that. I’m an idiot.

Still, are Ransom’s splits against lefty’s that much better?

Severe severe sample size issues, but yeah, Ransom’s hit lefties better than Hinske in their careers. (68 PAs of .295/.358/.508 vs. 735 PAs of .221/.298/.363).

I’m glad to see Cano down at 6th.  I still don’t see why you’d bat him in front of Swisher, but baby steps I guess.

Ransom’s splits are better, just a SSS.

Ransom: 39 G, 61 AB, .295 AVG, .358 OBP, .866 OPS

Hinske: 393 G, 652 AB, .221 AVG, .363 OBP, .661 OPS

Gah, eff’d up the SLG with OPS. Nevermind. Not my day.

But is Hinske better against right handers then Ransom is against lefthanders is the question.

At least Beckett got hit.  But the O’s still suck.

A la the previous thread, Swisher’s BA w/RISP: 0.220.

But at least Swisher won’t swing at a 3-2 ball

At least Cano might get good contact on a ball.

Swisher’s OBP with RISP this season is .368, so at least he’s not making as many outs.

Swisher, career BABIP RISP: 0.243,—: 0.278
For Cano this is 0.275, 0.335.

Odd.  Swisher’s OPS+ is nearly flat for this split (94 vs 99), while Cano’s is very different (76 vs 114).

Maybe Swisher walks a lot with RISP?

I’m mostly surprised by the big deltas in BABIP.  Naively one would conclude that Swisher’s OPS is driven by BB, which would damp the OPS+ delta.

Guess one needs to know how the league performs on BABIP w/w/o RISP - maybe there’s a drawn-in-infield effect.  I would expect RISP to indicate local minima in pitcher performance, giving an effect of the opposite sign.

I had to calculate the w/o RISP BABIP by hand from baseball reference, but last year across MLB it was .299 w/ RISP and .300 w/o RISP.

[19] Thanks.

Andy in non-battle mode.  I like it.

Are we sure Pettitte is actually pitching? That first inning didn’t feature nearly enough battling.

Be patient guys, Pettite doesn’t need to battle the whole time, just most of it.

Sterling, being a grumpy old man, is insistent they stop using the PA system to introduce players and play AB entrance music.

The Yankees MUST lead the league in GIDP.

Yanks are 8th in the AL in GIDP.

See, here comes the battling.

Gameday has ball one to Gutierrez a clear strike.

And the Battle Cat is out of its cage…

Having Ransom on the roster is just plain stupid.

Pettitte ups the degree of difficulty.

Could it possibly be that Pettitte sees the Yankees offense get worse as more runners reach base, so he thinks the key to pitching is have as many people on base as possible?

Interesting theory.

Good job by Andy to get out of the Ransom-created jam.

And to avoid pitching to the dangerous Cedeno with runners on.

Go-go bases empty Cano.

I would prefer if they did not GIDP.

The Yankees lead the universe in GiDP.

The goal - 9 inning ending GIDP tonight. 2 down, 7 to go.

They’ve moved into 7th tonight already.

Two battling battlers on the mound tonight.

To save time, Pettitte should just agree to start the 4th with two on and no outs, so he can go straight into battle mode.

Johnny Battler!

Very cool.

It is funny how Damon hit the ball hard all throughout the at-bat. I’d figure Washburn would try something different.

Battle that.

Damon apparently got Boras’ memo before the season that its a contract year.

Two battling battlers on the mound tonight.

There’s so much battlifying going on I’m frightened. I’ll be in my foxhole for the night.

47. There is so much battling going on that there should be energy bars on top of the screen for each pitcher like in “Street Fighter”.

Battle mode starting quickly in this inning.

[48] how about Mortal Kombat? Then we can have fatalities!

The first Mortal Kombat movie actually wasn’t one of the worst ever put on film. They set out to correct that fluke with the sequel, and by God, they did.

That?

That was frustrating.

Hadouken!!!

Terrible sweater vest in the first row.

That was like the mint after you’ve sucked gasoline out of a tube.

Picked!

Runs…

How’s about a double, Jorge?

Noes?  OK, next time then.

That inning was about a terrible as can be from your 4-5-6.

Were they even trying…???

Remember “Crossbows and Catapaults?”  How the warriors “do battle unto this day?”  They have nothin’ on Pettitte vs. Washburn.

[51] Agreed. The first MK movie is actually decent and still semi-watchable to this day. Unlike the Yankees offense tonight, outside of the A-bomb from Johnny.

That one was a bit scary.

hmm.. I think Sterling just did a teletubbies routine.

Hinske will get an AB in the eighth.  I’m calling a HR for a True Yankee moment right out of the gate.

So, Girardi was quoting saying something to the extent that he sent Bruney out instead of Hughes for the 8th because he was worried the press would have asked him why he didn’t send Bruney out for the 8th.

Making managerial decisions to prevent the press asking questions < making managerial decisions that give you the best chance to win games

“So, Girardi was quoting saying something”

which you believe why?

Melky RH HRs make me happy.

So do LH HRs, but still.

That kid got hit in the face with the HR ball.

Hmm. I think the call stands.

so is delay going to last like 10 mintues?

That was a completely reasonable length of a delay.  Kudos to the officials.

so is delay going to last like 10 mintues?

apparently not.  Waldman is pleased.

Call stands.
I’d like another please.  Will you oblige, Mr. Ransom?

Another HR by Jesus today. That kid is the best hitting prospect we have had since nick Johnson.

I see Ransom over Pena hasn’t been the best idea so far.

Montero is on fire right now. It’s great. Hopefully the catching skills follow quickly.

78. Way too much potential value at catcher to move him, I believe.

“Another HR by Jesus today”

That’s what, four this week?

[66]
If you’re getting this from Pete Abe, that’s not what he said.
Pete Abe intimated all on his lonesome that this was the reason for Girardi’s decision.
Is there another source?  If Girardi REALLY SAID THAT, he should be fired.  Out of a cannon.

How come Andy battles and has baserunners and too many pitches - and is able to get to the seventh every time?  It’s truly amazing that Joba can’t do this.

[84] Feinstein (SIC i assume) said that is how Girardi responded to his question on why he didn’t leave Hughes in. He was talking about it during his usual half-inning with the radio voices.

all this damn battling!

Again, I bet that that their “take” on what he said.

But sure, if he actually said that, that’s insane.

My bet is on “If DIDN’T bring Bruney out, you’d also say ‘Why isn’t Bruney in?’” which is lame in and of itself, but not as insane as the alternative.

In any case Girardi was surely joking or anyway not representing his true thinking.

Haha.  Moron got the count wrong and gets thrown out.

Oh man, that’s embarrassing for Gutierrez.

That was interesting.

That’s an amazing Lance Armstrong commercial - actually addressing drug accusations in a COMMERCIAL? Weird.

The scoreboard operator should take note.  Perhaps displaying 3-2 on 2-2 with two outs may prove beneficial.

That’s an amazing Lance Armstrong commercial - actually addressing drug accusations in a COMMERCIAL? Weird.

Avec Miami Vice music!

Oh yeah, he’s back.

Thank you Alex!

This A-Rod fellow can hit a bit.

ARod with proper rest is a MONSTER.

Who was it that said he was stat padding yesterday since they only needed one?  Same today or will they blow this lead too?

Way back in the 20th century, Bill James wrote the first essential book about baseball managers. Chris Jaffe has just written the second.

From now on, whenever I have a question about a manager, Jaffe's book will be the first and last one I reach for.

John Brattain Memorial Fund

The Hardball Times has set up a memorial fund for John Brattain's family. He left behind a wife and two teenage daughters.

Four years ago, I found from personal experience how generous the online community can be to its own in their hour of need. I am now literally begging you to be even more generous than you were to me.
