[198]  I think that means they’ll lose the game.

[194] I was against the Pettitte signing. Hopefully they won’t do the same with Damon.

Wang needs to stay in the rotation, for now. There’s an 18 game winner in there, somewhere.

Deliver you wretch!!!

Whoo-hoo!

Stat padding, only needed one run.

That pitch was positively CRUSHED.

A-Gawd !!!!!

Damn, that was an absolute moon shot.

Guh, he couldn’t even come up with an RBI single.

Like i said… he was way overdue…

Hopefully a sign of things to come…

The Yankees were not trailing, therefore it was not really clutch.

Knife-wrench! Knife-Wrench! Knife-Wrench!

(I’m using this my new cheer for good things)

Slumping-rod OPS .900 because he went off the juice.

[185]
YESSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you, Don.

How deep were those last two balls?

Damn Gutierrez has awesome range in center.

Thurm, no dislike for Phil.

[217] Gameday says the last one was against the fence, Sterling says it was “deep”.

[217] Track.

215- I have 4 cans of low sodium V-8. He can have 2. I won’t even charge him.

WTF take Hughes out after a 9-pitch 7th?

Why take Hughes out after he made them look foolish in the 7th?

WTF take Hughes out after a 9-pitch 7th?

Because Bruney is “the 8th inning guy,” Damnit!

Someone explain to me why Bruney is in the game?

He couldn’t find the plate in his last appearance vs the Mets…

I

bullpen by committee…

Yay for over-managing!!!

223, 4—Because throwing 10 pitches a game and warming up every night is ideal preparation for a starting role!

Why take Hughes out after he made them look foolish in the 7th?

Because Bruney is the “8th inning” guy.  Just how managers think.

Can we have Hughes back?

my last post should have said i ‘hate’ bullpen by committee…

Ah, Clay beat me to it.

How dumb was it to call on Bruney here?

Looks like Mo will get another 4 out save courtesy this Nats retread.

223-226. Its all about assigning roles. Thurm the Katt hawks up a bluejay.

This is f’n ridiculous!!!

0-2 hits by shitty hitters suck.

This is painful.

That’s a kick in the balls.

Great. So the best we can hope for now is that Bruney scrapes 2 outs without giving up another run and we get Mo for another 4 out save. Terrific.

Please now add #27 to the Top 5 Agonizing Yankees of 09.

Girardi goes from strength to strength in his managing.

This is ugly and getting uglier.

I would much rather have Al face Russell the Muscle with the bases loaded than Bruney, especially the way Bruney has been performing as of late.

Gotta go with Rivera for the 5-out save. Bruney cannot be trusted with the bases loaded.

Bruneys finally warmed up.

In Bruney’s defense non of the those hits were particularly crushed.

Whatever

I swear, modern bullpen management amounts to keep changing pitchers until you find one who is ineffective.

I really miss the 70’s and 80’s bullpen approach.

246- Yes another optimist.

Unbelievable…

Thanks Joe…......

Obviously, in this kind of a game, when the team is leaving so many runners on, you want to manage this way.

Sub-optimal.

Seriously, Brian Bruney, fuck off and die.

I agree snapper…

Also in Bruney’s defense, Bruney isn’t the idiot that brought Bruney into the game instead of leaving Hughes in there.

Yay tie game! wait. What?

Bosox now ahead 10-7.

Makes for a better game.
man i’m so full of farns…

Well that could have been a lot worse.

I guess.

By the way, this is another example of how stuff having nothing to do with the player in question highly affects the view of said player.

To wit, if CC and Aceves don’t lose the lead in Boston, A-Rod’s the hero.

Same thing here.

Instead, the heroics are wiped out by the pitching and we get stuff like “A-Rod is way due for a clutch hit.”

And I guarantee if the Yankees don’t score in the bottom of the 8th, Girardi is bringing in Tomko, because Girardi has money on this game. He took the Mariners.

The real injustice is that Hughes doesn’t get the win.

[254] You said it, man.

Snapper, those days are long gone.

You know if Joe G. finally gets a lesson out of this, it might be worth it, but if we lose it will be on him.  He continues to make some very poor decisions. There is no reason not to leave Hughes in for that inning. Sunday night and I believe Bruney’s previous outing forced Mo to come in early.

I demand many more shots of the Matsui family.

Time to PR Gardner, although Girardi will probably PR Sabathia.

Mmmmmmmm. Fiiiiiiiingerrrrrrrrrrrssssss.

On the plus side, the Mariners suck donkeys, so all is not lost.

Dear Melky,

Please don’t load up the bases. Just sacrifice in another run, even if you have to GIDP.

Thanks,
Yankees fans

Ballgame…

Melky!!

Nick Swisher, the new Brett Butler.

I dunno, Swisher could have hit a double there. Best thing to come out of a bunt, I guess.

The MelkMan still delivers!

Count Melkula!

Cabrera has the clutch gene.

That’s how we dos.

Sweet.  And now Bruney gets a win for his troubles.  Makes sense.

They’re loaded in Baltimore with no outs. Crazy game.

Cronin, what the f are you talking about?

Arod’s hit was clutch. The game was tied and his HR put them ahead by two.

If Hughes stays in the game we’re all off the site having a beer by now.

No!  Don’t load the bases with no outs!

Tons o’runs.

[278] “W-L record is a foolproof way to measure the quality of pitchers, and OPS is teh suck.”

-Harold “HR Reynols

Whew.  That was a close one, Jeter.

This is sucking less and less by the minute.

Sweet.  And now Bruney gets a win for his troubles.  Makes sense.

It’s left to the scorer’s discretion. If he has any sense of justice, he’ll assign the win to Hughes.

As hit parades go, this one’s pretty decent.

10-8 now in Balt.  One out, two on.  PITA up.

Time to stop scoring runs, otherwise Tomko will be coming in.

Arod’s hit was clutch. The game was tied and his HR put them ahead by two.

If Hughes stays in the game we’re all off the site having a beer by now.

Which was exactly my point.

He had a “clutch” hit in Boston but it was forgotten because of the loss.

Stuff having nothing to do with the player himself greatly affects how a player is viewed, which is annoying.

Wow, I love HD replay. He was safe.

This would be a nice time for some good old fashioned stat pad-ery.

Bosox 10, O’s 9.

Meanwhile, in Nickel city, the O’s have cut the lead to 10-9… one out and runners on 1st and 2nd…

That said, I am fine with his homer being lost in the story if the Yankees win this. wink

Sorry Brian… i get it now…

It is fun watching the Predicted Winner percentages in the Boston game change.

And the Mississippi Mouthbreather in for the five-out save.

Way back in the 20th century, Bill James wrote the first essential book about baseball managers. Chris Jaffe has just written the second.

From now on, whenever I have a question about a manager, Jaffe's book will be the first and last one I reach for.

John Brattain Memorial Fund

The Hardball Times has set up a memorial fund for John Brattain's family. He left behind a wife and two teenage daughters.

Four years ago, I found from personal experience how generous the online community can be to its own in their hour of need. I am now literally begging you to be even more generous than you were to me.
