Moose looks to rebound after a rough loss not entirely of his own doing.  Go Yanks.

Didn’t check, but don’t care:  from comments here:

...an unnamed yankee source explained that tonight’s offensive explosion may have to do with more than the players just eating their wheaties. with manager joe girardi currently serving a one game suspension, veteran starter mike mussina provided the entire team with free ice cream before and after the game. when asked about how his new skipper may react to this act of insubordination, mussina said bluntly, “We tried it his way. we tried it my way. the numbers say the ice cream stays.” Girardi could not be reached for comment.

Let’s see if the ice cream helps him recover from his last outing.

Should an economics major know about sample sizes?

Should = shouldn’t.

It worked either way.

I’m not sure that quote was entirely legit.

That was a nice 1/2 inning.  Almost got himself back down to the 15 pitches per inning standard.

Alas, I’m consigned to John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman once again.

Carlos Silva vs. the Yanks is like Mike Mussina vs. Manny.

There goes that rally.

these versions of Giambi and Cano are a lot more fun.

It is endlessly pleasing to me that Giambi is making all those people who wanted to cut him a few weeks ago, look absolutely idiotic.

Opposite field, which I LOVE from the Big G!

Like me, for example.

Molina did his best there to try to GIDP.

I was actually thinking about the guy who writes Was Watching, but yeah, anyone. smile

Even Melky is getting in on the action, although the shaky outfield defense of Ibañez helps out.

I trace my prejudice against Giambi to his wretched defense.  I have something against guys who can’t field their position well.  That’s why I generally liked Cano even when he was hitting like Little Bo Peep.

IE thats just insulting. Little Bo Peep is a career .230 hitter.

“The Yankees just hit him, for whatever reason,” says Sterling.  Perhaps they hit him because he sucks.  I can’t believe Silva copped a four year deal.  He has nothing.  The only positive is that he doesn’t walk anyone.

If Giambi played center I’d hate his defense more, but he’s a firstbaseman and he pick throws pretty well. I don’t mind his erratic noodle arm as long as he clogs the bases. His OPS is close to .900. And his OPS+ is above 120.

Also Cano annoys me more, because Giambi is 400 years old, and everyone knew that his contract would look awful in the last year of it. Cano should be trending up, an OPS of +.850 from Giambi is gravy on the cake. If you will.

Ice cream for everyone except Moose?

Is that cake chicken-fried first?  Then YUM.

Ugh.  It’s Moose that’s fried.

I am shuddering at the thought of a deep-fried cake covered in gravy. My arteries are clogging themselves just trying to picture it.

Bad Moose.

well that lead was fun while it lasted.

I guess we’ll see Joba sooner than later.

What’s Moose doing wrong here? Too many ‘fast’balls?

On the plus side, if Joba strikes everyone out on 3 pitches he can go 5 innings.

Schteeve, looked like pitches not meant to be over the plate were over the plate.

thanks. guess guys like Mike don’t have much margin for error.

Of course, then the demands for Joba to stay a long man will erupt.

you can’t misunderestimate the importance of having a lights out mop up guy Clay. It’s almost as important as having a speedy leadoff hitter who doesn’t clog the bases with all kinds of walks.

Nice to see Jorge again.  For those on the radio, TV showed Jorge in the lux boxes signing caps and such for visitors from Wounded Warriors (soldiers getting re-acclimated and such).

Moose couldn’t have done that much worse if Jorge was behind the plate.

If Joba becomes a lights-out mop-up guy, do you really want to lose that advantage over other teams’ mop-up guys?

Another rally killer would be nice here.  By which I mean the three run home run kind.

Love this hitting!  Hello all.

A double? Humph.  Giambi still sucks.  Trade the bum.  Blah blah blah. Yackety Yackety.

Right! When you’re down 11-3 in the 5th, you need a guy who will KEEP IT THERE.

God, I hope someone writes that article if Joba is lights out today.

Frog - Yes.

Seriously, cut Giambi, eat his contract, pay him extra to go away. He’s soooo bad.

I now feel dumb.

I’d feel better with Moeller in this spot.

Any ideas why Molino is hitting before Melky?

“Any ideas why Molino is hitting before Melky?”

For the same reason LaRussa bats the pitcher 8th?  I think it’s worth like one run over a season, but every little edge…

Baseclogger clogged the bases there.

So melky could be all dramatic and get an RBI.

they should suicide squeeze here, NOBODY would see it coming.

Basketball.

“Basketball”

Never heard of it.

MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSE!

That was fun.

Joba’s pretty good.

More offense would also be fun.

Now how can you put a 6th inning guy like that in the rotation?

The Captain caused that HR by his leadership in causing that error.

I like Abreu.  Gets very little love on this site.

I believe the Cap’n needs a few days shore leave.

That was sweet. I can smell the four game winning streak. Smells like freedom fries.

Pete, I agree, I feel like very few Yankees appreciate him, but he’s a solid ballplayer.

Yankees fans, that is.

“Smells like freedom fries.”

Why would a four-game winning streak smell like jingoistic, semiliterate-ly non-ironic use of the rhetoric mocked in “1984?”  It’s puzzling.

Anyone else kinda think Damon catches like a girl?

He throws like one.

I’d like to see Joba elevate the fastball more with two strikes like Mo used to.

There’s a curve.

With his stuff, he shouldn’t be throwing this many pitches.

Per batter / inning, I mean.

Ay yi yi.

If he’s transitioning to a starter role, it’s good that he realizes that he can’t just get by on stuff. I don’t mind him being less efficient at this point.

His curve looks like poo.

holy mackrel was that a ball up the middle that Jeter got to?

Too many pitches. I think he used up his whole allotment already. Can he go one more?

Audition time in the 8th.

He’s at 38. So He might get a batter in the 8th.

I love me some Arthur Rhodes against the Yankees.

Sterling is talkin about Farnsworth bein the guy Girardi likes the best in the 8th.

Sterling is talking as if keeping a 3 run in the 8th without Joba is like climbing Mt. Everest without oxygen.  Even a chump like Farnsworth ought to give up one run at most, perhaps two but not three.  And if he finds trouble, Mariano hasn’t pitched since the deluge.

Cano is back.

Cano must be hitting around .220 by now.

yankee offense is making it rain

Joba will surely see some of the eighth.

How about Giambi and Cano?  Those two ARE the Yankee offense!

i missed the first two cano hits but he’s been hitting everything the other way with authority the last few games

.227 - Cano is hott!

cano is at .227 with a .620 OPS. Giambi is at .230 with an .898 OPS.

Also, Giambi is a triple away from the cycle. wink

Molino is also back!

Okay, that’s going too far.

cano is at .227 with a .620 OPS. Giambi is at .230 with an .898 OPS.

Great, so if Cano gets his average to .230 his OPS will be .898!

Photobucket

[92] No such thing as a triple.

I’m looking for that triple before the game’s out (without extra innings).

94, true, When Billi Beane wrote Moneyball, part of it’s central logic was that three points of batting average always equates to .278 points of OPS, and 95 FRAA Loogy shares.

jim bouton warming up for the Pilots

That pythag record is getting better and better.

Can the Mariners swap homes with the D-Rays, please?

Way back in the 20th century, Bill James wrote the first essential book about baseball managers. Chris Jaffe has just written the second.

From now on, whenever I have a question about a manager, Jaffe's book will be the first and last one I reach for.

John Brattain Memorial Fund

The Hardball Times has set up a memorial fund for John Brattain's family. He left behind a wife and two teenage daughters.

Four years ago, I found from personal experience how generous the online community can be to its own in their hour of need. I am now literally begging you to be even more generous than you were to me.
