Lohud Yankees Blog - Abraham:  Breaking news: Clemens scratched again

The Yankees just announced that Roger Clemens (left hamstring) has been scratched from tonight’s game and will not pitch in this series.

He has been replaced by LHP Kei Igawa.

(Like I was just saying. . .)

Ohgodwa!

6 IP, 5 ERs, 2 HRs.

Yankees 9 - TB 7

I needed to finish that Scotch anyway..

fgasparini nailed it in the previous thread in re. Clemens:

How much says he will make a start in the playoffs “because he’s been there before” and it will be a disaster?

My only other thought is maybe they’re being super-cautious so that he’s fresh for October.  What is the deal with IPK?  He won’t pitch the rest of the regular season, I understand, does that mean he’s a no-go for the playoffs as well?

“I needed to finish that Scotch anyway.. “

And I need to go out and get myself a bottle.

I assume - without any inside info - that this is a case of the Yankees “settling” for the WC and resting a player who could pitch at less than 100% if the game had any real meaning. Roger showed that the last layoff didn’t bother him much, coming back to pitch well against the Red Sox, so I think they are just being overly cautious.

well lets hope seattle and detroit eliminates themselves….cuz unless we bomb tb, then igawa is guarenteed to give up 5er’s…..WTF is IPK doing?  this should be his start for SURE!

The Yankees wouldn’t have paid $25million for the last rites to sign Igawa unless he was really really good.

The guys on SOSH are celebrating that Manny’s returning tonight and Igawa is pitching for NY. The only problem is that Manny’s likely to be very rusty and Igawa’s not nearly as bad as people think.

Begone reverse jinx!  Your power is useless here!

I love how everything us Sawxers say now is scanned for reverse jinxes. If it helps, I think Igawa sucks and the TBer going tonight shouldn’t be misunderestimated. Happy now? Also Manny’s rustiness is immaterial; he needs live ABs now so he can kick ass next week, so this is good news.

My only original thought (sorta) is that both teams suddenly seem like they’re kinda post-pennant race: everyone wants to win this week, but nobody’s sacrificing anything from next week’s agenda to do so. Also, doesn’t having Baltimore on the schedule mean that the Yankees have officially clinched the wildcard?

Yanks are 7-8 so far against the Orioles. Not exactly been a walk in the park. That said, they do suck even more than usual these days…

That was the old Baltimore, before their only decent pitchers were shelved and the rest of the team mentally checked out. They’re playing the worst ball in MLB now, as you guys figured out last week.

Way back in the 20th century, Bill James wrote the first essential book about baseball managers. Chris Jaffe has just written the second.

From now on, whenever I have a question about a manager, Jaffe's book will be the first and last one I reach for.

John Brattain Memorial Fund

The Hardball Times has set up a memorial fund for John Brattain's family. He left behind a wife and two teenage daughters.

Four years ago, I found from personal experience how generous the online community can be to its own in their hour of need. I am now literally begging you to be even more generous than you were to me.
