if we only played in the NL west or on barnstorming tours….
amen.
Here you go Royals, let me roll over and lay in the fetal position. It’s much easier to kick me that way.
Keep the faith
I’m surprised that Baseball Prospectus still shows over a 2% chance of a comback, but even if that’s right, it’s still time to give up. I’m not sure that there is much that Cashman can do differently as a result of giving up, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Abreu or Giambi has already made it through waivers, so there may be some options.
i really thought those trades were going to be David Justice part deux and the team was finally going to rocket into first. But instead, were like that Iranian rocket that misfired…and when they tried to cover it up, even the lowly royals were able to expose the truth.

I really can’t believe this attitude. Here’s a race from just *last year*, that was a lot more “over” than this race is. I know several Philadelphia fans; they gave up, didn’t watch games any more, etc. They also didn’t start watching again until the last few games of the season, and missed two weeks of a great comeback. Are there differences between Phillies/Mets and Yankees/Sox/Rays? Sure there are. But not enough so that the comeback can’t happen.
Hey, if giving up and doing something else makes you feel better, then that’s fine. If the Yankees fail to make the playoffs - even if they fail to make .500 - I’m sure you’ll tell everyone how happy you are you didn’t expect them to do well. Those of us who don’t give up may feel more disappointed the day they’re eliminated, but we’ll have more fun until then. And, if the Yankees DO come back, we’ll get the whole, sweet ride.
Are there differences between Phillies/Mets and Yankees/Sox/Rays?
Yes, the Rays and Red Sox are much, much better teams than the Mets were last year. And the Phillies were healthy last year when they made their stretch run, unlike the Yanks.
But not enough so that the comeback can’t happen.
You realize that comeback was, statistically, the most improbable come back in the history of baseball right?
Hey, if giving up and doing something else makes you feel better, then that’s fine.
I have no intention of not watching the games. I also have no expectation of them making the playoffs. You can watch baseball and be a fan without being completely unrealistic. There are a lot of reasons to watch this team without expecting them to catch two better teams from 7 games back with a month and a half left.
My feelings exactly CP
I don’t know if I’d even call that a comeback by the Phils. Stepping over a dead body, maybe. The ‘08 Yanks have to step over two very-much-alive bodies in their division alone. No, it’s not impossible they’ll make the postseason, but so many things have to go right for them, and wrong for everyone else, that it’s really unlikely.
And they’ll get schooled in the DS even if they do make it. The fork has spoken.
Forget about Mets/Phillies. This team still is technically alive if only because they have 6 games against the Red Sox and 6 games against the Rays (for those who still think they have a shot at the division, like me.)
The problem is, none of this shit matters if they keep playing like a bunch of fucking deadbeats. You start to wonder if some of the veterans on the team are getting tired of the late season run inspirational speech. They’ve gotten it this year, last year and in 2005.

A lot of RS/Rays being better is hindsight; if the Mets has won 8 of their last 10 they would have been a great team (they where +25 on Philly in run-differential at that point). If Boston loses 8 of 10 somewhere in here - which can actually even happen to a very, very good team - the Yanks are right in it.
You realize that comeback was, statistically, the most improbable come back in the history of baseball right?
Yep. That’s kind of the point. You can’t *ever* give up. Now I admit if the Yankees are 7 back in the loss column with 16 left I won’t be quite so optimistic. However, 7 back with 40 left to play is a lot different. Instead of having to make up 1 game every 2 played, they need to make up 1 game every 5 played. That should be a lot easier, no?

First, this was a bit of scatter-shot, as some here have already professed they aren’t going to watch much. Second, I am *not* accusing those who are not watching of not being fans. I want to thank you for accusing me of being unrealistic though. I suppose when I thought going into January the Giants had a chance at winning the Superbowl that was unrealistic as well.
And finally, I’m not *expecting* them to make the playoffs. However, I’m certainly not giving up hope, and watching just for the individual stories. Look at it this way too; if the Yankees can make up 4 games in the next 36 - one every 9 games - they go in to the last three games with an opportunity to sweep Boston to tie. That’s unrealistic? Likely no, realistic? I’d have to say yes.
That’s a really cool picture.
Game over, man! Game Over!
What the FUCK happened to Cano’s range?
This team is so fucking bad it really boggles the imagination. What a bunch oftic pathtic losers.
Am I alone today?
Good for y’all for not subjecting yourself to this nonsense.
since it seems germane to the discussion in the thread
i’m afraid i’ve gone over to the dark side
if this team isn’t going to make the playoffs ... and i’d say that probability is less than 5%, then i want losing and lots of it
i figure we’ve got to finish below .500 to be guaranteed a bottom 15 finish ... which is where we’ll need to be to secure a protected 1st round pick
we play today, we get one step closer to a high draft pick today
c’mon everybody ... say it with me!
well, if melky was Hacky McHeadfirstslide ...
then i suppose gardner really ought to be Slappy McGirlyswing
You guys are gonna miss greinke’s no hitter
Jeter. jesus
Ponson for 5th starter next year?
heh. i was just wondering ... if Snacks keeps this up, he might just be a Type B free agent ... wouldn’t *that* be something!
Greetings y’all… this is gonna be freakin fun…
Everyone should have this audio clip loaded for today’s game:

How will they fuck this up?
you have to admit, this teams ability to find new and heretofore never seen ways of stranding runners is one of the few remaining points of interest in this season ...
no reason damon shouldn’t have scored on the single
Ugh.
are you fucking serious
Wow. That wasn’t a new way to strand runners, but it’s always nice when they return to a classic.
bases loaded nobody out for the heart of the order…....
Of course there was every reason for Damon not to score. So we watch WOE in all its gory….... errrr….... glory!
Magnificent.
Snacks is pissed at the offense. ‘Course you can’t plunk your own hitters, so watch out KC!
lol
I’m beginning to like this WOE.
Really.
Really I am.
I mean it now!
i’m telling you ... my mantra for the rest of the year is:
we play today … we get one step closer to a protected draft pick today!
Jeter vacates too soon.
Tehy are gonna get swept at home by KC
Jeter sucks at lfie.
I talked about that draft pick stuff over a month ago. It was semi-funny then, as there was a long way to go. It doesn’t seem so funny any more.
I think I’m in favor of firing Girardi. Not much is his particularly his fault, but he is a bad manager.
Anybody else want Girardi gone if they (likely) don’t make the playoffs?
I was aginst his hiring, so I am coming from a biased position to begin with.
Plus, just to erase the bad taste of this season. We can always write them off as the aberrant “Girardi Yankees” in the same breath as Stump Merrill’s boys.
WJ anticipates my post, wow.
Normally I don’t agree with anything Don says, but that is some freaky symmetry.
Who you calling a freak?
I just feel there’s a whole lot more to the quick firing of Girardi by the Marlins. Girardi defenders say it was the fault of the owner and GM. I think there was much more to it.
Ponson has been so incredibly decent.
There is a game chatter thread now. FWIW
Gardner got a xbh!
And WOE strangled him.
