The Hardball Times: Fabian McNally: Dr. Strange Phil, or, How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Believe Phil Hughes Is Ready

Fabian makes a guest appearance at The Hardball Times today, breaking down Philip Hughes before his major league debut tonight.

I’m all a-twitter.

Read the article earlier today…nice work!

I agree with Fabian, there’s no reason Hughes can’t have the success that some other top level pitching prospects have enjoyed (Weaver, Liriano, King Felix) when they came up. I’m looking foward to it and I expect him to do well.

The jump in innings that he made from 2005 to 2006 fell under my radar. Here’s to Phil being everything we hope he’ll be.

Good article Fabian, agree with your main points. The only actual live games I’ve seen of Hughes were in spring training which obviously doesn’t mean too much, but the highlights of him I’ve seen, especially his curveball, are really sweet.

If he gives us 6 solid innings, against that lineup, I’ll be satisfied.

I feel like I am about to go on a first date with a hot chick… Not quite nervous, not quite scared, not quite anything just a mix of feelings.
I am praying for atleast 6 innings tonight!

I think we may have another rainout…

btw, am I crazy or are the Yankees pulling a Theo Epstein with Hughes? That is, saying one thing about his development a while back, then doing the exact opposite now.

There wonty be a rain out…

I’ve been thinking about some nicknames for Hughes. The one I’ve come up with is King Philip. Anyway, I’m hoping for a solid 6 inning performance, 2 runs MAX. GO Yanks!!

Just my luck.

I just checked the MLB XI sked.  They won’t be showing the game tonight.  Now I’m rooting for rainout.  If I can’t watch…

EB in LA, that’s mean.

A. PHIL, Phil hates being called “Philip”.

EB—MLB.tv has a 5-day preview, you can sign up for five days and cancel at no cost.  Might wanna try that.

Way back in the 20th century, Bill James wrote the first essential book about baseball managers. Chris Jaffe has just written the second.

From now on, whenever I have a question about a manager, Jaffe's book will be the first and last one I reach for.

John Brattain Memorial Fund

The Hardball Times has set up a memorial fund for John Brattain's family. He left behind a wife and two teenage daughters.

Four years ago, I found from personal experience how generous the online community can be to its own in their hour of need. I am now literally begging you to be even more generous than you were to me.
